Hostages held at Clinton campaign office

Aut_0214

Part of downtown Rochester
has been evacuated as police respond to an armed standoff with hostages
at Hillary Clinton’s local headquarters. Two volunteers are believed to
be hostages.

The incident began at about 1 p.m.

In an
interview with WMUR, Lettie Tzizik, an employee of a nearby medical
supply company, said a woman who had been released with her small child
by the intruder fled to her nearby worksite to seek help. The woman
said a man with pepper-and-salt hair in his 40s with what appeared to
be a bomb duct-taped to his chest had entered the office and ordered
everyone onto the floor.

Former U.S. Attorney Bill Shaheen, a
high-ranking Clinton campaign official, said two volunteers were being
held captive. He confirmed Tzizik’s account of the apparent bomb.

Oglethorpe Needs Your Help

Go suggest some people to sit on their panels:

Hold The Date [Jonah Goldberg]

Joe Knippenberg posts this over at No Left Turns:

The day after Super Tuesday (or is that Stupor Tuesday?)—Wednesday, February 6th, for those who aren’t paying attention—Jonah Goldberg will be keynoting a conference at Oglethorpe. He’ll be talking about his new book. I’m looking for professor and blogger types to fill out a couple of roundtables, one on the future of liberalism and conservatism in America, the other on the nomination marathon/sprint. Contact me by email (jknippenberg@oglethorpe.edu) if you’re interested. I could come up with airfare and accommodations for some of you, but can promise nothing more than conversation and conviviality.

Columnwhoring: War on Christmas, Bitches!

We won’t go until we get some:

I’ve spent the past week getting ready for the War on Christmas.

Nativity scene?

Check.

Numerous CDs of the loudest, most annoying carols ever recorded?

Check.

Garlands, trimmings, cards and candles?

Check.

Figgy pudding?

Check and (burp) check.

I am ready to do battle with the secular forces of evil determined to destroy my holiday. Armed with nothing but a DVD of “The Muppet’s Christmas Carol” and an inflatable plastic snowman, I will beat back the horde of invading bah-humbuggers and save the Navidad.

I’ve even been rehearsing my battle cry, courtesy of the Chipmunks Christmas song:

ALVIN!!!

I’ll be here all week. Try the veal.

Today On Holden’s Obsession With The Gaggle

Chimpy, The Great Economic Prognosticator On “The Facts”, August 9, 2007:

Q What’s going on in the housing market, is it a correction or a crisis, in your view? Can you assess that?

THE PRESIDENT: Yesterday I did comment upon that, that there was a — I talked about the different scenarios that I had been briefed on about whether or not there would be a precipitous decline in housing or whether it would be what one would call a soft landing, and it appeared at this point that it looks we’re headed for a soft landing. And that’s what the facts say.

Dana Peroxide, Today:

Q The administration has released its updated economic forecast, cutting the 2008 growth. Many people are worried about the risk of a recession. What’s the White House’s take on that?

MS. PERINO: Well, Eddie Lazear, the President’s Chairman of the Council on Economic Advisers, did a conference call. The transcript will be out soon. I understand a lot of people weren’t able to listen to it because the news cycle came out as it did. But it’s been clear to everyone that the fall-out from the housing market is going to have an effect. And that’s not a surprise.

Support The Troops, Bitches!

Well, what do you know? It turns out that the Pentagon has underreported the number of US servicemen and women wounded in Iraq by awhopping 40%.

At least 20,000 U.S. troops who were not classified as wounded during combat in Iraq and Afghanistan have been found with signs of brain injuries, according to military and veterans records compiled by USA TODAY.

The data, provided by the Army, Navy and Department of Veterans Affairs, show that about five times as many troops sustained brain trauma as the 4,471 officially listed by the Pentagon through Sept. 30. These cases also are not reflected in the Pentagon’s official tally of wounded, which stands at 30,327.

On Making Mistakes

It gets more pathetic by the hour, but let’s talk about the one-day story.

A friend of mine who’s writing a journalism book was talking with me about blogging and feedback, about the amount of response you get and the crit and whatnot, and what the difference was between that and “real journalism.” And of course my point, as always, ad infinitum, was that it’s pretty much the same response you give when you get 15 phone calls about something.

