I found this computer in almost new old stock condition at a yard sale. This video is my recording of putting it together and starting it up.
This is my original IBM Personal Computer in all its 4.77 MHz glory, now finally working again after two blown capacitors put it out of commission when I last tried it a year ago. I got this PC, including the original keyboard and IBMCGA color monitor, many years ago from the original owner, who used it as his work computer (it had the company's ID sticker on the case). Originally a 256K dual-floppy machine, I added more memory, a multi-function board, and a 20 MB SeagateMFM hard drive.
Once I get the CGA video board working again, it will be restored to exactly how I had it a decade ago. Amazingly the original battery for the clock/calendar still seems to be keeping the time somehow! As far as I can tell, the NiCad "blue barrel" battery is original to the multifunction board (circa 1987-1988) and has never been replaced.
I also give an example of how some classic DOS CGA games are *not* compatible with modern VGA video displays and will just show a garbled screen.

"How to Use Your IBM PC in 10 EasyVideoLessons."
In 1982, I wrote, co-produced and co-directed with my then partner Marijane Lynch this 10 Chapter video teaching users how to use their new IBM PC. At that time, the computer state-of the art was about 128K of RAM. Imagine how powerful your smart phone is compared to the first IBM personal computer.
We formed a company called Kennen Publishing to market this and two other similar videocassettes for the Apple II and the long forgotten Apple III. IBMNational Educational Marketing found our how-to video and sole-sourced contracted our little Mill Valley, CA mom and pop video production company to create and 8 and 1/2 hour Video TrainingSeries for Educators that IBM gave it away to school systems around the US to teach teachers what this new personal computer was all about and how it could be used in education.
This first IBM PC video won the Video ReviewMagazine's Viera Award as the best how-to video in 1983, a year after Jane Fonda won the same award for her Workout video. I'm posting all 10 chapters as archive background about how we saw computers back in 1982. Lauri Goldman was the mystery woman at the keyboard, Jack Hanson narrated, Richard Favaro did art direction, set design, lighting & camera, Michael Baird edited under the post production direction of the late, great Richard Scott, graphics by Linus Maurer and Julia Gennert, computer consultants were JaneCase and Steve Greenberg. Let's browse the Web with an old but magnificient IBMModel 5155 Portable Computer (1984) : Intel 8088 @4,77 MHz - 640 KB of RAM - 20 MB RLLHard Drive (Seagate ST238R) - Built-in 9'' amber CGA display. This transportable computer weights no more than 13,6 kg. Software : Antonio Lopez Molero's PPPD for DOSPacketDriver + MSDOS 6.22 + Bobcat (Lynx port to DOS) web brower. I used an HP Laptop running OpenBSD 4.4 as a PPP gateway, allowing the IBM 5155 to connect to Internet via a RS232 cable. The laptop is connected to a DSL Router via a wireless NIC. This video is a basic illustration of the method described in a PDF document I wrote some times ago, explaining how to connect old computers to Internet via RS232 serial cable and DSL Routers, using PPP and SLIP protocols and an OpenBSD PPP/SLIP gateway. Video capture of my @party 2014 winning compo entry "8088Domination", an official sequel to 8088 Corruption (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1p1im_2uf4) that I made 10 years earlier. Like the former, 8088 Domination displays full-motion color video with audio on a 1981IBM PC with CGA, a Sound Blaster, and any hard drive -- but, unlike the former, Domination uses full graphics mode whereas Corruption used only text mode. This is significant because graphics mode requires 8x more memory and processing, and I had to combine a lot of creative and technical disciplines in order to pull it off.
This video is a capture of 8088 Domination running directly off of my IBM PC 5160; video is the composite CGA output signal, and audio is from a Sound Blaster Pro2.0.

As far as I can tell, the NiCad "blue barrel" battery is original to the multifunction board (circa 1987-1988) and has never been replaced.
I also give an example of how some classic DOS CGA games are *not* compatible with modern VGA video displays and will just show a garbled screen.

Video production and post-productiuon facilities was Dudkowski-Lynch Associates, Inc., Mill Valley, CA

IBM ThinkCentre 8171 Small Form Factor PC
Here's an IBM ThinkCentre I found for free. It needed a hard drive and to a lesser extent, an optical drive, but I managed to get both installed even though removing the front bezel for the optical drive was incredibly difficult and the hard drive needs a proprietary mount.
This machine has a Pentium 4 processor clocked at 3.0GHz, 1GB of DDR RAM and an Intel 915 chipset running the graphics. This machine is also very small and completely toolless, trademarks of being designed for business use.

In 1982, Ed Dudkowski wrote, co-produced and co-directed, with his then-partner Marijane Lynch, a 10-chapter video series teaching users how to use their new IBM PC. They formed a company called Kennen Publishing to market this and two other similar videocassettes for the Apple II and the Apple III.
This first IBM PC video won the VideoReviewMagazine's Viera Award as the best how-to video in 1983, a year after Jane Fonda won the same award for her Workout video. IBMNational Educational Marketing contracted their video production company to create an 8.5-hour Video TrainingSeries for educators that IBM gave away to school systems around the US to teach how the IBM PC could be used in education.
Credits for the original video:
Lauri Goldman: Woman at the keyboard
Jack Hanson: Narration
Richard Favaro: Art direction, set design, lighting & camera
Michael Baird: Editor
Richard Scott: ProducerLinus Maurer and Julia Gennert: GraphicsJaneCase and Steve Greenberg: Computer consultants
Ed Dudkowski was kind enough to post all 10 chapters of the video; all I've done is clean them up, recombine them into the full-length program, and format them for 60p as they would have originally been viewed. (If anyone has the original videotape, I'd like to give it a proper conversion and treatment; please contact me.)

