Human rights are commonly understood as "inalienable fundamental rights to which a person is inherently entitled simply because she or he is a human being." Human rights are thus conceived as universal (applicable everywhere) and egalitarian (the same for everyone). These rights may exist as natural rights or as legal rights, in both national and international law. The doctrine of human rights in international practice, within international law, global and regional institutions, in the policies of states and in the activities of non-governmental organizations, has been a cornerstone of public policy around the world. The idea of human rights states, "if the public discourse of peacetime global society can be said to have a common moral language, it is that of human rights." Despite this, the strong claims made by the doctrine of human rights continue to provoke considerable skepticism and debates about the content, nature and justifications of human rights to this day. Indeed, the question of what is meant by a "right" is itself controversial and the subject of continued philosophical debate.
The George SorosOpen Society Foundation is the primary donor of the Human Rights Watch, contributing $100 Million of $128 Million of contributions and grants received by the HRW in the 2011 financial year.
Human Rights Watch was founded as a private American NGO in 1978, under the name of Helsinki Watch, to monitor the former Soviet Union's compliance with the Helsinki Accords. Helsinki Watch adopted a methodology of publicly "naming and shaming" abusive governments through media coverage and through direct exchanges with policymakers. By shining the international spotlight on human rights violations in the Soviet Union and its European partners, Helsinki Watch contributed to the democratic transformations of the region in the late 1980s.

The Human Rights Act: myths and realities | Owen Jones talks...
The Human Rights Act enshrines rights British people fought for centuries, and now the Tories have pledged to scrap it. The politicians are trying to take your rights away, and much of the media have been cheering them on and spreading myths and lies. So here I take on some of the most common myths surrounding the Human Rights Act and explain why it's so important - and why we all need us to stand up and protect it.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Human rights actually save lives, reduce suffering, and empower individuals and communities. Often we tend to justify the importance of human rights through moral, political and legal arguments, but perhaps we need to highlight hard evidence more.
Do Human Rights work? If Human Rights work, how do we know that they work?
Professor Paul Hunt specialises in international and domestic human rights law. He has lived, and undertaken human rights work, in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the South Pacific. In 1998, he was nominated by the Government o

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." This is what it says in the very first Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Amal Clooney: Human Rights Superstar Or Just An Actor’s Wife?
The Associated Press is under fire for the way they tweeted about Amal Clooney. They referred to her as “actor’s wife” which seems to ignore her vast accomplishments as a human rights lawyer. Critics are accusing the AP of sexism. Ana Kasparian (The Point), John Iadarola (Think Tank), Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.
Do you understand the AP’s decision? Do you think it was sexist? Let us know in the comments below.

“She’s a renowned human rights lawyer whose clients have included Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and the state of Cambodia. She’s been appointed to several United Nations commissions, and has spent time teaching at Columbia Law School, The Hague Academy of International Law and other respected institutions.
Yet, on Saturday, when the Associated Press penned a tweet about Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin), they chose not to identify her by her many achievements but instead by her marriage to actor George Clooney.”

The Human Rights Act enshrines rights British people fought for centuries, and now the Tories have pledged to scrap it. The politicians are trying to take your rights away, and much of the media have been cheering them on and spreading myths and lies.
In 1998, he was nominated by the Government of New Zealand and elected by the United Nations to serve as an independent expert on the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1999-2002). Between 2002-2008, he served as UN Special Rapporteur on the right to the highest attainable standard of health and, in 2008, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Nordic School of Public Health. He is a member of the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex and Adjunct Professor at Waikato University, New Zealand.

Can media and popular culture strengthen the campaign for LGBTIQ human rights?
Television's 'Orange Is The New Black' and the media attention given to the transition of Caitlyn Jenner, have raised awareness about LGBTIQ concerns.
In this video, Eleni Tsetsekou and Yuri De Boer, of the Council of Europe's Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Unit, discuss whether media and popular culture interest will strengthen the LGBTIQ human rights campaign.

Human rights are often touted as a justification for socialist policies. However, it is not a lack of empathy which leads me to my free market conclusions, but rather, the belief that a free market would better provide things like healthcare, education, and living necessities for all.

