Karol Szymanowski was Poland’s foremost composer during the first half of the 20th Century, creating a very independent and unusual style that mixed German Late Romanticism, French Impressionism and Polish folk music. All these three were ultimately to blend in his final period when he celebrated the music of his country, superbly crowned by his Symphony No. 4 which is, in his words, both a concerto and a symphony for piano and orchestra.
Karol Szymanowski fue el compositor más importante de Polonia durante la primera mitad del siglo 20, creando un estilo independiente e inusual que mezclaba el Romanticismo tardío alemán con el Impresionismo musical francés y la música tradicional polaca. Karol Szymanowski’s life and career may be seen, from our vantage point, as a twofold quest in which the personal and the national ran in parallel, or, perhaps, were intertwined. On the one hand, he was engaged in a typically post-Romantic search for self-realization as an artist, working towards a full development of his individual musical aims and sensibilities; while on the other, he came more and more to seek an authentic compositional voice that could be heard (one way or another) as distinctively Polish, and also as distinctively modern. Yet his intensity and subjectivism went hand in hand with a strong desire for a certain kind of resolved clarity in the finished musical form—classical finish achieved by another route, perhaps, as an expression of modernity. His aesthetic stance, or let us say more soberly his musical practice as a composer, was eclectic in a stylistic and technical sense. But the subtle power of his invention and his personal mode of utterance were resilient and original enough to absorb and individualize (rather than merely appropriate) such a range of influences, and so turn them to his own advantage.
Szymanowski’s Four Études, Op 4, were composed between 1900 and 1902. Before his Warsaw studies Szymanowski had attended the music school of his father’s cousin, Gustav Neuhaus, at Elisavetgrad, in what is now Ukraine. He dedicated these pieces to Tala (Natalia) Neuhaus, a lifelong friend. The harmonic and melodic inflections of early Scriabin are especially noticeable in the first Étude, in E flat minor, though not the distilled, evanescent brevity also characteristic of him. The second Étude, in G flat major, simultaneously divides groups of six semiquavers into subsets of both two and three to create an Escher-like, dizzying sense of conflicting perceptions. The B flat minor third Étude, which in posterity has achieved some independent fame, presents a sorrowful cantilena above slow repeating chords, rising to an imposing climactic restatement of the principal idea before reaching a sombre but subdued conclusion. The last Étude of the group offers a tantalizing glimpse of a far more tangential approach to tonality, juxtaposing hints of C major and A flat minor at the outset and launching without preamble into a restless discourse marked by obsessive repetition of short melodic motifs against a backdrop of triplet quavers. Eventually the fires burn themselves out, however, and with final calm comes unequivocal affirmation of C major as the sovereign key.

Symphony No. 3 "Pieśń o nocy" (Song of the Night), Op. 27, for solo tenor, chorus and orchestra (1914)
The third symphony by Polish composer and pianist Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937). In this composition, Szymanowski sets the translation by Tadeusz Miciński of the poem "Song of the Night" by 13th century Persian poet Jalaluddin Rumi. Although the symphony is in a single movement, it can be subdivided into three contrasting phases corresponding roughly to an invocation, scherzo and finale. The composer described his Third Symphony in a letter to Alexander Siloti, who was planning to lead its premiere:
"The 'Symphony' lasts 20-22 m. and it could be called a symphonic poem. (Its other title is Chant de la Nuit [...]). However, as I am organically averse to 'Symphonic poems' (as a title), it had better stayed a symphony (the third one in order). [...] The tenor's solo in the 'Symph.' is very significant and lasts for a little less than half of the symphony's duration. It seems a very satisfying material for a singer; it is more melodic than declamatory and takes quite a big and graceful, lyrically coloured voice. The choir is rather episodic, except for the initial part, where it has a major role; the style is more harmon[ic] than polyphon[ic]; there is no text in several places."
Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, the English pianist-composer of Parsi parentage, wrote of the impression Szymanowski's Third Symphony made on him:
"Szymanowski took a poem celebrating the beauty, the enigmatic and transcendental beauty of the Eastern night, the like of which one never sees anywhere in Europe, except Sicily which belongs just as much to the East as it does to the West. Based on this poem, he wrote music with a radiant purity of spirit, elevated ecstasy of expression, music permeated with the very essence of the choicest and rarest specimens of Iranian art - the entire score glows with a wonderful colour, rich but never blinding, nor severe, like Persian paintings or silk rugs - this intuition is unprecedented in Western music."

