Born in St Asaph, Denbighshire, Evans was an inexperienced youth striker with Manchester City, when he arrived at Norwich City on loan in 2007. He made a major impact during his time at Carrow Road, scoring 10 goals in 28 league appearances, before returning to his parent club. He was subsequently sold to Sheffield United for £3,000,000 in 2009. Evans scored on his debut for Wales in 2008, and has so far scored twice in his 13 appearances.
On 20 April 2012, Evans was convicted of rape and sentenced to five years imprisonment. Evans maintains his innocence and has lodged an appeal.
Born in Rhyl, Denbighshire, Evans began his playing career in Rhyl and was spotted by highly respected football scoutJohn Reardon. Evans spent several years scoring many goals in Chester City's youth set-up before it folded. He scored the winning goal in the Nathan Fennah Memorial game at the Deva Stadium in Chester City's U12s' 1–0 win against Wigan U12s. Evans played and starred for Moss Valley Rovers in many summer tournaments in the North West.
Since filming this video, Ched Evans has issued an 'apology' similar to the one I mention he should make - (http://bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30727380). However, the fact that he waited until Oldham withdrew their interest to make the apology makes me question its integrity.

Ched Evans is a former professional footballer who has just been released from prison after serving 2.5 years of his 5-year sentence for rape. Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill says she "wanted to voice my opinion" by threatening to have her name removed from a stand at Sheffield United if the club allowed convicted rapist Ched Evans to train with them.
Ennis-Hill told the club she wanted her name removed from one of the stands at Bramall Lane if Evans went ahead with training with the team on his release from prison, and police were called to investigate some of the subsequent reaction on social media site Twitter.
Evans, 25, had served half of a five-year jail sentence for raping a woman in a hotel room in Rhyl in 2011 when he was released on 17 October.
The club later withdrew its offer to Evans.

Ched Evans Official Statment - 'I'M Determined To Clear My Name'
Ched Evans releases video statement declaring wish to return to football :-
Footballer Ched Evans, who was found guilty of raping a woman in a hotel, has released a video statement announcing his determination to play again.
The video was posted on his website following his release from prison last Friday after serving half of a five year prison sentence.
In the video Evans describes his guilt over cheating on partner Natasha Massey, who appears alongside him, and said he made “an incredibly foolish decision.”
The former Sheffield United striker said: “I hurt the woman I love with all my heart. Since that night I constantly regretted my act of infidelity and the damage that has been done on so many fronts because of it.
“The support that has been shown by Natasha our friends and family during the trial and the time spent in prison has kept me strong. It can’t have been an easy thing to have stood by someone who the court found guilty of such a destructive act.”
He said his lawyers had already taken steps to overturn the conviction and the sex was “consensual”.
Wearing a dark shirt and tie, the 25-year-old Welshman said: “Now that I have served the custodial part of my sentence of two and a half years, it is my hope that I will be able to return to football.
"If that is possible then I will do so with humility, having learnt a very painful lesson.
"I would like a second chance."
He added: “I don't believe I have a given right to play again, but for any club to take me on, I have learned a valuable lesson.
I know that over time I can prove myself to be a positive influence, not just on the pitch but also in the community."

Sheffield United Fans Chant in SUPPORT Of Ched Evans
Sheffield United fans chanted their support for convicted rapist Ched Evans on Saturday night, in the club’s first game since their former player was released from jail. Almost half the travelling fans at Bradford City’s Valley Parade voiced their support for the 25-year-old, who left Wymott Prison on Friday morning, as co-Chairmen Kevin McCabe and Jim Phipps continue to suggest he might by re-employed by the club. At Bradford’s Forster Square station, 20 fans chanted: ‘He does what he wants, he does what he wants, Chedwyn Evans, he does what he wants.’ Police took no action. As United played out a 2-0 win supporters could be heard singing, ‘Super, super Ched, super Chedwyn Evans’. The club’s fan base is divided by Evans, who served half of a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old waitress. A petition against his re-signing has more than 150,000 signatures, but the overwhelming attitude of United fans at Bradford was one of support. Sheffield United patron and women’s rights campaigner Charlie Webster said she would cease her involvement with the club if he is re-signed. ‘I don’t believe it’s sending the right message to the next generation to employ a convicted rapist,’ she said.

