Summary by SPage (WMF)

Flow doesn't support markdown, it supports the same wikitext as article pages (and WYSIWYG editing using a subset of VisualEditor). Also, please use Talk:Sandbox to test Flow.

The MediaWiki.org main page needs a redesign. It needs to be user friendly more information about information quicker to download things and easer to find older mediawiki releases ( for testing ). It would be greate if the main page look a bit like translatewiki.net which makes the page look different because it isent using vector as its default skin for main page.

Task filed at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T108486

Luis Felipe Schenone (talkcontribs)

I agree, the main page looks archaic. Some rounded borders would be nice, and that disgusting download button needs to go. However these are just details, a proper redesign should start at a higher level. Should we change the elements of the main page, or just the look?

Florianschmidtwelzow (talkcontribs)

I'm not sure, if rounded boxes is a good idea, in my opinion it looks like an old design, too. The button could be changed to a mediawiki.ui button (progressive I think). That would make it a bit better, I think. Opinions?

Paladox2017 (talkcontribs)

+1 on mediawiki.ui or what about OOUI

Florianschmidtwelzow (talkcontribs)

There is currently no way to use OOUI in wikitext. If we would use InputBox for this button, we would switch to OOUI just in the moment, when InputBox switches to it. But InputBox doesn't have a simple button iirc.

Luis Felipe Schenone (talkcontribs)

Regarding the download button, I think that using a mediawiki.ui button would be great.

I would also add that there is no need to link to the release notes of the latest version, much less of the previous one, in the main page. They can be easily accessed from the Download page (to which the download button links). This would leave only the download button in the "Current version" section, which would make the section unnecessary. I'd move the button somewhere else, maybe to the right of the welcome message, and get rid of the "Current version" section entirely, which would make room for the News and Opportunities sections, or allow us to insert some other content. Anyone agrees?

Paladox2017 (talkcontribs)

Well the look and elements it needs to describe more on where to download skin and extensions. probably recommended ones.

It needs a refresh look with more info.

91.65.247.53 (talkcontribs)

There was already an effort to add fluff to the Main Page which looks rather cool. Only this ridiculous photo at the top should imho be removed. Why not go for this?

Luis Felipe Schenone (talkcontribs)

I think that design looks awesome, or at least much superior to the current one. We should implement it immediately, but why wasn't it implemented already, if it's already developed?

Paladox2017 (talkcontribs)

Well not really as this is a community wiki they want people to vote for it. just like the English Wikipedia they had some pretty greate desgn in 2012 but none were picked. We would need to get a hold on one of the admins on here and ask but what about something that has a desgn like http://codepen.io/awesomephant/full/DxIBo

91.65.247.53 (talkcontribs)

Sorry folk, but it seems impossible to add links to Flow, that really bad. Well, this post too since it is off topic.

Florianschmidtwelzow (talkcontribs)

Fixed ;) You can switch to wikitext mode and use the "normal" wikitext syntax for internal links.

91.65.247.53 (talkcontribs)

I cannot even change my post to remove typos. Now I am really pi...d. You know what ... I am out of this discussion.

Paladox2017 (talkcontribs)

This desgn http://codepen.io/awesomephant/full/DxIBo looks really good. Maybe we should create a bug for mediawiki to have footer redesign to look like http://codepen.io/awesomephant/full/DxIBo even if there is an option to even use old footer or the new one.

Florianschmidtwelzow (talkcontribs)

@Paladox2017: This design get's a -1 from me. The new design of our main page shouldn't loose the identity of MediaWiki.org (or, to be specific, Vector). So it should look very nice, but with Vector. The design preview mentioned by 91.65.247.53 looks awesome! There is a task for it in phabricator: task T653.

Paladox2017 (talkcontribs)

I wasn't suggesting using all the code from there just some I suggest we redesign the header maybe a big Text with words Welcome to Mediawiki. with maybe the iconic logo on the sides of it with a colourful background.

