Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia. Sydney's urban area is in a coastal basin, which is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Blue Mountains to the west, the Hawkesbury River to the north and the Royal National Park to the south.
The most important places to visit in Sydney are: Sydney Opera House (among the world's most recognized landmarks. Set on the Sydney harbor, it is an unforgettable sight), Sydney Harbor Bridge (simply called "the bridge" by locals, courageous ones can even climb up the bridge), Bronte Beach (lesser known than Bondi, it is a beautiful beach, popular amongst families), Blue Mountains (an unspoiled mountain range filled with Eucalyptus trees. It is located 30 miles from Sydney, and there are plenty of hiking trails), Bondi Beach (Sydney's most famous beach, its lively promenade is as exciting as the beach) and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Sydney travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

The Gold Coast has the largest cross-state metropolitan area population in Australia, due to the inclusion of Tweed Heads, New South Wales in its metropolitan area. The Gold Coast's metropolitan area converges with that of Greater Brisbane, forming part of an urban conurbation of over 3 million people.
The most important places to visit in Gold Coast are: Surfer's Paradise Beach, Southern Cross 4WD Tours, Burleigh Heads National Park, Cheers Tavern, Gihooley's Irish Pub, Howl at the Moon, Liars Bar Broadbeach Tavern, Mybar, Wintersun, Melba's On The Park, and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Gold Coast travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. Purpose built as Australia’s capital city, Canberra is a 3-hour drive from both the snowy mountains and the beautiful beaches of New South Wales. It is a city which honors Australia’s past and shapes its future.
With an expansive bush beauty, a relaxed attitude and colorful events, Canberra is far more than a political capital. Designed for a young nation that was just finding its feet, this city is home to many of the country's most important stories; stories that have come to define what it means to be Australian.
At the heart of Canberra’s creation story is Lake Burley Griffin. A long-standing rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne meant that neither one could be the nation’s capital. Instead, in 1911, the government launched an international design competition seeking a master plan for a brand new city.
The victor, Chicago architect Walter Burley Griffin, won with a garden city design focused on a man-made lake which fits perfectly within the landscape.
When, the nation’s Governor General stood in a dusty paddock in 1913 and announced the name of the new capital, he told the nation that the city had, lying before it, a splendid destiny.
Over 100 years later, that destiny has been fulfilled in a city that preserves the great chapters of Australia’s history and continues to write the future pages of the nation’s story.

http://www.expedia.com/Adelaide-and-vicinity.d6051330.Destination-Travel-Guides
Adelaide is the capital of South Australia and is situated close to the Great Southern Ocean.
It is a compact beachside city that is full of churches, stone buildings and beautiful parklands.
This picturesque city is unusual amongst Australian cities in that it was founded by free settlers, not convicts. Those early founders put a lot of passion into creating a better life for themselves even though they were many thousands of miles from home.
Because of that history, Adelaide has a unique sense of refinement and beauty.
One of the most popular places to visit is Victoria Square which is right in the heart of the city. From here, it is easy to wander along the North Terrace District and admire the graceful buildings and museums which echo with stories from the past.
At the South Australian Museum, visitors can learn about the rich cultures that were in the area before the Europeans arrived.
Another great place to visit is the Art Gallery of South Australia where visitors can enjoy the extensive collections of Australian and International Art.
Don’t miss the legendary Adelaide Oval which many claim to be one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world.
Adelaide is also well known as a gateway to the famous Barossa and Clair Valleys which are a food and wine lovers paradise.
Many of the early settlers to this area were German and they brought with them grapes from their homeland. The area is now well-known for producing outstanding shiraz and reisling.
While you are in the area, stop at any of the many wineries for a wine tasting or to enjoy a meal using fine local produce.
Adelaide is an old world city that attracts visitors for its elegance and romance.

Perth is a must visit if you're thinking of a trip over to Western Australia, the beautiful coastline and Perth attractions make it the ideal place to take family, friends or your partner.
The city is easy to navigate, with everything fairly close, Hay and Murray Street is home to big name shops, cinemas and the GPO.
Kings Park and Botanic Gardens are a beautiful place for a stroll and offers some great views of the city. The Botanic Gardens features over 3,000 species and the Rio Tinto Naturescape is great for the kids.
The coastline is one of Perth's draws, and if the heat is getting to you head for a dip at the golden sands on Cottesloe Beach, City Beach or Scarborough.
Fremantle is located at the mouth of the Swan River, boasting historical buildings, the Roundhouse and the Maritime Museum it's a popular place to visit. From Fremantle, hop on a boat over to Rottnest Island, it's a protected reserve and great for walking and cycling trails.
For entertainment, Perth offers popular musicals, plays and dance performances, along with bars, restaurants and clubs.

