I took some video of the fascinating long snouted Visayan Warty Pig at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Description from the Pittsburgh Zoo: Visayan warty pigs are big talkers. They snort, grunt, squeak, and chirrup to communicate with one another. Location & Habitat Originally, warty pigs inhabited all six of the Visayan Islands in the Philippines. Today, they are extinct on all but two of these islands. Family Structure Visayan warty pigs are very social. They live in groups called sounders made up of females, their young, and an adult male. The pigs are not territorial and many sounders' homes overlap. Diet Wild swine are omnivorous, which means that they eat plants and animals. Fruits, roots, tubers, and worms are favorite snacks. Conservation Though Visayan warty pigs are protected by Philippine law, the law is not well enforced. The Visayan Warty Pig Conservation Programme (VWPCP) was established to help. The VWPCP researches and breeds the pigs, and teaches local people about protecting them. Did You Know? Piglets are born with orange and black stripes along their backs. After a year, the stripes disappear and the fur becomes solid gray.
