Human rights are commonly understood as "inalienable fundamental rights to which a person is inherently entitled simply because she or he is a human being." Human rights are thus conceived as universal (applicable everywhere) and egalitarian (the same for everyone). These rights may exist as natural rights or as legal rights, in both national and international law. The doctrine of human rights in international practice, within international law, global and regional institutions, in the policies of states and in the activities of non-governmental organizations, has been a cornerstone of public policy around the world. The idea of human rights states, "if the public discourse of peacetime global society can be said to have a common moral language, it is that of human rights." Despite this, the strong claims made by the doctrine of human rights continue to provoke considerable skepticism and debates about the content, nature and justifications of human rights to this day. Indeed, the question of what is meant by a "right" is itself controversial and the subject of continued philosophical debate.
The George SorosOpen Society Foundation is the primary donor of the Human Rights Watch, contributing $100 Million of $128 Million of contributions and grants received by the HRW in the 2011 financial year.
Human Rights Watch was founded as a private American NGO in 1978, under the name of Helsinki Watch, to monitor the former Soviet Union's compliance with the Helsinki Accords. Helsinki Watch adopted a methodology of publicly "naming and shaming" abusive governments through media coverage and through direct exchanges with policymakers. By shining the international spotlight on human rights violations in the Soviet Union and its European partners, Helsinki Watch contributed to the democratic transformations of the region in the late 1980s.

Earlier this year members of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons voted in favour of a new professional and human rights policy that undermines the first of our most fundamental freedoms: freedom of conscience.
I discuss how the process unfolded and point out some of the more troubling aspects of how we ended up with a policy for medical professionals that leaves this group of Canadians without one of the most important freedoms guaranteed in our constitution.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan's "public consultation" on a policy of conscientious objection ends on Friday, August 7th.
SIGN OUR PETITION calling on provincial medical authorities to respect the freedoms guaranteed under our constitution.

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." This is what it says in the very first Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The idea of Human Rights is one of the most important fundaments of human co-existence. At the same time human rights are subject to fierce debates and Human Rights violations are common all over the world.
But what exactly are Human Rights? Who is responsible for protecting them? And do they really apply to all people?
This is the first part of the series "Focus Human Rights". It consists of this overview clip an three more specific clips for each of the three dimensions of Human Rights. Check out our Channel for the other clips!

The Human Rights Act enshrines rights British people fought for centuries, and now the Tories have pledged to scrap it. The politicians are trying to take your rights away, and much of the media have been cheering them on and spreading myths and lies. So here I take on some of the most common myths surrounding the Human Rights Act and explain why it's so important - and why we all need us to stand up and protect it.

"We thought we were going to attend a UN meeting and we witnessed a racist hate fest instead". Anti-Semitic slogans, flyers praising Hitler to come back from the dead, fundamentalist propaganda... These are images that have haunted many NGOs since the 2001 Durban Conference in South Africa. It all happened a week before 9/11... As the United States waged war against terrorism and deserted UN regulations, Asian and African states took hold of the majority in the new Human Rights Council created in 2006. For the first time, a documentary says what is going on in Geneva’s UN premises. It is explaining what became of the 1948 Universal Declaration on Human Rights. What we discover there seems very far from the miraculous consensus orchestrated by Eleanor Roosevelt 60 years ago. Nowadays, the Council hosts a direct confrontation between two visions of the world. Dictatorships and authoritarian states give lessons to the few democracies present in the Assembly. As Robert Badinter - the father of death penalty’s abolition in France - puts it: "the question of human rights once more became an ideological battlefield". Words become crushing weapons in this new Assembly. Should we forbid the defamation of religions in order to combat racism at an international level? Or does it constitute a regression when it hides discriminations made in the name of religion in certain countries? This is a very sensitive issue on the eve of the Second Durban Conference: America and European countries threaten to boycott the process...

Harper Lecture with Mark Philip Bradley: Defining Human Rights
Our consensus on what constitutes a human right dates back only to the 1940s, when the global human rights imagination first began to take shape. In this lecture, Mark Philip Bradley chronicles the complex histories that have formed our contemporary understanding of human rights and illustrates how that understanding has become a force behind international and local politics. In particular, he addresses the Indian Supreme Court’s decision last December to uphold Section 377, the colonial-era law that criminalizes sexual activities “against the order of nature,” most notably, gay sex.

