The Broadway theatre district is a popular tourist attraction in New York. According to The Broadway League, Broadway shows sold approximately $1.081 billion worth of tickets in calendar year 2011, compared with $1.037 billion for 2010. Attendance in 2011 was 12.13 million.
New York did not have a significant theatre presence until about 1750, when actor-managers Walter Murray and Thomas Kean established a resident theatre company at the Theatre on Nassau Street, which held about 280 people. They presented Shakespeare plays and ballad operas such as The Beggar's Opera. In 1752, William Hallam sent a company of twelve actors from Britain to the colonies with his brother Lewis as their manager. They established a theatre in Williamsburg, Virginia and opened with The Merchant of Venice and The Anatomist. The company moved to New York in the summer of 1753, performing ballad operas and ballad-farces like Damon and Phillida. The Revolutionary War suspended theatre in New York, but thereafter theatre resumed in 1798, the year the 2,000-seat Park Theatre was built on Chatham Street (now called Park Row). The Bowery Theatre opened in 1826, followed by others. Blackfaceminstrel shows, a distinctly American form of entertainment, became popular in the 1830s, and especially so with the arrival of the Virginia Minstrels in the 1840s.

A celebration of that charming dame who could dance before she could walk, Backwards in High Heels was conceived and developed in 2007 by Lynette Barkley and Christopher McGovern. The book, musical arrangements and original songs are by McGovern (Lizzie

The musical is set on an island paradise during World War II and tells two parallel love stories against the dangers of prejudice and war and the importance of valuing diversity. Its portrayal of Americans stationed in an alien culture in wartime is as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences in 1949.
The original play won 10 Tony Awards in 1949 and set the stage for a highly successful movie version in 1958 starring Rossano Brazzi, and Mitzi Gaynor. The piece won the Pulitzer Prize for

He expanded his reach and scope of programming by taking over as Artistic Director for the Times Square Group, NYC, where he developed and implemented educational theatre programs for the public schools of NYC. In 2006, He founded his own non-profit educational theatre company called Lighthouse Youth Theatre and Education. Inc. LYT is an amalgamation of John’s professional and educational talents that blend into one organization dedicated to training young people in the arts and giving them the tools necessary to succeed not only in the arts, but in life. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s award-winning South Pacific is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener.
The piece won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950. The score contains many of the most recognizable songs in Broadway history, including “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Younger Than Springtime,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair,” “I’m In Love With a Wonderful Guy” and “There Is Nothing Like a Dame.”

Theater Talk: The History and Heritage of Broadway
We look at the history of Broadway and the world of the theater from two different perspectives. First, we welcome Michael Kantor, producer of the new PBS documentary "Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy," which examines how the rich traditions and the musical influence of the Jewish religion helped in the creation of the modern Broadway musical.
Also on the program, we discuss "Performance of the Century: 100 Years of Actors' Equity Association and the Rise of Professional American Theater" with author Robert Simonson and Nick Wyman, President of Actors' Equity Association. Simonson's book looks back at 100 years of the powerful performers'

Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town.
You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. You can ride roller coasters, stroll down the boardwalk, enjoy some beach time, and then head over the Nathan's Famous hot dogs. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface. Strawberry Fields is a section of Central Park dedicated to the memory of John Lennon.
And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. Have you been to New York? What are your favorite things about this city? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Our recent week in New York City was an action-packed one. We decided to set ourselves a challenge to see and do as much as we possibly could, and that gave way to this travel video guide which highlights 50 of the top attractions. In a city like New York this means we barely scratched the surface, but hopefully this video will highlight the cornucopia of possibilities that is the Big Apple.
We try our best to cover all of the top attractions including fine arts, entertainment, festivals, dining, architecture and museums as well as focusing on lesser known off the beaten path attractions to cover all forms of tourism. If you only have time to visit only one city in the United States it ought to be NYC, USA:

Times Square is a major commercial intersection[1] and a neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, at the junction of Broadway (now converted into a pedestrian plaza) and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. Brightly adorned with billboards and advertisements, Times Square – iconified as "The Crossroads of the World",[2][3][4][5][6] "The Center of the Universe",[7][8][9] and "The Great White Way"[10][11][12] – is the hub of the Broadway Theater District,[13] one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections,[14] and a major center of the world's entertainment industry.[15] Times Square is one of the world's most visited tourist attractions, hosting over 39 million visitors annually.[16] Approximately 330,000 people pass through Times Square daily, many of whom are either tourists or people working in the area.[17]
Formerly Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in April 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the newly erected Times Building – now called One Times Square – site of the annual ball drop on New Year's Eve,[18] a tradition which began on December 31, 1907 and continues today, attracting thousands to the Square every New Year's.
The northern triangle of Times Square is technically Duffy Square, dedicated in 1937 to Chaplain Francis P. Duffy of New York City's "Fighting 69th" Infantry Regiment; a memorial to Duffy is located there, along with a statue of George M. Cohan, and the TKTS discount theatre tickets booth. The stepped red roof of the TKTS booth also provides seating for various events. The Duffy Statue and the square were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.[19]

