Oran (Arabic: وهران, Wahrān) is a major city on the northwestern Mediterranean coast of Algeria, and the second largest city of the country.
It is the capital of the Oran Province (wilaya). The city has a population of 759,645 (2008), while the metropolitan area has a population of approximately 1,500,000, making it the second largest city in Algeria. Oran is a major port, and since the 1960s has been the commercial, industrial, and educational centre of western Algeria.
Oran was founded in 903 by Moorish Andalusi traders but was captured by the Spanish under Cardinal Cisneros in 1509. Spanish sovereignty lasted until 1708, when the city was conquered by the Ottomans. Spain recaptured the city in 1732. However, its value as a trading post had decreased greatly, so King Charles IV sold the city to the Turks in 1792. Ottoman rule lasted until 1831, when it fell to the French.
During French rule over Algeria, Oran was the capital of a département of the same name (number 92). In July 1940, the British navy shelled French warships in the port after they refused a British ultimatum to surrender which was designed to ensure the fleet would not fall into German hands. The action increased the hatred of the Vichy regime for Britain but convinced the world that the British would fight on alone against Nazi Germany and its allies. The Vichy government held Oran during World War II until its capture by the Allies in late 1942, during Operation Torch.

Once upon a time, there was a crooked man. When he was good, he was very, very good. And when he was bad, it was murder...
Woodward Lopeman: Why do you work at it so hard proving you're a son-of-a-bitch.::Paris Pittman Jr.: Because I am. It's my profession and I'm on top!
Paris Pittman Jr.: [after discussing his hidden loot and escape plans] I'm putting my trust in all of you. Keep quiet.::The Missouri Kid: Like asking a pack of coyotes to keep quiet about a dead horse!
Cyrus McNutt: They're killing me by inches, Dudley!::Dudley Whinner: You'll outlive us all. You got a lot of inches.
Woodward Lopeman: Don't tell me you can't make speeches; you could talk a coyote out of a chicken.
Paris Pittman Jr.: [at dedication of new prison dining hall] On behalf of the men, I'd like to express to the lieutenant governor, and to you, warden, and to the schoolteacher, and the other distinguished guests, and all those law-abiding citizens out there, just how much all this means to us in here. Imagine, after all we've been, all we've done to society [lifts plate, smiling] we get chicken - and green peas - and mashed potatoes! [beams, then flings plate at the wall over warden's head]
Mr. Lomax: A man works like a nigger all his life to get ahead. Some bastard just comes along and takes it from him.
Paris Pittman Jr.: [Entering with a mask intending to rob the family] Ah, nothing like fried chicken while it's still hot and crispy! So the quicker you open that safe and give us the money, the quicker you can get back to that tasty-looking chicken.
Paris Pittman Jr.: [to his cell mates about an escape plan] Anyway, start smelling around, and don't forget, I'm trusting you to keep quiet, all of you keep quiet.::The Missouri Kid: [Cynically] Like askin' a pack of coyotes to keep quiet about a dead horse.
Woodward Lopeman: [as Paris is leaving the room] Why do you work at it so hard proving to yourself you're a sonuvabitch?::Paris Pittman Jr.: [Stopping and turning] Because I am. It's my profession , and I'm on top.
Woodward Lopeman: [looking at the oft-used barrel bathtubs] Which one of these is the freshest?::Woodward Lopeman: [sardonically] I wouldn't let a cow drink out of any of them.

Breath of my life,
Breath of my existence
Breath of my life
Proclaiming in my soul,
Uplifting my heart
Uplifting my heart
I am standing before you
Without fear or desire
I am standing before you
The concerns of the morning will come
When the sun rises
When the sun rises
Song, sacred, eternal
Lift on high the voice of the people
Song, I am reconciled
Let it rise up from the moorlands
The psalm is like a flame,
Illuminating all around
The psalm is like a flame
My lips opened
When the day began
When the day began
Song, sacred, eternal
Lift on high the voice of the people
Song, I am reconciled
Let it rise up from the moorlands
Sing, Sing, Sing
A new song, a song of the dust
Spoken Passage: (unofficial translation)
Looking out the window of morning
From the evening to the door of night
I asked the question
And the answer was in the water of dawn
[of the lake?]