Karol Maciej Szymanowski h. Korwin / Ślepowron, (ur. 3 października 1882 we wsi Tymoszówka na Ukrainie naddnieprzańskiej w Imperium Rosyjskim, zm. 29 marca 1937 w Lozannie) -- polski kompozytor, pianista, pedagog i krytyk muzyczny.
Wraz z Grzegorzem Fitelbergiem, Ludomirem Różyckim i Apolinarym Szeluto należał do grupy kompozytorów Młodej Polski. Obok Fryderyka Chopina jest uznawany za jednego z najwybitniejszych polskich kompozytorów.
W pierwszej fazie swej twórczości Szymanowski wyraźnie pozostawał pod wpływem muzyki romantyzmu, wzorując się na Ryszardzie Straussie i na swym niedoścignionym mistrzu Chopinie. Począwszy od 1914 r. poddał się wpływom impresjonizmu, stając się jednym z najwybitniejszych przedstawicieli modernizmu.
Szymanowski wypracował swój własny bardzo liryczny styl muzyczny oparty na bogatej, innowacyjnej orkiestracji. Wprowadził też do swej muzyki motywy polskiego folkloru, w tym podhalańskiego i kurpiowskiego, na co miały wpływ głównie częste pobyty w Zakopanem.

Between Szymanowski’s early piano works and the Métopes (1915) lies a radical expansion and realignment of aesthetic and technique. This took him from immersion in the dense fugal thinking of Reger to a shadowing of the mature Scriabin’s startling transformation during the first decade of the twentieth century and the leavening, salutary influence of Ravel’s and Debussy’s weightless, diaphanous textures. Devotion to a national tradition dropped from the picture early on, and it is a wider significance, not intrinsic Polishness, that distinguishes Szymanowski in posterity.
The piano was an integral part of Karol Szymanowski’s musical life. He was seven when he began his first lessons on the instrument, studying initially with his father and then with his uncle, Gustav Neuhaus—whose son, Genryk (Heinrich or Harry), Szymanowski’s cousin, was later to be the teacher of Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels and Radu Lupu. The Nine Preludes, Op 1, some of which may have been written when he was only fourteen, attracted the support of Artur Rubinstein, a valuable early champion. It was the third of his Four Études, Op 4, that brought Szymanowski his first taste of popular success. Throughout his life, his music was written at the piano, and it was playing the piano that fed him in a particularly difficult period of his career, in 1932–35; indeed, the Sinfonia Concertante, his Fourth Symphony, written in 1932, became a vehicle for his own performance—he was a highly capable pianist, though no virtuoso.

Karol Maciej Szymanowski (Polish pronunciation: [ˌkarɔl ˌmat͡ɕɛj ʃɨmaˈnɔfskʲi]; 3 October 1882 – 28 March 1937) was a Polish composer and pianist.
Szymanowski was born into a wealthy land-owning Polish gentry family (of the Korwin/Ślepowron coat-of-arms) in Tymoszówka, then in the Russian Empire, now in Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine. He studied music privately with his father before going to Gustav Neuhaus' Elisavetgrad School of Music from 1892. From 1901 he attended the State Conservatory in Warsaw, of which he was later director from 1926 until retiring in 1930. Musical opportunities in Russian-occupied Poland being quite limited at the time, he travelled widely throughout Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the United States. These travels, especially those to the Mediterranean area, provided much inspiration to the composer and esthete.
The fruits of these trips included not only musical works, but poetry and his novel on Greek love Efebos, parts of which were subsequently lost in a fire in 1939. The central chapter was translated by him into Russian and given as a gift in 1919 to Boris Kochno, who was his beloved at the time. Szymanowski also wrote a number of love poems, in French, to the 15-year-old boy. Among these are Ganymède, Baedecker, N'importe, and Vagabond.

