Iranian major general Soleimani supervises Iraqis in retaking Tikrit

The Iraqi army, backed by volunteer forces, has launched a large-scale military operation to retake the strategic city of Tikrit in Salahuddin province from ISIL terrorists. Government forces are attacking the city from different locations, backed by artillery and airstrikes by Iraqi fighter jets. Troops have not entered Tikrit yet. They've already managed to liberate several districts around the city. A security source says volunteer forces have killed an ISIL commander in Himren region, south of the city. Tikrit lies on the road connecting Baghdad and Mosul. Its liberation will help Iraqi forces have a major supply link for any future operation to recapture Mosul. In the capital Baghdad, demonstrators called on Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to dissolve the parliament and fire quote-corrupt officials. They blame the service crisis on incompetence among authorities. Frequent power outages often leave Iraqis without electricity for much of the day at a time when summer temperatures push into 50 degrees Celsius. Similar protests took place in Basra, Najaf, Karbala and some other cities. Ok, after all the colorful comments that this video has been receiving I think I should clarify a few things, or at least offer the back story. These guys that you see here are in fact detainees that were held and questioned by the Rangers you see here. Now in my job as a crew chief I am not often informed of what exactly we might be doing, so I thought we were taking them to an Iraqi jail. Turns out it was a catch and release. Not pictured here is a town literally about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile down the road we landed on. This town was where these particular gentleman were from. That is why they look so happy when they take the blindfolds off. If you are wondering why they must be blindfolded you need to think of the aspect of giving a suspected terrorist a birds eye view of our bases or operations. That is simple logic if you are one of us, but just thought I'd throw that in. Even though we may have been releasing them doesn't mean we trust them. You never know with a war like that. They just couldn't prove anything that time. Happens all the time in our legal system too. Next, we did not leave them out in the middle of the desert, and we did give them water, even though there was in fact, a town a 1/4 to 1/2 mile down the road. Finally, the reason we took off in a hurry was because a very large group of people were approaching the helicopter from the nose, and were within a hundred yards or so when we finally got these guys sorted out. It's not my fault if the guys you see get blasted by sand didn't want to move. That is all.

Nicholas Slatten was convicted of murder last year and sentence on Monday to life in prison. Three other former Blackwater guards, convicted of manslaughter in the killings, were also sentenced to 30 years each. The incident happened in 2007 when a convoy was trying to clear a path for US diplomats in Baghdad. The four guards opened fire with machine guns and grenade launchers on the unarmed Iraqi civilians, including women and children. At least 17 Iraqis were also injured. Since then Blackwater has been sold and renamed several times. It is now called Academi.
