The freight trains especially require High Horse Powered Locomotives to work efficiently in these terrains, most of the freight trains here are operated by EMD's either Single or Double depending on the load they need to carry for sufficient braking and to avoid Wheel slips, never the less ALCo's still do wonders.
Hope you enjoy watching this video.

South India is the area encompassing India's states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu as well as the union territories of Lakshadweep and Pondicherry, occupying 19.31% of area. South India lies in the peninsular Deccan Plateau and is bounded by the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal in the west, south and east respectively. The geography of the region is diverse, encompassing two mountain ranges — the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats and a plateau heartland. Godavari, Krishna, Tungabhadra and Kaveri rivers are important non-perennial sources of water. Inhabitants of South India are referred to as South Indians. A majority of South Indians speak one of the five Dravidian languages — Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Tulu. During its history, a number of dynastic kingdoms ruled over parts of South India whose invasions across southern and southeastern Asia impacted the history and cultures of modern nation-states such as Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. The region was colonised by Britain and gradually incorporated into the British Empire.
After experiencing fluctuations in the decades immediately after Indian independence, the economies of South Indian states have registered higher than national average decadal growth over the past three decades. While South Indian states have improved in some socio-economic metrices, economic disparity, illiteracy and poverty continue to affect the region much like the rest of the country. Agriculture is the single largest contributor to the regional net domestic product, while Information technology (IT) is a rapidly growing industry. Literary and architectural styles, evolved over two thousand years, differ from other parts of the country. Politics in southern India is dominated by smaller regional political parties rather than by national political parties.
South India ranks the highest in terms of social and economic development in areas such as fertility rate and infrastructure; the fertility rate of South India is 1.9, the lowest of all regions in India.

The Shivanasamudra Falls is on the Kaveri River after the river has wound its way through the rocks and ravines of the Deccan Plateau and drops off to form waterfalls. The island town of Shivanasamudra divides the river into twin waterfalls. This creates the fourth largest island in the rivers course. A group of ancient temples are located here and there likely was a village.
This is a segmented waterfall. Segmented waterfalls occur where the water flow is broken into two or more channels before dropping over a cliff, resulting in multiple side by side waterfalls. It has an average width of 305 meters, a height of 98 m, and an average volume

It has an average width of 305 meters, a height of 98 m, and an average volume of 934 cubic meters / sec. The maximum recorded volume is 18,887 cubic meters / sec. It is a perennial waterfall. The time of best flow are the monsoon season of July to October.

Golkonda fort is one of the most famous and the biggest fortress in the Deccan plateau of India. Golconda Fort in the city of Hyderabad, India
Built during Qutb Shahi Kingdom. The fort eventually became known as Golla Konda, which in Tegulu meant Shepherd’s Hill. The area eventually became a heated battleground between three kingdoms, finally culminating in the victory of the Islamic Bahmani Sultanate and the fort became a capital of a major province of the Sultanate. When Quli Qutub Shah declared his independence from the Bahmani Sultanate in 1518, the Qutub Shahi Dynasty arose and Golconda became its seat of power. Over the next couple of decades, successive Qutub Shahi kings expanded the mud fort into a massive and expansive fort of granite, with a circumference that extended to around 5 kilometers. The fort remained to be the dynasty’s capital until it was moved to Hyderabad in 1590. The fort was then expanded to have a 10-kilometer outer wall that enclosed the city. Some historians claim that Golconda Fort is about 2000 years old. Golconda kings spent millions of rupees upon the fort for the command of the Deccan. Golconda fort is on an isolated granite hill and rises in splendour about 400 feet above surrounding plain. The walls and bastions were built of large blocks of masonry, some of them weighing several tons. There are eight darwazas or gates in the outer wall. The gates were studded with iron spikes and various other devices which were intended to prevent elephants from charging at them. Within the walls of the fort, scattered in all directions, are a number of old buildings, mosques and places of historical and architectural interest. Built on a 400 ft. high hill with a circumference of 7 km of the fort wall containing 8 gates and 87 bastions each 50-60 feet high.
The state was located in Southern India on the Deccan Plateau. The Nizam [King] was one of the richest men alive at the time, his wealth numbering in the hundreds of millions.

The history of Buddhism is the story of a great quest of humankind - a quest to leave behind the desires and attachments of the material world, a quest to attain the peace which can only be found within. The Deccan Plateau in India is one of the oldest centres of civilisation in the ancient world and one of the greatest lands of the development of Buddhism, of the early Theravada kind, and also of the later Mahayana and Vajrayana orders. The art of both the Western and Eastern Deccan reflects the gentlest and noblest thoughts eve

