There's only, estimates suggest that there is about 1600 pandas in the wild, which if you consider the fact that in a small office block there is possibly more than 1600 people there - that's a tiny tiny number." Close up of Tian Tian LEAD-IN: A hairless, pink, blind panda was born just over a year ago in the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC. Now as he finishes celebrating his first birthday, the panda population seems to be levelling off if not rising. According to the World Wildlife Fund, it is time to celebrate, but efforts to preserve the pandas' natural habitat must be increased. STORYLINE: Tai Shan takes his first walkabout for the public. A year ago his mother, Mei Xiang, was artificially inseminated. Tai Shan had to be monitored closely to ensure he would maintain a healthy life. Organisations like the World Wildlife Fund UK (WWF UK) support panda conservation and habitat expansion programmes, rather than breeding programs. In fact the WWF UK claim pandas don't have a breeding problem. Last Sunday (9 July) the Smithsonian National Zoo held a special first birthday celebration for Tai Shan. The young panda had been sent birthday cards from all over the United States. As a treat a special frozen fruit dessert was provided inside his enclosure.
