Oman is a country in the Middle East. Current GDP per capita has expanded continuously in the past half-a-century. It grew 339% in the Sixties reaching a peak growth of 1,370% in the Seventies scaling back to modest 12% growth in the turbulent Eighties and rising again to 34% in the Nineties.
This is a chart of trend of gross domestic product of Oman at market prices estimated by the International Monetary Fund with figures in millions of Omani Rials.
For purchasing power parity comparisons, the US Dollar is exchanged at 0.29 Omani Rials only. Mean wages were $15.99 per manhour in 2009.
Oman's economic performance improved significantly in 1999 due largely to the mid-year upturn in oil prices. The government is moving ahead with privatization of its utilities, the development of a body of commercial law to facilitate foreign investment, and increased budgetary outlays. Oman liberalized its markets in an effort to accede to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and gained membership in 2000.
When Oman declined as an entrepot for arms and slaves in the mid-19th century, much of its former prosperity was lost, and the economy turned almost exclusively to agriculture, camel and goat herding, fishing, and traditional handicrafts. Today, oil fuels the economy and revenues from petroleum products have enabled Oman's dramatic development over the past 30 years.
For a period, Oman was a moderate regional power, formerly having a sultanate extending across the Strait of Hormuz to Iran, and modern day Pakistan, and far south to Zanzibar on the coat of south-east Africa. Over time, as its power declined, the sultanate came under heavy influence from the United Kingdom, though Oman was never formally part of the British Empire, or a British protectorate. The Omani royal family claim that Oman has been ruled by the Al Saiddynasty since 1744, although without substantial proof. Oman has long-standing military and political ties with the United Kingdom and the United States, although it maintains an independent foreign policy.

Oman’s 73-year-old monarch, Sultan Qaboos bin Said has been out of sight for more than three months receiving medical treatment in Germany. Some analysts fear a looming succession crisis could destabilize one of the Middle East’s most peaceful countries. Other analysts say Oman’s unsustainable economy is more worrying than the immediate future of its monarchy.
During the recent Muslim holiday, this video prayer for Sultan Qaboos was posted by someone on Twitter. “God give him good heath and extend his age,” said the woman in the video.

Iranian, Omani Ministers Ask Broadening of Trade Ties
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Industries, Mines and Trade Minister Mohammad Reza Nematzaeh and his Omani counterpart Ali bin Masoud Al-Sunaidi underscored the necessity for the two countries' joint efforts to further develop bilateral economic and trade relations.
The remarks were made after the 15th Joint Economic Commission of Iran and Oman meeting in Masqat on Wednesday, headed by the two ministers.
The two officials agreed in a joint press conference after the commission meeting that there are still a lot of unexplored potentials for the further expansion of bilateral trade relations.
The Omani minister said that major part of the discussion in the 15th Joint Economic Commission meeting was focused on ways and methods that should be employed at the service of boosting bilateral trade.
Iranian officials have repeatedly underlined that they attach great importance to the consolidation of Tehran's relations with the Middle-East countries, specially with the Persian Gulf littoral states, in order to protect and promote peace and security in the region.
Tehran's Ambassador to Masqat Ali Akbar Sibouyeh announced on Wednesday that Iran and Oman were discussing plans to lift visa requirements in a reciprocal move.
"Iran and Oman enjoy highly good relations and no economic, trade or political issue can impair the two countries' ties," Sibouyeh told reporters.
"The two countries are in talks over lifting visa requirements and developing trade relations," he added.
Noting that the volume of trade exchanges between Iran and Oman stood at $1bln, Sibouyeh said that the agreement to build gas pipeline between the two countries would soon be implemented after preliminary works by the technical committees are complete.

