In China, common names for China include Zhonghua (中华/中華) and Zhongguo (中国/中國), while Han (汉/漢) and Tang (唐) are common names given for the Chinese ethnicity. Other names include Huaxia, Shenzhou and Jiuzhou. The People's Republic of China (PRC) and Republic of China ("Taiwan") are official names given for the two contemporary sovereign states currently claiming sovereignty over the traditional area of China. "Mainland China" is used to refer to areas under the jurisdiction by the PRC usually excluding Hong Kong and Macau.
In other parts of the world, many names of China exist, mainly transliterations of the dynasties "Qin" or "Jin" (e.g. China, Sino), and Han or Tang. There are also names for China based on a certain ethnic group other than Han, much like the Western rendering of all Arabs as "Saracens". Examples include "Cathay" based on the Khitan and "Tabgach" based on the Tuoba.
In mainland China, the term Zhongguo is used to refer to all territories claimed by the PRC, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

India Names Special Envoy for China Border Talks
India on Monday named its powerful national security adviser as a special envoy on China, opening the way for resumption of talks on the disputed border, where tensions have risen in recent months over border patrols and stiffer defenses. Ajit Doval, a close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will lead the negotiations to try to reach a settlement on dispute over the 21-hundred 75-mile border that has clouded rapidly expanding commercial links. China lays claim to more than 35-thousand square miles disputed by New Delhi in the eastern sector of the Himalayas.

So many companies and products are now seeing huge market potential and moving into China.Apple is an example of a company that doesn’t use a Chinese name, even though most people in China call it 苹果. But not everybody has the same brand recognition that Apple has.
But how do you translate a brand name? An English name carries with it many associations and connotations to native speakers of the language which simply can’t be carried straight across into Chinese. Chines

STORYLINE:
Japan said on August 1st 2014 that it will name five uninhabited islands, which form part of the Senkaku, or Diaoyu, island group in the East China Sea, in a move likely to spark anger from other claimants China and Taiwan.
They are among 158 uninhabited islands to be named on Friday as Japan steps up protection and claims over border islands and waters around them.
The government's maritime policy department said it will publish a list of all the names on its website later on August 1st.
The five islands, which are known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, are also claimed by China and Taiwan and remain a regional flashpoint.
The names will be used for new maps.
The islands are within Japan's established exclusive economic zone and will not change maritime boundaries.

Tourists have become unlikely foot soldiers for China in a dispute with Vietnam over the Paracel Islands.
Rising from the South China Sea, the islands appear remote and barren, but they are a geopolitical battleground between the two countries.
Chinese tourists, who make the 20-hour voyage to the islands the Chinese call the Xisha, play a vital part in Beijing's claim to them.
The five-day round trip cruise from the southern island of Hainan to the islands and back is a vacation taken by thousands of Chinese each year.
Travelling with a ship full of tourists, The Associated Press is the first foreign news organisation permitted to visit the disputed islands.
Visitors said they had each waited months for permission to join the tour and then spent from 1,200 US dollars to about 2,000 US dollars to visit, making do with the bland cabbage and noodles on board ships taking them there and blackouts of cell-phone service.
"This is Chinese territory and we can come and go whenever we want. It's none of the other countries' business," said tourist Zhang Jing, who proudly sported a Chinese flag.
Forty years ago, China seized the islands from Vietnam by military force, but Vietnam still claims the islands known as Hoang Sa in Vietnamese.
The discovery of oil near the island chain led Beijing to move an oil drilling rig near the islands - setting off a series of confrontations between Chinese and Vietnamese coast guards.
Beijing believes that as much as a third of China's oil reserves may be found in the South China Sea.
Vessels from the two sides repeatedly rammed each other near the rig in May and the standoff triggered deadly anti-China protests and riots in Vietnam.
Under international law, China must also prove a civilian - and not just a military - use for the islands to claim sovereignty.
Hence, tourism has become more about politics than mere pleasure.
The tourists come for the scenery and beaches, but they also know they're helping promote China's claims of sovereignty.
To strengthen that claim further, China also subsidises fishermen to live on and fish off the islands for a part of the year, enabling them to sell dried fish to the tourists who visit.

Chinese is made up of individual characters, which may have many different meanings and pronunciations. Put together, they might sound like a foreign name, but mean something completely different. And Chinese characters also have different pronunciations in different dialects, so a name that is pronounced one way in Beijing may sound completely different in Hong Kong, for example. These are all challenges you have to face.
There are basically 3 options for creating a Chinese name for a company or brand.
1. Use the standard Chinese characters that sound most like your English name.
2. Use Chinese characters which together sound like the English name and also have positive meanings.
3. Create a Chinese name that might not sound like your English name, but which create the right brand message.
creating an effective brand name in Chinese is a very creative process. Something which sounds good to one person may sound terrible to somebody else, so it’s always a good idea to get a lot of different opinions from native speakers, but if you get a great Chinese name, it can be the key to your success.

The Chinese government evaluated all the new Chinese character top-level domains (TLDs) and decided that dot Chinese online (.在线) and dot Chinese website (中文网) would earn their support and investment.
So they registered 10,226 domain names in each TLD, primarily for geographic uses, and the China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has made it a requirement that all Chinese government websites must transition to fully-Chinese domain names.
With this type of government support, might these two internationalized domain names (IDNs) be attractive to non-Chinese investors? One Sherpa thinks so. In this interview we delve into the details of why the IDNs are worthy of investment, how it all works, and how an investor would get started.
