Moral Foundations of Politics (PLSC 118) Professor Shapiro transitions today to the third and final section of the course, an in-depth look at democracy and its institutions. According to him, democracy is the most successful at delivering on the mature Enlightenment's twin promises to recognize individual rights as the ultimate political good and to base politics on some kind of commitment to objective knowledge. And interestingly, democracy as a tradition was not made famous by its champions, but rather by its critics. Today, Professor Shapiro guides the class through the writings of Plato, Tocqueville, Madison, and Dahl. He zeroes in specifically on American democracy and such concepts as tyranny of the majority, factionalism, and checks and balances. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction and Last Class Recap 02:39 - Chapter 2. Democracy and Fear of Majority Tyranny 16:19 - Chapter 3. Madison and the Constitution: Majority Tyranny and Factions 38:03 - Chapter 4. Moral Foundations of Politics (PLSC 118) Majority rule and democratic competition serve as the focus of this, second lecture on the democratic tradition. What it is about majority rule that confers legitimacy on collective decisions. Is there validity to a utilitarian justification, that catering to the wishes of the majority maximizes the happiness of the greatest number? Does majority rule reflect what Rousseau called the general will? What, even, is the general will? Does Arrow's paradox indicate that the results of voting are arbitrary? Is majority rule just an exercise in realpolitik? Professor Shapiro makes the point that crosscutting cleavages discussed on Monday are the key to unlocking majority rule and limiting the possibility of domination; although one may be in the majority today, the possibility of being in the minority tomorrow prevents tyranny. Several models of democracy are discussed: the public choice model of Buchanan and Tullock, Rae and Barry's critique of Buchanan and Tullock, Schumpeter's marketplace model, the Hotelling-Downs median voter theorem, and Huntington's two turnover test. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction: Majority Rule and Democratic Competition 11:38 - Chapter 2. Locke on Majority Rule 17:24 - Chapter 3. Why does Majority Rule Limit the Possibility of Domination? 25:55 - Chapter 4. Majority versus Unanimity Rule 30:32 - Chapter 5. Schumpeter: Non-dominant and Pluralist Competition Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: http://open.yale.edu/courses This course was recorded in Spring 2010.

PM Christie declares Majority Rule Day as a milestone of equality The Journey To Majority Rule Nassau, The Bahamas -- On January 9, Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie in his communication to the House of Assembly announced that Majority Rule Day belongs to all Bahamians, black and white, rich and poor, young and old, city dweller and Family Islander, PLP, FNM, DNA and independent alike. "It belongs to all of us," said PM Christie. "January 10th should be commemorated and celebrated by all of us because it represents one of the most singular moments in our evolution as a people. Indeed, Mr. Speaker, with the exception of Emancipation from Slavery in 1834 and the attainment of Independence in 1973, there is no event of greater consequence and historical importance than the attainment of Majority Rule on January 10th, 1967." The Prime Minister pointed out the meaning of attaining Majority Rule to Bahamians who participated in making it become a reality in 1967. He said Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes has long been on record with the view that the historical significance has more social impact on Bahamian culture than either Emancipation or attaining Independence. "There is much to commend that point of view because in truth January 10th, 1967 represents the moment of transition from the old Bahamas to a New Bahamas; from minority government to Majority Rule; from an oligarchy to an authentic democracy founded on the principles of true universal adult suffrage; principles which only achieved expression in The Bahamas on January 10th, 1967 - forty-five (45) years ago tomorrow," said PM Christie. "January 10th represents one of the highest peaks in the historic - and still ongoing - struggle of the Bahamian people for economic empowerment, for equality of opportunity, and for social justice. It was an enormously important milestone in a continuing journey that was begun centuries ago when some anonymous slave struck the first blow for freedom in our land."