Burundi only emerged from an ethnic conflict 10 years ago and still reels from the past upheavals.
More than 90 per cent of the conflicts reported in the Burundi court system are related to land disputes, the UN Human Rights Office there observes.
The Office has been documenting the right to own land and access issues, as many citizens who fled wars in the country between 1962 and 1993 return, to find their lands occupied. Former refugees returning home to reclaim their confiscated land find it difficult to integrate.
However, those who currently own the land are being dispossessed. Is it possible to solve the issue of land by making another person landless? Who has the right to land in Burundi?

Nathan Verhelst, a 44 year old man from Sint-Niklaas in Belgium, demanded and received euthanasia after several failed gender operations. Nathan's backpack of life was filled with rejection and incest. Thinking of himself as a freak, he couldn't find peace as a woman nor as a man. Three doctors decided that his life quality wasn't guaranteed anymore and gave Nathan permission for euthanasia.
After trying to convince him not to do it, his friends start to support him in his choice. Hoping he would feel loved again, and would find a reason to live. But Nathan didn't change his mind. "I'm certain", he said, "for the full 300 procent". He went. Dancing.
The lethal injection was given at the University Hospital in Brussels. Nathan suffered from unbearable psychic ànd physical pain.
I started following Nathan with my camera three years ago and documented how 'Nancy' became 'Nathan'. Little did I know the story would end this way. Among his friends, I stood beside his bed, to watch him find his freedom. The next day Nathan's story was in every newspaper in the world. Just like he wanted. This is the trailer of the documentary I'm making. About life, death, gender, identity and the quest for being loved. This connects us all. Please share.
The documentary is officially selected for IDFA2014, the biggest documentary festival in the world. To promote the doc at the festivals we started a crowdfunding. Please support the film here: indiegogo.com/projects/nathan-free-as-a-bird

After being brutally gang raped by men in East Kenya, Australian Charlotte Campbell-Stephen's horrific ordeal had just begun. When reporting the rape to the authorities, a detective told her, "No one wins rape cases in this country and that she should leave". This spurred Charlotte to instead stay and fight for justice and bring the perpetrators to account. I Will Not Be Silenced follows Charlotte through the seven-year legal battle that ensues. Through her indomitable strength and sense of outrage about sexual violence and the lack of gender equality in Kenya today, Charlotte becomes an inspiration to women, who stand by her side in her quest for justice against the odds.

Human Rights: an endless battle (Documentary of 2009 on the debates at the U.N.)
"We thought we were going to attend a UN meeting and we witnessed a racist hate fest instead". Anti-Semitic slogans, flyers praising Hitler to come back from the dead, fundamentalist propaganda... These are images that have haunted many NGOs since the 2001 Durban Conference in South Africa. It all happened a week before 9/11... As the United States waged war against terrorism and deserted UN regulations, Asian and African states took hold of the majority in the new Human Rights Council created in 2006. For the first time, a documentary says what is going on in Geneva’s UN premises. It is explaining what became of the 1948 Universal Declaration on Human Rights. What we discover there seems very far from the miraculous consensus orchestrated by Eleanor Roosevelt 60 years ago. Nowadays, the Council hosts a direct confrontation between two visions of the world. Dictatorships and authoritarian states give lessons to the few democracies present in the Assembly. As Robert Badinter - the father of death penalty’s abolition in France - puts it: "the question of human rights once more became an ideological battlefield". Words become crushing weapons in this new Assembly. Should we forbid the defamation of religions in order to combat racism at an international level? Or does it constitute a regression when it hides discriminations made in the name of religion in certain countries? This is a very sensitive issue on the eve of the Second Durban Conference: America and European countries threaten to boycott the process...