Envoy: Iran to Build Hospital Complex in Oman
The hospital complex will also include a four-star hotel for the convenience of patients and specialists, Sibeveih said at a press conference on Monday.
The 400-bed hospital will be equipped with the latest medical facilities and has the potential to become a hub for patients from Oman and other Persian Gulf countries, he was quoted by the Times of Oman as saying.
Around 400 to 500 people will be working at the hospital, a majority of whom would be Iranians, he said, adding that the facility will also create many job opportunities for Omani nationals.
Iranian medical doctors based in Germany, the US and Britain will also visit the hospital on a regular basis to perform certain operations, Sibeveih noted.
The construction of the complex will begin soon, Sibeveih said, adding that there will be a well-equipped training department for Omani nurses and doctors as well.

A few days earlier the same user tweeted: “I miss you Papa #Qaboos.”
Succession crisis
Gulf State Analytics co-founder Giorgio Cafiero said the sultan’s fans are not the only ones concerned for his health. After decades of peace and prosperity, some Omanis and their neighbors are worried, if the sultan's health fails, a succession crisis could potentially throw the country into chaos.
“He left for Germany three months ago on July 10 and he has not returned to Oman. Obviously, the longer he is gone, the more suspicions will be stoked that his health conditions are very serious,” said Cafiero.
The Omani government says Sultan Qaboos is “in good health and continuing to follow the medical treatment he has been prescribed” but if this ceases to be true, no one knows who will be in charge, said Cafiero.
“While it is possible that the succession process will happen smoothly, there are grave political risks that are on the minds of many people in Oman right now,” said Cafiero.
If the royal family can’t agree on a successor who is viewed as legitimate by the economic elite, the military and the general public, Oman will be at risk of a prolonged power struggle, he said.
And the instability that would ensue would not just affect Oman, he added. "The sultan has long had a hand in regional politics in the Arabian Peninsula and worldwide."
“One of the key pillars of Oman’s foreign policy under Sultan Qaboos has been basically ‘be a friend of almost everyone.’ In the region, and also everyone in the world,” said Cafiero.
Peacekeeper role
These ‘friendships’ include rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran, he said, and Oman also is a key peacekeeper between Iran and the West.
Omani foreign policy is not likely to make a large shift under a new leader, but a political crisis could shake the country’s ability to maintain this delicate balance.
Additionally, said Andreas Krieg, an assistant professor from King's College London who also advises the Qatari Armed Forces, Gulf Cooperation Council countries, known as ‘the GCC,’ are worried about regionally security.
“The concern is mostly, again, from Saudi Arabia and other players within the GCC who fear that there could be an instability within Oman, politically and domestically which could create another center of instability on the Arabian Peninsula,” said Krieg.
Of particular concern to GCC countries is that Omani waters share the Strait of Hormuz with Iran. The strait is one of the world’s most strategic waterways with 20 percent of global petroleum products passing through it.
Possible plan
Krieg said it is not time to panic, though, since it is believed the sultan has named an unknown successor in the event his family cannot come to a consensus.
“Generally [the sultan] himself is very widely respected. Even among those who are critical of his social and economic policies, they still respect him as a monarch, and I think they would respect any one he chooses to be his successor,” said Krieg.
The state of the sultan’s health is “just speculation,” Krieg also cautioned, saying the real danger for Oman's future is economic instability. Whoever is in charge, he said, now has an uphill battle to develop a sustainable economy that can create jobs for its rapidly growing population amid diminishing oil returns.
Simply put, Krieg said the sultan’s government has raised the standard of living by hiring large numbers of civil servants in Oman, and now the money is running out.

Iran, Oman to extend economic ties
TEHRAN, Jan. 08(MNA) – Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade announced that Iran-Oman economic ties, particularly in the fields of oil and banking, would enter a new phase of extension.
At the end of 15th Joint Economic Commission of Iran and Oman, the two countries signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement. Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh, Iranian Minister, said the participation of 200 Iranian businessmen and producers in this gathering proves Iran’s will to extend its economic relations with Oman.
Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Head of Oman’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, for his part expressed Muscat’s will to cooperate with Iran in different economic projects and said, “our aim of this collaboration is to produce competitive goods for the regional market.”
Signing the document, Tehran and Muscat will boost cooperation on oil, gas, petrochemistry, electricity, water, fishery, tourism, telecommunication infrastructures, insurance, and banking issues.
