With its coastline facing the Adriatic and Ionian seas, its highlands backed upon the elevated Balkan landmass, and the entire country lying at a latitude subject to a variety of weather patterns during the winter and summer seasons, Albania has a high number of climatic regions relative to its landmass. The coastal lowlands have typically Mediterranean climate; the highlands have a Mediterranean continental climate. In both the lowlands and the interior, the weather varies markedly from north to south.
The lowlands have mild winters, averaging about 7 °C (45 °F). Summer temperatures average 24 °C (75 °F). In the southern lowlands, temperatures average about 5 °C (9 °F) higher throughout the year. The difference is greater than 5 °C (9 °F) during the summer and somewhat less during the winter.
Inland temperatures are affected more by differences in elevation than by latitude or any other factor. Low winter temperatures in the mountains are caused by the continental air mass that dominates the weather in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Northerly and northeasterly winds blow much of the time. Average summer temperatures are lower than in the coastal areas and much lower at higher elevations, but daily fluctuations are greater. Daytime maximum temperatures in the interior basins and river valleys are very high, but the nights are almost always cool.
Average precipitation is heavy, a result of the convergence of the prevailing airflow from the Mediterranean Sea and the continental air mass. Because they usually meet at the point where the terrain rises, the heaviest rain falls in the central uplands. Vertical currents initiated when the Mediterranean air is uplifted also cause frequent thunderstorms. Many of these storms are accompanied by high local winds and torrential downpours.
When the continental air mass is weak, Mediterranean winds drop their moisture farther inland. When there is a dominant continental air mass, cold air spills onto the lowland areas, which occurs most frequently in the winter. Because the season's lower temperatures damage olive trees and citrus fruits, groves and orchards are restricted to sheltered places with southern and western exposures, even in areas with high average winter temperatures.
Lowland rainfall averages from 1,000 millimeters (39.4 in) to more than 1,500 millimeters (59.1 in) annually, with the higher levels in the north. Nearly 95% of the rain falls in the winter.
Rainfall in the upland mountain ranges is heavier. Adequate records are not available, and estimates vary widely, but annual averages are probably about 1,800 millimeters (70.9 in) and are as high as 2,550 millimeters (100.4 in) in some northern areas. The western Albanian Alps (valley of Boga) are among the wettest areas in Europe, receiving some 3,100 mm (122.0 in) of rain annually. The seasonal variation is not quite as great in the coastal area.
The higher inland mountains receive less precipitation than the intermediate uplands. Terrain differences cause wide local variations, but the seasonal distribution is the most consistent of any area.
In 2009, an expedition from University of Colorado discovered four small glaciers in the "Cursed" mountains in North Albania. The glaciers are at the relatively low level of 2,000 metres (6,600 ft), almost unique for such a southerly latitude.

Welcome to Albanian, Bienvenu en Albanie, Albania is a small country located between the Balkans and the Mediterranean Sea. Its climate is Mediterranean in the coastal fringe, continental elsewhere.
Tirana is the capital , the city reaching almost one million inhabitants ; Other important cities are Durres (about 190,000 inhabitants), Elbasan and Shkodra each with about 100 000 inhabitants , Vlora ( 95,000 ) , Korce (80 000) and Berat ( 70000 ) .
Albania is a mountainous country (70%) , culminating totaled 2,753 m ( Mount Korab ) . The rest consists of alluvial plains , the terrain is rather poor for agriculture, alternately flooded or dried . The most fertile land is located in the Lake District ( Lake Ohrid, Prespa and Small Prespa Grand ) and some intermediate plates between the plains and the mountains.
The only notable island is that of Sazan which was occupied in turn by various major European powers .
The largest river is the Albanian Drin . Along 335 km , it is one of the few to experience a relatively stable rate all throughout the year. The other rivers are usually almost dry during the summer, even Semani rivers and Vjosa which nevertheless have a length of over 160 km.
The climate is Mediterranean in coastal areas ( winter average: 7 ° ) , and becomes more continental in relief. Rainfall is quite high (1 000 to 1 500 mm annually) , the moist air flows meeting the colder continental air mass , especially during the winter, which is the rainy season.
Natural resources: petroleum , natural gas, coal , chromium, copper , wood, nickel , hydropower potential. Ohrid Lake or Lake Ohrid ( Albanian : Liqeni i Ohrit , Macedonian : Охридско Езеро , Okhridsko Ezero ) is a lake on the southwest border of Macedonia and Albania , he an area of 358 km2. It is the deepest lake in the Balkans (288 m ), but also one of the oldest in the world, with the Titicaca and Baikal [ref. desired ] .
Powered by the Prespa Lake , located southeast through infiltration , it drains the north by the Black Drin , which flows into the Adriatic Sea. It is known for its clear water, which is sometimes transparent to a depth of 22 meters, and its rich and varied fauna , including endemic species.
Its name comes from the town of Ohrid on the shore of the lake. This city is the tourist capital of the Republic of Macedonia, and the lake, surrounded by some beaches and Byzantine monasteries , is one of the biggest attractions of the country. It has also been classified as a World Heritage Site for its outstanding natural character in 1979 and in 1980 , the label has been extended to also classify historical and cultural sites. The territory of Albania was occupied by Greece, Italy and the Ottoman Empire and each group has left its mark on Albanian cuisine.
The main meal of Albanians is lunch, it is usually accompanied by a salad of vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers and olives with olive oil, vinegar and salt. Lunch also includes a main dish of vegetables and meat. The specialties of seafood are also common in the coastal areas of Durres, Vlora and Saranda.

