La Rochelle
La Rochelle (French pronunciation: ​[la Ê?É”.ʃɛl]) is a city in western France and a seaport on the Bay of Biscay, a part of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the capital of the Charente-Maritime department.
The city is connected to the Île de Ré by a 2.9-kilometre (1.8-mile) bridge completed on 19 May 1988. Its harbour opens into a protected strait, the Pertuis d'Antioche.
History
Antiquity
The area of La Rochelle was occupied in antiquity by the Gallic tribe of the Santones, who gave their name to the nearby region of Saintonge and the city of Saintes.
The Romans subsequently occupied the area, where they developed salt production along the coast as well as wine production, which was then re-exported throughout the Empire. Roman villas have been found at Saint-Éloi and at Les Minimes, as well as salt evaporation ponds dating from the same period.
Foundation
La Rochelle was founded during the 10th century and became an important harbour in the 12th century. The establishment of La Rochelle as a harbour was a consequence of the victory of Guillaume X, Duke of Aquitaine over Isambert de Châtelaillon in 1130 and the subsequent destruction of his harbour of Châtelaillon. In 1137, Guillaume X to all intents and purposes made La Rochelle a free port and gave it the right to establish itself as a commune. Fifty years later Eleanor of Aquitaine upheld the communal charter promulgated by her father, and for the first time in France, a city mayor was appointed for La Rochelle, Guillaume de Montmirail. Guillaume was assisted in his responsibilities by 24 municipal magistrates, and 75 notables who had jurisdiction over the inhabitants. Under the communal charter, the city obtained many privileges, such as the right to mint its own coins, and to operate some businesses free of royal taxes, factors which would favour the development of the entrepreuneurial middle-class (bourgeoisie).

We parked our motorhome at the municipal Aire de camping-car de Port-Neuf which offers automated access with all services included for EUR 12.50 per 24 hours. The parking is conveniently located along a cycling route which will take you to the heart of La Rochelle old town in just a few minutes. We cycled across the Pont de l’Ile de Ré to visit one of France’s most beautiful islands. If you drive across there is a toll but it's free for pedestrians and cyclists. On 4 August 1627 a royal French army, 11’000 strong, arrived at the Huguenot town of La Rochelle. Their arrival marked the beginning of a siege characterized by an impregnable fortress, extremely determined commanders and ingenious siege craft, manifesting above all in a 1.5 km long sea-wall, a construction seemingly impossible at its time. La Rochelle was one of the major strongholds of the Huguenots, the French Protestants, and the siege marked the climax of the reformatory struggle in France. It was the centerpiece of both the third Huguenot rebellion and the Anglo-French war of 1627-29. This is how modern historiography tells the story of the staggering siege of La Rochelle.

La Rochelle is a lively, sparkling seaside French town with a great reputation for seafood, three urban beaches and the best old port on the French Atlantic. We parked our motorhome at the municipal Aire de camping-car de Port-Neuf which offers automated access with all services included for EUR 12.50 per 24 hours. The parking is conveniently located along a cycling route which will take you to the heart of La Rochelle old town in just a few minutes.
We cycled across the Pont de l’Ile de Ré to visit one of France’s most beautiful islands. If you drive across there is a toll but it's free for pedestrians and cyclists. The island is only 30km long and 5km wide and has some long sandy beaches, vineyards, beautiful villages of whitewashed villages, salt marshes and oyster beds.
The three towers of La Rochelle are the symbols of the city. The Saint-Nicolas Tower and the Chaîne Tower frame the entrance to the Old Port, while the Lantern Tower is 200 metres away. Built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, the three towers belong to the fortifications of the city and offer a superb view of the pier and the city.

Everything is unordinary. Everything is important. Everything requires your attention. You understand that because you have no home, every place can equally be your home. On 4 August 1627 a royal French army, 11’000 strong, arrived at the Huguenot town of La Rochelle. Their arrival marked the beginning of a siege characterized by an impregnable fortress, extremely determined commanders and ingenious siege craft, manifesting above all in a 1.5 km long sea-wall, a construction seemingly impossible at its time. La Rochelle was one of the major strongholds of the Huguenots, the French Protestants, and the siege marked the climax of the reformatory struggle in France. It was the centerpiece of both the third Huguenot rebellion and the Anglo-French war of 1627-29. This is how modern historiography tells the story of the staggering siege of La Rochelle.

La Rochelle is a lively, sparkling seaside French town with a great reputation for seafood, three urban beaches and the best old port on the French Atlantic. We parked our motorhome at the municipal Aire de camping-car de Port-Neuf which offers automated access with all services included for EUR 12.50 per 24 hours. The parking is conveniently located along a cycling route which will take you to the heart of La Rochelle old town in just a few minutes.
We cycled across the Pont de l’Ile de Ré to visit one of France’s most beautiful islands. If you drive across there is a toll but it's free for pedestrians and cyclists. The island is only 30km long and 5km wide and has some long sandy beaches, vineyards, beautiful villages of whitewashed villages, salt marshes and oyster beds.
The three towers of La Rochelle are the symbols of the city. The Saint-Nicolas Tower and the Chaîne Tower frame the entrance to the Old Port, while the Lantern Tower is 200 metres away. Built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, the three towers belong to the fortifications of the city and offer a superb view of the pier and the city.

La Rochelle
La Rochelle (French pronunciation: ​[la Ê?É”.ʃɛl]) is a city in western France and a seaport on the Bay of Biscay, a part of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the capital of the Charente-Maritime department.
The city is connected to the Île de Ré by a 2.9-kilometre (1.8-mile) bridge completed on 19 May 1988. Its harbour opens into a protected strait, the Pertuis d'Antioche.
History
Antiquity
The area of La Rochelle was occupied in antiquity by the Gallic tribe of the Santones, who gave their name to the nearby region of Saintonge and the city of Saintes.
The Romans subsequently occupied the area, where they developed salt production along the coast as well as wine production, which was then re-exported throughout the Empire. Roman villas have been found at Saint-Éloi and at Les Minimes, as well as salt evaporation ponds dating from the same period.
Foundation
La Rochelle was founded during the 10th century and became an important harbour in the 12th century. The establishment of La Rochelle as a harbour was a consequence of the victory of Guillaume X, Duke of Aquitaine over Isambert de Châtelaillon in 1130 and the subsequent destruction of his harbour of Châtelaillon. In 1137, Guillaume X to all intents and purposes made La Rochelle a free port and gave it the right to establish itself as a commune. Fifty years later Eleanor of Aquitaine upheld the communal charter promulgated by her father, and for the first time in France, a city mayor was appointed for La Rochelle, Guillaume de Montmirail. Guillaume was assisted in his responsibilities by 24 municipal magistrates, and 75 notables who had jurisdiction over the inhabitants. Under the communal charter, the city obtained many privileges, such as the right to mint its own coins, and to operate some businesses free of royal taxes, factors which would favour the development of the entrepreuneurial middle-class (bourgeoisie).