Simonson's book looks back at 100 years of the powerful performers' union and how it strives to help, not only the situation of individual actors, but also the quality of live theater throughout the country.
Taped: 2013
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

Westchester Broadway Theatre Presents Backwards In High Heels.
BACKWARDS IN HIGH HEELS August 13 - September 20, 2015
Backwards In High Heels is a toe-tapping, swirling, gliding account of Ginger Rogers’ ambitious public and private life. The Musical takes its title from a quote from a 1982 “Frank & Ernest” cartoon about Fred Astaire and Rogers: “Sure he was great, but don’t forget that Ginger Rogers did everything he did — backwards and in high heels.”
A celebration of that charming dame who could dance before she could walk, Backwards in High Heels was conceived and developed in 2007 by Lynette Barkley and Christopher McGovern. The book, musical arrangements and original songs are by McGovern (Lizzie Borden, A Visit to Roswell and many other original songs and musicals.) The show features vintage movie musical numbers like 'Fascinatin' Rhythm,' 'Let's Call the Whole Thing Off,' 'Embraceable You,' and 'A Fine Romance,' as well as original songs to showcase the major events in Ginger Roger’s life.
The musical debuted in 2007 at the Florida Stage in West Palm Beach. The show broke box office records in its World Premiere production and has had numerous heralded performances around the country.
We are thrilled to bring this new hit to the WBT stage! Jeremy Benton, who starred in our productions of Singin’ In The Rain and White Christmas, will direct and choreograph the show. The Assistant Choreographer is Amy Van Norstrand. Musical Direction by Jose Simbulan

Westchester Broadway Theatre Proudly Presents GODSPELL
Book & Concept by John Michael Tebelak
Music & Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
Directed by John Fanelli, Musical Direction by Bill Stanley, Choreography by Jonathan Stahl
July 9th – September 9th, 2015
This immensely successful rock opera was the first major musical theatre offering from 3-time Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden). It is based on the Gospel according to St Matthew. It focuses on the last days of Jesus, and includes dramatized versions of several well-known parables. Jesus's messages of kindness, tolerance, and love come vibrantly to life. The cast are conceived as clowns, improvising scenery and costumes, and using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques, pantomime, comic timing and varied musical styles to interpret one of humanity's greatest events.
The score, an eclectic blend of songs ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, features many beloved songs including "Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord," "Learn Your Lessons Well," "All For The Best," "All Good Gifts," "Turn Back, O Man" and "By My Side".
The show opened Off-Broadway, on May 17, 1971, and has played in various touring companies and revivals many times since. GODSPELL opened on Broadway in 1976, it was directed by John Michael Tebelak, and was met by much critical acclaim. There was a 2011 revival on Broadway in 2011. Several cast albums have been released over the years and one of its songs, "Day by Day" from the original cast album, reached #13 on the Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1972.
We are thrilled to bring this timeless classic to the WBT stage! Director John Fanelli, who has directed SOS productions of Peter Pan, Big River and Ragtime, here at WBT, will be at the helm. The Associate Director/Choreographer is Jonathan Stahl. The Musical Director is Bill Stanley.
Our production stars: Kareema Castro, Xander Chauncey (as Judas), Josh Kenney, Greta Kleckner, Nicholas Park, Devon Perry, Nathan Andrew Riley, Gilbert D. Sanchez (as Jesus), Corinne Scott, Sarah Smithton, Karley Willocks and Jonathan Stahl.
Set Design is by Steve Loftus, Lighting Design is by Andrew Gmoser, Sound Design is by Jonathan Hatton, Costume Design is by Matthew Hemesath. The Production Stage Manager is Victor Lukas, Properties are by Grumpy Props. As with all our productions, Lisa Tiso is the Associate Producer.
John J. Fanelli (Director) holds a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of California, San Diego. Mr. Fanelli has had more than seventeen successful years directing, teaching and creating programs for young people in theatre arts. John helped to establish a network of theatre programs for young people that spanned the coast of California and reached to New Zealand. He returned to NY in 2004 and developed Young Artists of the WBT. He has directed PETER PAN, BIG RIVER, SEUSSICAL, and RAGTIME with Standing Ovation Studios at WBT.

50 THINGS TO DO IN NEW YORK CITY | Top Attractions Travel Guide

Times Square Travel Guide - Must-See Attractions
Times Square Travel Guide - Must-See Attractions

Theater Talk: The History and Heritage of Broadway