Symphony No. 3 "Pieśń o nocy" (Song of the Night), Op. 27, for solo tenor, chorus and orchestra (1914) The third symphony by Polish composer and pianist Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937). In this composition, Szymanowski sets the translation by Tadeusz Miciński of the poem "Song of the Night" by 13th century Persian poet Jalaluddin Rumi. Although the symphony is in a single movement, it can be subdivided into three contrasting phases corresponding roughly to an invocation, scherzo and finale. The composer described his Third Symphony in a letter to Alexander Siloti, who was planning to lead its premiere: "The 'Symphony' lasts 20-22 m. and it could be called a symphonic poem. (Its other title is Chant de la Nuit [...]). However, as I am organically averse to 'Symphonic poems' (as a title), it had better stayed a symphony (the third one in order). [...] The tenor's solo in the 'Symph.' is very significant and lasts for a little less than half of the symphony's duration. It seems a very satisfying material for a singer; it is more melodic than declamatory and takes quite a big and graceful, lyrically coloured voice. The choir is rather episodic, except for the initial part, where it has a major role; the style is more harmon[ic] than polyphon[ic]; there is no text in several places." Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, the English pianist-composer of Parsi parentage, wrote of the impression Szymanowski's Third Symphony made on him: "Szymanowski took a poem celebrating the beauty, the enigmatic and transcendental beauty of the Eastern night, the like of which one never sees anywhere in Europe, except Sicily which belongs just as much to the East as it does to the West. Based on this poem, he wrote music with a radiant purity of spirit, elevated ecstasy of expression, music permeated with the very essence of the choicest and rarest specimens of Iranian art - the entire score glows with a wonderful colour, rich but never blinding, nor severe, like Persian paintings or silk rugs - this intuition is unprecedented in Western music." Karol Maciej Szymanowski h. Korwin / Ślepowron, (ur. 3 października 1882 we wsi Tymoszówka na Ukrainie naddnieprzańskiej w Imperium Rosyjskim, zm. 29 marca 1937 w Lozannie) -- polski kompozytor, pianista, pedagog i krytyk muzyczny. Wraz z Grzegorzem Fitelbergiem, Ludomirem Różyckim i Apolinarym Szeluto należał do grupy kompozytorów Młodej Polski. Obok Fryderyka Chopina jest uznawany za jednego z najwybitniejszych polskich kompozytorów. W pierwszej fazie swej twórczości Szymanowski wyraźnie pozostawał pod wpływem muzyki romantyzmu, wzorując się na Ryszardzie Straussie i na swym niedoścignionym mistrzu Chopinie. Począwszy od 1914 r. poddał się wpływom impresjonizmu, stając się jednym z najwybitniejszych przedstawicieli modernizmu. Szymanowski wypracował swój własny bardzo liryczny styl muzyczny oparty na bogatej, innowacyjnej orkiestracji. Wprowadził też do swej muzyki motywy polskiego folkloru, w tym podhalańskiego i kurpiowskiego, na co miały wpływ głównie częste pobyty w Zakopanem. On the one hand, he was engaged in a typically post-Romantic search for self-realization as an artist, working towards a full development of his individual musical aims and sensibilities; while on the other, he came more and more to seek an authentic compositional voice that could be heard (one way or another) as distinctively Polish, and also as distinctively modern. Yet his intensity and subjectivism went hand in hand with a strong desire for a certain kind of resolved clarity in the finished musical form—classical finish achieved by another route, perhaps, as an expression of modernity. His aesthetic stance, or let us say more soberly his musical practice as a composer, was eclectic in a stylistic and technical sense. But the subtle power of his invention and his personal mode of utterance were resilient and original enough to absorb and individualize (rather than merely appropriate) such a range of influences, and so turn them to his own advantage. Between Szymanowski’s early piano works and the Métopes (1915) lies a radical expansion and realignment of aesthetic and technique. This took him from immersion in the dense fugal thinking of Reger to a shadowing of the mature Scriabin’s startling transformation during the first decade of the twentieth century and the leavening, salutary influence of Ravel’s and Debussy’s weightless, diaphanous textures. Devotion to a national tradition dropped from the picture early on, and it is a wider significance, not intrinsic Polishness, that distinguishes Szymanowski in posterity. The piano was an integral part of Karol Szymanowski’s musical life. He was seven when he began his first lessons on the instrument, studying initially with his father and then with his uncle, Gustav Neuhaus—whose son, Genryk (Heinrich or Harry), Szymanowski’s cousin, was later to be the teacher of Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels and Radu Lupu. The Nine Preludes, Op 1, some of which may have been written when he was only fourteen, attracted the support of Artur Rubinstein, a valuable early champion. It was the third of his Four Études, Op 4, that brought Szymanowski his first taste of popular success. Throughout his life, his music was written at the piano, and it was playing the piano that fed him in a particularly difficult period of his career, in 1932–35; indeed, the Sinfonia Concertante, his Fourth Symphony, written in 1932, became a vehicle for his own performance—he was a highly capable pianist, though no virtuoso. -

