Extra Security Features

Where You're Logged In

The Where You're Logged In section of your Security Settings page shows you a list of browsers and devices that have been used to log in to your account recently. Each entry includes the date, time and approximate location when signing in, as well as the type of device used to access your account. You'll also see the option to End Activity and log yourself out on that computer, phone or tablet.

Note: The location you see is based off of the IP address used to access your account. If you want to know the specific IP information of a login, simply hover your mouse over that session’s location data.

For more information on how to use this feature, check out this Facebook Security note.

If you see a location that you don't recognize, first check to see if this session is connected to your mobile device. Often, when signing in through a mobile device, you're routed through an IP address that doesn’t actually reflect your physical location.

If you don't recognize a location and it's not connected to a mobile login, it could be because:

  • We have inaccurate information: We can only provide an approximate location so our information will be wrong sometimes.
  • You forgot to log off: If you think you've left yourself logged in on someone else’s device, click the End Activity link to the right of that session info to log yourself out.
  • Someone else has access to your Facebook account: If you think someone else is logged into your account, end the suspicious session by clicking End Activity (or Remove on mobile) next to the session info. After you end the session, change your password to secure your Facebook account.

App Passwords

App passwords are one-time passwords you can use to log in to your apps and help keep your Facebook password safe. If you have login approvals turned on, you won't have to wait to receive a code when you use an app password. Instead, you can skip login approvals and log in immediately.

To get an app password:

  1. Go to your Security Settings
  2. In the App Passwords section, click Edit
  3. Click Generate app passwords and then follow the on-screen instructions

Note: We'll save a list of the apps you generate app passwords for, but we won’t save the passwords. If you log out of any of your apps, generate a new password.

Login Approvals

Login approvals are a security feature similar to login alerts, but with an extra security step. If you turn on login approvals, you'll be asked to enter a special security code each time you try to access your Facebook account from a new computer, phone or browser.

To turn on login approvals:

  1. Go to your Security Settings
  2. Click the Login Approvals section
  3. Check the box and click Save Changes

After you turn on login approvals:

  • If you haven't saved the device (ex: computer) or browser you're using, you'll be asked to do so when you turn on login approvals. This way you won't have to enter a code when you log in from any of your recognized devices or browsers. Don't click Save this browser if you're using a public computer (ex: a library computer).
  • We need to be able to remember your computer and browser information so we can recognize it next time you log in. Some browser features block this. If you've turned on private browsing or set up your browser to clear your history every time it closes, you might have to enter a code every time you log in. Learn more.

Note: You need to have a mobile phone number listed on your account to turn on login approvals. You can add one to your account when you turn on login approvals.

If you've turned on login approvals, there are 3 different ways you can collect your login code:

  • We'll send you a text message (SMS) with a login code each time you need one
  • You can get 10 codes to print, write down or save for when you need them
  • You can use Code Generator (if you have the Facebook app on your smartphone or tablet) or use another app that generates codes

Code Generator is part of an extra security feature called login approvals. If you turn on login approvals, you'll be asked for a unique security code each time you try to log into your Facebook account from a new computer or mobile phone. That way, nobody can log into your account without a code and password. Learn more about login approvals.

Code Generator is a part of the Facebook app and creates a security code every 30 seconds, even when you aren't connected to the internet. You'll use that code in addition to your password to log into Facebook. You can also use Code Generator if you ever need to reset your password.

To get your code on your Android:

  1. From your Facebook app, tap
  2. Scroll down and tap Code Generator
  3. Use the code to log into Facebook

To get your code on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. From your Facebook app, tap More on your iPhone or on your iPad
  2. Scroll down and tap Code Generator
  3. Use the code to log into Facebook

If you're having trouble receiving your login code, wait a few minutes and then request a new code by clicking the Resend Code link. For more tips on troubleshooting, click I can’t get my code. If you're still unable to get your code after multiple tries, you can report the issue.

Note: You can get 10 codes to use when you don't have your phone. You can also activate our Code Generator if you have the Facebook app on your smartphone or tablet.

If you're being asked to enter a login code and you can’t access your phone:

  • Try logging into Facebook from a computer or phone that you’ve already linked to your account (ex: one of your recognized devices)
  • Use one of your saved codes
  • If you're still stuck, file a report

Once you’ve logged in you can add a new mobile number to your account or turn off login approvals.

With login approvals and login alerts, we need to be able to remember your computer and browser information so we can recognize it next time you log in. Some browser features block this. If you turned on private browsing or set up your browser to clear your history every time it closes, you might have to enter a code every time you log in. Learn more.

