Assistant General Secretary

Organising and Membership Department, London WC1

Commencing Salary £68,091 pa

As the largest teachers union in Europe we have over 330,000 members and are still growing. We are seeking to recruit to the key role of Assistant General Secretary - Organising and Membership who, as a member of the Union's senior management team, supports the General Secretary in the development and production of strategic plans to deliver the Union's key objectives.

Applicants must have senior management and leadership experience within a trade union and be able to demonstrate they are highly articulate with outstanding interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills. A proven collaborative and facilitative approach to leadership is required along with a thorough understanding of the trade union movement, the education service and organising with the ability to develop and implement strategies to recruit, retain and engage members.

Responsibilities include line managing and overseeing:

  • nine regional offices including our Wales office and the support they provide to members and lay structures
  • projects supported by the substantial central organising team
  • disputes where ballots for industrial action may be required
  • the membership and subscriptions section which is responsible for all aspects of membership regulations and subscriptions and the recruitment and retention strategy
  • the substantial union training and professional development programs including the development and delivery of courses
  • affinity partnership relationships and negotiations regarding the membership benefits and services offered to members
  • relationships with partner unions and the development of joint projects

We offer good conditions of service including a commencing salary of £68,091 per annum (which includes London Allowance of £4,935 and non-superannuable luncheon allowance of £912), an annual leave allowance of 31 1/2 days increasing to 36 1/2 days with long service, plus additional days after some bank/public holidays and at Christmas/New Year together with a contributory final salary pension scheme. A car will be provided to the successful applicant to enable them to fulfil the requirements of the role although substantial travel by public transport will also be necessary.
