The Cave of Altamira is a cave in Spain famous for its Upper Paleolithic cave paintings featuring drawings and polychrome rock paintings of wild mammals and human hands. It was the first cave in which prehistoric cave paintings were discovered. When the discovery was first made public in 1880, it led to a bitter public controversy between experts which continued into the early 20th century, since many did not believe prehistoric man had the intellectual capacity to produce any kind of artistic expression. The acknowledgment of the authenticity of the paintings, which finally came in 1902, changed the perception of prehistoric human beings.
It is located near the town of Santillana del Mar in Cantabria, Spain, 30 km west of the city of Santander. The cave with its paintings has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The discovery of pre-historic decorated caves in western Europe transformed the way we think about the development of art. The earliest known evidence of human artistic endeavor, the awe-inspiring paintings, dramatic engravings and small, delicate sculptures of animals and humans found in these caves still hold a unique power and fascination, more than a century after they were first discovered. In this book, internationally renowned expert on prehistoric art Jean Clottes explores the origins of art and creativity. He takes the reader on a guided tour of 85 caves and rock shelters, many of which are not open to the public, revealing the extraordinary beauty of the works of art within them.
Cave Art features more than 300 works from the Paleolithic period, made between 35,000 and 11,000 years ago, presented in geographical and chronological order. This comprehensive, accessible introduction to prehistoric art includes such spectacular works as the famous horses of Lascaux, the buffalo in the Altamira cave in Spain and the ivory carving of a woman's face found at Brassempouy in the south of France, as well as examples from less well-known sites. A wonderful range of animals is presented, from cave bears to reindeer, as well as mysterious abstract signs and schematic representations of human beings. Examples of portable art and sculpture are also included. While most of the caves described in the book are European, Cave Art also includes examples of open-air rock art made after the last ice age at sites around the world.
With an unparalleled selection of images, Cave Art offers a unique guided tour of the earliest expressions of human creativity. Each work in Cave Art is illustrated by a color photograph, and accompanied by a clear, vivid explanatory text. A concise introduction tells the story of the discovery of the caves, and gives a clear outline of current knowledge, research and debate on the subject of prehistoric art. The book also includes a chronology, maps of the main caves and sites, a glossary and a list of sites that can be visited.

The earliest discovered human works of art, Pleistocene Cave Paintings, were created just as the last Ice Age was approaching. Three of these cave art sites - Chauvet and Lascaux in France, and Altamira in Spain are featured in this video. The painting techniques are remarkably sophisticated and include perspective and the use of the contours of the cave wall for a bas-relief effect. The subjects are mostly animals and some of the pictures are thought to represent stories of great hunts. Scattered among the images of various, largely extinct, creatures are dots thought to represent stars, along with stencils of hands. These remarkable works of Cro-Magnon humans are both instructive and mysterious.

The Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc cave - among the world's oldest sites of prehistoric cave painting, along with the El Castillo Cave Paintings (39,000 BCE), the Sulawesi Cave Art (37,900 BCE) and the abstract signs found at Altamira (c.34,000 BCE) - was discovered quite by chance in the Ardeche gorge in 1994, by three speleologists - Jean-Marie Chauvet, Eliette Brunel-Deschamps and Christian Hillaire - while they were surveying another cave nearby. Inside the Chauvet grotto, they found a 400-metre long network of galleries and rooms, covered in rock art and petroglyphs, whose floor was littered with a variety of paleontological remains, including the skulls of bears and two wolves. Some of these bones had been arranged in special position by the previous human inhabitants. Amazingly, Chauvet's entire labyrinth of prehistoric art had been left undisturbed since a landslide sealed off the entrance about 25,000 years ago.
The cave contains some of the oldest known cave paintings, based on radiocarbon dating of "black from drawings, from torch marks and from the floors", according to Jean Clottes. Clottes concludes that the "dates fall into two groups, one centered around 27,000–26,000 BP and the other around 32,000–30,000 BP." As of 1999, the dates of 31 samples from the cave had been reported. The earliest, sample Gifa 99776 from "zone 10", dates to 32,900 ± 490 BP.

A portrait is a work of art pictorial, graphic, sculptural, musical, photographic, cinematographic and literary generally representing a real person or group. As a work of art, the portrait has undergone changes both in techniques and styles in its use for purposes of official representation or pleasure. In the history of visual arts, human representation dates from ancient times: there are representations in prehistoric times, statuette, with engraved stones or drawn on walls. The portrait itself is growing among the first civilizations in Persia and Egypt.
Beyond conventional and photographic approaches to portraiture, a new form of portraits of the character, based on an inference approach, little known outside the field of psychology. The principle of this new approach to portraiture is that if a sufficiently large number of writings or drawings of a subject are available, this material can be used to decrypt the key character traits, personality and personal view of the subject.
In politics, portraits of heads of state often symbolize the state itself. In most countries, the protocol requires that the head of state's portrait appears on all public buildings. The overabundance of such portraits can be the mark of a personality cult, at work in many authoritarian regimes.
The artists of the early times widened the portrait exploration fields, releasing the visual resemblance constraints. Henri Matisse simplified the line and color to give them all their expressive force. Pablo Picasso realized many portraits, including several portraits Cubist where the model is barely recognizable. The art of portrait painting declined in mid-century, probably due to the growing interest in abstract and non-figurative art. However, the portrait has recently experienced a revival.
Previous drawings which are given already sufficiently worked to form the basis of the final work, are called " cardboard ", especially in the technique of fresco painting, which is passed to the wall by measuring, or by clicking along sketch lines so obtained, and in the wall, a drawing points that full lines joining them to reproduce. They are also used tapestry cartoons or for large paintings.
Sketch final art reaches a high level of quality and mechanical composition of all the visual elements that will be used in reproduction, such as photos, drawings in color, typography and even paper suggested to be used in the final reproduction.
The drawing is a form of graphic expression, plasma images on a flat space. Because of this, it is considered part of fine art called painting. It is one of the modalities of the visual arts. It is considered as the universal drawing graphic language. It has been used by mankind to convey ideas, projects and, in a broader sense, their ideas, customs and culture.
The drawing serves as a tool for representing real objects or ideas that sometimes can not be accurately expressed in words. The earliest known drawings date back to prehistoric times ; the cave paintings of Altamira Cave are some of the oldest examples, where the human being reflected in the ceilings and walls of the caves what he considered important.
Drawing is the language universal, and that without any words can convey ideas graphically which is intelligible to all. There are pictures that are recognized within a culture, which we call symbols. Other examples are those belonging to the Signage, activity is responsible for communicating behavioral parameters determined location through graphic language. Paul Valery said that the three great human creations are drawing, poetry and mathematics, which excludes music for some reason.
Drawing and painting is not the same. For its physical nature, drawing is a subset of the known art forms such as painting, but is not part of the painting as representation technique. Drawing is the art of graph objects on a flat surface. The ratio in the drawing is very important, as this will give the object represented the harmony necessary to properly connect all the elements that comprise it. A useful and practical advice when making the frame of the drawing, it is placed in front of a mirror, so find out if our work is well proportioned and if you save the corresponding symmetry; This is very helpful especially the drawings of faces and portraits.
The portrait is a fascinating object of study that concentrates most of the shapes of the human face.

III. Signos gráficos no figurativos, geométricos y lineales.
