How Fiber Optics Work

An optical fiber (or optical fibre) is a flexible, transparent fiber made of extruded glass (silica) or plastic, slightly thicker than a human hair. It can function as a waveguide, or “light pipe”, to transmit light between the two ends of the fiber. The field of applied science and engineering concerned with the design and application of optical fibers is known as fiber optics. Optical fibers are widely used in fiber-optic communications, where they permit transmission over longer distances and at higher bandwidths (data rates) than wire cables. Fibers are used instead of metal wires because signals travel along them with less loss and are also immune to electromagnetic interference. Fibers are also used for illumination, and are wrapped in bundles so that they may be used to carry images, thus allowing viewing in confined spaces. Specially designed fibers are used for a variety of other applications, including sensors and fiber lasers. Optical fibers typically include a transparent core surrounded by a transparent cladding material with a lower index of refraction. Light is kept in the core by total internal reflection. This causes the fiber to act as a waveguide. Fibers that support many propagation paths or transverse modes are called multi-mode fibers (MMF), while those that only support a single mode are called single-mode fibers (SMF). Multi-mode fibers generally have a wider core diameter, and are used for short-distance communication links and for applications where high power must be transmitted. Single-mode fibers are used for most communication links longer than 1,000 meters (3,300 ft). Joining lengths of optical fiber is more complex than joining electrical wire or cable. The ends of the fibers must be carefully cleaved, and then carefully spliced together with the cores perfectly aligned. A mechanical splice holds the ends of the fibers together mechanically, while fusion splicing uses heat to fuse the ends of the fibers together. Special optical fiber connectors for temporary or semi-permanent connections are also available.

The fiber optics is the communication technology, it was initiated in 1976 in UK and USA. All the telephone copper wire has been replaced by the optical fiber. The journey of Optics Cycling for Sight has gone from strength to strength every year. Optics Cycling for Sight was founded in 2011 by Bradford University student optometrists Jessica MacIssac, Fares Hatoum and Abubakr Patel to raise money for Optometry Giving Sight. In 2011 the cyclists travelled from Glasgow Caledonian University to Cardiff University, stopping at each mainland UK optometry department on the way. This first cycle raised £2875! In 2012 the route extended to almost 1000 miles by starting at the new optometry department in Plymouth university and finishing at Glasgow Caledonian University. Cyclists Fares Hatoum and Maadhav Kothari again visited each optometry department and were joined by 18 other cyclists for different legs. They raised £3300. 2013 the entire optical profession was invited to take part in the challenge and help collectively cycle 25,000 miles, the equivalent of the circumference of the world and organise their own events up and down the UK . The goal was to try and raise £1.00 for each mile cycled. They raised £12,500! 2014 the UK profession cycled over 8,000 miles and Eyecare by Perceptive also organised a CET credited Optics Tour of Yorkshire – the Yorkshire route mirrored the opening stages of the Tour de France with the ride divided into 3 stages: with 200km, 100km and 50km routes were available. Over £12,000 was raised across all collective events, and generously matched by Essilor UK Limited generating over £24,000! 2015 See details under Event 2015 and learn how you can be part of this. Now several years on, it’s captured the hearts and imagine of the entire eye care profession and those that care about vision. Thousands of miles have been cycled, along with thousands of pounds being raised to help fund sustainable eye care projects. The USMC issued Unertl MST-100 scope, the US Optics ST-10 and SN-3, and the new Vortex Razor HD scopes are compared in this review. Rex examines their long range suitability for the LONG RANGE 101 series. 1. Unertl MST-100 is a great scope for the .308 Win and was designed for the USMC M40 sniper rifle. Rex reviews the interesting features on this optic and categorizes its long range suitability. 2. US Optics ST-10 is the most rugged scope you can get and has some of the best glass in the world. If you want an extremely tough battle optic that will put up with whatever you throw at it... this may be it. Price is way too low even at $1600 considering it beats most scopes that cost $1000 more. The SN-3 is the toughest variable scope you can get and has top notch glass as well. If you really want a variable power scope and want ruggedness at the same time, look at this scope. 3. Vortex Razor HD has some great feature design and looks like it should be a great choice, however, conflicting reports as to construction quality loom in the air. Rex cannot endorse or reject the Vortex Razor HD at this time...
