Isao Kimura
Isao Kimura (木村 功, Kimura Isao, July 22, 1923 – June 4, 1981), also known as Kō Kimura, was a Japanese actor. He appeared in several films directed by Akira Kurosawa. The first was Stray Dog (1949) as Yusa the criminal. Perhaps his most notable role was in Seven Samurai as the youngest of the samurai, Katsushiro.
He died of esophageal cancer.

When you think of Akira Kurosawa, it’s easy to connect him to great samurai films like Ran, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Sanjuro. What’s surprising, however, is that he didn’t make his first samurai film until midway through his filmmaking career. That film, of course, is arguably his greatest film, Seven Samurai, which was released in 1954. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we start up our Seven Samurai Family series with Kurosawa’s masterpiece.
We talk about how well this film holds up and speculate as to why this film not only is so easy to watch despite it’s nearly three-and-a-half-hour running time, but also feels so modern. We discuss Kurosawa, what it took for him to get this film made and why he worked to make this stand apart from the glut of samurai films being made at the time. We chat about the cast, notably Toshirô Mifune, Takashi Shimura, Daisuke Katô, Isao Kimura, Minoru Chiaki, Seiji Miyaguchi and Yoshio Inaba as our titular seven, and why they all work so well here (even drawing a comparison to Coen brother casting). We look at the camera work and how Kurosawa, along with cinematographer Asakazu Nakai, proves himself a master of the medium as we look at his framing, lens choices, camera movement and more. We look at the rest of the production team to bring this world to life so perfectly (except perhaps the bald caps). And we discuss how well this film did in Japan contrasting that with why Toho Films felt the need to truncate it before releasing it to the rest of the world.

Yamaki Pine Bonsai, the Hiroshima survivor
This Japanese white pine (Pinus parvifolia) is approximately 375 years old, and is the oldest specimen in the Japanese Bonsai Collection of the National Arboretum. It is the result of 6 generations of hard work and patience by the Yamaki family. What makes it really special is that it was in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb fell in 1945; the tree survived and was later donated to the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington. Masahiko Kimura judoka VS Hélio Gracie jiu jitsuka : JUDO WINNER. In 1955, Kimura, then aged 38, took part in a fight held in Brazil in which he defeated Helio Gracie of the famous Gracie family jujitsu in a judo match is solving by submission. During the fight, Kimura threw Gracie repeatedly by Ippon seoi nage (one arm thrown over the shoulder), O-Soto-Gari (large outdoor Draw) - Projection signed by Kimura. He planned Hélio thrice o-soto-gari, O-Uchi-Gari (large internal mowing), Uchi mata (mowing the inner thigh) and Harai goshi (sweeping hip). In what relates Kimura threw Gracie repeatedly with a view to make him lose consciousness. However, the surface of the fighting area was apparently too soft so that it does happen. This Japanese white pine (Pinus parvifolia) is approximately 375 years old, and is the oldest specimen in the Japanese Bonsai Collection of the National Arboretum. It is the result of 6 generations of hard work and patience by the Yamaki family.
What makes it really special is that it was in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb fell in 1945; the tree survived and was later donated to the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington.

In 1955, Kimura, then aged 38, took part in a fight held in Brazil in which he defeated Helio Gracie of the famous Gracie family jujitsu in a judo match is solving by submission. During the fight, Kimura threw Gracie repeatedly by Ippon seoi nage (one arm thrown over the shoulder), O-Soto-Gari (large outdoor Draw) - Projection signed by Kimura. He planned Hélio thrice o-soto-gari, O-Uchi-Gari (large internal mowing), Uchi mata (mowing the inner thigh) and Harai goshi (sweeping hip). In what relates Kimura threw Gracie repeatedly with a view to make him lose consciousness. However, the surface of the fighting area was apparently too soft so that it does happen. Kimura also inflicted painful strangulation control techniques, such as Kuzure-kami-Siho-gatame (control of the four corners from the top), kesa gatame (fundamental control abeam) and sankaku-jime (triangle choke). Finally, in the thirteenth minute of the fight, Kimura positioned himself to perform a reverse ude-garami (arm by winding dislocation). Gracie refused to submit, even after his arm was broken, binding Kimura maintain grip on his arm broken Gracie. At this time, Carlos Gracie, Hélio elder, threw in the towel to stop the fight, to preserve the health of his brother. In 1994, Hélio confessed in an interview that he lost consciousness earlier in the match, but he came to his senses after Kimura had released his grip.
In tribute to the victory Kimura, the technique of reversed-ude garami has since considered taking Kimura, or simply the Kimura in the Brazilian jujutsu and, more recently, in the middle of martial arts.

Possibly the greatest Judo practitioner ever, Masahiko Kimura 木村 政彦 had countless victories, perhaps the most notable being the win over Helio Gracie in Brazil.
In this video, Kaneo Iwatsuri - one of Kimura's closest students shares the techniques that he learned directly from Kimura.
Techniques include:
•Osotogari
•Osotogari variation (against a taller opponent)
•Osotogari variation (against a shorter opponent)
•Osotogari variation (with a left handed grab)
•Osototoshi
•Munegarami
•Obitorigaeshi
•Training exercises
Kanei Iwatsuri had a long and severe training history under Masahiko Kimura. He was born in 1944 and started his training in 1955 at the age of 11. In 1966 he became a policeman in Hyogo, Japan and during the years 1966 and 1967 he was undefeated in the Police Judo Taikais. In 1969, Iwatsuri was champion of a Sambo tournement in Moscow, Russia. In 1971, he was the All Japan Senshuken Judo Taikai champion.

When you think of Akira Kurosawa, it’s easy to connect him to great samurai films like Ran, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Sanjuro. What’s surprising, however, is that he didn’t make his first samurai film until midway through his filmmaking career. That film, of course, is arguably his greatest film, Seven Samurai, which was released in 1954. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we start up our Seven Samurai Family series with Kurosawa’s masterpiece.
We talk about how well this film holds up and speculate as to why this film not only is so easy to watch despite it’s nearly three-and-a-half-hour running time, but also feels so modern. We discuss Kurosawa, what it took for him to get this film made and why he worked to make this stand apart from the glut of samurai films being made at the time. We chat about the cast, notably Toshirô Mifune, Takashi Shimura, Daisuke Katô, Isao Kimura, Minoru Chiaki, Seiji Miyaguchi and Yoshio Inaba as our titular seven, and why they all work so well here (even drawing a comparison to Coen brother casting). We look at the camera work and how Kurosawa, along with cinematographer Asakazu Nakai, proves himself a master of the medium as we look at his framing, lens choices, camera movement and more. We look at the rest of the production team to bring this world to life so perfectly (except perhaps the bald caps). And we discuss how well this film did in Japan contrasting that with why Toho Films felt the need to truncate it before releasing it to the rest of the world.
It’s a brilliant film and the foundation of a series we’re quite excited to talk about. So tune in!