In advance of President Obama’s historic trip to Ethiopia, I led discussion on the House Floor as the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Ethiopian American Caucus to speak on the importance of our nation's relationship with Ethiopia. The President’s trip provides a unique opportunity to promote democratic institutions including respect for freedom of speech and human rights, in addition to supporting economic, health, food security, and humanitarian development in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian diaspora here in the United States are the natural bridges and ambassadors to build and strengthen the economic, strategic, and humanitarian connectio

Equality: the Road Less Travelled | Professor Paul Hunt | TEDxUniversityofEssex
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Human rights actually save lives, reduce suffering, and empower individuals and communities. Often we tend to justify the importance of human rights through moral, political and legal arguments, but perhaps we need to highlight hard evidence more.
Do Human Rights work? If Human Rights work, how do we know that they work?
Professor Paul Hunt specialises in international and domestic human rights law. He has lived, and undertaken human rights work, in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the South Pacific. In 1998, he was nominated by the Government of New Zealand and elected by the United Nations to serve as an independent expert on the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1999-2002). Between 2002-2008, he served as UN Special Rapporteur on the right to the highest attainable standard of health and, in 2008, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Nordic School of Public Health. He is a member of the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex and Adjunct Professor at Waikato University, New Zealand.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

On the 27th of June, 2014, the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) established a Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Eritrea to investigate and officially document the alleged systematic violations of human rights in Eritrea. The COI will collect testimonies from victims, victim’s families, and witnesses in the Diaspora to document their suffering and to allow their stories to be heard in the hopes of obtaining justice for these victims, both alive and deceased. This decision by the HRC is aimed at exposing and holding those in Eritrea responsible for the rampant and horrific human rights violations committed since 1993. The COI has until June 2015 to collect this information and present its findings to the HRC at its 29th Session.

Neil Kramer - Tools for Global Uniformity: Human Rights, Discrimination & Equality
Red Ice Radio - Neil Kramer - Tools for Global Uniformity: Human Rights, Discrimination & Equality
Neil Kramer is a British philosopher and esotericist. His work focuses principally on spirituality, mysticism, and metaphysics. He explores the relationship between inner development and the many social and cultural factors that influence our everyday lives by drawing attention to embracing truth, confronting the negative, and transforming self. Neil returns to Red Ice Radio to pick up on our last discussion on tribal heritage, taking the concept a bit further to include problems that stem from misconceptions about human rights, the promises of equality, and self-censorship. Neil defines what he calls the Empire, or the system that is set against the growth of man, and outlines the importance of recognizing that these entities are designed to be part of our spiritual development. We consider the media’s focus on race, migration, sexual orientation and equality and how these headlines have been formulated to invoke division and polarization amongst tribes. Neil draws connections from the formation of the UN’s 1946 Commission on Human Rights to the current policies that appear to champion freedom and wellbeing, but ultimately seek to condition people to believe in an unnatural sense of sameness and uniformity amongst individuals and across cultures. Neil emphasizes the primary meaning of discrimination, a word that has been used to prevent people from making moral observations or expressing any sort of disapproval. In the second segment, we take a closer look at the war on individuality that has been dramatically reshaping our natural sense of belonging and diversity since WWII, and the destructive forces that enter the vacuum created by the disavowing of will and power. Further, Neil elucidates the general principles of preciousness and sacredness and following one’s own heart. Later, we talk about the significance of knowing one’s ancestral relationship to the lands and distinguishing the incredible healing powers that certain atmospheres provide. Our conversation closes on the ideas of transmutation and of living life as a sovereign entity of divinity in connection with real wisdom and authenticity.

He is the author and coeditor of several books, including the forthcoming “The United States and the Global Human Rights Imagination” and “Familiar Made Strange: American Icons and Artifacts after the Transnational Turn.”

