This video show why US Lockheed U-2 Spy plane need a powerful car traveling at 140-Mph (225 km/h) to help the U2 spy plane landing on the runway and why it can crash without this precious help.
Because of the tender specifications which required a very light plane, the engineer have designed only 2 very primitive landing gear which makes the U2 really unstable during the take off and the landing.
The Lockheed U-2, nicknamed "Dragon Lady", is a high altitude surveillance aircraft , it have only one powerful jet engine. This spy plane is used by the United States Air Force (USAF) and previously by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). It make monitoring missions during day or night and can reach an altitudes above 70,000 feet (21,000 m) . This plane also does research work and development of electronic sensors, calibration of satellites and satellite data validation.
In the early 1950s, with the tensions of the Cold War rise, the US military needed to improve the strategic reconnaissance to determine the capabilities and intentions of the Soviet Union . Surveillance aircraft of that time were mainly bombers converted, but were vulnerable to flak and fighters. It was thought that a plane flew over 21,000 m (70,000 feet) not only be out of reach of missiles and Soviet fighters, but also away from the radar . This capability would allow overflight missions, intentionally violating the airspace of a country for photography a specific area.

If the rumors about a wooden structure of the wing, Denis Jenkins in WarbirdTech Volume 16, mentions a monocoque aluminum for the fuselage for the wing spars 3 and a lattice of aluminum. Similarly, Bernard Millot in Docavia 29 on Lockheed, evokes an all-metal construction. The landing and take-off of this plane were very difficult: in fact, the Lockheed U-2 has a front and a rear axle tandem (unlike other planes that trains and two rear nosewheel), which are added casters stabilizing the ends of the two wings. These wheels are dropped at takeoff, reducing the aircraft but making landing more difficult and requires that ground staff intervene at every landing.

Top Documentary Films: The History of Spy Planes
The original U-2 first appeared in the 1960's when Francis Gary Powers was shot down in May 1960 over Russia. Further appearances where made throughout the Vietnam War and the TR-1 version known as the "Dragon Lady" was used for battlefield surveillance during the 1980's. The TR-1 was designed to monitor international arms agreements and potential enemy forces around the world for the United States government. The wing pods, detachable nose cone, and fuselage carry the radar, photographic, and electronic sensors used by the U-2R. The original U2 aircraft was designed by the famous skunk work designer Clarence L. Johnson and first flew in 1955. The first U-2R which was an enlarged version of the original U-2 first flew in 1967 and although the aircraft design is over 50 years old, only a few other aircraft have flown higher.
The distinctive black paint and gentle manoeuvres of the U-2 gave it the famous nickname "Dragon Lady". The huge wings allow the U-2 to fly to extreme altitudes and extensive distances, but this also makes its wings very fragile and the pilot has to be very careful not to overstress them. The aircraft paint contains iron which significantly reduces the spy planes radar signature. The U-2 has been described as a giant jet powered glider and like a glider it is very efficient in the sky, but it is also a very difficult aircraft to land. The landing procedure involves a second aircraft flying behind the U-2 and providing constant updates on the approach to assist the pilot. The cramp cockpit and bicycle type landing gear add to the challenge of landing the aircraft safely. Once landed the wing tips topple over and slide on specially designed skids. When the aircraft comes to a stop ground crews attach the pogo wheels to allow the U-2 to taxi.
The modern day U-2R has been updated with state of the art reconnaissance equipment and microchip flight technology. The pilot wears an astronaut style pressure suit and the aircraft can loiter for hours at altitudes higher than most aircraft can fly. To remain as unseen as possible the pilot has a mirror in the cockpit that allows them to see if the aircraft is creating contrails and adjust the speed or altitude to eliminate it. Originally powered by two Pratt and Whitney J75 engines the U-2R was given new General Electric F101 engines similar to the B-2 Stealth's engines and renamed the U-2S. The Q-Bay which houses all the high powered cameras is located directly behind the cockpit and the bottom bay door contains glass windows to facilitate the camera lenses. The Cockpit is fully pressurized, but at the altitudes that the U-2 pilots fly a depressurisation would kill the pilot almost immediately so a suit similar to a NASA astronaut is wore for emergencies. NASA operates two ER-2 airframes for high altitude research into the ozone layer and for studying the earth's crust. The U-2 is truly a remarkable aircraft and continues to play a key role in environmental research and for reconnaissance missions for the US Armed Forces.

