Changing Your Name & Birthday

To change your birthday:

  1. Go to your profile and click Update Info on your cover photo
  2. Click Contact and Basic Info
  3. Scroll down and click Edit next to Birth Date or Birth Year (you'll need to hover over the info you want to edit for the Edit option to appear)
  4. Use the dropdown menus to change your birthday
  5. Click Save Changes

You can change who can see your birthday by adjusting the audience. There are 2 audience selectors next to your birthday: one for the day and month and one for the year. Friends won't get a notification about your upcoming birthday if you don't share the day and month with them.

Note: There's a limit to how many times you can change your birthday. If you've recently changed it, you may have to wait a few days before you can edit it again.

Facebook is a community where people use their authentic identities. We require people to provide the name they use in real life; that way, you always know who you're connecting with. This helps keep our community safe.

Please refrain from adding any of these to your name:

  • Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation.
  • Characters from multiple languages.
  • Titles of any kind (ex: professional, religious).
  • Words, phrases or nicknames in place of a middle name.
  • Offensive or suggestive words of any kind.

Other things to keep in mind:

  • The name you use should be your authentic identity; as your friends call you in real life and as our acceptable identification forms would show.
  • Nicknames can be used as a first or middle name if they're a variation of your authentic name (like Bob instead of Robert).
  • You can also list an additional name on your account (ex: maiden name, nickname, professional name).
  • Profiles are for individual use only. We offer Pages for professional personas, organizations and businesses.
  • Pretending to be anything or anyone isn't allowed.

If your authentic name isn’t listed on your account, please change your name. If you're unable to change it, learn more.

You may be having trouble changing your name if:

  • Your name doesn't follow our name policy
  • You changed your name in the last 60 days
  • You were previously asked to confirm your name on Facebook

You can also add another name (ex: maiden name, nickname) to your profile. If your first and last name isn’t listed on your account and you’re unable to change it, let us know.

You can't change your name right now because you've changed it too recently. After 60 days, you'll be able to change your name again.

Facebook is a community where people use their authentic identities. We limit how often people can change their name, so you always know who you're connecting with. This helps keep our community safe.

If you'd like to list a second name on your account (ex: maiden name, nickname, professional name), you can add another name to your profile.

If you want to list your professional title, you can add it to your profile in addition to your primary name. Professional titles aren't allowed as part of your primary name.

If you'd like to have a professional presence on Facebook (ex: Ms. Smith's 9th Grade Science Class), we recommend creating a Page or group. This will help you connect with the right audience and keep your professional life separate from your personal life.

If you checked the box to display your other name on your profile, it will appear in parentheses next to your full name at the top of your profile. Your other name will also be visible in the About section of your profile, when people search for you and when you send friend requests.

If you have a large number of public followers, you may have the option to verify your account and display your other name on the top of your profile, with your authentic name in the About section.

Facebook requires everyone to provide their authentic names so you always know who you're connecting with. If you'd like your account to show another name you're known by, you can add that name to your account. For example, you could add:

  • Your nickname
  • Your title or professional name
  • Your maiden name

Please remember that other names must follow the Facebook Community Standards, and they can't contain:

  • Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation
  • Characters from multiple languages
  • Offensive or suggestive words of any kind

Language-specific Names

A language-specific name is the name you use on Facebook as it appears in another language. Here are some examples of language-specific names:

  • Hanako Yamada / 山田花子
  • Chen WeiJie / 陳偉傑
  • Young Hee Kim / 김영희
  • Marina Petrova / Марина Петрова

When you add a language-specific name to your profile, people will see your name in the way that's most natural for them. So if they use Facebook in the same language as your language-specific name, that's what they'll see. Everyone else will see the name you signed up with. Like all names on Facebook, your language-specific name is always public.

Note: Right now, language-specific names are only available in a few countries.

  1. Click in the top right and select Settings
  2. Click the Name section
  3. Click add or change your language-specific name
  4. Enter your name as it appears in another language in the language-specific name fields
  5. Enter your Password and click Save Changes

Note: You'll only see the option to add a language-specific name if you have that language listed on your account. Learn how to list a language on your account. Right now, language-specific names are only available in a few countries.

This might be because the name you requested doesn't follow our name standards. Keep in mind that the language-specific name should be your authentic name in that language as it would be listed on your credit card or student ID. If you've read our name policies and think that your name was rejected by mistake, let us know.