Paladox2017 (talkcontribs)

What about something like this https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Paladox2017/MediaWiki/Redesgn for a header for mediawiki. Please feel free to edit if you have improvements to it or have an alternative desgn for it.

Infobox is not displayed, template link shows instead; Chinese Localization problem

2
Iampkuhz (talkcontribs)

I want to build a local Chinese Wikipedia database recently. However, I came up with 2 questions.

Infobox not display

After enable Extension:Scribunto, some infoboxes are not in correct format, such as NBA player Yao ming's page Yao_ming_page1.png. All the page content are included inside infobox.

yao_ming.png

Then I found that if I change the value of $wgLanguageCode from zh-cn to en , it show a little bit more formated yao_ming_page2.png. however, it can't parse infobox template as https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/姚明 shows. It can't parse 'redirect template‘ (just show the template links).

By the way, I have import redirect.sql, templatelinks.sql and other dump files from https://dumps.wikimedia.org/zhwiki/20150602 .

Chinese localization chars not parsed

As shown in yao_ming_page2.png, there are wikitext like -{zh;zh-hans;zh-hant|本条目類似愛好者網頁。}- . How can I fix this?

Could anyone provide some advise or run into the same problem before?

Thanks a lot

I want to add some pre-made questions, were user just have to fill a box , make a click, and obtain the answer.

In order to do this i used semantic forms+templates, so that if for example i want to ask "Which are the contributions of a particular user (articles, links, extensions.... basically all in were user is tagged, can be accessed in a organized way just by putting his name in a box and clicking.

For this i converted the "preview" button, in something which takes the value of the box and launches the inline query (#ask) from the template without saving it as a page, obviously.

Problem is that upwards i get this message telling me that "this is a previsualization message....." which i want to get rid of.

Any way to do this? If possible, only in some particular pages, otherwhise, totally rid of.

LocalSettings.php not readable. Please correct file permissions and try again.

MichaelZ70 (talkcontribs)

I am running Mediawiki on a windows 2008 Server and sometime I receive the following error messageː

LocalSettings.php not readable. Please correct file permissions and try again.

After a reload of the page the message disappears and the page is loaded correctly. It appear not at special Wiki page and I haven't found when exactly the error message is displayed.

Anyone have an idea why it appears and how I can fix this problem.

Thank you in advance

Michael

i've got the same problem, did you solved?

88.130.122.103 (talkcontribs)

Hard to believe that the permissions should suddenly be incorrect. I guess that what the error message tells you might not even be your problem.

Do you maybe have a race condition? The file is tried to be accessed by multiple processes at the same time. For the second one this fails and might give you this error?

Can anybody think of a reason why HTTPS links would not be rendered as links? All instances of HTTPS links across my entire wiki (including pages in the Special namespace [i.e. Special:Version]) are rendered as if surrounded by <nowiki> tags.

Ex.)

    HTTP renders properly
    FTP renders properly
[https://test HTTPS renders exactly like this]

Add this to your LocalSettings.php:

$wgUrlProtocols[] = 'https';
132.3.45.83 (talkcontribs)

I've added the line -- no change.

I was under the impression that HTTPS was a supported URL protocol by default.

Any other ideas?

I'm having a problem when searching for a page to translate (Template:Main page/sitelink5/pt-br). The current search engine (Cirrus) does not offer the option to create non-existent pages. Can anyone help me?

Kaganer (talkcontribs)

Direct link for you ;) In my opinion, MainPage should be migrate into new translation system (through Translate Extension).

Fabsouza1 (talkcontribs)

Yes, I think so. This would greatly facilitate the work of translation.

fwiw we have a good chance to come up with a sane approach for localization of the homepage as part of MediaWiki/Homepage_redesign.

The section Current version states that version 1.21.5 was published on 14th November 2013, but the News section states that it was released on 28th January 2014. Maybe someone could correct it.

Qgil-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thank you, it is fixed now.
