Syrian President Bashar al-Assad touted Russia's military presence in the eastern Mediterranean and around the world during an interview in Damascus, Thursday, saying that it has brought necessary balance to the post-Soviet world.
SOT, Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria (in Arabic): "Concerning Russian presence in different parts of the world, including the Eastern Mediterranean and the Tartous port, it is necessary to create a sort of balance which the world lost after the disintegration of the Soviet Union more than 20 years ago. Part of this existence, as you said, is in Tartous port. As far as we are concerned, the stronger this presence is in our region, the better it is for the region's stability, because the Russian role is important for the stability of the world. Of course, in this context I can say that we certainly welcome any expansion of the Russian presence in the Eastern Mediterranean and specifically on the Syrian shores and in Syrian ports for the same objectives I mentioned. But this of course depends on Russian political and military plans for the deployment of their forces in different regions and different seas and their plans for the expansion of these forces. If the Russian leadership intends to expand Russian presence in the Eastern Mediterranean and in Syria, we certainly welcome such expansion. As to contracts and military cooperation between Syria and Russia, as you know, it is quite old and has been going on for more than six decades, and nothing will change, as far as this cooperation is concerned, in this crisis. There were Russian contracts with Syria signed before the crisis and which started to be implemented after the beginning of the crisis. There are also other new contracts on weapons and military cooperation signed during the crisis and their implementation is ongoing. The nature of these contracts has of course changed given the nature of the battles conducted by the Syrian armed forces in facing the terrorists. But in essence the nature of these relations has not changed and has continued as before.

ÔProfessor ChangÕs very thoughtful and impressively researched study of cybercrime in the greater China region is an invaluable contribution to the information and analyses available in this area. It not only provides important, and heretofore unavailable data, about the incidence and nature of cybercrime in this region, it also offers insightful suggestions into how this problem can most effectively be controlled. It belongs in the library of anyone interested in this area.Õ Ð Susan Brenner, University of Dayton, US ÔEast Asia is a heartland of the variegated scams of the cybercrime problem. Yao Chung ChangÕs book is an innovative application of routine activity theory and regulatory theory to cybercrime prevention across the cybergulf between China and Taiwan. The long march through the scams and across the Taiwan Strait is fascinating. Chang leads us to ponder a wiki cybercrime prevention strategy that might work in such treacherous waters.Õ Ð John Braithwaite, Australian National University ÔCybercriminals exploit weaknesses in cross-border crime cooperation and this is aptly illustrated in the context of relations between Taiwan and the PeopleÕs Republic of China. ChangÕs book shows that even in the climate of mistrust that prevails basic forms of cross-border police cooperation can be achieved. Pragmatism and professional interest in what helps to track elusive computer hackers who have driven a massive surge in the application of malware as ÒcrimewareÓ make good grounds for common cause. This book provides a valuable example of what can be achieved even in the most unpromising of mutual legal assistance situations and opens up for readers the problems and issues confronted by Chinese cyber-police.Õ Ð Roderic Broadhurst, Australian National University ÔVery rarely do you read books that impress these days, but for me Cybercrime in the Greater China Region was one of them. Dr Chang is one of a number of young and exciting international academics who are exploring previously unchartered territory in their quest for new understandings about cybercrime. In his book, Dr Chang manages to locate a global policing problem within the sometimes tense political and cultural constraints of regional policing. For me, Professor Grabosky neatly sums up the strengths of the book in his foreword, I can only endorse them.Õ Ð David S. Wall, University College, Durham University, UK ÔLennonÕs research is an important contribution to the current limited understanding of the cybercrimes and related laws/regulations and incident reporting issues across the straits between the two major economies in the Asia region. A well researched book, and highly informative with practical suggestions for enhancing visibility and cooperation to improve the overall state of cybersecurity in the region, especially between the two economies.Õ Ð Meng-Chow Kang, Cisco Systems, China Cybercrime is a worldwide problem of rapidly increasingly magnitude and, of the countries in the Asia Pacific region, Taiwan and China are suffering most. This timely book discusses the extent and nature of cybercrime in and between Taiwan and China, focussing especially on the prevalence of botnets (collections of computers that have been compromised and used for malicious purposes). The book uses routine activity theory to analyse Chinese and Taiwanese legal responses to cybercrime, and reviews mutual assistance between the two countries as well as discussing third party cooperation. To prevent the spread of cybercrime, the book argues the case for a ÔwikiÕ approach to cybercrime and a feasible pre-warning system. Learning from lessons in infectious disease prevention and from aviation safety reporting, Cybercrime in the Greater China Region proposes a feasible information security incident reporting and response system. Academics, government agency workers, policymakers and those in the information security or legal compliance divisions in public and private sectors will find much to interest them in this timely study.