The support car does a FOD check of the runway and communicates with the pilot when the aircraft has been prepared by the ground crew for take-off. The ground crew can be seen removing the securing pins that hold the wing stabilising wheels as well as other last minute checks. you can see the stabilising wheels under each wing fall away as the aircraft rotates and the ground crew retrieving these from the runway. Note also the efficiency of the aircrafts elongated wings that enable it to do a very short take-off run and a very steep climb out through the cloud base.

A United States Air Force Lockheed U-2S 'Dragon Lady', serial 80-1076, callsign 'Dragon 21', departing from RAF Fairford, England for Beale air Force base USA.

For 60 years the U-2 has been flying high (70,000 feet to be exact). Here's a look at some of the interesting facts about the U-2 and what makes it so unique. This clip contains images protected by US copyrights.
After World War II, the U.S. military desired better strategic aerial reconnaissance to help determine Soviet capabilities and intentions. Into the 1950s, the best intelligence the American government had on the interior of the Soviet Union were German Luftwaffe photographs taken during the war of territory west of the Ural Mountains, so overflights to take aerial photographs of the Soviet Union began. After 1950, Soviet air defenses aggressively attacked all aircraft near its borders—sometimes even those over Japanese airspace—and the existing reconnaissance aircraft, primarily bombers converted for reconnaissance duty such as the Boeing RB-47, were vulnerable to anti-aircraft artillery, missiles, and fighters. Richard Leghorn of the USAF suggested that an aircraft that could fly at 60,000 feet (18,300 m) should be safe from the MiG-17, the Soviet Union's best interceptor, which could barely reach 45,000 feet (13,700 m). He and others believed that Soviet radar, which used American equipment provided during the war, could not track aircraft above 65,000 feet.[2]
The highest-flying aircraft available to America and its allies at the time was the English Electric Canberra, which could reach 48,000 feet (14,600 m). The British had already produced the PR3 photo-reconnaissance variant, but the USAF asked for English Electric's help to further modify the Martin B-57—the American licensed version of the Canberra—with long, narrow wings, new engines, and a lighter-than-normal airframe to reach 67,000 feet (20,400 m). Air Research and Development Command mandated design changes that made the aircraft more durable for combat, but the resulting RB-57D aircraft of 1955 could only reach 64,000 feet. The Soviet Union, unlike the United States and Britain, had also improved radar technology after the war, and could track aircraft above 65,000 feet.[3]

The Lockheed U-2, nicknamed "Dragon Lady", is a single-jet engine, ultra-high altitude reconnaissance aircraft operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) and previously flown by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). It provides day and night, very high-altitude (70,000 feet; 21,000 m), all-weather intelligence gathering. The U-2 has also been used for electronic sensor research, satellite calibration, and communications purposes.
The U-2's flight controls are designed for high-altitude flight; the controls require light control inputs at operational altitude. However, at lower altitudes, the higher air density and lack of a power assisted control system makes the aircraft very difficult to fly. Control inputs must be extreme to achieve the desired response, and a great deal of physical strength is needed to operate the controls in this manner. The U-2 is very sensitive to crosswinds, which, together with its tendency to float over the runway, makes the aircraft notoriously difficult to land. As it approaches the runway, the cushion of air provided by the high-lift wings in ground effect is so pronounced that the U-2 will not land unless the wing is fully stalled. A landing U-2 is accompanied on the ground by a chase car and an assisting U-2 pilot calling off the angles and decreasing aircraft height as the aircraft descends. Chase cars have included Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaro SSs, Pontiac GTOs, Pontiac G8 GTs, and Dodge Chargers.

Lockheed Martin has recently revealed its proposal for the TR-X, a tactical reconnaissance spy plane that would potentially replace the U.S Air Force’s decades-old U-2 craft.
Lockheed Martin has recently revealed a potential replacement for the U.S. Air Force’s U-2 spy plane called the TR-X.
The new craft will likely look similar to the U-2 and will retain the 70,000 feet flying capability but will be designed to better support advanced communications, sensors, and warfare-related systems.
It will also be optionally manned, with an emphasis on cost-efficient tactical reconnaissance which is what the TR stands for.
According to Lockheed, the TR-X has been conceived specifically for the Air Force, though a representative with the military branch reports that they have not yet heard a formal proposal.
He also cautions that the Air Force currently lacks the resources to invest in another reconnaissance aircraft since it already has the U-2 and the Global Hawk made by competitor Northrop Grumman.
That said, the U-2, which has been in service since before the 60s, will reportedly be phased out beginning in 2018, and the first TR-X planes would be available by 2025.
wn.com/Potential Successor To U 2 Spy Plane Revealed

The Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft.[1] It was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft in the 1960s by Lockheed and its Skunk Works division. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. During reconnaissance missions, the SR-71 operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace threats. If a surface-to-air missile launch was detected, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate and outfly the missile.[2]
The SR-71 served with the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1998. A total of 32 aircraft were built; 12 were lost in accidents, but none lost to enemy action.[3][4] The SR-71 has been given several nicknames, including Blackbird and Habu.[5] Since 1976, it has held the world record for the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft, a record previously held by the YF-12.