The 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
UNITED NATIONS
UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
Simplified Version
This simplified version of the 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been created especially for young people.
1. We Are All Born Free & Equal. We are all born free. We all have our own thoughts and ideas. We should all be treated in the same way.
2. Don't Discriminate. These rights belong to everybody, whatever our differences.
3. The Right to Life. We all have the right to life, and to live in freedom and safety.
4. No Slavery. Nobody has any right to make us a slave. We cannot make anyone our slave.
5. No Torture. Nobody has any right to hurt us or to torture us.
6. You Have Rights No Matter Where You Go. I am a person just like you!
7. We're All Equal Before the Law. The law is the same for everyone. It must treat us all fairly.
8. Your Human Rights Are Protected by Law. We can all ask for the law to help us when we are not treated fairly.
9. No Unfair Detainment. Nobody has the right to put us in prison without good reason and keep us there, or to send us away from our country.
10. The Right to Trial. If we are put on trial this should be in public. The people who try us should not let anyone tell them what to do.
11. We're Always Innocent Till Proven Guilty. Nobody should be blamed for doing something until it is proven. When people say we did a bad thing we have the right to show it is not true.
12. The Right to Privacy. Nobody should try to harm our good name. Nobody has the right to come into our home, open our letters, or bother us or our family without a good reason.
13. Freedom to Move. We all have the right to go where we want in our own country and to travel as we wish.
14. The Right to Seek a Safe Place to Live. If we are frightened of being badly treated in our own country, we all have the right to run away to another country to be safe.
15. Right to a Nationality. We all have the right to belong to a country.
16. Marriage and Family. Every grown-up has the right to marry and have a family if they want to. Men and women have the same rights when they are married, and when they are separated.
17. The Right to Your Own Things. Everyone has the right to own things or share them. Nobody should take our things from us without a good reason.
18. Freedom of Thought. We all have the right to believe in what we want to believe, to have a religion, or to change it if we want.
19. Freedom of Expression. We all have the right to make up our own minds, to think what we like, to say what we think, and to share our ideas with other people.
20. The Right to Public Assembly. We all have the right to meet our friends and to work together in peace to defend our rights. Nobody can make us join a group if we don't want to.
21. The Right to Democracy. We all have the right to take part in the government of our country. Every grown-up should be allowed to choose their own leaders.
22. Social Security. We all have the right to affordable housing, medicine, education, and childcare, enough money to live on and medical help if we are ill or old.
23. Workers' Rights. Every grown-up has the right to do a job, to a fair wage for their work, and to join a trade union.
24. The Right to Play. We all have the right to rest from work and to relax.
25. Food and Shelter for All. We all have the right to a good life. Mothers and children, people who are old, unemployed or disabled, and all people have the right to be cared for.
26. The Right to Education. Education is a right. Primary school should be free. We should learn about the United Nations and how to get on with others. Our parents can choose what we learn.
27. Copyright. Copyright is a special law that protects one's own artistic creations and writings; others cannot make copies without permission. We all have the right to our own way of life and to enjoy the good things that art, science and learning bring.
28. A Fair and Free World. There must be proper order so we can all enjoy rights and freedoms in our own country and all over the world.
29. Responsibility. We have a duty to other people, and we should protect their rights and freedoms.
30. No One Can Take Away Your Human Rights.

Human Rights: Philosophy and History - Professor Sir Geoffrey Nice QC
One of the most dynamic aspects of law is that of Human Rights. Sir Geoffrey Nice has spent his career in this area and discusses its origns:http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/human-rights-philosophy-and-history
The philosophical and historical development of what may be regarded as essential human rights will be traced. It is essential to understand this development before criticising – or complaining about – modern Human Rights law.
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College Website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/human-rights-philosophy-and-history
Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There are currently over 1,500 lectures free to access or download from the website.

ADRA Animated Short: Human Rights
ADRA is fighting for the basic rights of at-risk individuals around the world. Girls and women are at risk of trafficking and abuse, the civil rights of minorities are ignored, and disabled people are treated unjustly. By educating communities, advocating at the government level, and rescuing at-risk individuals, ADRA is protecting the basic human rights of people throughout the world.

Doctors who object to abortion could face disciplinary action under "human rights" codes
Doctors who object to abortion could face disciplinary action under "human rights" codes

Human Rights

The Human Rights Act: myths and realities | Owen Jones talks...

English Version:
This video is an interview conducted with Said who was imprisoned for 18 months in Eritrea without charge or due process.
He was tortured and suffered ill heath during his incarceration.
He was abruptly released and until this day he doesn't know why he was imprisoned.
This is his Story...

Harper Lecture with Mark Philip Bradley: Defining Human Rights
Mark Philip Bradley is the Bernadotte E. Schmitt Professor of International History in the Department of History and the College, chair of the Committee on International Relations, and faculty director of the Pozen Family Center for Human Rights at the University of Chicago. He is the author and coeditor of several books, including the forthcoming “The United States and the Global Human Rights Imagination” and “Familiar Made Strange: American Icons and Artifacts after the Transnational Turn.”

EPISODE BREAKDOWN: On this episode of Breaking the Set, Abby Martin, features BTS’ exclusive on-the-ground coverage from Detroit, Michigan, beginning with a look at a tent city outside of downtown, where the crew witnessed a cop putting out the only source of warmth for the homeless population there with a fire extinguisher. Abby then discusses the shutoff of water services for thousands of residents across the city and speaks with Andrea Malone, a Detroit resident struggling to pay her water bills about what it’s like to face having your access to this vital necessity taken away. BTS wraps up the show with an interview with Beulah Walker, a volunteer with the Detroit Water Brigade, an organization working to prevent water shutoffs and distribute water to residents most in need in the city.
