Greenland has been inhabited, though not continuously, by Arctic peoples via Canada for 4500–5000 years. In the 10th century, Norsemen settled on the uninhabited southern part of Greenland. In the 13th century, the Inuit arrived, and in the late 15th century the Norse colonies were abandoned. In the early 18th century, contact between Scandinavia and Greenland was re-established and Denmark established rule over Greenland.

Peering into the thousands of frozen layers inside Greenland’s ice sheet is like looking back in time. Each layer provides a record of not only snowfall and melting events, but what the Earth’s climate was like at the dawn of civilization, or during the last ice age, or during an ancient period of warmth similar to the one we are experiencing today. Using radar data from NASA’s Operation IceBridge, scientists have built the first-ever comprehensive map of the layers deep inside the ice sheet.

Rivers of meltwater on Greenland’s ice sheet contribute to rising sea levels
Using satellite and field work after an extreme melt event in Greenland, a UCLA-led study finds that melt-prone areas on its ice sheet develop a remarkably efficient drainage system of stunning blue streams and rivers that carry meltwater into moulins (sinkholes) and ultimately the ocean. However, the team's measurements at the ice's edge show that climate models alone can overestimate the volume of meltwater flowing to the ocean because they fail to account for water storage beneath the ice.

The Lost Vikings
The west coast of Greenland was the site of a thriving Viking colony for hundreds of years. Originally settled by explorers who had bravely sailed across the treacherous North Atlantic from their homes in Scandinavia, the Greenland outpost grew into a farming community of thousands. And then something went terribly wrong. Visitors in the 1400s reported that the inhabitants had simply vanished, leaving no bodies and few clues about what could have happened.
Speculation has long centered on suddenly adverse weather conditions or possibly a war with local Inuit people, but in this documentary, an installment of PBS's Secrets of the Dead set, a

Watch this documentary on Greenland which icebergs are said to be melting. Let's have a look what's happening there.
Here's a bit about Greenland from Wikipedia:
The Greenland ice sheet is a vast body of ice covering 1,710,000 square kilometers, roughly 80% of the surface of Greenland. It is the second largest ice body in the world, after the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The ice sheet is almost 2,400 kilometers long in a north-south direction, and its greatest width is 1,100 kilometers at a latitude of 77°N, near its northern margin. The mean altitude of the ice is 2,135 meters. The thickness is generally more than 2 km and over 3 km at its thickest point. It is not the only ice mass of Greenland – isolated glaciers and small ice caps cover between 76,000 and 100,000 square kilometers around the periphery. Some scientists predict that climate change may be near a "tipping point" where the entire ice sheet will melt in about 2,000 years. If the entire 2,850,000 cubic kilometers of ice were to melt, it would lead to a global sea level rise of 7.2 m.
The Greenland Ice Sheet is also sometimes referred to under the term inland ice, or its Danish equivalent, indlandsis. It is also sometimes referred to as an ice cap. "Ice sheet" is considered the more correct term, as "ice cap" generally refers to less extensive ice masses.
The ice in the current ice sheet is as old as 110,000 years. The presence of ice-rafted sediments in deep-sea cores recovered off of northeast Greenland, in the Fram Strait, and south of Greenland indicated the more or less continuous presence of either an ice sheet or ice sheets covering significant parts of Greenland for the last 18 million years. From just before 11 million years ago to a little after 10 million years ago, the Greenland Ice Sheet appears to have been greatly reduced in size. The Greenland Ice Sheet formed in the middle Miocene by coalescence of ice caps and glaciers. There was an intensification of glaciation during the Late Pliocene.
The weight of the ice has depressed the central area of Greenland; the bedrock surface is near sea level over most of the interior of Greenland, but mountains occur around the periphery, confining the sheet along its margins. If the ice disappeared, Greenland would most probably appear as an archipelago, at least until isostasy lifted the land surface above sea level once again. The ice surface reaches its greatest altitude on two north-south elongated domes, or ridges. The southern dome reaches almost 3,000 metres at latitudes 63°–65°N; the northern dome reaches about 3,290 metres at about latitude 72°N. The crests of both domes are displaced east of the centre line of Greenland. The unconfined ice sheet does not reach the sea along a broad front anywhere in Greenland, so that no large ice shelves occur. The ice margin just reaches the sea, however, in a region of irregular topography in the area of Melville Bay southeast of Thule. Large outlet glaciers, which are restricted tongues of the ice sheet, move through bordering valleys around the periphery of Greenland to calve off into the ocean, producing the numerous icebergs that sometimes occur in North Atlantic shipping lanes. The best known of these outlet glaciers is Jakobshavn Isbræ, which, at its terminus, flows at speeds of 20 to 22 metres or 66 to 72 feet per day.
On the ice sheet, temperatures are generally substantially lower than elsewhere in Greenland. The lowest mean annual temperatures, about −31 °C, occur on the north-central part of the north dome, and temperatures at the crest of the south dome are about −20 °C.
During winter, the ice sheet takes on a clear blue/green color. During summer, the top layer of ice melts leaving pockets of air in the ice that makes it look white. [Wikipedia]

The research, published in the latest issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences can be found here:

The west coast of Greenland was the site of a thriving Viking colony for hundreds of years. Originally settled by explorers who had bravely sailed across the treacherous North Atlantic from their homes in Scandinavia, the Greenland outpost grew into a farming community of thousands. And then something went terribly wrong. Visitors in the 1400s reported that the inhabitants had simply vanished, leaving no bodies and few clues about what could have happened.
Speculation has long centered on suddenly adverse weather conditions or possibly a war with local Inuit people, but in this documentary, an installment of PBS's Secrets of the Dead set, a team of archaeologists, forensic anthropologists, and botanists visit a desolate and remote stretch of the Greenland coast and solve the mystery of the lost Vikings.
The archaeological record, combined with the scant written accounts of how the settlers lived, begin to reveal some surprising evidence. And a complicated story involving a "mini ice age" emerges. The compelling theory indicates that worsening conditions, coupled with strict religious beliefs that kept the Greenland Vikings from adapting by learning the ways of the natives, sealed their fate. This is a captivating look at a little-known mystery. --Robert J. McNamara

Despite being one of the remotest and most inaccessible corners of the planet, Greenland is on the cusp of a vast boom in oil and minerals that may change life for its 60,000 people forever, says Colin Freeman.
It covers an area the size of Western Europe, but has less than the population of an small English town.
All but five per cent of its land mass is covered by snow and ice, and there is no road or rail network at all.

