James Timothy Gleeson (22 November 1915 – 20 October 2008) was one of Australia's foremost artists. He was also a poet, critic, writer and curator. He played a significant role in the Australian art scene, including serving on the board of the National Gallery of Australia.
Gleeson was born in the Sydney district of Hornsby and he attended East Sydney Technical College. As a young man, he was attracted to work of the likes of Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico and Max Ernst. In 1938 he studied at Sydney Teachers College, where he gained two years training in general primary school teaching. He also joined the Sydney Branch of the assertively experimental Contemporary Art Society. At this time Gleeson became interested in the writings of psychologists such as Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, which would become major intellectual influences for his art.
Gleeson's themes generally delved into the subconscious using literary, mythological or religious subject matter. He was particularly interested in Jung's archetypes of the collective unconscious.
James Joseph Gleeson (March 5, 1912 – May 1, 1996) was an American outfielder, scout and coach in Major League Baseball. A native of Kansas City, Missouri, he attended Rockhurst University. As a player, he was a switch-hitter who threw right-handed, stood 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) (185 cm) tall and weighed 190 pounds (86 kg).
Gleeson played all or parts of five seasons (1936; 1939–42) in major league baseball for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. In his best season, for the 1940 Chicago Cubs, Gleeson appeared in 129 games, batted 485 times and made 152 hits, including 39 doubles, 11 triples, five home runs and 61 runs batted in; he batted .313 that season. Overall, Gleeson appeared in 392 major-league games, batting .263 with 16 home runs and 154 RBI.
He remained in the game after his playing career ended as a minor league manager, and major league scout and coach. Although he worked for a time for his "hometown" Kansas City Athletics as a scout and major league coach (1957), he spent much of his career in the New York Yankees organization, serving as the first-base coach on Yogi Berra's staff during the Yanks' 1964 pennant-winning season.
Brendan Gleeson (born 29 March 1955) is an Irish actor. His best-known films include Braveheart, Gangs of New York, In Bruges, 28 Days Later, Troy, the Harry Potter films, The Guard and the role of Michael Collins in The Treaty. He won an Emmy Award in 2009 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the film Into the Storm.
Gleeson was born in Dublin, the son of Pat and Frank Gleeson. Gleeson has described himself as having been an avid reader as a child. After training as an actor, he returned to Ireland and worked for several years as a secondary school teacher of Irish and English at the now defunct Catholic Belcamp College in North County Dublin, which closed in 2004. He was working simultaneously as an actor while teaching, doing semi-professional and professional productions in Dublin and surrounding areas. He left the teaching profession to commit full-time to acting in 1991.
Gleeson started his film career at the age of 34.[citation needed] He first came to prominence in Ireland for his role as Michael Collins in The Treaty, a television film broadcast on RTÉ One, and for which he won a Jacob's Award in 1992. He has acted in such films as Braveheart, I Went Down, Michael Collins, Gangs of New York, Cold Mountain, 28 Days Later, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven, Lake Placid, Artificial Intelligence: AI, Mission: Impossible II and The Village. He won critical acclaim for his performance as Irish gangster Martin Cahill in John Boorman's 1998 film The General.
Kelly Reilly (born 18 July 1977) is an English actress. Her performance in After Miss Julie at the Donmar Warehouse made her a star of the London stage and earned her a nomination for a Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actress of 2003. Reilly's performance in the 2005 British comedy film, Mrs Henderson Presents, won her the Empire Award for Best Newcomer in 2006. Her first lead role came in 2008 in the critically acclaimed British horror film, Eden Lake, and in 2009, she had a high-profile role on prime time British television in the three-part police drama Above Suspicion. That year she also appeared in three major films, Sherlock Holmes, Triage, and Me and Orson Welles. In 2011 she reprised her role as Mary Watson in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. In 2012, Reilly will star opposite Denzel Washington in the Robert Zemeckis film Flight.
Reilly was born and brought up in Chessington; her father was in the police and her mother was a part-time secretary at Kingston Hospital. She attended Tolworth Girls' School, where she became interested in drama.
James Hillier Blount (born 22 February 1974), better known by his stage name James Blunt, is an English singer-songwriter and former army officer, whose debut album, Back to Bedlam and single releases, including "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye My Lover", brought him to fame in 2005. His repertoire can be best described as a mix of acoustic-tinged pop, rock and folk. After recording on the independent American label Custard Records, Blunt won two Brit Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, and by 2006 was nominated for five Grammy Awards. The following year, he released his second album All the Lost Souls (2007). Blunt's third studio album, Some Kind of Trouble, was released in November 2010. Worldwide, Blunt has sold over 18 million albums, and his debut album, Back to Bedlam, is the best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK.
Blunt was an officer in the Life Guards, a cavalry regiment of the British Army, and served under NATO in Kosovo during the conflict there in 1999. While posted to Kosovo, Blunt was introduced to the work of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF or "Doctors Without Borders"). Since then, Blunt has supported MSF by holding meet-and-greet auctions at many of his concerts.