The Hindu 2015-04-14Majority rule is a decision rule that selects alternatives which have a majority, that is, more than half the votes. It is the binary decision rule used most often in influential decision-making bodies, including the legislatures of democratic nations. Some scholars have recommended against the use of majority rule, at least under certain circumstances, due to an ostensible trade-off between the benefits of majority rule and other values important to a democratic society. Most famously, it has been argued that majority rule might lead to a "tyranny of the majority", and the use of supermajoritarian rules and constitutional limits on government power have been recommended to mitigate these effects. Recently some voting theorists have argued that majority rule is the rule that best protects minorities.
Though plurality (first-past-the post) is often mistaken for majority rule, they are not the same. Plurality makes the options with the most votes the winner, regardless of whether the fifty percent threshold is passed. This is equivalent to majority rule when there are only two alternatives. However, when there are more than two alternatives, it is possible for plurality to choose an alternative that has fewer than fifty percent of the votes cast in its favor.
Against Me! is an American punk rock band formed in Naples, Florida in 1997 by singer and guitarist Tom Gabel. Since 2002 the band's lineup has also included guitarist James Bowman and bassist Andrew Seward; current drummer Jay Weinberg joined in 2010. After releasing three studio albums through independent record labels, Against Me! moved to Sire Records for 2007's New Wave, which reached no. 57 on the Billboard 200. Their fifth and most recent album, 2010's White Crosses, was their most successful, reaching no. 34. In 2011 the band launched their own record label, Total Treble Music, through which they plan to release future albums. In 2012 Gabel publicly came out as transgender, with plans to begin a medical process to live as a woman and eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace while continuing to front Against Me!. The first album expected to feature Laura Jane Grace as frontwoman is Transgender Dysphoria Blues.
Against Me! was formed in 1997 by singer/guitarist Tom Gabel as a solo act, occasionally performing with backing musicians. The first Against Me! release was an eponymously-titled 1997 cassette demo. With the addition of drummer Kevin Mahon, a second demo, Vivida Vis! (1998), was released in limited numbers by Misanthrope Records. The band's first EP, Against Me!, was released in 2000 through Crasshole Records. Their first widely-distributed release was the EP Crime as Forgiven by Against Me! (2001), released by Plan-It-X Records and Gabel's own Sabot Productions. A third EP, an eponymously-titled acoustic recording by Gabel and bassist Dustin Fridkin, was released later that year.