I wasn't personally around when said history happened; this is mostly information I managed to gather on Wikipedia and elsewhere. If you find inaccuracies, tell me and I'll note them down!
Obviously the CM-32L didn't actually have an LCD screen, but that doesn't stop Munt prom providing it (the software part was in the unit, but the actual display wasn't included, in order to cut the price).

M.U.L.E. for the IBM PC - Demonstration
This is an unedited capture of what M.U.L.E. for the IBM PC looks like when played on a composite CGA monitor, where it takes advantage of all 16 colors (as opposed to only 4 colors when run on an RGB monitor). This capture is unedited and starts from when the computer is booted, to the title screen animation and music, to the start of the demo, to the final ending screen.
Since there is no audio after the game starts, I muted the audio after game start to cut down on the noise.
Many thanks to VincentBray for working with a small team of computer software preservationists to get this released into the wild.
If you want to try playing this in DOSBox in Windows, try this experimental patch that has composite CGA support: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=12319&postdays;=0&post;...
Vintage IBM AS/400 PC Scrap for High Value Gold Recovery
This awesome IBM PC scrap turned out to be a very high value scrap for gold recovery.
4 MotorolaCPU's and a heap of good boards loaded with IC Chips.
This VintageIBMAS/400 is from around 1991.
I picked it up from a residential e-waste pick-up.
Watch the end for a view of the awesome circuit boards I pulled.

Interestingly enough, Gravis actually went bankrupt because their UltraSound failed to compete with the SoundBlaster AWE32. So Creative sent not one, but two companies into bankruptcy, and using pretty much the same strategy every time!

If you want to try playing this in DOSBox in Windows, try this experimental patch that has composite CGA support: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=12319&postdays;=0&postorder;=asc&start;=420

About Computer Chronicles:
The Computer Chronicles was an American television series, broadcast during 1981-2002 on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) public television, which documented the rise of the personal computer from its infancy to the immense market at the turn of the 21st century. The series was created in the Fall of 1981, by Stewart Cheifet (later co-host), then the station manager of the College of San Mateo's KCSM-TV (which co-produced the show with Harrisburg, PA's WITF-TV), initially broadcast as a local weekly series. Jim Warren was its founding host for its 1981-1982 season. It aired continuously from 1981 to 2002 with Cheifet co-hosting most of its later seasons. Gary Kildall served as co-host for six years (1983 to 1990) providing insights and commentary on products as well as discussions on the future of the ever-expanding personal computer sphere.

Review from the perspective of a casual collector of video games: is the first "PC", the IBM 5150, worth buying today? A run-down of the history, pros and cons of the system and games, what to look for and be aware of when buying, as well as some of the other 8-bit computers and revisions in the 5150 lineage. MS-DOS has never been so fine.

New Old Stock IBM PC 5150 Boot up test with DOS 1.1
I found this computer in almost new old stock condition at a yard sale. This video is my r...

Video production and post-productiuon facilities was Dudkowski-Lynch Associates, Inc., Mill Valley, CA

with the success of the (high) priced IBM PC and the upcoming cheaper clones IBM introduced 1983/84 the IBM PCjr (junior). It was still expensive and not fully compatible to the IBM PC. The PCjr was not a success at all - it disappeared soon and is nowadays highly wanted by collectors.

[ Don't forget to activate subtitles! ]
At this time, this How-to is only available in french : http://retrocomputing.free.fr/dotclear/index.php?2008/12/22/5-how-to-pour-la-connexion-des-ordinosaures-a-internet
Greetings to the fr.comp.ordinosaures newsgroup community.
My big thanks goes to JohanSanchez for providing me this beautiful computer.

8088 Domination: Video capture from an IBM PC 5160

Technical explanation: http://trixter.oldskool.org/2014/06/19/8088-domination-post-mortem-part-1/
Download the party version at https://www.scene.org/file.php?file=%2Fparties%2F2014%2Fatparty14%2Fdemo_oldschool%2F8088_domination_party_version.zip&fileinfo; if you'd like to run it on your own vintage hardware.

IBM 5155 running PC-DOS 3.30 and some old programs
This is my IBM 5155 from 1984 running on PC-DOS 3.30. It came with two 5.25" floppy drives...
This was a very rushed build in an old IBM Craptiva ATX case from 1999.
Specs: Supermicro X7SLA-H w/Atom 330 1.6GHz
3GB DDR2-533, 250GB HDD, Audigy 2 ZS Gold in PCI slot

The cellular automaton laboratory for 8-bit retro computers is shown in action. Xlife-8 is the port of famous Xlife 32/64-bit program. Xlife-8 is written in the pure assembler (6502, z80, 8088, PDP-11, ...). This demo is made with PCE-IBMPC emulator, byzanz, avconv, mencoder.
I attack the problem of the IBM PC 5150's inflated reserved IO range, and get a 16-bit ISA card working in this 8-bit machine.
This video turned out a bit more dry and theory-heavy than I envisioned, sorry for that. Something more fun in the next couple of weeks though, I promise! :D

Additional notes:
I wasn't personally around when said history happened; this is mostly information I managed to gather on Wikipedia and elsewhere. If you find inaccuracies, tell me and I'll note them down!
Obviously the CM-32L didn't actually have an LCD screen, but that doesn't stop Munt prom providing it (the software part was in the unit, but the actual display wasn't included, in order to cut the price).
Interestingly enough, Gravis actually went bankrupt because their UltraSound failed to compete with the SoundBlaster AWE32. So Creative sent not one, but two companies into bankruptcy, and using pretty much the same strategy every time!

If you want to try playing this in DOSBox in Windows, try this experimental patch that has composite CGA support: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=12319&postdays;=0&postorder;=asc&start;=420
