Münster (Germany): Social centre opens its doors

mu-zollamt

We have squatted a house! What happened?

We have opened the doors to the old Hauptzollamt in the Sonnenstraße 85 in Münster, Germany on the second weekend of October [Oct 9] for us and everybody! The building has been empty for several years. It costs, according to Westfälische Nachrichten (local newspaper), „several million.“ This is too expensive for us. But we would not give a single Euro for it either. We want the Zollamt to be a non-commercial space, for meetings, discussions and workshops, for art and music, a place for neighbourhood community and joint organisation. In short, this space is going to be transformed into a social centre – a space where everyone feels welcome.

Lecce: Binario68 evicted, ex post office occupied

Binario_68_ex_stabile_delle_poste_via_Leuca_Lecce

Binario 68, an eclectic squat born in March 2014 in a huge disused tobacco factory in the suburbs of Lecce, was evicted by cops and Digos in the early hours of Wednesday 2nd September. After a year and a half of initiatives, meetings, talks, concerts, parties, exhibitions, tattoo circuses and other activities, the occupiers were thrown out of their home by the usual bastards in uniform, but not before resisting till the end.

A spontaneous demo through the centre of the town, a confrontation with the mayor of Lecce in the corridors of the town hall, a lot of noise and rubbish bins upturned on pavements following the intervention of the cops, as many people arrived in solidarity from all over the province. The day ended with the occupation of another abandoned building, just to show how the Binario 68 squatters, however varied a group they are, don’t like the city of Lecce, its luxury shops and restaurants, prudish citizens, political leaders, radical chic leftists, historic centre transformed into a disgusting shop window for rich shoppers, cops, cameras, fascists, and so on. Amsterdam: The Elephant, new social center threatened with eviction

20150726_Olifant_Eerste_van_Swindenstraat_391_Amsterdam

On the 26th of July a commercial space at the Eerste van Swindenstraat 391 in Amsterdam that had been left empty by property speculators was squatted with the intention of transforming this empty shell into a community social centre: The Elephant.
This space was managed by real estate agency Van Maarschaalkerwaart, known to deliberately leave properties empty for a long time, as a means to make profit through speculation on property markets.

This is a widespread trend amongst property corporations, contributing to the gentrification process in the Dapperbuurt in which small businesses and low-income family are displaced from the neighborhood, through the raising of rents, lack of maintenance and other means. This has taken shape in the destruction of community and cultural spaces, as well as pressure on small businesses, forcing closures. This feature of the gentrification process can be noted clearly in the the closure of two social centres in the Dapperbuurt, as a result of corporations such as DeKey raising the rent to extortionate rates, in order to sell to property developers, speculators, hipster bars, and chain stores. London: Lewisham and Southwark College occupied, evicted

lewishamoccup

On Sunday 19 July, in the middle of the night and after much planning, a group of around 15 members of the Southwark and Lewisham community including LESOCO (Lewisham and Southwark College) students, occupied the Camberwell campus of LESOCO to resist its closure. They locked the gates and barred the doors, claiming the space for the community and wrenching it from the claws of managers, bureaucrats and the market. The plan was to use the campus for community education and organising and to stop management from clearing the building out by the end of the month. They damaged nothing. They wanted the building kept for further education.

Amstelveen (NL): Island squatted

media_xl_3176845

Twenty squatters have been there a week on the Amsteleiland, which is on the edge of Amstelveen and Ouderkek aan de Amstel. Two years ago the people living on the island had to leave to make way for a ‘millionaire’s enclave’ which has never appeared. Developer Marco Krol bought the island in 2009 and planned to build swanky villas, but the plans went awry.
The squatters are planning a BBQ for the neighbourhood.

Brighton: Radical Bank

radical-bank-brighton

I am writing on behalf of The Radical Bank of Brighton & Hove. We are a diverse group of people who have come together partly in response to the deprivations of the austerity measures enacted by European governments. We refuse to accept their claims that austerity is necessary, indeed, we understand that it has done nothing to improve economic health. Instead, we recognise that this current economic regime has only resulted in impoverishment and misery; it is a means of weakening the public infrastructures relied on by so many, for the purposes of privatization and profit. We refuse to watch as our future is sold to the highest bidder. In response, we have recently reclaimed an abandoned building on 1 Preston Road, in Brighton, previously used as a bank.

Stockholm (Sweden): opening of a new squat, Högdalens new Folkets hus

2015-05_Stockholm_Folketshus-a

We are a group who on Saturday 23rd May re-opened the old school building on Rangstaplan 22 in Högdalen Centrum. We did this because of the plans to demolish the building soon. The decision to do so was taken over the head of the local people. A former public space has without the local communitys’ consent been sold cheaply to a private developer who’s planning on building expensive private housing on the land. Protests and alternative suggestions, like using the building as an elderly home or community center, were ignored by the local politicians and decision makers. [Read More]
