Ciarán Bourke (18 February 1935 - 10 May 1988) was an Irish musician and one of the original founding members of the Irish folk band The Dubliners.
Ciarán Bourke was born in Dublin on 18 February 1935, but lived most of his life in Tibradden, County Dublin. His father, a doctor, was in practice in the City. The children had an Irish-speaking nanny. Ciarán's early exposure to his native tongue was continued throughout his education, attending Colaiste Mhuire, Parnell Square, Dublin. He later attended University College Dublin for a course in Agricultural Science. He did not take his degree but always retained an interest in farming.
After leaving university, he met his future bandmates in The Dubliners, Ronnie Drew and Barney McKenna who invited Ciarán to join their sessions in O'Donoghue's Pub, where he played tin whistle, mouth organ, guitar and sang. Luke Kelly, who had been singing around the clubs in England, returned to Dublin and the four gained local popularity. Then known as The Dubliners, the group put together the first folk concert of its kind in Dublin. The concert was a success, then a theatrical production called “A Ballad Tour of Ireland” was put on at the Gate Theatre shortly afterwards.
Ciarán was responsible for bringing a Gaelic element to The Dubliners' music with songs such as "Peggy Lettermore" and "Sé Fáth Mo Bhuartha" being performed in the Irish language. He also sang a number of the group's more lighthearted and humorous numbers such as "Jar of Porter", "The Dublin Fusiliers", "The Limerick Rake", "Mrs. McGrath", "Darby O'Leary", "All For Me Grog" and "The Ballad of Ronnie's Mare", as well as patriotic songs such as "Roddy McCorley", "The Enniskillen Dragoons", "Take It Down From The Mast" and "Henry Joy".

It's a remarkable and touching story about one brother donating his kidney to his ailing brother against all odds. Sadly, three years on ( 3rd January 2013 ) Brendan lost his battle to complications of pneumonia. It's a remarkable and touching story about one brother donating his kidney to his ailing brother against all odds. Sadly, three years on ( 3rd January 2013 ) Brendan lost his battle to complications of pneumonia. The Guests on this week's Sticks radio Show are Sean Cannon & Eamonn Campbell
Sean Cannon, Eamonn Campbell are true legends of Irish Folk music. Sean & Eamonn were members of The Dubliners for close to 30 years .In 2012 the Legendary Irish Folk group The Dubliners celebrated 50 glorious years in the music business by receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and rapidly followed it up with a sell-out UK concert tour, the highlight of which was a magical night at The Royal Albert Hall in London.
Sadly, however, they subsequently suffered a body blow with the sudden tragic death of founding member "Banjo" Barney McKenna. Quite naturally this meant that the remaining members chose to sit down and decide upon the band's future. John Sheahan, after 48 years of touring, decided it was time to step off the tour bus and it was agreed that The Dubliners, as a touring band, would come to an end. THE Dublin Legends were born.
The Dublin Legends will continue the legacy started by Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Ciaran Bourke, Barney McKenna & John Sheahan back in 1962. As Barney himself said "It's Too Late To Stop Now".
On the show we will play some of their classic songs such as Whiskey in The Jar, Molly Malone plus 2 new tracks " I'll Tell Me Ma", "All For Me Grog" from the new CD recorded in Vienna plus songs from two groups playing locally this month firstly The UK's hottest musical comedians Jonny & the Baptist "Not a Pub" then Mawkin's "It's All Quiet"

In a very personal, candid and wide ranging Xmas 2014 interview with Michael FitzGerald he discusses these and other controversial subjects that loom large in local consciousness.

Overview. The first major television series exploring contemporary Irish language writing in 2008. The series Rince ar Phár examines the world of Irish language writing and provides an insight in to the works of the major Irish language writers of our time. This series will look at the real life and times of the writers and banish the clichéd stereotypes associated with Irish writing (Peig bhocht!).
Major figures in Irish Literature discuss the nature of literature and the spark of Inspiration. They describe the flash of inspiration, when, according to Liam Ó Muirthile, you 'walk above the ground'. Biddy Jenkinson loves the spark that strikes from the sky.
Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill says, if she could bottle inspiration, she would sell it. The magic of words is what entrances Cathal Ó Searcaigh. When Darach Ó Scolaí began An Cléireach the image was so clear in his mind that it could have been a picture or a poem, but in the end, it took the form of a novel.

On Thursday 14th August 2014 at 8.00pm in King John's Castle (cafe entrance) Des Geraghty will deliver a presentation on Brendan Behan and his legacy in Irish literature in both the Irish and English languages. He will combine personal recollections of Brendan and the whole Behan family with the Dublin environment of their time.( in the style of any Behan occasion their might be a few songs, poems and yarns.) He will also consider the substance and impact of his books, plays and public performances'. Fifty years after his untimely death in Dublin. This talented and colourful writer's work is worthy of a 'sober' review by all those interested in the evolution of Irish literature and society in the last century.

About Des Geraghty:
Des Geraghty is a former Irish politician and trade union leader. He was president of SIPTU from 1999 to 2004. He stood unsuccessfully at the 1984 European Parliament election for the Dublin constituency as a Workers' Party candidate. He briefly served as General Secretary of the Workers' Party from 1991-1992, succeeding Seán Garland and played a prominent role in events leading up to the split in that party.[1] In 1992 Geraghty joined the newly founded Democratic Left party. He was appointed to the European Parliament in 1992 for the Dublin constituency following the resignation of Proinsias De Rossa.[2] He was a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and Industrial Policy in the European Parliament. He did not contest the 1994 European Parliament election. He stood unsuccessfully as a Labour Party candidate in the 2002 Seanad election for the Labour Panel.
He has published several books including one about folk singer Luke Kelly. He is also a member of the board of Poetry Ireland.

The only surviving founding member of the Dubliners Barney McKenna has died suddenly. He was 72.
McKenna played with the legendary band since 1962. They celebrated their 50th anniversary with a series of concerts in Christ Church Cathedral in January and are also participating in the official Irish single for the forthcoming European Championships.
McKenna lived in Howth and he died this morning unexpectedly.
Broadcaster and banjo player Ciaran Hanrahan said: "From a musical pont of view, he was the single most important figure in the development of the tenor banjo in traditional music. It was not used up until the 1960s. He popularised it. He inspired a whole generation."He described McKenna as one of "life's gentlemen" and one of the most entertaining people you could meet. "On a personal level he was such a decent, generous, humble man. He wore his talent very lightly."
The Dubliners have had an incalcuable impact on the Irish ballad tradition. They are arguably the most famous Irish traditional ballad group of all time and were responsible for the resurrection of some Irish songs that had died out.