On the one hand, he was engaged in a typically post-Romantic search for self-realization as an artist, working towards a full development of his individual musical aims and sensibilities; while on the other, he came more and more to seek an authentic compositional voice that could be heard (one way or another) as distinctively Polish, and also as distinctively modern. Yet his intensity and subjectivism went hand in hand with a strong desire for a certain kind of resolved clarity in the finished musical form—classical finish achieved by another route, perhaps, as an expression of modernity. His aesthetic stance, or let us say more soberly his musical practice as a composer, was eclectic in a stylistic and technical sense. But the subtle power of his invention and his personal mode of utterance were resilient and original enough to absorb and individualize (rather than merely appropriate) such a range of influences, and so turn them to his own advantage.
Szymanowski’s Four Études, Op 4, were composed between 1900 and 1902. Before his Warsaw studies Szymanowski had attended the music school of his father’s cousin, Gustav Neuhaus, at Elisavetgrad, in what is now Ukraine. He dedicated these pieces to Tala (Natalia) Neuhaus, a lifelong friend. The harmonic and melodic inflections of early Scriabin are especially noticeable in the first Étude, in E flat minor, though not the distilled, evanescent brevity also characteristic of him. The second Étude, in G flat major, simultaneously divides groups of six semiquavers into subsets of both two and three to create an Escher-like, dizzying sense of conflicting perceptions. The B flat minor third Étude, which in posterity has achieved some independent fame, presents a sorrowful cantilena above slow repeating chords, rising to an imposing climactic restatement of the principal idea before reaching a sombre but subdued conclusion. The last Étude of the group offers a tantalizing glimpse of a far more tangential approach to tonality, juxtaposing hints of C major and A flat minor at the outset and launching without preamble into a restless discourse marked by obsessive repetition of short melodic motifs against a backdrop of triplet quavers. Eventually the fires burn themselves out, however, and with final calm comes unequivocal affirmation of C major as the sovereign key.

Karol Szymanowski’s life and career may be seen, from our vantage point, as a twofold quest in which the personal and the national ran in parallel, or, perhaps, were intertwined. On the one hand, he was engaged in a typically post-Romantic search for self-realization as an artist, working towards a full development of his individual musical aims and sensibilities; while on the other, he came more and more to seek an authentic compositional voice that could be heard (one way or another) as distinctively Polish, and also as distinctively modern. Yet his intensity and subjectivism went hand in hand with a strong desire for a certain kind of resolved clarity in the finished musical form—classical finish achieved by another route, perhaps, as an expression of modernity. His aesthetic stance, or let us say more soberly his musical practice as a composer, was eclectic in a stylistic and technical sense. But the subtle power of his invention and his personal mode of utterance were resilient and original enough to absorb and individualize (rather than merely appropriate) such a range of influences, and so turn them to his own advantage.
Szymanowski’s Four Études, Op 4, were composed between 1900 and 1902. Before his Warsaw studies Szymanowski had attended the music school of his father’s cousin, Gustav Neuhaus, at Elisavetgrad, in what is now Ukraine. He dedicated these pieces to Tala (Natalia) Neuhaus, a lifelong friend. The harmonic and melodic inflections of early Scriabin are especially noticeable in the first Étude, in E flat minor, though not the distilled, evanescent brevity also characteristic of him. The second Étude, in G flat major, simultaneously divides groups of six semiquavers into subsets of both two and three to create an Escher-like, dizzying sense of conflicting perceptions. The B flat minor third Étude, which in posterity has achieved some independent fame, presents a sorrowful cantilena above slow repeating chords, rising to an imposing climactic restatement of the principal idea before reaching a sombre but subdued conclusion. The last Étude of the group offers a tantalizing glimpse of a far more tangential approach to tonality, juxtaposing hints of C major and A flat minor at the outset and launching without preamble into a restless discourse marked by obsessive repetition of short melodic motifs against a backdrop of triplet quavers. Eventually the fires burn themselves out, however, and with final calm comes unequivocal affirmation of C major as the sovereign key.

