VU Library Service Charter
Victoria University Library is integral to the University's mission by enabling access to quality information, providing excellent learning spaces and services, and supporting the University's research activities.
All Library patrons are encouraged to share the values and behaviours of the University community
Library services are delivered in the context of a University-wide Learning Commons. The Learning Commons puts the student "at the centre" and provides a "one stop shop" for Library, IT, Careers and Learning Support services, to create a dynamic environment for learning and teaching.
In addition to offering traditional library collections and services, the Learning Commons provides flexible, social and study spaces and extensive student computing services, with access to staff expertise, for a supported learning experience.
Library Services
The University Library provides:
- access to extensive and high quality electronic and print information resources to support learning, teaching and research
- access to additional collections at other Australian universities and Victorian TAFE libraries
- document request services for staff and higher degree research students
- flexible learning spaces for individual silent study, group work and social learning
- high quality student computing and printing services with internet access and wireless connectivity
- knowledgeable and accurate assistance: in person, via email, phone and web
- research skills development and training for independent learning
- support and training for researchers and research students
- open access repository for University research publications and theses
- repository service for research reporting purposes and support for University digital publishing
- copyright training, guidance and support
- management of the University Art Collection
- selected services for members of the general community.
Our Service Commitment
In the delivery of our services the Library will:
- publicise and maintain advertised opening hours for the year
- provide accessible, organised and well maintained information resources
- provide well maintained study spaces that support individual and group study needs
- provide face-to-face and online assistance and instruction to enable students and staff to become self-sufficient learners and researchers
- provide services in a fair and equitable manner.
We expect that you will:
- familiarise yourself with the expectations outlined in the Student Charter
- observe the Library Conditions of Use including the proper care of Library resources and facilities
- treat staff courteously and respect the needs of other Library patrons
- comply with University policies including the Use of Copyright Materials and Appropriate use of ICT.

Collection Development
The Victoria University Library provides access to printed materials, electronic publications and other media formats to support the University’s teaching and research programs. Both current and retrospective materials are collected. The coverage is national and international in scope. There is no restriction on the purchase of foreign language material although the collection is predominately English Language.
Collection strengths, beyond the expected undergraduate requirements, have been and will continue to be developed as long as they are required to support University teaching and research. Currently collection strengths are in the areas of:
- Law
- Osteopathy
- Human movement
- Exercise science
- Sport
- Recreation
- South-East Asian studies
- Women’s studies (monographs)
- Communist and Socialist theory and politics (specifically in Australia and Russia).
Special Collections have been and will continue to be developed in the areas of:
- Australian History; Literature and Art
- Town Planning and Social Policy
- Australian Left Wing Political Groups
- Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Region
- Union of Australian Women
- Multicultural studies and immigration issues
- Timor-Leste.

The Library Conditions of Use help us maintain an environment that allows you to:
- Find resources that meet your needs and:
- Provide a place for students and staff to undertake their research and /or study
The Conditions of Use policy is part of the University Regulations which are available on the Victoria University Intranet. It covers:
- Who is entitled to use the Library
- Opening hours
- Using Library materials and equipment
- Borrowing terms and conditions, loan periods
- Unacceptable behaviour
- Infringements, overdue notices and lost items
- Disputes
