On the Beach (2000)

Well, the world has finally managed to blow itself up. Only Australia has been spared from nuclear destruction and a gigantic wave of radiation is floating in on the breezes. Only two months are left. One American sub located in the Pacific has survived and is met with disdain by the Australians when it arrives. All of the calculations of Australia's most renowned scientist says the country is at doomsday - get ready. However, one of his rivals say that is incorrect. He believes that a 1000 people can be relocated into the northern hemisphere, where his assumptions indicate the radiation levels may be lower. The American Captain is asked to take a mission to the north to determine which scientist is right (and along the way check out the devastation in Alaska and California - seemingly all bodies and vehicles were disintegrated). However, before the mission, all kinds of bland soap opera relationships are played out. Brown and his ex-fiancée battle it out in a love-hate relationship. Meanwhile she also takes a liking to Assante, who is divided in his loyalties to his men and his love for his now-dead wife and children.

Harry Truman, the successor to the Oval Office after the late President Rosevelt, is plagued with the decisions of war that could save or cost a thousand lives. He is then confronted with the nuclear weapons project, which he approves. As tension ensues (although it is difficult to get into this because most know the end) Truman must make the devastating desicion to use the bomb of all bombs. After some delivering japanese performances, Truman must force suffering on the japanese people again in order to end the war.

Donald Trump on Sunday finally began revealing some specific policy ideas, sharing a handful of proposals on everything from ISIS to immigration. During a wide-ranging 60-minute interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," the resurgent 2016 candidate largely ditched the bombastic style that catapulted him into first place in the race for the GOP nomination, and instead focused on sharing how he would fight terrorism, deport illegal immigrants and nominate Supreme Court justices. On immigration, the outspoken mogul insisted that he didn't want to break up families — but would only avoid doing so by deporting children along with their parents. "We have to keep the families together, but they have to go," Trump said. "We either have a country or we don't have a country." When asked about people who have "no place to go," Trump said he would "work with them" but that "they have to go." Trump also followed up on a long-ago-made promise to begin sharing position papers that formally explain his ideas, posting one such essay on immigration reform to his campaign website Sunday morning. In the paper, Trump reiterated his previously shared ideas to build a wall along the southern U.S. border for which Mexico would have to pay. He also said that the nation should triple the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents working on the border, should seize remittances that are sent back to Mexico and should raise fees on visas for Mexican executives who come to the U.S. On foreign policy, Trump further explained his idea that the U.S. can better fight ISIS by wrestling away control of oil fields. "I want to take away their wealth. And, as you know, for years I've been saying, 'Don't go into Iraq.' They went into Iraq. They destabilized the Middle East. It was a big mistake. Okay, now we're there," he said. "You take away their wealth, you go and knock the hell out of the oil, take back the oil. We take over the oil, which we should have done in the first place When told by host Chuck Todd that such an effort would likely require tens of thousands of ground troops, Trump replied: "That's okay," explaining that he would use some of the money from the newly seized oil to "take care of the soldiers." Trump also offered his opinion on America's relationship with Saudi Arabia, blasting the Middle Eastern nation's oil-based power and suggesting that it should be paying the U.S. for all the support it receives. "Saudi Arabia makes a billion dollars a day … If it weren't for us, they wouldn't be there. They wouldn't exist," Trump said. "They should pay us." Trump, however, said he would let the controversial Iran nuclear deal negotiated by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry stand — but pledged he would "police it" and look for loopholes he could exploit. "I've taken over some bad contracts. I buy contracts where people screwed up and they have bad contracts," he explained. "But I'm really good at looking at a contract and finding things within a contract that even if they're bad. I would police that contract so tough that they don't have a chance. As bad as the contract is, I will be so tough on that contract. "It's very hard to say, 'We're ripping up,'" he added. But when pressed for names of military figures he relies on for regularly for such policy issues, Trump said he simply watches television. "Well, I watch the shows," he said after being asked who he "talks to for military advice." "I really see a lot of great, you know, when you watch your show and all of the other shows and you have the generals." "I mean, I like (former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. under President George W. Bush John) Bolton. I think he's a tough cookie. And (retired U.S. Army Col. Campaign works to move attention from email issues \As Brian Fallon, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s press secretary, defended her on Wednesday during a conference call about her email use, he made a novel argument that got lost in the haze of questions. Mr. Fallon spoke to reporters after Fox News had reported that two of Mrs. Clinton’s aides while she was secretary of state had sent her classified information over her private email server. Mr. Fallon insisted that the report constituted a “watershed” moment that helped identify which emails an inspector general had flagged as containing classified information. That’s because, he argued, the definition of what is classified is subjective, and the emails weren’t marked as classified at the time they were sent. The inspector general referred to four classified emails in a letter to the F.B.I. about the security of Mrs. Clinton’s server. Then Mr. Fallon tried to turn the theoretical tables on Representative Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, the chairman of the House select committee investigating the Benghazi attacks, which has focused in recent months on Mrs. Clinton’s email use. If she was at fault for having classified information on her server without her knowledge, Mr. Fallon suggested, then aren’t other people in the same boat? “Just as an aside, for the I.G. to now declare the material as classified, since it was provided by State to the House Benghazi committee earlier this year in unredacted form, presumably that means that members of the House Benghazi committee may have unwittingly handled classified material on unclassified systems within the House of Representatives,” Mr. Fallon said. “Now, I don’t think that anybody here at the Clinton campaign is going to say that members of, say, Chairman Gowdy’s staff should have their computers confiscated for having possibly trafficked in classified material,” he said. “I don’t think we would say that. But that is, fundamentally, the same logic behind the I.G.’s referral to the State Department with respect to Mrs. Clinton’s server, since she was at worst a passive recipient of unwitting information that subsequently became deemed as classified. Let’s raise that as an aside.” On Thursday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the House committee said that “The Committee has taken a year to complete all of the complex procedures required by the Executive Branch for review and certification of its systems to manage and handle classified information in electronic form. Despite the substantial complication and inconvenience to complete all of the necessary requirements, the most important thing was to make sure we did it right.” A spokesman for the Democrats on the committee, who make up the minority, said in an email that the documents the committee received were not marked classified, adding, “Like Secretary Clinton, Committee members and staff could not have known to treat the documents as classified when we received them, because it was not marked or easily identifiable as classified information.” When the State Department changed one document to classified, he said, the committee moved it to a new system.