Check out your browser's instructions on how to turn these features off:

If you have login approvals turned on, you'll be asked to review recent logins anytime someone tries to log into your account and doesn't enter the login code. We'll show you where this happened, and you can let us know whether it was you (by clicking This is Okay) or not. If it was you, you'll have the option to name and save the device you were trying to log in from.

Remember to only choose the Save this device option if that device belongs to you. If you don't recognize the login, follow the directions provided to secure your account. After you get back into your account, please review these security tips.

Note: If you have login approvals turned on and you're asked to enter a code every time you log in from a saved device, you may need to change your browser settings.

Login Notifications

Login alerts are an extra security feature. When you turn on login alerts, we'll send you a text message, email or notification each time someone logs into your account from a new place.

To turn on login alerts:

  1. Go to your Security Settings
  2. Click the Login Alerts section
  3. Check the box next to the type of alert (ex: text message) you'd like to receive and select Save Changes

Keep in mind that you need to add a mobile number to your account to receive text alerts.

After you turn on login alerts:

  • You can save a device or browser to your list of trusted browsers or recognized devices. This way, you won't have to keep getting alerts about the computer or mobile phone you usually use to log into Facebook. Don't choose this option if you're using a public computer.
  • If you ever receive a login alert from an unfamiliar browser or location, follow the instructions in the notification to reset your password and secure your account.

Trusted Browsers includes a list of the browsers and devices (ex: your computer, your iPhone) that you've logged in from before and marked as trusted. You won't get notified about logins or have to confirm your identity from these devices.

You can view and edit the list of browsers, phones and tablets linked to your Facebook account by clicking Trusted Browsers in your security settings.

One-Time Passwords

You can use a one-time password to log into your account anytime you feel uncomfortable entering your real password on Facebook (ex: in a library or internet cafe). Here's how:

  1. If you're in the US, send a text message to 32665 with the message otp. If you're not in the US, check out this list to see which mobile carriers support this feature and what number you should use.
  2. If your mobile number is already linked to your Facebook account, we'll reply with a unique, 8-character temporary password. If you haven't added this mobile number to your account, we'll send you an email with instructions on how to add it and collect your code.
  3. Once you get your code, just enter it in the Password section of the Facebook login page.

Your one-time password will be valid for 20 minutes and can't be reused.

Note: One-time passwords are not available if you have login approvals turned on.

You may see the Protect Your Password message if you try to log into Facebook from a public place (ex: library or internet cafe). These computers sometimes have harmful software on them.

In order to protect your security, we recommend using a one-time password to log into Facebook from these places, or anytime you feel uncomfortable entering your Facebook password.

Trusted Contacts

Trusted contacts are friends you can reach out to if you ever need help getting into your Facebook account (ex: you forget your Facebook password and can’t get into your email account to reset it).

After you set up trusted contacts, next time you can't get into your account your trusted contacts can access special, one-time security codes from Facebook via a URL. You can then call your friends to get the security codes and use those codes to access your account.

To add trusted contacts to your account:

  1. Go to your Security Settings
  2. Click on the Trusted Contacts section
  3. Click Choose Trusted Contacts
  4. Choose 3-5 friends and confirm your choices

To edit or remove trusted contacts from your account, follow steps 1 through 3 and click Edit next to your trusted contacts.

Learn how to use your trusted contacts to get back into your account.

If you're locked out of your account, you can use trusted contacts to get access to your account. If you have trusted contacts set up:

  1. Click Forgot your password? and find your account.
  2. Follow the instructions to use your trusted contacts to get back into your account.
  3. You'll receive a set of instructions that includes a URL. The URL contains a special security code that only your trusted contacts can access. Call your friends and give them the URL so that they can open the link and give the security code to you.
  4. Use the security codes from your friends to access your account.

If you don't have trusted contacts set up, learn how.

Please be sure to call your friends or talk to them in person. If your account was hacked, the hacker could have access to your emails as well.

You can pick up to 5 of your Facebook friends to be your trusted contacts. We recommend choosing friends that you can easily call for help if there's ever a problem with your account. Be sure to choose people you can get in touch with off of Facebook. You can edit this list anytime.

We have security measures in place to make sure your account is safe when you use your friends to help you get back into your account. Some safety precautions we take include:

  • Asking you to pick different kinds of friends (ex: coworkers, classmates, family) to help you recover your account if you haven't added trusted contacts to your account
  • Imposing a 24-hour wait period after you use friends to recover your account

To help keep your account even more secure, choose your trusted contacts ahead of time and make sure the people you choose are people you know in real life. Learn more about using trusted contacts.
