Theater Talk: "Constellations and Irving Berlin, 'You're Just in Love'."
Actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson (2015 Golden Globe-winner) discuss their roles in the new play "Constellations" and the close-working relationship they have developed while starring in this unconventional and critically acclaimed two-person drama. Also on the program we welcome conductor/arranger Fred Barton, whose next "American Showstoppers" concerts will be devoted to Irving Berlin. Two performers from the show, Tony-winning Broadway favorite, Karen Ziemba and newcomer, Bruce Landry, join Barton to Berlin's masterpiece of counterpoint, "You're Just In Love," which was a big hit for Ethel Merman in Berlin's 1953 musical, “Call Me Madam.”
Taped: 02-13-15
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

Irving Kaufman "Mr. Jazz Himself" (Irving Berlin song) on Columbia A2360
I know a certain young fellow.
Who's filling people with joy.
How would you like to say "hello"
To this remarkable boy?
Ev'ryone's talking about him.
He's been the topic for days.
He's just a winsome gent
With an instrument that plays.
I'd like to have you meet him.
Shake hands with Mister Jazz himself.
He took the saxophone from off the shelf,
And when you hear him play,
You'll say that he's been taking lessons up in Heaven.
That dreamy moan is his own 'riginality.
He knows a strange sort of change in a minor key.
I don't know how he does it.
But when he starts to play the blues,
He's like a messenger of happy news.

Franklyn Baur sings "At Peace with the World" on Columbia 642-D (1926).
The song is by Irving Berlin.
The day is done. The golden sun is sinking behind
the blue, and on its way it seems to say "I`m glad
that my work is through."
Night is drawing near.
Stars will soon appear.
Buildings are beginning to
light up their windows, and as for me--I`m glad to
be at peace with the world with you.
I love to spend the evening at peace with the world with
you. A cozy room, a comfortable chair--and never
a care as long as you`re there.
The day may have its worries, for skies are not always blue, but when
the day has flown, how swe

He also was an owner of the Music Box Theatre on Broadway.
"Alexander's Ragtime Band" sparked an international dance craze in places as far away as Berlin's native Russia, which also "flung itself into the ragtime beat with an abandon bordering on mania." Over the years he was known for writing music and lyrics in the American vernacular: uncomplicated, simple and direct, with his stated aim being to "reach the heart of the average American," whom he saw as the "real soul of the country." In doing so, said Walter Cronkite, at Berlin's 100th birthday tribute, he "helped write the story of this country, capturing the best of who we are and the dreams that shape our lives."
Joe Franklin is an American radio and television personality from New York City, Franklin is credited with hosting the first television talk show. The show began in 1951 on WJZ-TV and moved to WOR-TV from 1962 to 1993. Joe today can be found on Bloomberg Radio where he continues to interview stars. Joe has befriended, met and interviewed over 100,000 American stars. In the webseries "Joe Franklin Remembers" Joe tells us never before heard stories and facts about our favorite stars.

He published his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy", in 1907 and had his first major international hit, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" in 1911.

No one else could ever do it as
My friend, Mister Jazz.
I never cared about discords.
They never cared about me.
But when I listen to his chords,
We both agree to agree.
He's not a Wagner or Verdi.
He's not a classy highbrow.
He's just a boy who has
Put the joy in jazz, and now...
To understand how jazz evolved in its early years, we must trace the emergence of "jass" as a new popular music. It was also called "jas" in the early days. But someone realized early that no music can be call "jass"--if you knock you "j" off, you have the forbidden word "ass."
No jazz was recorded before 1917, but a "jass" craze kicked in during 1917. What was this new music? Listening to Original Dixieland Jass Band discs is required. It also helps to look at sheet music from that era and listen to Tin Pan Alley songs from 1916 through 1918 that describe this new music variously given as jazz, jass, and jas.
The tenor Irving Kaufman (8 February 1890 - 3 January 1976) was probably the most recorded singer between 1914 to 1930, his busiest years being in the late 1920s.
He began his career by making records as a featured singer but in the mid- to late 1920s he also contributed vocal refrains to dance band recordings for many labels. Labels of some band dance records give credit to Irving Kaufman but pseudonyms were also frequently used. On many labels the simple phrase "vocal chorus" is used, with no name given for the singer.
Kaufman reported years later that the major companies gave permission for him to record for smaller firms as long as pseudonyms were used. In fact, Columbia was the only major company to engage Kaufman regularly in the late 1920s (by this time he no longer made Victor records; he did not work for Brunswick aside from making one disc).
Columbia itself employed various pseudonyms for the singer. Kaufman rarely knew at the time he attended a session what name would be used on a label afterwards.
Jim Walsh wrote in the November 1962 issue of Hobbies that when Kaufman's wife would ask, "Well, who are you going to be today--George Beaver, Frank Harris, or who?" the reply was, "What do you care, as long as the check is made out to Irving Kaufman?"
Kaufman said in a 1974 interview published in John and Susan Edwards Harvith's Edison, Musicians, and the Phonograph (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1987), "I had so many different voices that half of the time my wife would say, 'Who are you going to be today?' I would say, 'I won't know until I get to the studio.'"
He was born Isidore Kaufman to Barnett and Lena (Cohn) Kaufman in Syracuse, New York. His father was a Russian immigrant who made a living as a butcher. Irving was the youngest of seven children. His siblings were Jacob ("Jack"), Harry, Charles, Phillip, Ida, and Tillie. Jack and Phillip also made recordings.
Announcing Kaufman as an exclusive Emerson artist, page 44 of the October 1919 issue of Talking Machine World gives this background information: "Irving Kaufman...started his career as an entertainer when only eight years of age. He was then a boy tenor with the 'Jenny Eddy Trio,' and a few years later was the principal soloist with Merrick's Band of fifty pieces, which accompanied the celebrated Forepaugh and Sells Circus." Irving had little formal education. Before reaching his teen years, he joined the Forepaugh and Sells Brothers Circus and sang during acts as a circus band played. A few years later he sang in movie theaters between silent films being screened. In 1911 in New York City he worked as a song plugger for the sheet music giant Leo. Feist, Inc.
His first record was a Blue Amberol cylinder issued in July 1914, "I Love the Ladies" (2328), composed by Jean Schwartz. The May 1914 issue of Edison Phonograph Monthly states, "This record is the first that Irving Kaufman has made for Edison owners. Mr. Kaufman, born in Syracuse, N. Y., comes from a very musical family, being one of the famous 'Kaufman Bros.,' known in vaudeville throughout the United States and Europe."