In September of 2015 I traveled to Driggs, Idaho to visit friends and associates from many years in the dive travel industry. During a rainy but enjoyable four days, my friends scrambled to still show me a treasury of wonderful imagery.
We traveled across the border into Wyoming to explore in Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park.
Along the way we enjoyed thermal sites, herds of wildlife, bubbling pools of boiling water, lakes, rivers waterfalls and even a young grizzly bear
.
We had to drive around quite broadly to find areas where the Sun was briefly shining, and get our material before the next set of clouds and rain moved in.
At certain key times (which you will notice), we succeeded in finding attractions on which the Sun was shining brightly. With the sunlight, colors became far more intense and the thrilling variety of this region's attractions became more obvious.

Regional Connectivity in South-Central Asia
The South-Central Asian region has experienced important changes in the last decade, but anxieties related to the security of post-2014 Afghanistan have obscured how growing communication links, as well as road and rail infrastructures, are transforming the way regional countries connect with Afghanistan and with each other. The growth of Afghanistan's economy, fueled by international assistance and massive reconstruction, has also benefited the region. The web of multilateral and multi-level diplomatic engagement on energy exports, trade, and transportation has created important pathways for greater regional connectivity.
However, tenuous political relations among countries in the region, adverse security environments, and poor infrastructure still remain key challenges to improving this connectivity. The absence of normalized relations between India and Pakistan is the single most important barrier. Regulatory issues and fraught politics have also prevented Pakistan and Afghanistan from exploiting their full trade potential. Besides negatively impacting bilateral trade, bottlenecks in Afghanistan-Pakistan have also prevented greater regional connectivity from occurring in South-Central Asia.
So far, all of the notable initiatives focused on regional connectivity have remained limited to state-to-state cooperation under various multilateral platforms. While such public sector initiatives are important, they often suffer from bureaucratic inertia and can be held hostage by the political relationships among regional states.
The New America Foundation is pleased to welcome Deputy Assistant Secretary Fatema Sumar for a discussion on ways to expand regional connectivity within South-Central Asia and to increase the participation of private-sector partners and businesses within the region.

Wild Animals Documentary 2015: Royal Family - White Lions
These incredible pictures are the first-ever photographs of new-born white lions in the wild, of which just 13 remain
White lions are found in just one place on Earth - the Greater Timbavati Region in South Africa
The new baby cubs are part of a pride that includes six adults, including two fully grown white lionesses
It's not known which male is the father because the cubs are not albinos but owe their colouring to a genetic twist
Every youngster loves to play in the mud, and it’s no different for these rascally lion cubs. But they’re going to give their mum an extra headache, because three of the four new siblings are ultra-rare white lions... and getting the dirt out of their creamy fur is going to require a lot of licking.
These extraordinary pictures are the first-ever photographs of new-born white lions in the wild. They are found in just one place on Earth, the Greater Timbavati region in South Africa, where just 13 remain — and that total includes these cubs.
It’s serious work, being so young, so rare and so cute. But these boisterous characters have got their paws full exploring and practising their play-fighting. So while the older members of the pride keep a watch for danger, the cubs have fun.
The white lion is a rare colour mutation of the Kruger subspecies of lion (Panthera leo krugeri) found in some wildlife reserves in South Africa and in zoos around the world. White lions are not a separate subspecies and are thought to be indigenous to the Timbavati region of South Africa for centuries, although the earliest recorded sighting in this region was in 1938. Regarded as divine by locals, white lions first came to public attention in the 1970s in Chris McBride's book The White Lions of Timbavati. Up until 2009, when the first pride of white lions was reintroduced to the wild, it was widely believed that the white lion could not survive in the wild. It is for this reason that a large part of the population of white lions now reside in zoos.
White lions are not albinos. Their white colour is caused by a recessive trait derived from a less-severe mutation in the same gene that causes albinism, distinct from the gene responsible for white tigers. They vary from blonde to near-white. This coloration does not appear to disadvantage their survival. The white lions of the Global White Lion Protection Trust (GWLPT) have been reintroduced into their natural habitat and have been hunting and breeding successfully without human intervention for a significant amount of time. White lions in South Africa are currently being bred almost exclusively for hunting, but Linda Tucker (the founder of GWLP and author of The Mystery of the White Lions) and her team are trying to change the South African hunting laws.

