Shabri lives an impoverished lifestyle along with her mother; alcoholic father; and younger brother, Bandya. She is the sole earner in her family and embittered at the manner in which life has treated her. She not only chastises Bandya for spending too much time on the street with a goon, Murad, instead of focusing in his studies but also her father. Things take a turn for the worst when Bandya is arrested by Inspector Khare and tortured in the police station. When Shabri goes to see him, Khare attempts to molest her, but she manages to escape. The next day Bandya is found dead allegedly on the grounds that he tried to escape from police custody. Refusing to believe this 'version', Shabri takes a knife and goes to confront Khare. It is this confrontation that will result in Khare's death with his own service revolver, resulting in a manhunt from Vikhroli to Bhendi Bazar, and she will be compelled to seek Murad's help to go in hiding. But things are only to worsen when a heavily pressured Murad decides to enlist the assistance of Kisnya Bhau, the brother of gangster, Rajdharbhau, resulting in more danger for not only Shabri but also her parents.

An editor asks Deven, a teacher who loves Urdu poetry, to interview poet Nur Shahjehanabadi, an aging whale of a man. Deven goes to Bhopal from Mirpur to meet Nur, of whom he is in awe. He finds him living with feuding wives, visited by sycophants who drink his whisky and eat his food. Deven wants to record Nur for posterity and seeks funds to buy an aged tape recorder, to bribe Safiya, the elder wife, to get Nur into a room at a brothel for a week for the recording, and to feed Nur's pals who show up. Nur's beautiful second wife, Imtiaz, wants to be taken seriously as a poetess. Dever dismisses her and ignores his own wife and child much as Nur does. In the end, what is preserved?

Genellikle,alkol ve tütünü yasaklatan,kahvehaneleri kapatan tebdili kıyafet dolaşarak yasaklara uymayanları acımasızca cezalandıran zalim,baskıcı bir padişah olarak tanınır. Tahta çıktığı dönemin koşullarını göz önüne almadan yapılan bu değerlendirmeler sonucu ne yazık ki tarihte hak ettiği yeri alamamış,ancak baskıcı uygulamaları ve fiziki kuvvetini öne çıkaran hikayelerle tanınmıştır.Aslında O,Revan ve Bağdat Fatihi,ünlü tarihçi İlber Ortaylı’nın deyimiyle ‘’17.yüzyılın en büyük ,Osmanlı’nın son mareşalidir’’. Sultan 4.Murad 26 temmuz 1612 yılında doğdu. Babası Sultan 1.Ahmed, annesi Mahpeyker Kösem Sultan'dır. 1623 yılında henüz 11 yaşındayken tam bir kaos ortamında Osmanlı’nın başına geçmiştir. Babası 1.Ahmet’in vefatı sonrasında tahta geçen amcası 1.Mustafa 2 kez tahttan indirilmiş,Osmanlı tarihinin ilk reformcusu sayılan ağabeyi II. Osman yenilik karşıtlarının tahriki ve yeniçeri ocağı ile ilgili yapmayı planladığı köklü reformlar nedeniyle çıkan isyan sonrasında katledilmişti.Tahta geçtiğinde koskoca imparatorluk büyük bir karışıklık içindeydi. Konumunu kanlı bir şekilde güçlendiren ve menfaatlerine dokunulduğunda padişah bile katledebileceğini gösteren Yeniçerilerin devam eden İsyanları ve uzlaşmaz tavırları, Safevîlerin doğuda Bağdat'ı ele geçirmeleri, Avrupa'daki gelişmeler, Avusturya tehdidi, Celali İsyanları, Anadolu'da bozulan asayiş ve eşkiya terörü ve nihayet ekonomik şartlar çocuk yaştaki padişahı zor durumda bırakıyordu. IV. Murat tahta geçtikten sonra hızlı bir eğitime tabi tutuldu. Yetiştirilmesi sürecinde devleti padişah adına annesi Kösem Sultan yönetmek zorunda kaldı. Kösem Sultan’ın "saltanat naibesi" olarak devleti yönetmesi Osmanlı tarihinde bir ilktir. 10 yıl kadar süren bu dönemde imparatorluk daha da karışarak anarşiye ve büyük iç karışıklıklara sürüklendi. Devleti ne padişah yönetiyordu, ne de padişah naibi sıfatını taşıyan annesi: ipler tamamen yeniçeri ağalarının elinde idi. Sultan 4.Murad çocuk yaşına rağmen tüm gerçeği görüyordu ancak yapabileceği çok fazla bir şey yoktu. Delikanlılık çağlarına geldiğinde harekete geçti.