Training film for USAF maintenance technicians on the Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojet engine. The J57 was the first jet engine to produce 10,000 pounds of thrust, and was used on many aircraft including the Boeing B-52, KC-135 and 707, the North American F-100 Super Sabre, the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo, the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger, the Martin B-57 Canberra, the Vought F-8 Crusader, the Lockheed U-2, and the Douglas A3D, F4D, and F5D.
United States Air Force Training film TF-5628
There is a broadband hum in the vocal frequencies of this film which I cannot completely remove.
Public domain film from the US Air Force, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

The Pratt & Whitney J57 (company designation: JT3C) was an axial-flow turbojet engine developed by Pratt & Whitney in the early 1950s. The J57 was the first 10,000 lbf (45 kN) thrust class engine in the United States. The J57/JT3C was developed into the J75/JT4A turbojet, JT3D/TF33 turbofan and the PT5/T57 turboprop.
Design and development
The J57 was a development of the XT45 (PT4) turboprop engine intended for the XB-52. As the B-52 power requirements grew, the design evolved into a turbojet, the JT3. The prestigious Collier Trophy for 1952 was awarded to Leonard S. Hobbs, Chief Engineer of United Aircraft Corporation, for "designing and producing the P&W; J57 turbojet engine". On May 25, 1953, a J57-powered YF-100A exceeded Mach 1 on its maiden flight. The engine was produced from 1951 to 1965 with a total of 21,170 built.

Immediately after World War II, long range aerial reconnaissance was taken up by adapted jet bombers – such as the English Electric Canberra, and its American development, the Martin B-57 – capable of flying higher or faster than the enemy. After the Korean War, RB-47 aircraft were used. These were at first converted B-47 jet bombers, but later these were purposely built RB-47 reconnaissance planes. They did not carry any bombs. They had large cameras mounted in the belly of the plane, and with a truncated bomb bay used for carrying photo-flash bombs.
The onset of the Cold War led the development of highly specialized and secretive strategic reconnaissance aircraft, or spy planes, such as the Lockheed U-2 and its successor, the SR-71 Blackbird (both from the United States). Flying these aircraft became an exceptionally demanding task, as much because of the aircraft's extreme speed and altitude as it was because of the risk of being captured as spies. As a result, the crews of these aircraft were invariably specially selected and trained.
There are claims that the US constructed a hypersonic reconnaissance aircraft, dubbed the Aurora, in the late 1980s to replace the Blackbird.
Since the early 1960s, in the United States aerial and satellite reconnaissance has been coordinated by the National Reconnaissance Office.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerial_reconnaissance
Between 1946 and 1960, the United States Army Air Forces conducted aerial reconnaissance flights over the Soviet Union in order to determine the size, composition, and disposition of Soviet forces. Aircraft used included the Boeing B-47 Stratojet bomber and, from 1956, the Lockheed U-2 plane specifically designed for high-altitude reconnaissance. The program was ended following the U-2 incident of 1960.
Reconnaissance flights began in 1946 along the borders of the Soviet Union and other Socialist Bloc states. The necessity of peacetime overflights was reinforced after the escalation of the Cold War in the late 1940s and, in particular, after the Korea War started in 1950. US President Harry S. Truman authorized selected overflights of the Soviet Union in order to determine the status of its air forces. It was feared that the Soviets might launch a surprise aerial attack on the United States with long-range bombers.
Following the 1960 U-2 incident, Eisenhower ordered an end to American reconnaissance flights into the USSR. This policy was upheld by President Kennedy, who in 25 January 1961 told a press conference, "I have ordered that the flights not be resumed, which is a continuation of the order given by President Eisenhower in May of last year".[3] In 1964 CIA head John A. McCone emphasized to the Johnson administration the orders were not a pledge barring further flights, but simply a directive that the flights not be resumed, one which can be countermanded.[3] As there was no strategic situation requiring photography, Johnson elected to continue the policy. This was further reinforced by the rise in satellite reconnaissance.
In spite of the formal end to reconnaissance efforts, Project Dark Gene, a CIA-Iranian program of intrusions into Soviet airspace to explore Soviet air defence systems, continued up to 1979. The US also remained involved in reconnaissance of mainland China into the 1970s using Taiwan U-2 overflights.
More than 40 US aircraft were downed by Soviet forces and about 200 US servicemen were killed. Their families were given misinformation by the US military about how they died.