The area encompassing South and Central Asia represents one of the least economically integrated regions in the world. The U.S. New Silk Road Initiative seeks to promote greater regional connectivity through improved trade and transit, the development of regional energy markets, strengthened customs and border operations, and deeper people-to-people and business relationships. The initiative aims to further economic development and bolster peace and stability in a volatile region. What is the potential for this initiative, and what concrete steps have been taken? What are the challenges and opportunities for Afghanistan and the broader region?

Pakistan faces many security challenges, both within and along its borders. The Taliban maintains a stronghold along the border with Afghanistan; the conflict with India over control of Kashmir has worsened in recent months; and in December Pakistan suffered the deadliest terrorist attack in its history when Pakistani Taliban attacked a school in Peshawar, killing over 100 students.
However, some positive signs of change have emerged. The Pakistani army has ramped up efforts to combat the Taliban and other militants. Relations with Afghanistan have improved since Ashraf Ghani was elected president, promising greater security cooperation along the border. And US Secretary of State John Kerry is working to help India and Pakistan mend relations. Will these efforts be enough to ensure future stability? Pakistan expert Christine Fair will discuss Pakistan’s security concerns and the outlook for this complex region.
Speaker Christine Fair is Assistant Professor of Security Studies Program for the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

Filmed at the Emmanuel Centre on 23rd March 2015.
Among wine lovers, there is no greater divide than that between Burgundy and Bordeaux. These are the world’s most celebrated wine regions, different places producing different styles of wine. What separates them and why the great rivalry?
Many wine buffs believe that Bordeaux is for beginners. It’s a wine that you enjoy before your palate has fully matured and you then move on to the more exquisite pleasures of Burgundy. Bordeaux, say its detractors, is cerebral, like algebra, and is dignified at best. Burgundy, on the other hand, is a wine that makes you dream. As Roald Dahl once wrote, “To drink a Romanée-Conti is like having an orgasm in the mouth and nose at the same time”.
But others disagree. The best red Burgundy is made only from the pinot noir grape and some would argue that there’s not that much going on with it. Bordeaux, its aficionados like to point out, is almost always a blend of grapes that include cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, malbec and petit verdot. It’s a construct, it has detail, you feel more deeply engaged.
And then there’s the business of place – and indeed the business of business. Bordeaux has historically been affluent and attractive to outsiders. In recent times it has become increasingly corporatised and preoccupied with hiking up prices. Burgundy, on the other hand, has always been insular, composed almost entirely of small, family-run farms where the owners roll up their sleeves, get out into the vineyards and make the wines themselves. Why, say Burgundy lovers, would you want to drink a Bordeaux label owned by a man in a Brioni suit, when you could have the romance and authenticity of a wine made by a boot-clad farmer whose family have worked the same plot for generations? But is the ‘soul’ of a wine really so important? Much Bordeaux may nowadays be industrially produced by big business, but isn’t what counts the quality of the wine that comes out of the bottle?
In March 2015 Intelligence Squared brought together Britain’s two giants of wine writing, Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson, to go head to head in a debate on the world’s two greatest wines.
The wines:
Burgundy: Sauvigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru, ‘Aux Serpentiers’ 2010, Jean-Baptiste Lebreuil
Bordeaux: Chateau Lalande Borie, 2009, Saint Julien