For almost 200 years this 'principle' has guided US policy, being re-asserted by the entire US establishment, including presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan. Interestingly, Kerry mouthed a formal renunciation of the Monroe doctrine at the OAS in 2013, but it is absolutely clear from his speech, and from the ongoing actions of the US, throughout the Americas, that this was just a piece of 'soft power' window dressing, and that the USA has not changed its desire to enforce its status as regional (and indeed world) hegemon. As proof of this we need look no further than Venezuela, which is being subject to a relentless series of attacks designed to destabilise the progressive government. These economic attacks include, inter alia, hoarding of consumer goods to cause shortages and price rises; criminal racketeering to buy up subsidised goods and export them for sale in neighbouring countries (particularly Columbia); paramilitary incursions (particularly from Columbia) into Venezuelan territory; and a program of US led and enforced sanctions upon the progressive leadership of Venezuela, that may well escalate into a full US economic embargo (Blockade) of Venezuela. All this comes at a time when falling oil prices - also due to US manipulation of oil producing nations, encouraging overproduction and low prices - are also hitting Venezuela's income hard. The Venezuelan government led by President Maduro and the PSV are taking determined measures to counter the US attacks, and are confident they will secure victory and the breathing space to improve the lives of their people still further. Helena points to many of the institutions founded by Chavez, such as the Bolivarian Bank, Petrocaribe and ALBA which have a stabilising regional influence and that remain his egalitarian legacy, making Latin America very different place today. However while a wealth compradore elite continues to act in concert with the US, as the 'enemy within' Venezuela, the entire model of the Bolivarian revolution bears within itself the seeds of possible defeat. We wish the Venezuelan people well in securing a path to securing and consolidating the people's ownership of all their sources of natural and industrial wealth. The White House Press Secretary is a senior White House official whose primary responsibility is to act as spokesperson for the United States government administration, especially with regard to the President, senior executives, and policies. The Press Secretary is responsible for collecting information about actions and events within the president's administration and issues the administration's reactions to developments around the world. The Press Secretary interacts with the media, and deals with the White House press corps on a daily basis, generally in a daily press briefing. The Press Secretary serves by the appointment of and at the pleasure of the President; the office does not require the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate, though because of the frequent briefings given to the media, who in turn inform the public, the position is still a very prominent non-Cabinet post. The Press Secretary is responsible for collecting information about actions and events within the president's administration and around the world, and interacting with the media, generally in a daily press briefing. The information includes items such as a summary of the President's schedule for the day, whom the president has seen, or had communication and the official position of the administration on the news of the day. The Press Secretary traditionally also fields questions from the White House press corps in briefings and press conferences, which are generally televised, and "press gaggles", which are on-the-record briefings without video recording, although transcripts are usually made available. The position has often been filled by individuals from news media backgrounds: Roosevelt administration – Stephen Early, a reporter for United Press International and correspondent for The Associated Press.[46] Truman administration – Jonathan W. Daniels, a newspaper man who was in the Franklin Roosevelt administration in multiple agencies and on various boards just prior to becoming Press Secretary;[47] Charlie Ross, a journalist who received the Pulitzer Prize in 1932;[48] Early; Joseph Short, a newspaper man;[49] and Roger Tubby, a reporter and editor turned Democratic National Committee spokesman before becoming White House Press Secretary[50] Eisenhower administration – James C. Hagerty, a reporter for the New York Times[51] Kennedy administration – Pierre Salinger, a reporter and editor for the San Francisco Chronicle[52] Johnson administration – appointed George Christian, a reporter for International News Service[53] and PBS Commentator Bill Moyers[54] Ford administration – appointed Jerald terHorst, a newspaper veteran;[55] and Ron Nessen, an NBC News correspondent[56] Reagan administration – Larry Speakes, a newspaper man;[57] and Marlin Fitzwater, a newspaper man[58] George H.