You fuck up, you make a mistake, you get something wrong, you admit it, apologize, fix it and move on. It’s a one-day story. You look stupid for a while, a year later the thought of that mistake still makes you want to crawl in a hole and die, still makes you question whether you have any skill at all, whether you should just give it up and go work in a toll booth if the toll-takers will have your pathetic self, but as far as the public and your phone callers and feedbackers are concerned, it’s over. It sucks, but it’s over.

You do what Klein’s doing, what Deborah Howell does, what Gwen Ifill does, and deny, and obfuscate, and whine about “bloggers” and how mean they are, and how they say fuck, and you drag this out for weeks and weeks and weeks and it never ends. And to your critics you’re no longer just a dude who made a mistake, you’re a coward and a liar. All because you couldn’t see what third graders are taught every day: That we all make mistakes and it doesn’t make you smaller to admit that and say you’re sorry.

Now, granted, Klein’s mistake was one on which he premised his entire story. Oooh, been there. Winced in sympathy, actually, because do I ever know what THAT feels like. Years later the thought still makes me nauseous. But you don’t gain anything and you only prolong the agony by doing what he’s doing, and what he actually did was worse than that: He admitted it was laziness, not honest mistaken information or getting his stupid rented fingers mixed up on the keyboard or being late or drunk or lied to or whatever, but actually admitted he just couldn’t be arsed to get it right and anyway, it fit in with the overall narrative that Democrats are stupid and Republicans say so, so fuck you. I’ll also grant I can imagine what that feels like; what I simply can’t fathom is having the big swinging ones tooffer it as a defense of your actions. And a huge part of this is that they simply didn’t expect there to be anyone out there to challenge it, the usual Republican line, because until the last 6 years or so, there really wasn’t.

I don’t for a minute think Klein’s going to face any actual consequences for this or any other mistake. He’s a star, and high-level journalism is all about starfucking these days, and on-staff columnists anywhere are notorious Bigfoots, even if they’re really nice about it. His editors are sitting around a table right now talking about how he’s a “phenomenon” on the Interwebs, and OMG isn’t it the coolest, that all the Internet peeps is talkin’ about little old us? They’ve been weaned on the concept that any talk about them on this newfangled wireless Web thingy is good, and we’re all just pretend people out here anyway, so who cares? Plus there’s the defensive thing going on, one of “theirs” being attacked, and no matter how much of a dick the guy is, you want to defend him so as not to tarnish everybody’s rep.

Would that he was so concerned. Maybe he wouldn’t have fucked up in the first place.

Not counting their sacrifice

Last month Iread in my local media about the death of Sfc. Anthony Raymond Wasielewski from Ladysmith WI. He had been injured in Iraq last May and died at his home in early October. It appeared his death was related to his comabat injuries but from the article that was not conclusive. I wondered if he would be counted as a casualty of the war. I checkedIraq Coalition Casualty Count site and found he was not listed.

Recently I checked back at the site and found that Sfc. Anthony Raymond Wasielewski is listed in a separate count of“Post Iraq Deaths Not Confirmed By the DoD”

Name Date
Richards, Jack D. 29-Jul-2007
Cassidy, Gerald J. 25-Sep-2007
Smith, John “Bill” 01-Oct-2005
Wasielewsk, Anthony Raymond 08-Oct-2007
Salerno III, Raymond A. 16-Jul-2006

Note: The soldiers listed above died from wounds received in Iraq,
however, the DoD has not included their deaths in their official count.

If you click through on the names of those listed above it will go to local news stories. I wonder if other such local news stories are still out there? It would certainly seem easy for such to get lost or not noticed and thus not counted even unofficially.

Wisconsin native, Sfc. Anthony Raymond Wasielewski, age 50, had been injured in a roadside bombing in Ramadi and later died at home from those wounds. He sacrificed his life for this country and that sacrifice should be counted…officially.

Hearts and Minds

Splattered along a new road in Afghanistan.

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 28 — A NATO airstrike killed 14 laborers working for an Afghan road construction company that had been contracted by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to build a road in the mountainous province of Nuristan in eastern Afghanistan, officials said.

The strike occurred late Monday night in the Norgram district of Nuristan when the Afghan workers of Amerifa Road Construction Company were sleeping in tents after a day’s work.

“Fourteen of our mechanics and laborers were killed as they were asleep in their tents,” said Nurullah Jalali, the executive director of the construction company. “We just collected pieces of flesh from our tired workers and put them in 14 coffins.”