Albania has a total area of 28,748 square kilometres (11,100 square miles). It lies between latitudes 39° and 43° N, and mostly between longitudes 19° and 21° E (a small area lies east of 21°). Albania's coastline length is 476 km (296 mi):240 and extends along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The lowlands of the west face the Adriatic Sea.
The 70% of the country that is mountainous is rugged and often inaccessible from the outside. The highest mountain is Korab situated in the district of Dibër, reaching up to 2,764 metres (9,068 ft). The climate on the coast is typically Mediterranean with mild, wet winters and warm, sunny, and rather dry summers.
Inland conditions vary depending on elevation, but the higher areas above 1,500 m/5,000 ft are rather cold and frequently snowy in winter; here cold conditions with snow may linger into spring. Besides the capital city of Tirana, which has 420,000 inhabitants, the principal cities are Durrës, Korçë, Elbasan, Shkodër, Gjirokastër, Vlorë and Kukës. In Albanian grammar, a word can have indefinite and definite forms, and this also applies to city names: both Tiranë and Tirana, Shkodër and Shkodra are used.
The three largest and deepest tectonic lakes of the Balkan Peninsula are partly located in Albania. Lake Shkodër in the country's northwest has a surface which can vary between 370 km2 (140 sq mi) and 530 km2, out of which one third belongs to Albania and rest to Montenegro. The Albanian shoreline of the lake is 57 km (35 mi). Ohrid Lake is situated in the country's southeast and is shared between Albania and Republic of Macedonia. It has a maximal depth of 289 meters and a variety of unique flora and fauna can be found there, including "living fossils" and many endemic species. Because of its natural and historical value, Ohrid Lake is under the protection of UNESCO. There is also Butrinti Lake which is a small tectonic lake. It is located in the national park of Butrint.

Reshat Mati, 16, knows little of defeat. The world's top-ranked boxer and kickboxer in his age group, Reshat also competes in six other disciplines. And many MMA types on the internet regard this high school junior from Staten Island as the best pound for pound 16-year-old fighter on the planet.
"I try not to get it stuck in my head," he said.
Reshat's father, Adrian, grew up in Albania.
"We had nothing else: fighting and soccer," Adrian said. "It's in our blood, actually."
According to Mati family lore, Reshat threw his earliest jabs from inside a crib earning him his first nickname: "Baby Punch."
"He was punching everything he sees," Adrian said.
"Now they call me the Albanian Bear," Reshat said.

Albania Travel Video Guide. Awaking Sleeping Beauty--like in the 1990s from her hardline communist isolation, Albania was a stranger from another time. Her cities weren't choked by car fumes, her beaches were unspoilt by mass tourism, her long-suffering people were a little dazed and confused. While things have changed a lot since then, this ancient land still offers something increasingly rare in Europe these days -- a glance into a culture that is all its own. Raised on a diet of separation and hardship, Albania is distinctly Albanian.
You'll continue with Albania Travel Video Guide to find beautiful pristine beaches on parts of the Ionia

Take a tour of Archaeological City of Butrint in Albania -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The Archaelogical City of Butrint in Albania resides on the Greek border.
Butrint once served as a port from the Hellenistic era to the Ottoman Empire because of its ideal position in an inlet of the Adriatic Sea.
Italian archaeologists first began excavations in 1928 and the uncovering of the ancient city soon followed.
The wondrous site has been sensitive to the turmoil which has surrounded it, and was especially at risk during political conflict in 1997.