The Karnataka Express was introduced in the late 1970s, linking the national capital of New Delhi with Bangalore, the state capital of Karnataka. The train at present covers the 2,400 km journey in around 40 hours, cutting across six states and through the Deccan Plateau. The 24-coacher is powered by an electric locomotive till Manmad, after which two diesel locomotives take over for the remainder of the journey till Bangalore
This compilation contains the second part of the 2,400 km journey of this legendary train, covering the diesel-hauled portion. At Manmad, we have a change of traction from electric to diesel; a combination of WDM2 and WDM3 twin Alcos now take over from the Itarsi WAP4 and chug into the Deccan Plateau. We cross the rugged hills around the Ankai area and cruise across the Godavari river. The twin Alcos merrily belch smoke as they maintain a steady pace of around 90-100 kmph through the sugarcane fields of the Deccan zone. We enter Ahmadnagar as dusk falls and subsequently, there are a couple of crossings with Pune Alco hauled expresses before we enter Daund.
The next morning, we are in Andhra Pradesh and are greeted by a wonderful sunrise prior to Guntakal. At Gooty, we veer away from the Renigunta lines via a 180 degree horseshoe curve, featuring some excellent notching, chugging, smoking and acceleration, and head towards Anantapur and Dharmavaram.
The landscape becomes incredible after Dharmavaram with the occasional hills become a more regular feature. Prior to Prasanti Nilayam, we cross a small tunnel and the landscape keeps getting better after this stretch, right till the outskirts of Bangalore. The main highlight of this stretch is undoubtedly the Makalidurga Ghats, 70 km prior to Bangalore, perched at an elevation of 2,700 feet, featuring a fantastic combination of arid rocks, and green shrubs, overlooked by small grey monsoon clouds. The twin diesels merrily cruise through this stretch at around 75-80 kmph, negotiated a number of sharp curves.

Pune (IPA: [puɳe] English pronunciation: /ˈpuːnə/;[5][6][7][8]) is the ninth-most populous city in India and the second largest in the state of Maharashtra after the state capital city of Mumbai.
It is situated 560 metres (1,837 feet) above sea level on the Deccan plateau, on the right bank of the Mutha river.[9] Pune city is the administrative headquarters of Pune district and was once the centre of power of the Maratha Empire.
In the 18th century, Pune became the political centre of the Indian subcontinent, as the seat of Peshwas who were the prime ministers of the Maratha Empire.[10]
Pune is considered the cultural capital of Maharashtra.[11] Since the 1950s and 1960s, Pune has had traditional old-economy industries which continue to grow today. Furthermore, the city is also known for manufacturing and automobiles, as well as government and private sector research institutes for information technology (IT) education, management and training, that attract migrants, students, and professionals from India, South East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Pune is also one of the fastest growing cities in the Asia-Pacific region. The ‘Mercer 2015 Quality of Living rankings’ evaluated local living conditions in more than 440 cities around the world where Pune ranked at 145, second in India after Hyderabad(138).[12] It also highlights Pune among evolving business centers and emerging 9 cities around the world with citation "Hosts IT and automotive companies" [13]
The name Pune is derived (Nehal)from Modi Puṇyanagari (पुण्यनगरी) (City of Virtue). The oldest reference to this name was found on a Rashtrakuta Dynasty copper plate dated 937 C.E., which refers to the town as Punya-Vishaya or (पुण्य – विष्य).[14]
By the 13th century, it had come to be known as Punawadi (पुनवडी).[15]
The name 'Poona' was probably changed to 'Pune' in 1977 (according to the minute book of The Empress Garden)
Copper plates dated 858 AD and 868 AD show that by the 8th century an agricultural settlement known as Punnaka existed where Pune is today. The plates indicate that this region was ruled by the Rashtrakuta dynasty. The Pataleshwar rock-cut temple complex was built during this era.
Pune was part of the Seuna Yadavas of Devagiri from the 9th century to 1327. In 1595, Maloji Raje Bhosale was appointed the jagirdar of Pune by the Mughal Empire.[14] Pune was ruled by the Ahmadnagar Sultanate until it was annexed by the Mughals in the 17th century.
Maratha rule[edit]
Pune was part of the Jagir (Fiefdom) granted to Maloji Bhosale in 1599 for his services to the Nizamshahi of Ahmadnagar. His grandson, Shivaji, the founder of Maratha Empire, was born on Shivneri fort not far from Pune. Shivaji was brought up by his mother in Pune. Pune changed hands a few times between the Mughals and the Marathas in the period of 1660 to 1705. When Chhatrapati Shahu succeeded to the Maratha throne in 1707, he decided on Satara as his capital but his chief administrators, the Peshwa and the real power behind the throne later on, decided on Pune as their headquarters.

The art of both the Western and Eastern Deccan reflects the gentlest and noblest thoughts ever in the minds of humankind.
Benoy K. Behl is a filmmaker, art historian and photographer known for his tireless and prolific work over the past 31 years. He has taken over 35,000 photographs of Asian monuments and art heritage and made a hundred documentaries on art history. His exhibitions have been warmly received in 24 countries and he holds the Limca Book Record for having travelled to all corners of India. In 2008, National Geographic magazine carried a story about ancient Indian art revealed through Behl’s photography.

