Oklahoma F-4 tornado: May 8, 2003

During the afternoon hours of May 8, 2003, an isolated supercell thunderstorm erupted in a highly volatile atmospheric environment over central Oklahoma. The storm went on to produce a long-track F-4 (Fujita scale) tornado, which began on the western side of the city of Moore, and continued northeast for 17 miles. Parts of eastern Oklahoma City, Midwest City, and Choctaw were in the tornado's path, before it dissipated near the town of Harrah. The storm reached perhaps its maximum intensity and width--around 700 yards--as it heavily damaged a large General Motors facility near Sooner Road and I-240, near Tinker Air Force Base. Amazingly, there were no fatalities associated with this tornado, despite at least 45 known injuries. This event was part of a well-forecast High Risk severe weather outbreak over parts of the central and southern Great Plains. It was also the second time in just over four years that the city of Moore had been hit by a highly destructive tornado, as parts of the city were leveled by an F-5 tornado on May 3, 1999.