UNITED NATIONS
UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
Simplified Version
This simplified version of the 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been created especially for young people.
1. We Are All Born Free & Equal. We are all born free. We all have our own thoughts and ideas. We should all be treated in the same way.
2. Don't Discriminate. These rights belong to everybody, whatever our differences.
3. The Right to Life. We all have the right to life, and to live in freedom and safety.
4. No Slavery. Nobody has any right to make us a slave. We cannot make anyone our slave.
5. No Torture. Nobody has any right to hurt us or to torture us.
6. You Have Rights No Matter Where You Go. I am a person just like you!
7. We're All Equal Before the Law. The law is the same for everyone. It must treat us all fairly.
8. Your Human Rights Are Protected by Law. We can all ask for the law to help us when we are not treated fairly.
9. No Unfair Detainment. Nobody has the right to put us in prison without good reason and keep us there, or to send us away from our country.
10. The Right to Trial. If we are put on trial this should be in public. The people who try us should not let anyone tell them what to do.
11. We're Always Innocent Till Proven Guilty. Nobody should be blamed for doing something until it is proven. When people say we did a bad thing we have the right to show it is not true.
12. The Right to Privacy. Nobody should try to harm our good name. Nobody has the right to come into our home, open our letters, or bother us or our family without a good reason.
13. Freedom to Move. We all have the right to go where we want in our own country and to travel as we wish.
14. The Right to Seek a Safe Place to Live. If we are frightened of being badly treated in our own country, we all have the right to run away to another country to be safe.
15. Right to a Nationality. We all have the right to belong to a country.
16. Marriage and Family. Every grown-up has the right to marry and have a family if they want to. Men and women have the same rights when they are married, and when they are separated.
17. The Right to Your Own Things. Everyone has the right to own things or share them. Nobody should take our things from us without a good reason.
18. Freedom of Thought. We all have the right to believe in what we want to believe, to have a religion, or to change it if we want.
19. Freedom of Expression. We all have the right to make up our own minds, to think what we like, to say what we think, and to share our ideas with other people.
20. The Right to Public Assembly. We all have the right to meet our friends and to work together in peace to defend our rights. Nobody can make us join a group if we don't want to.
21. The Right to Democracy. We all have the right to take part in the government of our country. Every grown-up should be allowed to choose their own leaders.
22. Social Security. We all have the right to affordable housing, medicine, education, and childcare, enough money to live on and medical help if we are ill or old.
23. Workers' Rights. Every grown-up has the right to do a job, to a fair wage for their work, and to join a trade union.
24. The Right to Play. We all have the right to rest from work and to relax.
25. Food and Shelter for All. We all have the right to a good life. Mothers and children, people who are old, unemployed or disabled, and all people have the right to be cared for.
26. The Right to Education. Education is a right. Primary school should be free. We should learn about the United Nations and how to get on with others. Our parents can choose what we learn.
27. Copyright. Copyright is a special law that protects one's own artistic creations and writings; others cannot make copies without permission. We all have the right to our own way of life and to enjoy the good things that art, science and learning bring.
28. A Fair and Free World. There must be proper order so we can all enjoy rights and freedoms in our own country and all over the world.
29. Responsibility. We have a duty to other people, and we should protect their rights and freedoms.
30. No One Can Take Away Your Human Rights.

One of the most dynamic aspects of law is that of Human Rights. Sir Geoffrey Nice has spent his career in this area and discusses its origns:http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/human-rights-philosophy-and-history
The philosophical and historical development of what may be regarded as essential human rights will be traced. It is essential to understand this development before criticising – or complaining about – modern Human Rights law.
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College Website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/human-rights-philosophy-and-history

ADRA is fighting for the basic rights of at-risk individuals around the world. Girls and women are at risk of trafficking and abuse, the civil rights of minorities are ignored, and disabled people are treated unjustly. By educating communities, advocating at the government level, and rescuing at-risk individuals, ADRA is protecting the basic human rights of people throughout the world.

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." This is what it says in the very first Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The idea of Human Rights is one of the most important fundaments of human co-existence. At the same time human rights are subject to fierce debates and Human Rights violations are common all over the world.
But what exactly are Human Rights? Who is responsible for protecting them? And do they really apply to all people?
This is the first part of the series "Focus Human Rights". It consists of this overview clip an three more specific clips for each of the three dimensions of Human Rights. Check out our Channel for the other clips!