The governor of Nuristan, Tamim Nuristani, said he could confirm that 13 workers had been “mistakenly” killed when NATO forces bombed the area based on what he said was an intelligence report that insurgents were infiltrating the area.

“All these victims are civilians, and they were from nearby provinces,” Mr. Nuristani said.

A NATO spokesman said its forces had struck the area in an attack on what it believed were Taliban insurgents but could not confirm that the road workers had been killed.

Mr. Jalali said that in the year his company had worked in the region, his workers had not come across any militants. “We have not seen any evidence of insurgency in that specific area, and we don’t know why and who attacked our laborers,” he said.

Sigh. I GuessDana Thinks That Thirty Civilian Deaths Would Be OK

Q Thirty-five Iraqis, including women and children, were killed by Americans yesterday. Do you still consider that we’re having a big success there?

MS. PERINO: I don’t think that that number is correct, as far as I know. Obviously, we regret the loss of any innocent life. I know that our military takes great pains to make sure that they are protected in this war zone. I’d refer you to the Multinational Force In Iraq for more.

Q — newspapers today —

MS. PERINO: I don’t think that that number is what they said. That wasn’t the number in the newspaper.

Pwnd By The Chinese Again

Q Dana, there’s a report that the Chinese Foreign Minister told the President today the reason that a U.S. aircraft carrier was turned away from Hong Kong was due to a misunderstanding. First of all, can you confirm that? And secondly, is that an acceptable explanation?

MS. PERINO: The President met today with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang, this morning in the Oval Office. They discussed North Korea, Iran, and many other bilateral issues that we have with China. The President raised the issue about the recent aborted port call by the USS Kitty Hawk. Foreign Minister Yang announced that — assured the President that it was a misunderstanding. I was not able to be there, but that’s the readout that I have for you, that that’s the explanation that was given to the President.

Q Is that an acceptable explanation to the President?

MS. PERINO: I don’t have any more from — I don’t have a presidential reaction. I just know about the meeting.

Q What kind of misunderstanding? How do you have a misunderstanding that you turn an aircraft carrier around? Do you know what the explanation was?

MS. PERINO: I don’t know what his explanation was. All I know was he told the President that it was a misunderstanding. I don’t have details, but I’ll see if I can get anything more for you.

Les Crakcs On Chimpy’s Saudi Pals

Q On CNN, Governor Huckabee said that U.S. consumers are financing both sides in the war on terror, because every time we put our credit card in the gas pump we’re paying so that the Saudis get obscenely rich, with the money funding madrassas that train the terrorists. And my question: Does the President believe that Governor Huckabee is wrong to say this and that we’re enslaved to Saudi oil?

MS. PERINO: That’s a clever way to try to get me to comment on what is now a matter that is a part of a presidential candidacy. The President is looking forward to working with Congress when they get back. We hope that we can get an agreement on an energy bill that will help reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy.

Do They Have Fudgicles In Israel? I Bet He Would Go If He Knew They Had Fudgicles

Q Dana, is the President planning any trips to Israel and the West Bank?

MS. PERINO: He was asked — he made no announcements, in terms of travel, today. One of the things he said is that you don’t need to be in the region in order to help facilitate getting to this point. In fact, the President, as you know, has not traveled to Israel as President; he went as governor of Texas. And so he said that if there are plans and news of a future trip, that he’ll let us know.

Q But he doesn’t think that would send a signal that he’s fully engaged in this? I mean, he just doesn’t —

MS. PERINO: I think that you saw — what you saw today is that the President is fully engaged, and that it’s because of his actions — if you go back to 2002, where he — 2001, where he said, we are no longer going to stand for terror; in 2002, he calls for — he’s the first President to call for a Palestinian state.

[snip]

Q And then just back to his visit — or lack thereof — to Israel, is there a reason that he hasn’t gone to Israel during the course of his presidency?

MS. PERINO: No, not that I’m aware of. Obviously he’s — he has said several times that he really loved his trip to Israel when he was governor and that of course he would like to go again. If there can be an agreement and plans come together, then we’ll let you know.

[snip]

Q Dana, why do you think it is the President never has gone to Israel over the last six-and-a-half years? He has been a strong supporter; it is unusual for a President not to make a trip to that part —

MS. PERINO: I’m not going to speculate as to why he hasn’t gone. There could be a variety of reasons, including security. But I know that he would like to go again and if those plans come together he’ll let us all know.
