A new profile of American engineering and construction corporation CH2M Hill highlights a potential bidder in Canadian water and wastewater privatization deals.

The profile is one of several published jointly by CUPE and the Polaris Institute. The Public risks, private profits series shines a spotlight on water and wastewater services corporations who may bid on Canadian P3s.

The profiles provide overviews of corporate structures and governance, lobby activity, past and present P3 contracts, and background on legal troubles or controversies.

Suez, Suez Environnement and GDF Suez

In 1997, the merger of French corporations Compagnie Financière de Suez and Lyonnaise des Eaux created the energy, waste and water infrastructure company Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux. In 2008, after years of mergers, acquisitions and corporate realignment, the company – which by then was known simply as ‘Suez’ – was split into two separate entities: GDF SUEZ and Suez Environnement. This split was the result of Suez’s decision to merge with Gaz de France to create the energy multinational GDF Suez.

Today the Polaris Institute has release an in-depth report titled “ Unplugging the Dirty Energy Economy: A Corporate Profile of the Canadian Pipeline Company TransCanada.

TransCanada is the company behind the Energy East and Keystone XL oil pipeline projects as well as many other natural gas pipeline projects.

It is our hope to share this resource with as many relevant activists and communities along the route of TransCanada pipelines as possible. It is meant both as a warning for communities as well as a tool to better understand and unravel TransCanada’s activities and tactics.