A modern city, Perth is the gem of Australia’s west coast and the capital of Western Australia. This friendly metropolis boasts pristine beaches, clear water, and plenty of coastline – not to mention an abundance of nature and mineral resources.
Start your day of Perth sightseeing with a walk through Kings Park, which is larger than New York’s Central Park and home to the Western Australia Botanic Garden. More than 3,000 species of Western Australia’s plant life, including vibrant flowers, are on display here. Most of the park consists of bushland, which means lots of wildlife and quite a few walking trails.
After a morning of reflection in the park, head over to the Swan Bell Tower to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Don’t forget your camera! You will notice the diverse nature of Perth’s architecture from this vantage point, including the modern glass structures and London-inspired Tudor buildings.
Perth tours are never complete without a ferry ride to Rottnest Island, affectionately called “Rotto” by the locals. This getaway is rife with opportunities to snorkel in the Indian Ocean, see wildlife such as seals and birds, and travel across more than 31 miles of cycle ways on a rented bicycle.
Once your feet are back on mainland Western Australia, visit one of the jewels, and ultimately what draws much of the Perth tourism: Swan Valley. This region has a landscape peppered with vineyards, no surprise given that growing grapes has been a long-standing tradition in Swan Valley. Following a short (or leisurely paced) day trip to Swan Valley, return to Perth and head to Hillarys Boat Harbour for a sunset dinner.

The first Off-Earth Mining Forum, held at UNSW Australia's Kensington campus in February 2013 was an extraordinary event. Media coverage had a reach of over 8 million people across the world, with radio coverage in the UK and US, newspaper coverage in India and New Zealand and coverage by all Australian television networks. The second Off-Earth Mining Forum, to be held in November 2015 in conjunction with the third International Future Mining Conference, will be even bigger. The excitement generated by this research, fundamental to the establishment of economies in space, is growing.
The forum will host speakers from across the spectrum of off-earth mining issues: missions, resources, mining technologies, robotics, automation, instrumentation, legal impediments, business risks, and ethical considerations.
Asteroid mining companies are soon set to launch their first spacecraft, and NASA is planning colonisation in the near future utilising resources available in space through off-earth mining research activities. If you'd like to know what they're planning and what they need to do to make it happen, we'll see you at the Second Off-Earth Mining Forum as part of the Third International Future Mining Conference.
We welcome participation from active domestic and international researchers, as well as interested parties from industry, government and the public.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-08-01/commodity-collapse-comes-full-circle-coal-mine-valued-630-million-2011-just-sold-one
There is a coal mine in Australia called Issac Plains. In 2011 it sold for 630 million dollars at the height of China's commodity boom. It was a golden age for Australia's mining industry. People were leaving big cities like Sydney and Perth to go work in the Outback. They were making hundreds of thousands of dollars driving trucks and other easy labor jobs.
Earlier this year it was priced @ the grand old price of one dollar. The crash of commodity prices has destroyed Australia's mining industry and that of many other nations that were reliant on the Chinese consuming their exports.
Now with the collapse in commodity prices due to a decrease in Chinese demand there are serious issues facing the industry.
While commodity prices may rebound based on Asian demand there isn't much evidence that anything will happen any time soon.
Prices are probably going to be near current levels at least until other parts of Asia and the 3rd world increase their consumption.
But this is a great example of the "resource course" -- nations with a lot of natural resources do wonderful when commodity or resource prices are real high but then when they collapse -- they don't do bad -- they do HORRIBLY. Russia had a currency crisis earlier this year when oil prices fell. Louisiana is in deep financial straights and the main state university system is on the verge in bankruptcy.
Any time a state govt or a country is over-reliant on commodity based taxes to finance their govt expenditures -- they face financial problems when those commodity prices fall.
An interesting but cautionary tale of what happens when speculators bid up prices too high.

Ehrlich warns ‘you are destroying your life support systems here’ and says his prediction of a 90% chance civilisation will collapse in 50 years is based on ‘gut feeling’ Australia is “working to become a third-world country” through its economic dependence on mining natural resources for export and reliance on coalmining, according to doomsday ecologist Paul Ehrlich.
Ehrlich made the prediction on the ABC’s Q&A; program on Monday night, after dismissing the views of other panellists on the question of whether Australia was overpopulated as “mostly nonsense, unfortunately,” and before praising the economic theories of electronics retailer Dick Smith.
“Talk to your ecologist,” Ehrlich said. “You are destroying your life support systems here. You are working at it really hard. You are also working to become a third-world country, because your specialisation of course is to take your raw materials, like your coal, which will destroy the world of your grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and ship of as much of it unprocessed as you possibly can out to the rest of the world.”
Ehrlich told host Tony Jones, who seemed to be struggling to manage the octogenarian academic, that his prediction of a 90% chance civilisation would collapse in 50 years was based on a “gut feeling”, and freely admitted that a number of his predictions, such as the prediction the United Kingdom would be a small group of impoverished islands occupied by 70 million hungry people by the year 2000, hadn’t quite borne out.
He suggested the chances of a nuclear war between the US and Russia were greater now than they were during the cold war and the chances of nuclear war between India and Pakistan were greater still.
“Who can guess what the odds are on those, you get scared,” he said. “But on the general trend, I think we will be very, very fortunate to avoid a collapse.”
Ehrlich was joined on the panel by the education minister, Simon Birmingham, opposition finance spokesman, Tony Burke, writer and entertainer Wendy Harmer, and Dai Le, a Liberal councillor for Fairfield in Sydney and founder of the Diverse Australasian Women’s Network.
Neither Burke, a former immigration minister, nor Birmingham agreed Australia was overpopulated.

