Frieden graduated from Oberlin College (BA), Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (MD) and Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health (MPH). He completed training in internal medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and sub-specialty training in infectious diseases at Yale University. One brother, Jeffry Frieden, is a noted international political economist and the Stanfield Professor of International Peace at Harvard University. His other brother, Ken Frieden, the B.G. Rudolph Professor at Syracuse University, specializes in nineteenth-century literature.
Frieden's work on TB in New York fostered public awareness and helped improve public funding (city, state and federal) for tuberculosis control. The epidemic was controlled rapidly, reducing overall incidence by nearly half and cutting multidrug-resistant tuberculosis by 80%. The city's program became a model for tuberculosis control. From 1996 to 2002, Frieden was based in India, assisting with national tuberculosis control efforts. As a medical officer for the World Health Organization on loan from the CDC, he helped the government of India implement the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP). The 2008 RNTCP status report estimates the nationwide program resulted in 8 million treatments and 1.4 million saved lives. While in India, Frieden worked to establish a network of Indian physicians to help India's state and local governments implement the program and helped the Tuberculosis Research Center in Chennai, India, establish a program to monitor the impact of tuberculosis control services.

CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden is facing growing criticism over the government's response to Ebola cases in Texas.
A second Ebola case in Dallas has led to more questions about the health care system's preparedness, and Frieden prompted further criticism by saying Monday that "we have to rethink the way we address Ebola infection control."
There are also questions about how 26-year-old Nina Pham - a nurse who helped treat a man who died of Ebola in Dallas - contracted the virus, while others are still urging the administration to implement a travel ban.

CDC's Tom Frieden on Ebola: 'We Will Stop it in its Tracks'
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Tom Frieden and other witnesses testify before a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on U.S. efforts to control the ongoing Ebola outbreak. Ebola House Hearing. WATCH LIVE: U.S. House Hearing on Ebola Response
Say You're Sorry: CDC Director Grilled on Ebola Mistakes
(NBC) A senior hospital official, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other federal officials are preparing to testify before a House Oversight Committee hearing in Washington Thursday. Expect plenty of apologies and assurances of lessons learned.
But officials will also push back against criticism that they were not prepared enough.
The hearing’s meant to call officials onto the carpet to explain the frightening spread of Ebola in the U.S. —one imported case and now two nurses sick from that patient. Although the CDC has been saying it was likely to happen, the fallout has been enormous.
And officials know what’s expected of them: to admit mistakes, apologize and say what they’re doing to improve matters.
“It’s hard for me to put into words how we felt when our patient Thomas Eric Duncan lost his struggle with Ebola on October 8,” Dr. Daniel Varga of Texas Health Resources, says in written testimony submitted ahead of the hearing.
“Unfortunately, in our initial treatment of Mr. Duncan, despite our best intentions and a highly skilled medical team, we made mistakes. We did not correctly diagnose his symptoms as those of Ebola. We are deeply sorry,” he adds. Communication wasn’t clear, either, Varga says.
But he says the hospital followed CDC and Texas state guidelines and, as planned, called in infectious disease specialists from the Dallas County Health and Human Services Department. Despite all that, things went wrong and nurses Nina Pham and Amber Vinson became infected too. He says the hospital has given a refresher training course to emergency department nurses and is monitoring everyone who had contact with Duncan.
CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden, who’s said he is sorry for some of the lapses, will stick to his guns in asserting that Ebola is not a threat to the U.S.
“Despite these latest incidents, we remain confident that our public health and health care systems can prevent an Ebola outbreak here, and that the authorities and investments provided by the Congress have put us in a strong position to protect Americans,” Frieden says in prepared testimony.
And that means going to the source of the virus in West Africa. “We are working to strengthen the global response, which requires close collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and additional assistance from our international partners,” Frieden says, adding that more than 1,000 CDC staff members have helped support the effort.
Frieden is asking for money to do more. “Before this outbreak began, we had proposed, in the Fiscal Year 2015 President’s Budget, an increase of $45 million to strengthen lab networks that can rapidly diagnose Ebola and other threats, emergency operations centers that can swing into action at a moment’s notice, and trained disease detectives who can find an emerging threat and stop it quickly,” Frieden said. “Building these capabilities around the globe is key to preventing this type of event elsewhere.”

CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden told Face the Nation Sunday morning that the emergence of a second ebola case in Dallas showed that “clearly there was a breach in protocol.”
A health worker who had cared for ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan tested positive for the virus Saturday night, the first case of ebola transmission in the United States.
“We have the ability to prevent the spread of Ebola by caring safely for patients,” he said. “We know from many years of experience that it’s possible to care for patients with Ebola safely without risk to healthcare workers. But we also know that it’s hard, and that even a single breach can result in contamination.”

CDC Director Tom Frieden's Informative Ebola Q & A on Fox News - MUST SEE!
Today Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden appeared on Megyn Kelly's show on Fox News. IMO both did an excellent job. Kelly like a rabid bulldog asked intelligent and tough questions. When she did not get an answer, she asked the question again.
However, CDC Director Frieden COMPETENTLY answered every question posed.
I won't interpret the Q & A with too many of my own opinions, but listen to the Director. He made sense and IMO answered all of Kelly's questions.
Bottom Line: I thought BOTH these people did an outstanding job in this interview on putting the hard questions to the Director, and the fed answering them.
If Frieden was like this in his speeches I suspect Americans would feel far more at ease and not be so mistrustful of how Washington is handling matters.
Note: I don't think many people understand the CDC's jurisdiction and authority. The CDC does NOT have jurisdiction and control over states and local government, unless the POTUS declares a national emergency, or if we turn into a bunch of Zombies the POTUS declared martial law (in all seriousness, because the citizens are out of control and Ebola has reached epidemic proportions).
The fed, under advice by the CDC, FAA, SOS, and others, does have the authority to immediately close our borders, forbid travel to West Africa, control immigration, arrest and detain the Dr. Nancy Snyderman types (oh please Lord, please let that happen), and ban flights, but like the Director said (and I agree) there's a bigger picture here.
For example, encircling West Africa so no one goes in, and no one enters or leaves the region will make the situation worse.
To us "erecting barbed wire" and "planting land mines" sounds like swell ideas, but all that will do is cause Ebola to spread to hundreds of thousands then maybe millions in the West African population making Ebola impossible to control anywhere in the world.
I do disagree with the Fed that they should delay closing our borders. Yes, it is mean and discriminatory to lock our doors, but we're not fooling around here. This is serious and we need to get Ebola under control. A few cases are too many.
I also disagree with the Fed "defrauding" us, that taking the temperature of passengers arriving in the U.S. is going to do any good. The Fed knows that is BS and it should stop with the theatrics.
If anyone knows the jurisdiction and authority of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, please chime in.
I don't think the Agency has the authority to order State, local, private business, and health practitioners to do anything. The CDC's role is limited to advise state and local health agencies, who do in fact have the legal authority to regulate hospitals and health practitioners. (E.g. hospitals, doctors and nurses are licensed by the state. Just as our driving is regulated by the state who issued our driver's license, so too are health practitioners regulated by the state.)
This is important because I suspect our angst and anger is NOT properly directed at the CDC, to the extent your concerns are about your local hospital, not what someone is doing in Dallas, Texas.
Our complaints and concerns should be voiced via the phone and emails to our individual state health agencies. We should be contacting our local hospitals, asking what they are doing to prepare for when and if an Ebola case shows up.
But, to the extent you want international travel limited, we should be contacting the federal govt. However, IMO efforts should not be directed at the CDC. Your U.S. representatives are the people to call (Senators and House members).

