Plot
A film about living in New York City surrounded by so much wealth and struggling to find some scraps for yourself. Fat Cat's, the Greenwich Village club where the story takes place, is the stomping grounds for a motley cast including homo-thugs, teenage delinquent chess players, college kids and the film's central characters: Annie, Dee and Evgenya. A Russian-American "masseuse" from Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, Evgenya has inherited the native New Yorker's dream to see her name in lights. Dee is a Lesbian from Brooklyn and a Lothario who does her best to come across like a thug and a hard case until she finds her intellect challenged by a college girl. Annie, who sees her father carried off in handcuffs, has become a harried, small time grifter who works all day and spends her nights at Fat Cats where people find ways to scam, seduce and connect to each other while the drinks flow and the music plays. Annie just wants a piece of the old New York, when any scam was possible, but these days she's drinking herself to sleep at Fat Cat's certain that she's owed something better but unsure of what it is and how to get it. These are the fat cats, lost people dreaming big about the wrong things.

[Breaking News] Nigeria attack Students shot dead as they slept, College of Agriculture, YOBE

The students were shot dead as they slept in their dormitory at the College of Agriculture in Yobe state. North-eastern Nigeria is under a state of emergency amid an Islamist insurgency by the Boko Haram group. Boko Haram is fighting to overthrow Nigeria's government to create an Islamic state, and has launched a number of attacks on schools. Casualty figures from the latest attack vary, but a local politician told the BBC that around 50 students had been killed. The politician said two vanloads of bodies had been taken to a hospital in Yobe's state capital, Damaturu. A witness quoted by Reuters news agency counted 40 bodies at the hospital, mostly those of young men believed to be students. College provost Molima Idi Mato, speaking to Associated Press, also said the number of dead could be as high as 50, adding that security forces were still recovering the bodies and that about 1,000 students had fled the campus. A Nigerian military source told AP that soldiers had collected 42 bodies. The gunmen also set fire to classrooms, a military spokesman in Yobe state, Lazarus Eli, told Agence France-Presse. The college is in the rural Gujba district. In May, President Goodluck Jonathan ordered an operation against Boko Haram, and a state of emergency was declared for the north-east on 14 May. Many of the Islamist militants left their bases in the north-east and violence initially fell, but revenge attacks quickly followed. In June, Boko Haram carried out two attacks on schools in the region. At least nine children were killed in a school on the outskirts of Maiduguri, while 13 students and teachers were killed in a school in Damaturu. In July in the village of Mamudo in Yobe state, Islamist militants attacked a school's dormitories with guns and explosives, killing at least 42 people, mostly students. Boko Haram regards schools as a symbol of Western culture. The group's name translates as "Western education is forbidden". Boko Haram is led by Abubakar Shekau. The Nigerian military said in August that it might have killed him in a shoot-out. However, a video released last week purportedly showed him alive. Latest Boko Haram Nigeria attack: hundreds of militant fighters capture multinational military base

Hundreds of Boko Haram militants seized a village and military base in Nigeria’s remote northeast on Saturday, according to a Reuters report. The attack took place in the town on Baga, near Lake Chad. The military station, a key multinational base, was comprised of troops from Nigeria and neighboring Niger, Chad and Cameroon although only the Nigerian troops were stationed there. Nigerian forces exchanged heavy gunfire with Boko Haram fighters, but were forced to abandon the camp. Residents of Baga were sent fleeing while the militants began a killing spree before setting the town ablaze. “Yesterday at around 05:00 we were woken up by heavy gunshots, and we couldn't identify where the shots were coming from,” an unnamed resident told the BBC. Many hid in bushes while others escaped to neighboring countries by boat. Ghana's President, Mr John Dramani Mahama in an exclusive interview with Channels Television's Network Africa, has stated that Nigeria must quickly assume the responsibility to develop the economy of the West African sub-region. Likening the Africa's most populous nation to Japan, Mr Mahama urged Nigeria to be the 'driver' and drive the sub-region's economy with its massive economy and market just as Japan did for Asia. "Nigeria has a huge population and its role in West Africa, gives it a certain leadership that it must take on to itself, to drive the whole of the sub-region along." The President expressed his displeasure at closure of Nigeria's market to the imports from the sub-region saying textiles produced in Ghana cannot be imported in Nigeria. "Nigeria has nothing to fear from Ghana" he quipped, adding that Nigeria needs to open-up its economy and allow imports from Ghana. He also spoke about an on-going review of arcade market law that led to the controversial expulsion of some Nigerian businesses from Ghana in 2012.