Its Hong Kong-listed shares have also fallen some 55% this year.
Trading of the firm's Hong Kong-listed shares were halted earlier on Monday ahead of the announcement.
"The sale process is in response to Glencore receiving a number of unsolicited expressions of interest for these mines from various potential buyers," the firm said in an email.
"This will allow potential buyers to bid to purchase either one or both of the mines and may or may not result in a sale," it added.
The Cobar operation is a high-grade underground mine and plant, while the Lomas Bayas operation is a low-cost, open pit mine.
In Australia, Glencore has 19 mining complexes across the country, including coal, copper, nickel and zinc operations, port facilities, offices and agricultural businesses, among others. It is one of the biggest exporters of Australian grain.
In Chile, Glencore owns and has stakes in several mines, as well as a hydro-power project.
Last week, the firm announced it would dramatically cut its zinc production.
The move comes amid a 30% fall in the price of zinc in recent months. The company said it would cut 500,000 tonnes of zinc production - or 4% of the world's total supply.
Most of the zinc-related cutbacks will be in Australia, where more than 500 jobs will be lost, as well as South America and Kazakhstan.
As it attempts to reduce its debt, the firm has also cut copper production and suspended dividend payments to shareholders. It is also issuing new shares to raise money.

Two significant coal mine disasters took place here at the no 20 Shaft in Dalyston, Victoria, Australia
The first occurred during the first year of operation on the 20th February 1931, when 4 men died underground.
Then disaster strikes once again, on the 15th February 1937, in which another 13 men died underground this explosion was so powerful ,it blew the cage out of the shaft some 40 ft above the surface, and hit the poppet head, making this the worst mining disaster in Australia's history.
The newspaper of the day "the Canberra Times" can be read from the national archives. (Link Below)
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/2424471
This second disaster, in which Thirteen miners were killed from the explosion, resulted in a successful national campaign to improve conditions for all Australian miners.
So at least some good came from the sad deaths of these miners.
May they rest in piece.
The Dalyston township today, is nothing more than a few assorted stones and cement slabs laying around, and allotment numbers found on maps of the area.

What’s going to drive our economy now that the mining boom is over?
Australia’s economy was sheltered from the worst of 2008’s infamous Global Financial Crisis by a fortuitously timed resources boom, spurred on by China’s insatiable appetite for almost anything we could dig out of the ground.
However, although the mining sector has in no way breathed its last breath, the end of the construction phase of this boom as well as lower commodities prices have heralded a significant industry slow down.
Fact is we’ll never have another big mining boom like this again so the question many are asking is…what will drive our economy forward from hereon in?
One of the answers lies in our rapidly expanding and internationally sought after services sector, while the other is right over our heads - our housing markets.

history kalgoorlie The town was founded in 1892, when gold was discovered in the area. Australia had seen several major gold rushes over the previous three decades, mostly centred on the east coast, but these had mostly been exhausted by the 1890s. With the discovery of a new goldfield, an entire new gold rush began, with thousands flocking to the area. By 1898, it was the third largest town in the colony, with a population of 15,000, and another 10,000 in the surrounding region. At its peak, 700 mining companies based in Coolgardie were registered with the London Stock Exchange. The town also supported a wide variety of businesses and services, including a railway, a swimming pool (first public baths in the state), many hotels and several newspapers.
The value of Coolgardie to the colony in the late 1890s was so significant that it was used as leverage to force Western Australia to join the Australian federation - Britain and the eastern colonies threatened to create a new state to be named Auralia around Coolgardie and other regional goldfields, such as Kalgoorlie, if the government in Perth did not agree to hold a referendum on federation. The Western Australian government reluctantly complied and a referendum was held just in time to become a founding state in the new federation. When federation did occur in 1901, Coolgardie was the centre of a federal electorate, the Division of Coolgardie. Soon after in November 1901, Alf Morgans from the state electorate of Coolgardie was elected Premier of Western Australia.
However, the gold began to decrease in the early 1900s, and by World War I, the town was in serious decline. The federal electorate was abolished in 1913 due to the diminished population as many of its residents left for other towns where the gold was still plentiful, and it soon ceased to be a municipality. The situation remained unchanged throughout the century, as its population slipped to around 200 and it became a virtual ghost town. Despite this, many of the buildings from its peak were retained, which in recent years has helped start a small revival in the town's fortunes. The development of a tourist industry has once again created some employment in the town, resulting in a small increase in population, and it appears to be no longer in danger of dying completely.

The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine.
Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyors, jacks and shearers.
