The Syrian people (Arabic: الشعب السوري / ALA-LC: al-sha‘ab al-Sūrī) are the inhabitants and citizens of Syria and are, overall an indigenous Eastern Mediterranean people. While modern-day Syrians are commonly described as Arabs by virtue of their modern-day language and bonds to Arab culture and history, they are, in fact, largely a blend of the various Aramaic speaking groups indigenous to the region who were Arabized when Muslim Arabs from the Arabian Peninsula arrived and settled following the Arab expansion. Syrians are tied together by geography, linguistic heritage, religion, and similar Eastern Mediterranean ethnicities. Most Syrians reside primarily in Syria; however 17 million Syrians live outside of Syria and they stay connected to their cultural roots by watching Syrian satellite television, listening to Syrian music and preparing Syrian cuisine.
Damascus, the capital of Syria, is one of the most continuously inhabited cities in the world (for 8000 years straight, Syrians inhabited Damascus), and a large percentage of Damascenes are the descendents of the early inhabitants of Damascus.
The Syrian uprising is an ongoing, violent internal conflict in Syria. It is part of the wider Arab Spring, a wave of upheaval throughout the Arab world. Public demonstrations across Syria began on 26 January 2011 and developed into a nationwide uprising. Protesters demanded the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad, the overthrow of his government, and an end to nearly five decades of Ba’ath Party rule.
Since spring 2011, the Syrian government has deployed the Syrian Army to quell the uprising. Several cities have been besieged, but nevertheless the unrest continues. According to witnesses, soldiers who refused to open fire on civilians were summarily executed by the Syrian Army. The Syrian government denied reports of defections, and blamed "armed gangs" for causing trouble. Since early autumn 2011, civilians and army defectors began forming fighting units, which began an insurgency campaign against the Syrian Army. The insurgents unified under the banner of the Free Syrian Army and fought in an increasingly organized fashion; however, the civilian component of the armed opposition lacks an organized leadership.

BEYOND CASABLANCA . . . Fate, in a Low-cut Gown, Lies in Wait for Bogart!
Beyond Casablanca... In Damascus... Destiny, in a low-cut gown, beckons from the Devil's Doorway!
Gen. LaSalle: My soldiers didn't survive Verdun to have their throats cut in this stinking hole!
Col. Feroud: [discussing Smith] As far as I know he's reliable, but don't trust him.
Nasir Aboud: [hearing gunfire] It's a French gun.::Harry Smith: What do you care whose gun it is as long as it isn't aimed at you?
Achmet: What an oddity you are, Mr. Smith, - an American in Damascus. No morals! No political convictions!::Harry Smith: I've had a few.::Achmet: I find that difficult to believe.::Harry Smith: I had a bellyful of them. I left them in the states with my first wife!::Achmet: Isn't there anything you believe in?::Harry Smith: You mean right now? Sure! [looking through the envelope of money he has just been paid off with] I believe in this, and it's two thousand short!
Feisal: [skulking into the barber shop] You wish to buy some jewels?::Harry Smith: You got some good ones?::Feisal: Beautiful jewels fit for a dream of a girl, one who is different!::Nasir Aboud: Ah, they're all the same!::Feisal: Oh, no, each new girl is different. With each new love a mist comes before the eyes, the pleasure you will have before the mist rises and you find out that she's like all the others!
Nasir Aboud: Hey, what's the matter with you?::Balukjiaan: Nothing is the matter. Why?::Nasir Aboud: You look sick. [to his assistant] Doesn't he look sick?::Nasir's assistant: Yeah!::Balukjiaan: I'm never sick!::Nasir Aboud: That's what my poor father said just before he died.
Balukjiaan: [entering the warehouse] Nasir, my little lamb, my sweet friend!::Nasir Aboud: [with sarcasm] We smelled you coming.::Balukjiaan: Uh?::Nasir's assistant: He said you smell like a goat!
The barber: Get your big stomach out of my way!::Balukjiaan: My poor stomach! Every little thing upsets it. Do you have any soda?::Harry Smith: What's the matter with your stomach?::Balukjiaan: It talks to me like my conscience.::Harry Smith: What does it say?::Balukjiaan: It says,"Levon, my lamb, why do you stay in this terrible town? Why don't you go away - far away?"
Harry Smith: [to Violette] I don't know whether I'm too good for you, or you're too good for me.
Emir Hassan: [to Feroud] We do not fight to win. You will win, but it will be a victory you will regret.
Cloud masses meet and clash
Along shifting lines of grey
No sunlight, no blue skies below
Just endless, eternal rain
I always stare at the endless sky
Waiting for the end of another day
I always stare at the falling rain
Waiting for the sun to shine again
Nothing can be seen
Of the planet's surface
No oceans, no deserts or seas
No mountains, no signs of life
I always stare at the endless sky
Waiting for the end of another day
I always stare at the falling rain
Waiting for the sun to shine again
Once I dreamed of you and me
Landscapes so dead and dry
Once I dreamed of you and me
Drifting by the silent sky, side by side
Can't stop thinking of you
Visions breaking through
Can't stop feeling blue
Nothing really new
Once I dreamed of you and me
We walked the desert sands
Once I dreamed of you and me
Talking about the days gone by
And our greatest love
Fear is gripping me so tight
My starship is drifting
Aimless in flight
It's time to activate my mind
Mechanical pilot now comes alive
Storms of electricity
As digital implants are powering me
But now, running through the void
I can't stand the warp
Even if I'm a droid
Deep in my synthetic soul
I am falling down out of control
Light years of silence and stars
Will I return back to the sun
Space is cracking up my brain
Falling to pieces
I can't stop my pain
A war inside my head
Invisible forces are driving me mad
No I haven't seen the sky tonight
Too many clouds there's no starlight
But I know it's true
There must be a blue moon
I got the message you left early today
No signs no warnings to give you away
Not even goodbye it was the only way
There's a blue moon out tonight
No I dont see it but I feel it's light
Come pouring through the clouds
You left above my head
There's a blue moon out tonight
No misconceptions yes i know it's right
Cause i've never been so blue in all of my life
No dont call a friend cause nobody should know
Its just between me my heart and my soul
there must be a blue moon
There's a blue moon out tonight
No I dont see it but I feel it's light
Come pouring through the clouds
You left above my head
There's a blue moon out tonight
No misconceptions yes I know it's right
Cause I've never been so blue in all of my life
There's a blue moon out tonight
No misconceptions yes I know it's right
Cause I've never been so blue in all of my life
But I know it's true there must be a blue moon
Flowers fade out in the snow
But I still see my feelings grow
Flowers fade out in the glow
But I still see your feelings show
It's been a long time
Since you left this world behind
Pictures softly move
Collapsing shades of blue
And in my darkest hour
This place seems to slide away
U ntil the break of day
Was it worth to walk so far?
Was it worth to play this part?
