Young Sable Antelope bulls fighting

Young Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger) bulls practice fighting in Welgevonden Game Reserve. Full grown Sable bulls reach a shoulder height of 120cm to 140cm and weigh in at between 220kg and 270kg. They are formidable fighters and can easily do serious damage to predators. A bull uses urination and defecation scent markings along his territory’s perimeter to drive his rivals off. In the wild male offspring are driven out of female herds once they reach an age of about three to four years. The rejected male offspring join bachelor herds where they continue to mature and practice their fighting skills. When males in the reach bachelor herd reach an age of five to six, they will leave the head and establish their own territory. These bulls aim to secure territory that has good grazing and water sources so as to attract the best females to their herd. Should a rival male enter another bulls territory, the dominant bull will attempt to physically drive the intruder off his turf.
