Friday Night Fish Fry
Friday Night Fish Fry
This is from a 2008 reading at Breadloaf at Middlebury College in Vermont. I was the International Michael and Marilee Fairbanks fellow that year. It was an opportunity to learn and grow, to connect with other emerging writers writers (like my roomie Preeta Samarasan and fellow-fellow Will Allison) and at the same time an opportunity to share my work with a literary community that included so many authors of renown (Lynn Freed, Robert Boswell, Margot Livesey, Randall Kenan, my workshop leader Ursula Hegi and others), finding acceptance among them. I was so nervous I literally fled after my reading was done but in the days that followed several of those names stopped me individually to say how much they enjoyed the reading. They have no idea what that meant to me then, how affirming it was to a young writer from the Caribbean. For that, I'll always remember Breadloaf fondly; that and the folks I got to know and connect with if only for a time, and the opportunity to step out of my reality and be immersed in a literary world. I'll always remember my daily walks and time spent writing by the river and our barnyard stomps. I came home, revised Oh Gad! http://jhohadli.wordpress.com/about/interviews-guest-blogs-articles-and-reviews/reader-reviews and shortly after landed an agent and the rest of that story is still being written. At the reading, as exciting and intimidating and yet rewarding an experience as I've ever had, I opened with Friday Night Fish Fry which had previously been published in the Liberian journal Sea Breeze. This story was inspired in part by the state of our communities and the fate of our young men in the Caribbean. It saddens me that since penning this story this state of affairs has only gotten worse in some of our communities. We can do better. *steps off soapbox* I could have done a better job with this video but it took me so long to pull this together I decided it was good enough; the images (literally every reading or performance or publicity shot I could find) are less important than the words any way.- published: 21 Aug 2013

Molly Crabapple, Artist/Writer - XOXO Festival (2013)
Molly Crabapple's reinventing how independent artists find their audience and make a living. Shell Game, a series of large-scale paintings about the financial crisis, raised $65,000 from over 700 backers on Kickstarter. In 2005, Molly founded Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School in Williamsburg, a combination burlesque show and drawing salon that grew into a global movement spanning 120 cities. Recorded in September 2013 at XOXO, an arts and technology festival in Portland, Oregon celebrating independent artists using the Internet to make a living doing what they love. HEDDA GABLER at Writers Theatre - Short Trailer
NOW PLAYING at 325 Tudor Court HEDDA GABLER by Henrik Ibsen Translation by Nicholas Rudall Directed by Kimberly Senior Equal parts idealistic heroine and callous antagonist; victim of circumstance and master manipulator, Hedda Gabler finds herself trapped by society in a world that does not fit her. To survive, she sets in motion an array of schemes, sowing seeds of calculated destruction in an attempt to make an impact on her husband, friends and lovers. The result is a journey of impulse and emotion that is both achingly desperate and wildly passionate. Director Kimberly Senior and a cast of Chicago's finest actors bring their shared passion to this master work, offering audiences the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with one of the most extraordinary and seductive characters in the dramatic canon.