First day in Tirana and I make a noob ATM mistake and forget the currency exchange which results in me taking out $1300US instead of $130US. Other than that, Alex and I roam the streets giving you an idea of what it's like, do some shopping and regular admin stuff the day after you arrive and have a wild night out on the town.
Tirana is cool, I really like Tirana, Albania.

You'll continue with Albania Travel Video Guide to find beautiful pristine beaches on parts of the Ionian Coast (try the charming town of Saranda, fascinating classical sites like ancient Berat, and dramatic mountain citadels, but the mad traffic of Tirana is symptomatic of a bustling, bright city shrugging off its Stalinist grey patina. Squat toilets are no longer the norm and you can even sip cocktails at hip bars while listening to rock bands. Meanwhile, Northern Albania keeps the country's reputation as a wild frontier alive and well, with bleak mountains and the occasional blood feud.

In the eyes of most, Albania is by far the most mysterious country in Europe. So what is it actually like to be there? After years of isolation, it's not the easiest thing in the world to get to Tirane (the capital), but going there is part of the adventure.

Albania Travel Guide - Visiting the Archaeological City of Butrint
Located atop a hill, the site contains incredible views of the surrounding Butrint National Park.
The mysteries of the Archaeological City of Butrint are sure to inspire all who visit.

After our departure from the port of Corfu we travel along the Albanian shores and we will approach the port of Saranda city. Once our passports are checked the local tourist guide will introduce you to the ancient city of Saranda. An additional guided tour is available for those who wish to enjoy a 20km tour by coach of the south coast with its virgin shores and scattered islands. Moving on from the mainland we pass small picturesque villages, endless fertile plains leading to a great lake.
The highlight of your day will be the excursion to Butrint - designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1997. Over the centuries, the ancient town had disappeared under layers of silt and vegetation - but archaeologists have uncovered one of the best remains of a working town in the Mediterranean. At the edge of the lake where the ancient city of Vouthrota is situated, with its well maintained archaeological monuments and ancient theatre, the visitor is taken 2500 years back in time to the 3rd century A.D. The ancient gymnasium, the Roman ablutions, the ancient temple with the priceless mosaic floor and the enormous stone walls will take you back to a time not known to man. Upon reaching the top of the hill lies the castle of Ali Passa, an oddment of the Ottoman Empire, from this position we have a panoramic view of the Ancient City, the lake and the vast plains, a breathtaking sight. Upon our return to the city of Saranda lunch is served. The afternoon allows for a tour of the town, until our departure from the land caught up in time.

About the Speech:
On the publication of the European Commission’s annual Enlargement Package on 8 October 2014, Commissioner Štefan Füle recalled the commitment made five years ago to “strengthen the credibility and transformative power of enlargement policy”. The prolonged economic crisis over the intervening period has created significant challenges on both of these fronts, by accelerating ‘enlargement fatigue’ in the EU and even diminishing the attractiveness of accession for some potential members. In this context, Erwan Fouéré analysed the European Commission’s 2014 enlargement progress reports, which consider the general situation as w

As a gift to THE PEOPLE, Croatian and EU Parliament, G7, Vatican, croatian Mrs. President and media!
Special to: Minister Ivan Vrdoljak, Barbara Dorić, acting President of the Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency, and representatives of the Croatian government:
We have recently become aware of Croatia’s first granting of offshore leases in and around the Adriatic coast of the country. The area to be opened to oil and gas companies covers a total of roughly 37,000 square kilometers divided into 29 blocks. No less than thirty international oil and gas firms will be involved in a massive drilling program that will irreversibly change the Croatian coast for decades to come. The plan calls for a seven – year exploration phase followed by a twenty-five year production phase. And that will just be the beginning... . The time to stop them is now!
The people who live along the coast of Croatia stand to gain very little in return for the irreversible transformation of their coastline into an industrialized oil-producing site, since the oil will be sold on the open market leaving behind eyesores and a contaminated environment. One just has to look at nearby Italy, and the disasters that oil and gas have caused to cities like Gela, Falconara, Priolo, Augusta, Manfredonia, Porto Marghera, locations that could have had a sustainable, tourism or tertiary economy had they not chosen to develop their scares oil and gas resources and are now beyond environmental repair. These locations must now deal with skyrocketing cancer rates, high poverty and unemployment levels and an unhealthy environment. On a larger scale, extracting and burning fossil fuels is one of the main causes of climate change. About 400,000 people gathered in New York in late September asking for change. Our Earth is warming, average temperatures are increasing, ice caps are melting and sea levels are rising. The choices we make today will affect our children and our children’s children. We also urge Croatian officials to promote a dialogue with other countries that share borders with the Adriatic, and that together Italy, Croatia, Slovenia and Albania, may find a constructive resolution to ban offshore drilling within the entire Adriatic sea, to save its shores, its marine life and its biodiversity for future generations. So please, for the benefit of the people of Croatia and of the entire planet, do not go forward with the destruction of the Adriatic for what will certainly be short-term gain and long term foolishness.

