Quotes: "I am thankful that both the President and First Lady are still alive but brutally mutilated. I condemn, however, the use of so-called "peacekeeping" forces made up of UN and French forces in the attacks on Abidjan and the presidential palace. It is these forces that have caused countless deaths in this densely populated city of four million people." - - - - - - - "I called for a cease fire and no one responded. This was eight days ago." "I again called for an immediate cease-fire, and no one responded." "And I call on UN, French and Ouattara forces to halt immediately "death squads" roving around the streets of Abidjan "disappearing" supporters of President Gbagbo." "This killing must stop now!" - - - - - - "This is not about the Gbagbos or Cote d'Ivoire, but about the modern day return to French Colonial Imperialism. And this time with the help of the United Nations." - - - - - - - - "President Museveni of Uganda who said yesterday, prior to the capture of the Gbagbos that: 'I have not been happy with the way the UN and International Community, especially the French have responded to the events of the post election Ivory Coast. I desired that it would have been ideal for a thorough Investigation into the alleged election rigging and it be done by a credible and independent body under the African Union leadership and guidance instead of violently forcing Laurent Gbagbo out of power without a hearing. I am not pleased with the way International Community can sanction a situation of blood bath in the domestic affairs of African Countries. I would prefer a peaceful intervention by an African Union committee that would investigate into the matter, give the parties a fair hearing and come out with a workable recommendation that can promote peace and stability in the region. The recommendation would include the possibility of a peaceful and conciliatory settlement towards a power-sharing deal as was done in the case of Kenya and Zimbabwe. At this point, I believe he would be happy to have a team of capable African leaders chosen under the auspices of African Union to work on a peaceful end to the conflict in Ivory Coast. I believe the Africa Union must be given the opportunity to handle the matter in-house. I am of course not pleased with the way the UN and the International Community has directly thrown their weight in support of Alassane Outtara and now recognizing him as president.'" - - - - - - "I have warned the UN and the French on this floor four times in the past week that they would have blood on their hands if they continued supporting the rebel forces of Alassane Ouattara and continued the bombing the capital of Cote d'Ivoire, Abidjan, and did not agree to an immediate cease-fire." - - - - - - - - "I also suggest that the United States step in to help and examine the possibility seeking a place of exile for the Gbagbos outside of Cote d'Ivoire. The U.S. has performed such a role before when in 1986, under the Reagan Administration, Haiti's "Baby Doc" Duvalier was sent into exile in France. This could be an important step towards beginning a process of reconciliation that the people of Cote d'Ivoire so dearly deserve." - - - - - - "Cote d'Ivoire has had a hard enough time trying to break free of the yoke of French colonialism. From the days of President Houphouet-Boigny in 1960 through Bedie in 2000 when Gbagbo was democratically elected. This shadow of colonialism must be lifted not only from Cote d'Ivoire but from all of Africa."

October 8th 2014, Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce “Study on the use of digital currency”, 11th session Background on the “Study on the use of digital currency”: In Canada, the public debate surrounding Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies is currently being formalized as the official “Study on the use of digital currency”, a consultative exercise conducted at the initiative of the Senate of Canada’s Banking, Trade and Commerce committee. Although the Senate of Canada exerts less authority than the House of Commons, its standing committees have proven to be an influential source of expertise and opinion. It also enjoys considerable international attention: according to Stuart Hoegner, general counsel at the Bitcoin Alliance, “no other parliamentary body in the world has publicly canvassed the breadth of materials and opinion that this committee has”.

Napoleon Bonaparte (French: Napoléon Bonaparte puis Napoléon Ier [napoleɔ̃ bɔnɑpaʁt]) (15 August 1769 -- 5 May 1821) was a French military and political leader during the latter stages of the French Revolution. As Napoleon I, he was Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1815. His legal reform, the Napoleonic Code, has been a major influence on many civil law jurisdictions worldwide, but he is best remembered for his role in the wars led against France by a series of coalitions, the so-called Napoleonic Wars. He established hegemony over most of continental Europe and sought to spread the ideals of the French Revolution, while consolidating an imperial monarchy which restored aspects of the deposed ancien régime. Due to his success in these wars, often against numerically superior enemies, he is generally regarded as one of the greatest military commanders of all time. Napoleon was born in Corsica to parents of noble Genoese ancestry, and trained as an artillery officer in mainland France. He rose to prominence under the French First Republic and led successful campaigns against the First and Second Coalitions arrayed against France. In 1799, he staged a coup d'état and installed himself as First Consul; five years later the French Senate proclaimed him emperor. In the first decade of the 19th century, the French Empire under Napoleon engaged in a series of conflicts—the Napoleonic Wars—involving every major European power.

Napoleon Bonaparte (French: Napoléon Bonaparte [napoleɔ̃ bɔnɑpaʁt], Italian: Napoleone Buonaparte; 15 August 1769 -- 5 May 1821) was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the latter stages of the French Revolution and its associated wars in Europe. Due to his success in these wars, often against numerically superior enemies, he is generally regarded as one of the greatest military commanders of all time, and his campaigns are studied at military academies worldwide.[1] Napoleon was born at Ajaccio in Corsica in a family of noble Italian ancestry which had settled Corsica in the 16th century. He trained as an artillery officer in mainland France. He rose to prominence under the French First Republic and led successful campaigns against the First and Second Coalitions arrayed against France. He led a successful invasion of the Italian peninsula. In 1799, he staged a coup d'état and installed himself as First Consul; five years later the French Senate proclaimed him emperor, following a plebiscite in his favour. In the first decade of the 19th century, the French Empire under Napoleon engaged in a series of conflicts—the Napoleonic Wars—that involved every major European power.[1] After a streak of victories, France secured a dominant position in continental Europe, and Napoleon maintained the French sphere of influence through the formation of extensive alliances and the appointment of friends and family members to rule other European countries as French client states. The Peninsular War and 1812 French invasion of Russia marked turning points in Napoleon's fortunes. His Grande Armée was badly damaged in the campaign and never fully recovered. In 1813, the Sixth Coalition defeated his forces at Leipzig; the following year the Coalition invaded France, forced Napoleon to abdicate and exiled him to the island of Elba. Less than a year later, he escaped Elba and returned to power, but was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. Napoleon spent the last six years of his life in confinement by the British on the island of Saint Helena. An autopsy concluded he died of stomach cancer, but there has been some debate about the cause of his death, as some scholars have speculated that he was a victim of arsenic poisoning.

The Senate (French: Sénat) is the upper house of the Parliament of France, presided over by a president.
The Senate enjoys less prominence than the lower house, the directly elected National Assembly; debates in the Senate tend to be less tense and generally enjoy less media coverage.
France's first experience with an upper house was under the Directory from 1795 to 1799, when the Council of Ancients was the upper chamber. There were Senates in both the First and Second Empires (the former being known as the sénat conservateur, the latter as the French Senate), but these were only nominally legislative bodies – technically they were not legislative, but rather advisory bodies on the model of the Roman Senate.
With the Restoration in 1814, a new Chamber of Peers was created, on the model of the British House of Lords. At first it contained hereditary peers, but following the July Revolution of 1830, it became a body to which one was appointed for life. The Second Republic returned to a unicameral system after 1848, but soon after the establishment of the Second French Empire in 1852, a Senate was established as the upper chamber. In the Fourth Republic, the Senate was renamed the Council of the Republic, but its function was largely the same. With the new constitution of the Fifth Republic enforced on 4 October 1958, the older name of Senate was restored.