The third symphony by Polish composer and pianist Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937). In this composition, Szymanowski sets the translation by Tadeusz Miciński of the poem "Song of the Night" by 13th century Persian poet Jalaluddin Rumi. Although the symphony is in a single movement, it can be subdivided into three contrasting phases corresponding roughly to an invocation, scherzo and finale. The composer described his Third Symphony in a letter to Alexander Siloti, who was planning to lead its premiere:
"The 'Symphony' lasts 20-22 m. and it could be called a symphonic poem. (Its other title is Chant de la Nuit [...]). However, as I am organically averse to 'Symphonic poems' (as a title), it had better stayed a symphony (the third one in order). [...] The tenor's solo in the 'Symph.' is very significant and lasts for a little less than half of the symphony's duration. It seems a very satisfying material for a singer; it is more melodic than declamatory and takes quite a big and graceful, lyrically coloured voice. The choir is rather episodic, except for the initial part, where it has a major role; the style is more harmon[ic] than polyphon[ic]; there is no text in several places."
Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, the English pianist-composer of Parsi parentage, wrote of the impression Szymanowski's Third Symphony made on him:
"Szymanowski took a poem celebrating the beauty, the enigmatic and transcendental beauty of the Eastern night, the like of which one never sees anywhere in Europe, except Sicily which belongs just as much to the East as it does to the West. Based on this poem, he wrote music with a radiant purity of spirit, elevated ecstasy of expression, music permeated with the very essence of the choicest and rarest specimens of Iranian art - the entire score glows with a wonderful colour, rich but never blinding, nor severe, like Persian paintings or silk rugs - this intuition is unprecedented in Western music."

This took him from immersion in the dense fugal thinking of Reger to a shadowing of the mature Scriabin’s startling transformation during the first decade of the twentieth century and the leavening, salutary influence of Ravel’s and Debussy’s weightless, diaphanous textures. Devotion to a national tradition dropped from the picture early on, and it is a wider significance, not intrinsic Polishness, that distinguishes Szymanowski in posterity.
The piano was an integral part of Karol Szymanowski’s musical life. He was seven when he began his first lessons on the instrument, studying initially with his father and then with his uncle, Gustav Neuhaus—whose son, Genryk (Heinrich or Harry), Szymanowski’s cousin, was later to be the teacher of Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels and Radu Lupu. The Nine Preludes, Op 1, some of which may have been written when he was only fourteen, attracted the support of Artur Rubinstein, a valuable early champion. It was the third of his Four Études, Op 4, that brought Szymanowski his first taste of popular success. Throughout his life, his music was written at the piano, and it was playing the piano that fed him in a particularly difficult period of his career, in 1932–35; indeed, the Sinfonia Concertante, his Fourth Symphony, written in 1932, became a vehicle for his own performance—he was a highly capable pianist, though no virtuoso.

Throughout his life, his music was written at the piano, and it was playing the piano that fed him in a particularly difficult period of his career, in 1932–35; indeed, the Sinfonia Concertante, his Fourth Symphony, written in 1932, became a vehicle for his own performance—he was a highly capable pianist, though no virtuoso.