The United States Air Force facility commonly known as Area 51 is a remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base, within the Nevada Test and Training Range. According to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the correct names for the facility are Homey Airport (ICAO: KXTA) and Groom Lake,[2][3] though the name Area 51 was used in a CIA document from the Vietnam War.[4] Other names used for the facility include Dreamland,[5] and nicknames Paradise Ranch,[6] Home Base and Watertown.[7] The special use airspace around the field is referred to as a Restricted Area 4808 North (R-4808N).[8]
The base's current primary purpose is publicly unknown; however, based on historical evidence, it most likely supports development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems.[9] The intense secrecy surrounding the base has made it the frequent subject of conspiracy theories and a central component to unidentified flying object (UFO) folklore.[10][11] Although the base has never been declared a secret base, all research and occurrings in Area 51 are Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI).[10] In July 2013, following a FOIA request filed in 2005, the CIA publicly acknowledged the existence of the base for the first time, declassifying documents detailing the history and purpose of Area 51.[12]
Area 51 is located in the southern portion of Nevada in the western United States, 83 miles (134 km) north-northwest of Las Vegas. Situated at its center, on the southern shore of Groom Lake, is a large military airfield. The site was acquired by the United States Air Force in 1955, primarily for the testing of the Lockheed U-2 aircraft.[12] The area around Area 51, including the small town of Rachel on the aptly named "Extraterrestrial Highway", is a popular tourist destination.
Its secretive nature and undoubted connection to classified aircraft research, together with reports of unusual phenomena, have led Area 51 to become a focus of modern UFO and conspiracy theories. Some of the activities mentioned in such theories at Area 51 include:
The storage, examination, and reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft (including material supposedly recovered at Roswell), the study of their occupants (living and dead), and the manufacture of aircraft based on alien technology.
Meetings or joint undertakings with extraterrestrials.
The development of exotic energy weapons for the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) or other weapons programs.
The development of means of weather control.
The development of time travel and teleportation technology.
The development of unusual and exotic propulsion systems related to the Aurora Program.
Activities related to a supposed shadowy one world government or the Majestic 12 organization.
Many of the hypotheses concern underground facilities at Groom or at Papoose Lake (also known as "S-4 location"), 8.5 miles (13.7 km) south, and include claims of a transcontinental underground railroad system, a disappearing airstrip (nicknamed the "Cheshire Airstrip", after Lewis Carroll's Cheshire cat) which briefly appears when water is sprayed onto its camouflaged asphalt,[58] and engineering based on alien technology. Publicly available satellite imagery, however, reveals clearly visible landing strips at Groom Dry Lake, but not at Papoose Lake.
In the mid-1950s, civilian aircraft flew under 20,000 feet while military aircraft flew under 40,000 feet. Once the U-2 began flying at above 60,000 feet, an unexpected side effect was an increasing number of UFO sighting reports. Sightings occurred most often during early evenings hours, when airline pilots flying west saw the U-2's silver wings reflect the setting sun, giving the aircraft a "fiery" appearance. Many sighting reports came to the Air Force's Project Blue Book, which investigated UFO sightings, through air-traffic controllers and letters to the government. The project checked U-2 and later OXCART flight records to eliminate the majority of UFO reports it received during the late 1950s and 1960s, although it could not reveal to the letter writers the truth behind what they saw.

Don Phillips + Steven Greer - "Top Secret Technology from Extraterrestrials"
Don Phillips, Contractor, USAF, CIA, Lockheed Skunkworks
Don Phillips was in the Air Force at Las Vegas Air Force Base during an event when UFOs were seen moving at enormous speeds near Mt. Charleston, northwest of Las Vegas.
In addition, he worked with Kelly Johnson at the Lockheed Skunkworks — on design and construction of the U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird.
He testifies that we not only have these extraterrestrial devices, but have also achieved tremendous technological advances from their study.
He states that in the 1950's and 1960's, NATO did research into the origin of ET races, and disseminated reports to the leaders of various countries.
He lists a few of the technologies we were able to develop because of ETs:
computer chips
lasers
night vision
bulletproof vests
Mr. Phillips now develops technologies that can help eliminate environmental pollutants and reduce the need for fossil fuels.