About Africa Festival : Africa is a vast continent and its regions and nations have distinct forms of traditional dance and music. In April 2008, a 2-day cultural event entitled 'A Tribute to Africa' was organized, on the margins of the Africa summit in new Delhi. 12 countries from Africa participated in the event, with troupes from Algiers, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Libya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. The ICCR was founded in 1950 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, independent India's first Education Minister. The Council helps formulate and implement policies pertaining to India's external cultural relations, to foster mutual understanding between India and other countries and to promote cultural exchanges with other peoples. Calabar is located on the bank of the Calabar River in confluence with the Cross River at the Southeast Region of Nigeria. With population estimated at 240 million, it is also the capital of Cross River State . The people living here are the Efiks known for their artistic skills, rich food, culture and traditions. Their main occupation is Agriculture. As one of the first regions invaded by the British, Calabar became the first capital of Nigeria and an important Niger delta trading state in the 19th century. It served as a seaport exporting rubber, palm oil, cocoa and timber. Calabar is an educational center that homes of one of the major universities in Nigeria, University of Calabar (UNICAL). One of the four cultural centers in Nigeria where most of the families in Calabar are involved in the development of culture ensuring that their children maintain and preserve the Efik cultural traditions. Calabar is made up of seven clans (Esien Efik Itiaba) namely: Creek Town , Adiabo, Ikoneto, Ikot Offiong, Old Town , Duke Town and Henshaw Town . As a tourist heaven, Calabar offers the best cultural setting of the Efik people as you can see in their traditional attire, Masquerades and cuisine. In 2005, Niger’s President “offered his people” the removal of user fees covering ante-natal consultations, children under five years, and caesarian sections. Increased access to health facilities resulted, and many poor people benefited from this subsidy. There was, however, insufficient preparation and inadequate funding mechanisms put in place. Most health facilities were not reimbursed by the State leading to paralysis in services when facilities were unable to buy expensive drugs or lab reagents. The Nigerian army says it has rescued hundreds of girls and women from Boko Haram in Nigeria’s Sambisa Forest during a military operation on Tuesday afternoon. Nigerian troops destroyed three Boko Haram camps in the Sambisa Forest and say they rescued 200 girls and 93 women from the camps. The forest is located nearly 100 kilometers from Chibok, where Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 female students from the town’s Government Secondary School last year. Intelligence officials say they believe that at least some of the girls are being held in Sambisa Forest, however, U.S. reconnaissance drones have failed to find them. An army spokesperson told Reuters that the girls rescued on Tuesday were not the students kidnapped from Chibok last year. The Nigerian army, backed by Chad, Niger and Cameroon, has made some strides in taking back territory from Boko Haram over the past month. The footage, obtained from numerous sources during a recent trip to Borno state, reveals graphic evidence of multiple war crimes being carried out in Nigeria. It includes horrific images of detainees having their throats slit one by one and dumped in mass graves by men who appear to be members of the Nigerian military and the “Civilian Joint Task Force” (CJTF), state-sponsored militias. It also shows the aftermath of a Boko Haram raid on a village in which the armed group killed nearly 100 people and destroyed or badly damaged scores of homes and other buildings.