Tymoszówka, the family estate in Ukraine, was overrun and trashed, and the composer spent two traumatic years in Elisavetgrad, taking stock in a novel, The Ephebe (now lost), reading widely, and guarding the door against thugs. But the Revolution also brought about Polish independence the following year, and the Szymanowskis were able to return to Poland on Christmas eve 1919. A number of incomplete and unpublished works date from this period -- a sort of musical stammering. Szymanowski did not again hit his stride as a composer until 1921 -- and in quite a different vein (indebted to Stravinsky's example) -- with the song cycle Slopiewnie, which incorporated folk elements in an evocation of a "Lechitic" or ancestral, tribal, Polish consciousness. From 1922, he began to spend as much time as possible in Zakopane, a resort in the Tatra mountains, and to absorb the raucous, improvised, archaic music of the highlanders, which informs the works of his final period. Among these, the 20 Mazurkas, composed over 1924-25, exhibit the sophisticated primitivism of his late style in its most etched, unequivocal form. Over the drones in open fifths and pedal points of minor seconds typical of Tatra music, he weaves a discourse of modal and bitonal inflections, with ever-varying, seemingly improvised melodic ornamentation, set off by the mazurka's characteristic rhythmic bounce. A number of them open with a tentative melodic tendril -- a sort of falling highland call -- before giving way to exuberance escalating to delirium. A droll garrulity, albeit astringently strutted, shimmers from pungency to piquancy, rendering this potentially hermetic idiom accessible and poised as a twentieth century Polish response to the mazurkas of Chopin. Karol Szymanowski,Symphony No.3 ("Song of the Night").
Karol Szymanowski composed his Symphony No. 3 (in B flat major), Op. 27, The Song of the Night during 1914-16 after a period spent travelling in Eastern Europe. It is considered to be one of his finest works. The symphony is a musical setting of a poem by the 13th-century Persian mystic Jalal ud-Din Rumi, supposed to celebrate the exceptional beauty of the Eastern night. The symphony is influenced by Richard Wagner's Tristan and Isolde and Szymanowski derives from Frédéric Chopin's use of chromatic harmony as in his nocturnes to depict the character of night. Another influence is Alexander Scriabin's symphonic poem, Prometheus from which the symphony derives a mystical aura, its one-movement symphonic design, its (partly) wordless chorus, the large orchestra, its climactic organ and its us... -

I am supposed to be interviewing the dark prince of rock, the grotesque goth who, as legend has it, is vampire, zombie and demon rolled into one.
And it's already the strangest interview ever. I expected him to be a bit weird - but not like this.
I also expected the shock rocker to be highly articulate. From other interviews I've watched, I know he can be the intelligent voice of a troubled generation.

Inside, wearing a plain black hoodie and his usual morbid pallor, he's in high spirits, joking with his band and the studio crew.
As we start, it becomes clear that he can't or doesn't want to give coherent answers, except for those that end with comments about sex, violence or preferably both.
His preoccupation is such that I have heavily edited his comments to cut out large chunks that are lurid, graphic and frankly disturbing.
I'm doing the interview with a colleague, Adrian from BBC 6 Music. Manson starts by ripping the foam cover off the end of Adrian's microphone, before being asked about his fans.
"My fans? There's no fans because I was very hot in my room." Adrian tries again, to which Manson responds: "Ceiling fans or standalone?"
There is a glint in his eye. He's toying with us, but his comments are also unnervingly lewd and random.
He carries straight on. "Is that a cellphone?" he says looking at my recording device. It's clearly not a cellphone. "Can I call you?" He then makes the first offer of a fight, not delivered aggressively, but more as a polite, jovial invitation.
Adrian asks him about the Download festival, where Manson is playing this summer. "You said load. And down," Manson interrupts, as if they're the dirtiest words in the world.
I ask my first question, and try to change tack. Can he remember the first time that he performed musically? His weird different-sized eyeballs peer out from under his hood.
"The first time I performed musically I threw up."
When was that?
"Last night. But no, the first time, I had stage fright. I was afraid of the stages and frightening and The Frighteners, which was a bad movie with, what's his name, Michael J Fox.
"So I would say the last time I had what was the question?"
Next, I try asking where he currently lives. The answer is rambling, peppered with rude words and references to sexual violence. He also starts making weird fluttery whistling noises half-way through.
The answer finishes with: "Et cetera and so forth and so on and wow and [more fluttering] I like to speak in those kind of terms."
It's getting curiouser and curiouser. So I ask about the film he's supposedly working on, in which he is playing Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll.
"I'm playing him always in life," he replies. "I wrote a script about him because I read his diaries and it was about aphasia to the sky, the sky, left, right, and that's me.
"So I almost quit music because I didn't want to do any more so I want to put it all into film. Right now I'm in love with film. But filming myself. And I'm playing Marilyn Manson."
What stage is the film at? Have you shot any of it?
"No, I shot at someone. But that was a firearm and it was not exactly legal. But I was exonerated from the crime."
I hope and pray that he's joking and plough on. After Adrian asks him about one of his heroes, Iggy Pop, I ask why he didn't quit music but decided to release a new album.
"It was me realising that that's what I do best," he says. "That's not always good, but that's what I do best, worst. Me being Marilyn Manson, rock star, et cetera, that's what I do."
So is the film ever going to I don't have time to finish my question.
"You want a fight? A film?" he interjects.
The film, I affirm.
"The film," he repeats, before things degenerate again.
Manson manages to answer a question about Motley Crue a bit more coherently, then, thankfully, the interview is brought to a close in less than 10 minutes.
At the time, it was in parts surreal, awkward and amusing. In hindsight, it seems a bit more disturbing. Not scary though. Just sad.