In this context, Erwan Fouéré analysed the European Commission’s 2014 enlargement progress reports, which consider the general situation as well as the specific cases of Montenegro, Serbia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Turkey.
About the Speaker:
Erwan Fouéré is Associate Senior Research Fellow at the Brussels-based Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS). During the Irish Chairmanship of the OSCE in 2012, he served as Special Representative for the frozen conflict in Transdniestria. Previously, he spent his career in the EU institutions, occupying senior positions in Brussels as well as in EU delegations in third countries including in the Balkans, South Africa, Venezuela, Mexico and Cuba.

Over a third of the territory of Albania – about 10,000 square kilometres (3,861 square miles);– is forested and the country is very rich in flora. About 3,000 different species of plants grow in Albania, many of which are used for medicinal purposes. Phytogeographically, Albania belongs to the Boreal Kingdom, the Mediterranean Region and the Illyrian province of the Circumboreal Region. Coastal regions and lowlands have typical Mediterranean macchia vegetation, whereas oak forests and vegetation are found on higher elevations. Vast forests of black pine, beech and fir are found on higher mountains and alpine grasslands grow at elevations above 1800 meters.
According to the World Wide Fund for Nature and Digital Map of European Ecological Regions by the European Environment Agency, the territory of Albania can be subdivided into three ecoregions: the Illyrian deciduous forests, Pindus Mountains mixed forests and Dinaric Alpine mixed forests. The forests are home to a wide range of mammals, including wolves, bears, wild boars and chamois. Lynx, wildcats, pine martens and polecats are rare, but survive in some parts of the country.
There are around 760 vertebrate species found so far in Albania. Among these there are over 350 bird species, 330 freshwater and marine fish and 80 mammal species. There are some 91 globally threatened species found within the country, among which the Dalmatian pelican, Pygmy cormorant, and the European sea sturgeon. Rocky coastal regions in the south provide good habitats for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal.
Some of the most significant bird species found in the country include the golden eagle – known as the national symbol of Albania – vulture species, capercaillie and numerous waterfowl. The Albanian forests still maintain significant communities of large mammals such as the brown bear, gray wolf, chamois and wild boar. The north and eastern mountains of the country are home to the last remaining Balkan Lynx – a critically endangered population of the Eurasian lynx.

The Climate Of Albania
The Climate Of Albania

TOURISM ALBANIA
TOURISM ALBANIA

The Geography Of Albania
The Geography Of Albania

Meet Staten Island's 'Albanian Bear'

Albania Travel Video Guide
Albania Travel Video Guide. Awaking Sleeping Beauty--like in the 1990s from her hardline communist isolation, Albania was a stranger from another time. Her cities weren't choked by car fumes, her beaches were unspoilt by mass tourism, her long-suffering people were a little dazed and confused. While things have changed a lot since then, this ancient land still offers something increasingly rare in Europe these days -- a glance into a culture that is all its own. Raised on a diet of separation and hardship, Albania is distinctly Albanian.

Albania Travel Guide - Visiting the Archaeological City of Butrint
Located atop a hill, the site contains incredible views of the surrounding Butrint National Park.
The mysteries of the Archaeological City of Butrint are sure to inspire all who visit.

Money Problems in Tirana, Albania
First day in Tirana and I make a noob ATM mistake and forget the currency exchange which results in me taking out $1300US instead of $130US. Other than that, Alex and I roam the streets giving you an idea of what it's like, do some shopping and regular admin stuff the day after you arrive and have a wild night out on the town.
Tirana is cool, I really like Tirana, Albania.

THE FIRST PUBLIC ROUND TABLE: YES or NO to the Platforms in the croatian Adriatic sea? NO!
THE FIRST PUBLIC ROUND TABLE: YES or NO to the Platforms in the croatian Adriatic sea? NO!
Sincerely,

Flora and fauna In Albania
Flora and fauna In Albania
Although a small country, Albania is distinguished for its rich biological diversity. The variation of geomorphology, climate and terrain create favorable conditions for a number of endemic and sub-endemic species with 27 endemic and 160 subendemic vascular plants present in the country. The total number of plants is over 3250 species, approximately 30% of the entire flora species found in Europe.