Tonight we sat the stars
Were gone.
Searched for a feeling.
So hard to hold on to the things that mean so much.
Burned himself for you.
Burned for your lies.
From now on it will be different.
Right now is everything.
Hold on to right now.
[Instrumental]
One more bottle cap. off. off. off.
What are we doing but running away?
To a place that's better, darker, and wetter.
Where hearts don't pound.
Changing scenery to keep our muscles from cramping.
It's all moving too fast.
To notice what's wrong. white washed.
Where did this go wrong? We run.
Make us question. We run.
Swords from bottle caps.
Why can't we ever pull it together?
Pull each other together and scream.
This is it! I know. We have done it.
Wouldn't it be nice if life were more alive.
So here I am. Again. Alone.
The light is broken. Too hard to see the page.
I broke it. I broke it.
Too tired to read. Too awake to sleep.
All the time. All the time to think.
How did I find myself here again?
There are times. When I dream of this.
But not here. Not here.
This is success. This is how it feels.
No one knows.
I've succeeded in killing it. This is success.
This is how it feels. It's numb. It's cold.
Where are you now
Promises of forever.
The talk of future fable is all I've ever known.
Where are you now.
You promised forever.
The places and names I will never forget.
A countdown to endings.
A broken contract.
In saved endearing letters and tired conversation.
A countdown to endings.
This contract can break hearts.
The places and names I can never forget.
Never lost hope.
I've found you now.
My forever today.
Antiquated towards achievement blame liaison the
souls of the workers would they not feel
the burden of woes had the tyrannous
not placed it there reform decay now or
never show me the way now or never
reform decay modernization has sealed
our fate for a century the marriage of
government and gave birth to dysfunction
of industry where in notions of equality
were controlled wage slaves are
maintenance of this struggle for change
take it back attack attack the new battle
hymn cry realize your time choose your
path I've seen the pressures of time I've
Wouldn't it be nice if life were more alive.
I don't blame you.
You only make the tools for their trade.
But if I give you a mirror,
Can you tell me what you have really made?
Perpetuating circle of fear and consumption
To keep us bound and blind.
We are all afraid of the things,
That we will never see.
Construction. To makes us all believe.
Construction. Turn it off.
We scream. Remember the fate of Deir Yassin.
But we're always the first to forget.
This bomb we call progress.
This bomb is like us men.
Just another form of forced submission.
We are all afraid of the things, that we will never see.
Grand, creative, construction
to make us all believe.
Turn it off! Turn it off!
Lets stop and cross our fingers.
I've only heard one in a million words.
One of a thousand lives that should have never been lost.
In easy answers, in liars we trust.
There are no victims.
Fact will never be fed.
The truth can be purchased.
To silenced hearts.
For silenced minds.
Burn the leader.
(hook)
I'ma take you back, take take you back
I'ma take you back, take take you back
I'ma take you back, take take you back
I'ma take you back, take take you back (W-W-W-Way Back!)
I'ma take you back, take take you back
I'ma take you back, take take you back
See, 'cause it's twisted..
In the future, scientists will prove that we never even existed
[Verse One]
I got lectured once while eating breakfast for lunch
Said dad to me "Reality is nothing but a collective hunch
Whatever you want the truth to be, simply fool the masses
Attack them mentally with tools of power like the Masters
Get em in elementary school and college classes
Eventually you'll overrule their cowardly asses
Don't worry about society, they're all horrible bastards"
With this knowledge I blast kids. stay dark like Howard's glasses
I'm "Stern!" plus I rule with an iron fist
With no concern, it's so cruel, where did I learn this?
It's in my gene pool. For permanent bliss
It seems cool, only if you suffer from eternal ignorance
Internal innocence rejects external filth. Hurdle the guilt
My ancestors left. Dress with a traditional kilt
Curdled milk that's under suspicion will get spilt
Ain't no use crying. Who's lying about the empire I built?
Another self proclaimed historian
With Einstein as his passenger, and a flux capacitor in his Delorean
Rewrote my past, taught me sin
When we spoke at last he caught me in the chin
There was no need to ask, I know he fought me to win
My broken task is born again, let a new war begin
I think he saw me grin. Played my ass like a sucka
Turned that brunch between me and my father into our last supper
[Chorus]
He'll take us back, take take us back
He'll take us back, take take us back (Take us back back!)
He'll take us back, take take us back
He'll take us back, take take us back (W-W-W-Way Back!)
See, 'cause it's twisted..
In the future, scientists will prove that we never even existed
[Verse Two]
So now I'm orphaned into this world of a rewritten past
Where they force my girl to clean and force me to sit in class
The teacher laughs as he preaches math, beats me with a staff
Because the text we read expects us to bleed each paragraph
I speed through the chapter fast. My prospectful wife
Hangs her pride at half mast, force fed domestic life
Is giving her a fat ass...she can't eat no more
"We'll see who laughs last" is what she speaks so sure
as she sweeps the floor
Her bare feet are sore. I'd massage her toes
But she's way too busy doing dirty laundry and washing my clothes
This bastard ass took us back to the dark ages
My heart races. He's got 1 out of 3 blacks locked in cages
Sage is heading for the mic, but they blocked the stages
Dopes took his notebook, said "Don't look!" as they blotched the page
Ignoramuses must have "idio-dildos" stuck up in their anuses
Dominatrixes explain how pleasurable of a pain this is
I ain't with this game of his.I'm looking for a loophole
Just because you look the part, don't mean you can play, ask Manute Bol
My absolute role is to save whatever is left of me
The last of my true soul, so I dress up like the referee
To get the coach on every bench pissed
They approach me with a clenched fist
So I throw up their past lives and say, "Catch this!"
They get the drift, but fans rush the court
Propaganda programs they hold in their hands
brain washed and flushed their thought
Now it's a blood sport. My girl ain't with this strange land
She was fronting like a cheerleader as she figured out the game plan
Made peeks at play sheets, memorized them like the Rain Man
Conducted her own brain scan, then reversed the chain of command
"She learned the formulas?" The story is unraveling
She seduced Einstein by dressing up like Marilyn..
Monroe. now she's got a Manson look in her eyes
And a grin that's stretching so wide.damn, son, I'm petrified!
[Chorus]
She'll take us back, take take us back
She'll take us back, take take us back (Take us back back!)
She'll take us back, take take us back
She'll take us back, take take us back(W-W-W-Way Back!)
See, 'cause it's twisted..
Old, diseased, and weak
forced to break the promise you could never keep.
Broken, tired, animal you will never be me.
There will be no more always and forever.
Only secure, hopeless lives.
It would make me sick.
This is not a movie.
And there it is. Behind the patriotic soundtrack.
This is not a movie.
And there it is. Behind the patriotic soundtrack.
It's the sound Of screaming.
It's the sound of dying.
Everyone. Sit down.
The movie is starting.
Everyone. Sit down.
It's called "Never Ask Why".
We have our tragedy. They have theirs.
One more bottle cap. off. off. off.
What are we doing but running away?

Where hearts don't pound.
Changing scenery to keep our muscles from cramping.

Wouldn't it be nice if life were more alive.
When seeing isn't what believing is.
no the starving
know nothing of your chances.
The trusting have had enough.
Last breath of a fading few.
Swell the lies to tease the truth.
Take this for what it is.
Before birthdays lose meaning.
Before the unmoving depression that a stagnant life assures.
Begins to take form.
Before I lost patience with hinting
At your last hope.
Roll your eyes and run.
The world will poke them out.
This is the easy way.
An empty look at a sober tear has put the
Hope for you in the unaware.
Taking the sickness.
From my thoughts.
And the thinking.
Out of my head.
You can't see through this.
Sheet of alcohol.
I'm so easy.
It makes me sick.
To believe we know each other.
It makes us sick. To believe.
I'm fake. I'm easy.