In the summer of 2012, one of the most vital ecosystems on earth, the Greenland ice sheet, experienced a meltdown that alarmed scientists the world over. Greenland is an island encased in ice and it's the world's second largest ice sheet after Antarctica. That summer, ninety-seven percent of the surface ice melted. "Melting Point" is a comprehensive examination of this event. Videographer Snorre Wik shot the footage under tough conditions—hauling around 1,000 pounds of gear by helicopter, by SUV (on Greenland's mostly dirt roads) and out on a thinning ice sheet made treacher

2013 National Emmy Award Nominee: Melting Point Greenland
2013 National Headliners Award First Prize Environmental Reporting:
In the summer of 2012, one of the most vital ecosystems on earth, the Greenland ice sheet, experienced a meltdown that alarmed scientists the world over. Greenland is an island encased in ice and it's the world's second largest ice sheet after Antarctica. That summer, ninety-seven percent of the surface ice melted. "Melting Point" is a comprehensive examination of this event. Videographer Snorre Wik shot the footage under tough conditions—hauling around 1,000 pounds of gear by helicopter, by SUV (on Greenland's mostly dirt roads) and out on a thinning ice sheet made treacherous by the sun. Wik improvised to get the shots he needed—lying on helicopter floors to steady his camera without a gyro-stabilized mount, or holding his DSLR by hand on the dashboard of SUVs. His efforts were both breathtaking and disturbing.
Additionally, Jens Christiansson is responsible for filming the destruction of the Watson River bridge. Marco Tedesco and his team of researchers filmed the moulins and ice cap during the record meltoff.

Since 1893 Hurtigruten has explored the Norwegian coast and the polar waters of remote shores. We are still exploring and introducing new fjords and excursions along the long and rugged Norwegians coast, where 22 of the 34 ports that we call at on a daily basis are north of the Arctic Circle!
Our Explorer ship MS Fram continues the Norwegian tradition of exploring the white areas of our planet, sailing

Greenland is the Melting Point - HD Documentary (1080p)
[Wikipedia]
http://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/nasa-data-peers-into-greenlands-ice-sheet/
Peering into the thousands of frozen layers inside Greenland’s ice sheet is like looking back in time. Each layer provides a record of not only snowfall and melting events, but what the Earth’s climate was like at the dawn of civilization, or during the last ice age, or during an ancient period of warmth similar to the one we are experiencing today. Using radar data from NASA’s Operation IceBridge, scientists have built the first-ever comprehensive map of the layers deep inside the ice sheet.

Rivers of meltwater on Greenland’s ice sheet contribute to rising sea levels
Rivers of meltwater on Greenland’s ice sheet contribute to rising sea levels
Using satellite and field work after an extreme melt event in Greenland, a UCLA-led study finds that melt-prone areas on its ice sheet develop a remarkably efficient drainage system of stunning blue streams and rivers that carry meltwater into moulins (sinkholes) and ultimately the ocean. However, the team's measurements at the ice's edge show that climate models alone can overestimate the volume of meltwater flowing to the ocean because they fail to account for water storage beneath the ice.

We walked down a long promenade Down a winding stair, wide as boulevards Vines and shrubs grew between the steps From the Spanish town to the African sea We drank wine and toasted to the day When she was the queen, before the long decay We drank wine, slept off hangovers Lethargy, decay and forgotten loves We'd awake to the BBC An old English queen on the balcony Wander 'round abandoned consulates An old broken chair on the marble stair And from the roof, see Canary seas The discarded runway of Sidi Ifni We drank wine lying on our backs On the warm tarmac, in a bowl of stars Well, I went down, mostly on my own Till I was alone in that shipwrecked house Through the porthole sea an epiphany I would never leave this place alive I drink gin with the old ex-pats We are broken things, from a broken past And it comes near; but just out of grasp The alchemist words that would bring her back
an old sprig of grass my memories clashed how these days at the grindstone burned with the trash to each on his own help me set out alone to a land of temptations, sleep deprivations to greenland again oh my home waste away like the snow almost gone greenland again oh my home waste away like the snow almost gone like dominoes fall on top of us all pile on heaps of the good life and tan in the moonlight to greenland again oh my home waste away like the snow almost gone greenland again oh my home waste away like the snow almost gone to greenland again oh my home faced away like the snow almost gone greenland again oh my home
fathoms we’ve sunk trenches we’ll wait among the biting cold and makeshift home that we’ve made vessels will rust sunken we’ll stay fear not of growing old else we’ll waste away turn back the hands of time (risk but we have to try) anything for a chance to come alive to return to what once we had called a life peel back these hands of mine (make new what once was dry) and i’ll make suke i never sleep again i’ll be the last one to forget we’re already dead sold our souls to pay our debts take a number alongside the rest turn back the hands of time (risk but we have to try) anything for a chance to come alive to return to what once we had called a life time stops, we don’t breathe a word shell cracks, reflects the choice we made floor leaks, the water rises to our throats pipes burst, we await our fate with the new weight in our chests i’ll see you along the bottom with the new weight in our chests