Franklyn Baur "At Peace with the World" (Irving Berlin song) Columbia 642-D (1926) BIOGRAPHY
The day may have its worries, for skies are not always blue, but when
the day has flown, how sweet to be alone
at peace with the world in the evening with you.
Born in Brooklyn around 1904, the tenor was a church and concert singer around the time he began making records. He gained much recording experience in the last two years of the acoustic era and then enjoyed great popularity in the early years of the microphone, between 1925 and 1930.
His last name, curiously spelled "Bauer" on side A of Brunswick 3381, should be pronounced to rhyme with "power." This is how it is said by Ernest Hare, who emceed with Billy Jones a twelve-inch Columbia Artists promotional disc titled "Studio Stunts" (50038-D) on which Baur, called by Jones the "Viva-tonal velvet-voiced vocalist," sings "Put Your Arms Where They Belong." Side A, with the Baur pronunciation, was cut on September 7, 1926, but the disc was not issued that year. Side B, featuring the Shannon Quartet (with Baur) among other artists, was cut February 18, 1927.
His first solo recording was made for the Victor Talking Machine Company. "If The Rest Of The World Don't Want You" was cut in late 1923 and issued on Victor 19243 on February 22, 1924. Other acoustic-era Victor discs of Baur as a solo artist include "You're in Love With Everyone" (19368), "Deep In My Heart" (19378), and "Heart of a Girl" (19495).
He joined the Shannon Quartet in 1923, replacing Charles Hart, who aspired to be an operatic tenor (Hart cut opera arias for Edison around the time he left the quartet and in late 1923 was engaged by the Chicago Civic Grand Opera Company).
Pseudonyms for Baur include Irving Post (Puritan), George Bronson (Regal and Banner), Sydney or Sidney Mitchell (Oriole and Banner), Joseph Elliott (National Music Lovers), and Ben Litchfield (Radiex, Grey Gull, and related labels--he was sometimes Charles Dale on these labels, a name used for various singers).
In 1926 his own name could be found on nearly a dozen labels--the three major ones (Victor, Columbia, and Brunswick) along with several minor ones.
In his Phonograph Monthly Review interview he stated, "The invention of the electrical process was of greater significance than the average layman realizes. Not only are the finished records incomparably better from every standpoint, but the strain on the singer is immeasurably eased. A record can be made in exactly one-third the time it used to take, and no longer is it necessary for us to nearly crack our throats singing into that hated horn...When the electrical system was first introduced, the recording rooms were difficult to sing in since they were 'deadened,' exactly like the broadcasting studio of today. But the phonograph people have learned some secret the radio does not know, and now the recording studios are no longer absolutely 'dead,' but are resonant and consequently infinitely easier to sing in."
In the mid-1920s he toured Europe with the Revelers, a new name for the Shannon Quartet. He sang regularly with that group until March 25, 1927.
From 1925 through 1927, Baur worked for Brunswick and Columbia nearly as much as for Victor. His final Columbia session was on December 8, 1927. His final Brunswick record, "My Heart Stood Still" (3757) was made in December 1927. He made Victor discs for another two years. He possibly signed a contract making him exclusive to the company.
Baur's recording career ended with a Victor session on December 27, 1929. His final Victor disc, issued in early 1930, featured "With A Song In My Heart" backed by "Through" (22281).
The ambitious Baur passed up further recording opportunities and radio work to study voice and French art song in Paris for over a year. He had a recital at Town Hall in New York City on December 4, 1933, during which he performed works by Debussy and others.
Critical responses were mixed. The disheartened Baur, still in his 20s, retired from his singing career. He never married. He lived with a sister, Mrs. Marie Kuhlman, and at age 46 died in the home in which he had been born.
Obituaries appeared on page 17 of the February 25, 1950, edition of The New York Times and page 63 of the March 1 edition of Variety.