The first part of a full journey aboard the legendary Karnataka Express, covering the stretch between New Delhi and Manmad in Maharashtra. We start off from New Delhi at night, and have a blistering encounter with the Bhopal Shatabdi. Next morning, we found ourselves cruising towards Bhopal, past the historic Sanchi stupa. Post Bhopal, we cross a short ghat section enroute Itarsi, and subsequently, the Narmada river.
Courtesy the monsoons, the entire landscape is verdant green and the Itarsi WAP4 in charge of the Karnataka Express maintains a sprightly pace as it race towards Khandwa, past the Indira Sagar Dam. The twin-Alco hauled Pune Patna Express greets us in this stretch, along with a couple of other expresses.
After Khandwa, we race through the Yawal wildlife sanctuary, under a canopy of clouds, and after crossing the Tapti river, enter Bhusawal. The rains ease a bit after Bhusawal and we maintain a fair clip till Manmad, where our locomotive changes from WAP4 to twin Alcos - a WDM2-WDM3A combination from Maula Ali.
Other notable crossings include the Punjab Mail, the Goa Express, and the Pushpak Express.

The Western Ghats or Sahyadri (Tamil: சஹ்யாற்றி, Kannada: ಸಹ್ಯಾದ್ರಿ, Malayalam: സഹ്യാദ്രി, Marathi: सह्याद्री) are a mountain range that runs almost parallel to the western coast of the Indian peninsula, located entirely in India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity in the world. It is sometimes called the Great Escarpment of India. The range runs north to south along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau, and separates the plateau from a narrow coastal plain, called Konkan, along the Arabian Sea. A total of thirty nine properties including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and reserve forests were designated as world heritage sites - twenty in Kerala, ten in Karnataka, five in Tamil Nadu and four in Maharashtra.
The range starts near the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra, south of the Tapti river, and runs approximately 1,600 km (990 mi) through the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu ending at Kanyakumari, at the southern tip of India. These hills cover 160,000 km2 (62,000 sq mi) and form the catchment area for complex riverine drainage systems that drain almost 40% of India. The Western Ghats block southwest monsoon winds from reaching the Deccan Plateau. The average elevation is around 1,200 m (3,900 ft).
The area is one of the world's ten "Hottest biodiversity hotspots" and has over 7,402 species of flowering plants,1814 species of non-flowering plants, 139 mammal species, 508 bird species, 179 amphibian species, 6000 insects species and 290 freshwater fish species; it is likely that many undiscovered species live in the Western Ghats. At least 325 globally threatened species occur in the Western Ghats
The Western Ghats are the mountainous faulted and eroded edge of the Deccan Plateau. Geologic evidence indicates that they were formed during the break-up of the supercontinent of Gondwana some 150 million years ago. Geophysical evidence indicates that the west coast of India came into being somewhere around 100 to 80 mya after it broke away from Madagascar. After the break-up, the western coast of India would have appeared as an abrupt cliff some 1,000 m (3,300 ft) in elevation.
Basalt is the predominant rock found in the hills reaching a thickness of 3 km (2 mi). Other rock types found are charnockites, granite gneiss, khondalites, leptynites, metamorphic gneisses with detached occurrences of crystalline limestone, iron ore, dolerites and anorthosites. Residual laterite and bauxite ores are also found in the southern hills.
The Western Ghats extend from the Satpura Range in the north, go south past Maharashtra, Goa, through Karnataka and into Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Major gaps in the range are the Goa Gap, between the Maharashtra and Karnataka sections, and the Palghat Gap on the Tamil Nadu and Kerala border between the Nilgiri Hills and the Anaimalai Hills.
The mountains intercept the rain-bearing westerly monsoon winds, and are consequently an area of high rainfall, particularly on their western side. The dense forests also contribute to the precipitation of the area by acting as a substrate for condensation of moist rising orographic winds from the sea, and releasing much of the moisture back into the air via transpiration, allowing it to later condense and fall again as rain.
The northern portion of the narrow coastal plain between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea is known as the Konkan Coast or simply Konkan, the central portion is called Kanara and the southern portion is called Malabar region or the Malabar Coast. The foothill region east of the Ghats in Maharashtra is known as Desh, while the eastern foothills of the central Karnataka state is known as Malenadu. The largest city within the mountains is the city of Pune (Poona), in the Desh region on the eastern edge of the range. The Biligirirangan Hills lie at the confluence of the Western and Eastern Ghats.
South of the Palghat Gap are the Anaimalai Hills, located in western Tamil Nadu and Kerala. There are smaller ranges further south, including the Cardamom Hills, then Aryankavu pass, Aralvaimozhi pass near Kanyakumari.
In the southern part of the range is Anamudi peak 2,695 metres (8,842 ft) in Kerala the highest peak in Western Ghats. Chembra Peak 2,100 metres (6,890 ft), Banasura Peak 2,073 metres (6,801 ft), Vellarimala 2,200 metres (7,218 ft) and Agasthya mala 1,868 metres (6,129 ft) are also in Kerala. Doddabetta in the Nilgiri Hills is 2,637 metres (8,652 ft). Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka 1,950 metres (6,398 ft). The Western Ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu is home to many tea and coffee plantations.