Zinder Niger, officially the Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. Niger covers a land area of almost 1,270,000 km2, making it the largest nation in West Africa, with over 80 percent of its land area covered by the Sahara desert. The country's predominantly Islamic population of 17,138,707 is mostly clustered in the far south and west of the nation. The capital city is Niamey, located in the far-southwest corner of Niger. Niger is a developing country, and is consistently one of the lowest-ranked in the United Nations' Human Development Index (HDI); it was ranked last at 187th for 2013. Much of the non-desert portions of the country are threatened by periodic drought and desertification. The economy is concentrated around subsistence and some export agriculture clustered in the more fertile south, and the export of raw materials, especially uranium ore. Niger faces serious challenges to development due to its landlocked position, desert terrain, poor education and poverty of its people, lack of infrastructure, poor health care, and environmental degradation. Nigerien society reflects a diversity drawn from the long independent histories of its several ethnic groups and regions and their relatively short period living in a single state. Historically, what is now Niger has been on the fringes of several large states. Since independence, Nigeriens have lived under five constitutions and three periods of military rule. Following a military coup in 2010, Niger has become a democratic, multi-party state. A majority live in rural areas, and have little access to advanced education. Early human settlement in Niger is evidenced by numerous archaeological remains. In prehistoric times, the climate of the Sahara (Tenere desert in Niger) was wet and provided favorable conditions for agriculture and livestock herding in fertile grasslands environment five thousand years ago. In 2005–2006, a graveyard in the Tenere desert was discovered by Paul Sereno, a paleontologist from the University of Chicago. His team discovered 5,000 year old remains of a woman and two children in the Tenere Desert. The evidence along with remains of animals that do not typically live in desert are among the strongest evidence of the 'green' sahara in Niger. It is believed that progressive desertification around 5000 BCE pushed sedentary populations to the south and south-east (Lake Chad). By at least the 5th century BCE, Niger became an area of trans-Saharan trade, led by the Berber tribes from the north, using camels as an adapted mean of transportation through the desert. This trade has made Agadez, a pivotal place of the trans-Saharan trade. This mobility, which will continue in waves for a couple of centuries, is accompanied with further migration to the south and interbreeding between southern black and northern white populations. It also helps the introduction of islam to the region at the end of the seventh century. Several empires and kingdoms also flourished during this era up to the beginning of colonization in Africa. The Songhai Empire was an empire bearing the name of its main ethnic group, Songhai or Sonrai, and located in western Africa on the bend of the Niger River in present-day Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso. In the 600s, Songhai tribes settled down north of modern day Niamey and founded the Songhai city-states of Koukia and Gao. By the 1000s, Gao became the capital of the Songhai Empire. From 1000 to 1325, The Songhai Empire prospered and managed to maintain peace with its neighboring empires including the Mali Empire. In 1325, the Songhai Empire was conquered by the Mali Empire, but was freed in 1335 by prince Ali Kolen and his brother, Songhai princes held captive by Moussa Kankan, the ruler of the Mali Empire. From the mid-15th to the late 16th century, Songhai was one of the largest Islamic empires in history. Between the Niger River and the Lake Chad lay a fertile area and Hausa kingdoms. These kingdoms flourished from the mid-14th century up until the early 19th century when they were conquered by Usman dan Fodio, founder of the Sokoto Empire. The Hausa kingdoms were not a compact entity but several federations of kingdoms more or less independent of each other. Their organization was somewhat democratic: the Hausa kings were elected by the notables of the country and could be removed by the latter. The Hausa Kingdoms began as seven states founded according to the Bayajidda legend by the six sons of Bawo. Bawo was the unique son of the hausa queen Daurama and Bayajidda or (Abu Yazid by certain Nigerien historians) who came from Baghdad. The Niger River is the principal river of western Africa, extending about 4,180 km (2,600 mi). Its drainage basin is 2,117,700 km (817,600 sq mi) in area Its source is in the Guinea Highlands in southeastern Guinea. It runs in a crescent through Mali, Niger, on the border with Benin and then through Nigeria, discharging through a massive delta, known as the Niger Delta or the Oil Rivers, into the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. The Niger is the third-longest river in Africa, exceeded only by the Nile and the Congo River (also known as the Zaïre River). Its main tributary is the Benue River. Mungo Park who was credited as being the first Westerner to encounter the central portion of the Niger River was a Scottish explorer of the African continent. In 1794 Park offered his services to the African Association, then looking for a successor to Major Daniel Houghton, who had been sent in 1790 to discover the course of the Niger River and had died in the Sahara. Supported by Sir Joseph Banks, Park was selected. On 21 June 1795, he reached the Gambia River and ascended it 200 miles to a British trading station named Pisania. On 2 December, accompanied by two local guides, he started for the unknown interior. He chose the route crossing the upper Senegal basin and through the semi-desert region of Kaarta. The journey was full of difficulties, and at Ludamar he was imprisoned by a Moorish chief for four months. On 1 July 1796, he escaped, alone and with nothing but his horse and a pocket compass, and on the 21st reached the long-sought Niger River at Ségou, being the first European to do so. He followed the river downstream 80 miles to Silla, where he was obliged to turn back, lacking the resources to go further.[4][5] On his return journey, begun on 30 July, he took a route more to the south than that originally followed, keeping close to the Niger as far as Bamako, thus tracing its course for some 300 miles. At Kamalia he fell ill, and owed his life to the kindness of a man in whose house he lived for seven months. Eventually he reached Pisania again on 10 June 1797, returning to Scotland by way of Antigua on 22 December. He had been thought dead, and his return home with news of the discovery of the Niger River evoked great public enthusiasm. An account of his journey was drawn up for the African Association by Bryan Edwards, and his own detailed narrative appeared in 1799 (Travels in the Interior of Africa). It was extremely popular and is available in Project Gutenberg.[6] His book, Travels in the interior districts of Africa, was a success because it detailed what he observed, what he survived, and the people he encountered. His honest descriptions set a standard for future travel writers to follow. This gave Europeans a glimpse of what Africa was really like. Park introduced them to a vast, unexplored continent. After Park's death public and political interest in Africa began to increase. He had proved that Africa could be explored. Perhaps the most lasting effect of Park's travels, though, was their influence on European governments.