I'm doing the interview with a colleague, Adrian from BBC 6 Music. Manson starts by ripping the foam cover off the end of Adrian's microphone, before being asked about his fans.
"My fans? There's no fans because I was very hot in my room." Adrian tries again, to which Manson responds: "Ceiling fans or standalone?"
There is a glint in his eye. He's toying with us, but his comments are also unnervingly lewd and random.
He carries straight on. "Is that a cellphone?" he says looking at my recording device. It's clearly not a cellphone. "Can I call you?" He then makes the first offer of a fight, not delivered aggressively, but more as a polite, jovial invitation.
Adrian asks him about the Download festival, where Manson is playing this summer. "You said load. And down," Manson interrupts, as if they're the dirtiest words in the world.
I ask my first question, and try to change tack. Can he remember the first time that he performed musically? His weird different-sized eyeballs peer out from under his hood.
"The first time I performed musically I threw up."
When was that?
"Last night. But no, the first time, I had stage fright. I was afraid of the stages and frightening and The Frighteners, which was a bad movie with, what's his name, Michael J Fox.
"So I would say the last time I had what was the question?"
Next, I try asking where he currently lives. The answer is rambling, peppered with rude words and references to sexual violence. He also starts making weird fluttery whistling noises half-way through.
The answer finishes with: "Et cetera and so forth and so on and wow and [more fluttering] I like to speak in those kind of terms."
It's getting curiouser and curiouser. So I ask about the film he's supposedly working on, in which he is playing Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll.
"I'm playing him always in life," he replies. "I wrote a script about him because I read his diaries and it was about aphasia to the sky, the sky, left, right, and that's me.
"So I almost quit music because I didn't want to do any more so I want to put it all into film. Right now I'm in love with film. But filming myself. And I'm playing Marilyn Manson."
What stage is the film at? Have you shot any of it?
"No, I shot at someone. But that was a firearm and it was not exactly legal. But I was exonerated from the crime."
I hope and pray that he's joking and plough on. After Adrian asks him about one of his heroes, Iggy Pop, I ask why he didn't quit music but decided to release a new album.
"It was me realising that that's what I do best," he says. "That's not always good, but that's what I do best, worst. Me being Marilyn Manson, rock star, et cetera, that's what I do."
So is the film ever going to I don't have time to finish my question.
"You want a fight? A film?" he interjects.
The film, I affirm.
"The film," he repeats, before things degenerate again.
Manson manages to answer a question about Motley Crue a bit more coherently, then, thankfully, the interview is brought to a close in less than 10 minutes.
At the time, it was in parts surreal, awkward and amusing. In hindsight, it seems a bit more disturbing. Not scary though. Just sad.