CDC chief: Vaccines are the best way to prevent measles
Fox News 'The Factor' 10/15/2014, after 'Talking Point Memo' Bill O'Reilly Interviews Congressman Tim Murphy (R-PA).
O'Reilly Calls for Resignation of 'Chief Propagandist' CDC Director Thomas Frieden
(Fox News) Bill O’Reilly tonight called for the resignation of CDC Director Tom Frieden, who he said is not being forthcoming about the threat of Ebola.
“The Factor” host said it’s “very worrisome” that Nina Pham, a 26-year-old nurse who treated Thomas Eric Duncan, has been diagnosed with Ebola even though she was wearing protective gear.
O’Reilly reiterated that “there is no compelling reason why West Africans should be admitted to the USA” amid this epidemic, calling it a national security issue. He said that a new NBC News poll found that 58 percent also believe there should be a ban on flights from West African countries into the U.S.
O’Reilly’s team has asked Frieden a number of times to appear on “The Factor,” but O’Reilly said he won’t because he’s afraid.
“He knows that I know he’s not being candid, that he is spinning the situation and not being forthcoming about how the disease is being spread. Frieden should resign.”
O’Reilly said that it is “stupid and irresponsible” to believe that civilian airport employees can spot Ebola that is dormant.
“It's a dumb and dangerous ruse, and Freiden is the chief propagandist,” he said.
O’Reilly said he’s just asking for common sense, which the Obama administration is rejecting. “But I will predict tonight, they will soon reverse course,” he said.

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged Americans to vaccinate their children against measles as the number of people hit by a new outbreak of the disease climbed past 100.
CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden said in an interview with CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday that he was “very concerned” about the possibility of a large outbreak and said the best way to prevent the disease was with vaccinations he called “safe and effective.” He blamed a lack of vaccinations for the resurgence of a disease that the CDC said was eliminated in the U.S. in 2000.
“What we’ve seen is, as over the last few years, a small but growing number of people have not been vaccinated. That number is building up among young adults in society, and that makes us vulnerable,” Frieden said. “We have to make sure that measles doesn’t get a foothold in the U.S. It’s been actually eliminated from this country for 15 years. All of our cases result, ultimately, from individuals who have traveled and brought it back here.”
The CDC said that 102 people from 14 states have been reported to have measles, and that most of those cases were tied to a December outbreak at Disneyland or Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim, Calif."* John Iadarola (Think Tank), Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show) and Dave Rubin (The Rubin Report) break it down.

Megyn Kelly Goes Head to Head with CDC Director over Ebola in America
FULL Interview: Fox News Megyn Kelly Grills CDC Director Director Tom Frieden: "Do you admit we already have an outbreak"? Fox Host Goes After CDC Director Exposes His Weak Argument on Ebola Outbreak.
MUST-SEE: Megyn Kelly Interviews CDC Director Thomas Frieden.
CDC Director Responds to Calls for Resignation, Faces Off with Megyn Kelly.
She pressed him on why the U.S. doesn’t just implement a travel ban. Frieden argued they’ve done enough by recommending all non-essential travel to West Africa be stopped for Americans, as well as stepping up airport screenings, but he doesn’t want to “isolate these countries” because it will “make it harder to stop the epidemic here.”

CDC Director Tom Frieden : There Was ‘Clearly a Breach of Protocol’

Megyn Kelly's Interview With CDC Director Tom Frieden: “I’m Focused On Protecting Americans 24/7”
CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden faced off with Megyn Kelly tonight over how the agency is dealing with cases of Ebola in the United States. Kelly even brought up calls by her colleagues, including Bill O’Reilly, for him to resign for his mishandling of the situation.
Frieden kept assuring that despite a smattering of cases in the U.S., the CDC is doing everything it can to make sure contact with others is minimal and hospitals have the tools they need to treat. Kelly confronted him with past assurances that Ebola would be stopped in its tracks and wouldn’t be coming to the United States.
Kelly kept pushing him on hospitals not being fully equipped to treat Ebola before bringing up O’Reilly’s mad-as-hell call for Frieden to resign. Frieden basically dismissed those calls and insisted, “I’m focused on protecting Americans 24/7.”

CDC Director Tom Frieden's Informative Ebola Q & A on Fox News - MUST SEE!

Measles Vaccine Now A Debate Thanks To Ugly Stupid Politics
Measles Vaccine Now A Debate Thanks To Ugly Stupid Politics