8 January 2015: Julia Hartley-Brewer on the Ched Evans case (BBC Question Time)
I've long been an admirer of Julia Hartley-Brewer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_Hartley-Brewer, the broadcaster and columnist.
Occasionally I'm asked what my favourite media interview has been to date. It's probably this interview with Julia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khShsJaRVrY in March 2013 - only a month after J4MB was launched - when Julia was working for LBC Radio (she announced live on air three weeks ago that she was leaving the station). I was talking on my mobile, and I find the lack of face-to-face contact in such radio interviews frustrating, but her friendly tone was welcome. It became apparent she'd gone to the trouble of reading our consultation document - the precursor to our 2015 general election manifesto https://j4mb.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/141228-v6-general-election-manifesto.pdf - and after outlining some of the content, she uttered a line which made me laugh out loud:
"I'm very surprised to say this, Mike, but I have an awful feeling you may have a point, scary as it is!"
Julia had probably spent more time preparing for our short discussion than anyone who's interviewed me before or since, sometimes for much longer pieces, whether for TV or radio. She's a consummate professional.
I was interested to watch her contribution to last Thursday's Question Time, in which a lady in the audience asked the following question:
"After serving his sentence for rape, should footballer Ched Evans be given a chance to continue with his career?"
To my mind, Julia's response was the only one from any of the five panelists which demonstrated intellect, fair-mindedness, and compassion. The responses from the first two of the other panelists (below) were predictably woeful, while the final two, both highly intelligent men, let themselves down:
- Liz Kendall, Labour MP since 2010, Shadow Minister for Care and Older People, former Special Adviser to Harriet Harman and Patricia Hewitt;
- Vince Cable, Lib Dem MP and Anti-Business Secretary, a prime mover behind the government's bullying of FTSE100 companies (FTSE350 companies are next in line) into appointing more women onto their boards despite the compelling evidence base https://c4mb.wordpress.com/improving-gender-diversity-on-boards-leads-to-a-decline-in-corporate-performance-the-evidence/ which Campaign for Merit in Business http://c4mb.wordpress.com presented to House of Commons and House of Lords inquiries, showing that one predictable consequence will be corporate financial decline.
- David Davis, the Conservative MP who I've been saying since 2005 should have been elected party leader, rather than David Cameron. To be honest, I'd have opted for a houseplant rather than Dave;
- Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia.

I'm standing by boyfriend Ched Evans | This Morning
In April 2012 professional footballer Ched Evans was found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman who was too drunk to give consent to sex. Ched was sentenced to five years in prison but is due to be released soon after serving just two years.
Over 140,000 people have signed a petition to prevent Ched from returning to play for Sheffield United - but after serving time in jail, should he be given a second chance?
Speaking exclusively to us today, Ched's girlfriend Natasha Massey, who's standing by her boyfriend and campaigning for him to be allowed to return to the pitch, along with Ched's sister Kylie Evans.

She was part of a high profile backlash that eventually forced the club into a U-turn, revoking its offer to allow Evans to use its facilities.

Now, in an interview with ITV, the 28-year-old Ennis-Hill has talked about her decision to take a stand.
She said: "I said what I wanted to say and how I felt. it wasn't about putting pressure on the club or anything like that.
"It was solely about how I felt in that position, being associated with the club and yeah it was a bit of a stressful time but I'm glad I said what I felt."

In the rest of the interview, which can be seen here, the athlete discusses her plans to compete in the 2016 Olympics.
When Ms Ennis-Hill made her original statement, she said: "I believe being a role model to young people is a huge honour and those in positions of influence in communities should respect the role they play in young people's lives and set a good example.
"If Evans was to be re-signed by the club it would completely contradict these beliefs."

Evans, 25, was found guilty in April 2012 of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel bedroom. He admitted he had sex with the woman in 2011 but denied raping her, claiming it was consensual.
A jury decided that the woman was too drunk to consent and the former Sheffield United player was jailed for five years. He was released from prison in October after serving half the sentence and has continued to maintain his innocence.

He is now looking to return to football and this has caused a lot of widespread debate. In this video, I offer my thoughts on the matter. This is an ever-changing news story and as a result, some of what I say may become slightly out-dated as new developments happen, but the sentiments at the heart of what I'm saying remain true for this and any other cases of convicted criminals hoping to return to professional sport.
