John Edwards

Johnny Reid "John" Edwards (born June 10, 1953) is an American former politician, who served as a U.S. Senator from North Carolina. He was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 2004, and was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 and 2008.

Edwards defeated incumbent Republican Lauch Faircloth in North Carolina's 1998 Senate election. Towards the end of his single six-year term, he sought the Democratic Party's nomination in the 2004 presidential election. He eventually became the 2004 Democratic candidate for vice president, the running mate of presidential nominee Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts.

Following Kerry's loss to incumbent President George W. Bush, Edwards began working full-time at the One America Committee, a political action committee he established in 2001, and was appointed director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. He was also a consultant for Fortress Investment Group LLC.

John Edwards (painter)

John Edwards (1742 – 31 August 1815) was an English botanist, painter, designer and illustrator, noted for his serial publication, The British Herbal.

After living in London until about 1778, he moved to Surrey, and exhibited with the Royal Academy and the Society of Artists, of which he was a member. Edward also produced textile designs, especially for calico. He published The British Herbal Containing One Hundred Plates of The most beautiful and scarce Flowers and Useful Medicinal Plants in monthly parts between 1769 and 1770, covering exotic and British flowers, using text gathered from various sources, and his own hand-coloured engraved plates.

A Collection of Flowers Drawn after Nature & Disposed in an Ornamental & Picturesque Manner, was his next publishing venture. The imprint dates of the plates show that he had started the project in 1783, completing 79 plates through the 1780s and 1790s. Edwards designed, etched and coloured all the plates himself, thus having complete control of the operation.

John Edwards (Wisconsin politician)

John Edwards (September 15, 1831 – March 11, 1891), a politician, was an American, who was born in England.

Born in England, Edwards moved with his family in 1832 to Hazel Green, Wisconsin. He went to California; he then moved to Port Edwards, Wisconsin, where he was a lumberman. He served as school treasurer, chairman of the Town of Port Edwards, and chairman of the Wood County, Wisconsin Board of Supervisors 1884-1885. He served in the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Democrat 1891. He died in Madison, Wisconsin while still in office.

John Edwards (academic)

John Edwards (also Edwardes) M.D. (fl. 1638) was an English academic, headmaster and physician. He was noted as a Royalist supporter in the University of Oxford.

Life

Edwards was born 27 February 1600, and was educated at Merchant Taylors' School. In 1617 he was elected to a probationary fellowship at St John's College, Oxford. The former President of the college, William Laud, in 1632 recommended Edwards for the head-mastership of Merchant Taylors' School. He resigned this post at the close of 1634, and returned to Oxford.

There Edwards served the office of proctor in the following year. In 1638 he was appointed Sedleian reader of natural philosophy, and proceeded to the degrees of M.B. and M.D. He appears to have resided in college during the troubled times that followed. In 1642, when the First English Civil War broke out, he was, with others, appointed by Convocation to provide accommodation for the troopers sent to Oxford, and procure arms to defend the university.

John Edwards (footballer, born 1875)

John Edwards (born 1875; date of death unknown) was an English footballer, noted for his strength and erratic behaviour, who played as a half-back.

Playing career

Edwards joined Burslem Port Vale of the Football League Second Division in February 1894. He was a regular for the rest of the season, and scored his first two goals in the Football League on 10 March, in a 5–3 win over Lincoln City at Athletic Ground. On 14 April, the final game of the season, he scored Vale's consolation goal in a 2–1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield. After seven appearances in 1894–95, he transferred to Stockport County in November 1894. He returned to Vale in January 1896, but only played three league games before leaving at the end of the season. He spent time with Grays United and Queens Park Rangers, before moving to South West England. He was playing for Cornish side Essa in 1903 when he signed for Plymouth Argyle ahead of the club's first season in professional football. Edwards a reserve right-half during his time with the club and made three appearances in all competitions. He was released in 1904 and returned to Essa.

Andrew Young (political operative)

Andrew Aldridge Young (born March 23, 1966) was a key staff member in the John Edwards 2008 presidential campaign. Young came to prominence via a scandal in which he claimed paternity of Rielle Hunter's child born on February 27, 2008. John Edwards had admitted a past affair with Hunter, but denied paternity of the baby even though Edwards was in fact the father. Young has since renounced that statement, and Edwards publicly admitted paternity on January 21, 2010.

Early life

Young is the son of the late Robert T. Young (1935–2009), a Methodist minister who held positions at churches in Asheville, Boone, Statesville and at Duke Chapel, all in North Carolina; his uncle is the author Perry Deane Young.

Young is a 1984 graduate of C.E. Jordan High School in Durham, North Carolina, where he was a captain of the football team.

Family life

Young married Cheri Pfister Young in 1999 and they have three young children.

Young now resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
