STORYLINE
The British supply ship Sir Galahad docked at the hard-won port of Umm Qasr, in Iraq, on Friday, loaded with the first military shipment of relief aid for Iraqi civilians.
The bulk of the aid was donated by Britain, and military officials will soon fan into Iraqi villages to assess relief needs.
Also Friday, two trucks of Kuwaiti aid arrived in the border town of Safwan.
As during aid distribution on Wednesday, there was a near-riot as about 500 people engulfed the trucks, ripped open the cargo doors and emptied them of boxes of bottled water, cheese and other food in about 10-15 minutes.
00:02 Humanitarian workers fear a real tragedy in Iraq unless aid can get through soon to the civilian population.
00:08 UPSOUND Crowd
00:10 These chaotic scenes in southern Iraq could easily become a feature across the country.
00:15 Thousands of aid parcels were taken by the Kuwaiti Red Crescent to the town of Safwan.
But British troops could only look on as the trucks were mobbed but desperate young men.
00:26 Residents in Safwan said they've been reduced to drinking muddy water out of ditches and puddles.
00:34 U.S. Navy dolphins have been enroled in efforts to help aid get delivered.
Earlier this week two Iraqi mines were discovered in the channel leading to the port of Umm Qasr in the south, delaying the arrival of ships.
Coalition generals have for a long time said opening the docks at Umm Qasr would enable a sea-borne relief operation.
The mine-detecting dolphins have helped British and Australian divers clear a path.
01:05 The Sir Galahad, a British Royal Navy ship loaded with humanitarian supplies, has now been able to reach Umm Qasr port.
Troops quickly went about unloading Sir Galahad's precious cargo.
Around 300 tons of water, sugar, beans, and flour - now one step closer to the people who need it.

STORYLINE:
Prisoners of war from both the 1980 Iran-Iraq war and this year's US-led military campaign against Iraq were being returned to their families on Tuesday.
Fifty-nine Iraqis held prisoner in Iran since the end of the war between the two countries 15 years ago, flew from Tehran to Baghdad on Monday, accompanied by representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), including a doctor and a nurse.
Iraqi Army Lieutenant, Mohammed Ahmed, who spent a total of 21 years inside Iranian jails, I said he had had no contact with his family over those years.
After spending the night in a Baghdad hotel, the freed prisoners were taken to meet their families.
The issue of the remaining POWs soured relations between Iran and Saddam Hussein's government for years, with each country accusing the other of concealing how many people it held.
The prisoners' return resulted from negotiations between the Iranian authorities and the ICRC, following the end of hostilities in Iraq.
Coalition troops on Tuesday also released about 250 Iraqi prisoners of war from this year's conflict from a camp near the port of Umm Qasr.
Buses were to drop them off at various parts of the country. They've each been given five dollars to pay for the rest of their journey home.
Most of those being held at the camp were officers in the Iraqi army, although there are also some looters.
At its peak, the camp held about seven thousand prisoners.
The President of the ICRC, Jakob Kellenberger, who is currently in Baghdad, says he estimates there about 3000 POWs and civilian internees left in camps in Iraq.
The ICRC has said conditions at the camp are good and the prisoners say they've been well treated by their captors.
But they have not been allowed access to all civilian internees.

STORYLINE:
As the United States hinted that as many as 120,000 more troops could to be deployed to Iraq, a massive convoy of US military vehicles, ammunition and troops was seen on Friday crossing the border from Kuwait into southern Iraq.
News of the deployment came after the Iraqis promised their capital would become a graveyard for the coalition.
As US officials admitted it could take months to defeat Saddam Hussein's regime, a British military spokesman said the southern Iraqi city of Basra is "clearly nowhere near" under control.
There was no official confirmation from Washington about the 120,000 more troops reportedly being sent to the region, although the total is believed to include the 40,000 officially announced yesterday.
The reinforcements are being sent after the Iraqis put up stiffer than expected resistance and prevented a smaller, fast-moving coalition force scoring a rapid walkover.
Pentagon officials said there were only 90,000 troops currently in Iraq.
At Fort Hood in Texas about 12,500 soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division began departing for duty in the Gulf.
It is the first major element to move out from Fort Hood, the nation's largest military post. If the division sees combat, it will be the first time since Vietnam.
The 4th Infantry Division is considered the Army's most modern heavy division, equipped with a sophisticated computer systems linking all its vehicles.
The soldiers were supposed to deploy to Turkey in February to open a northern front against Iraq, but the Turkish government refused to grant access.

STORYLINE:
Iraq's only deep water port has reopened to commercial shipping, clearing the way for large-scale imports of consumer goods and the materials needed to repair its war-battered infrastructure.
US officials said the opening of Umm Qasr on Monday followed dredging operations to clear the harbour of war wreckage, mainly from the eight-year Iran-Iraq war.
Three people central to the port's reopening - southeast regional coordinator for the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance, Ole Woehlers Olsen, USAID administrator, Andrew Nazios, and head of Umm Qasr port, Abdul Razak Hassan - officiated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The USAID administrator said the reopening of Umm Qasr symbolised the opening of Iraq to private investment and private sector economic growth.
The port on the Kuwaiti border has received humanitarian shipments since March.
On Sunday, Iraqi customs officials returned to duty after receiving two weeks training from British military units, allowing the port to officially open some of its 21 berths to commercial shipping.
More than 50 uniformed customs officers, plainclothes officers and support staff have returned to duty, after receiving two weeks training from British military units stationed at Umm Qasr.
Umm Qasr, a town of about 50-thousand people, was one of the first military objectives for coalition troops at the outbreak of war in March.
British forces who took charge of the city handed it over to a civilian administration one month ago.
The port's opening came two weeks after the Coalition Provisional Authority, the US-led interim civil administration in Iraq, suspended tariffs and trade restrictions on most goods entering or leaving the country, effectively making it a free-trade zone.

Since the end of the war the RAN has continuously maintained a frigate in the Persian Gulf to protect Iraq's oil infrastructure and participate in counter-smuggling operations. Twelve Australian sailors were deployed to Umm Qasr, Iraq between January and October 2004 to join the multi-national training team working with the Iraqi Coastal Defense Force. Coalition forces on Sunday continued to mop up small pockets of Iraqi resistance in the Umm Qasr seaport.
US marines were reportedly told to expect light resistance at Umm Qasr when they landed at dawn on Friday.
They were hoping to secure the port town within a few hours but still faced
resistance more than two days later.
Most Iraqi troops surrendered but a small group, thought to number 30 to 40,
reportedly continued to put up a fight.
The port is of strategic importance and coalition troops are hoping to use it for humanitarian shipments.

STORYLINE:
British Royal Engineers in southern Iraq Thursday began to deliver on a promise to provide that most precious of commodities to a shell-shattered community - clean, fresh running water.
Their task may be small in scale but in significance it is enormous. It is the first project to be undertaken as part of the coalition pledge of humanitarian aid in the wake of war.
As soon as gunfire ceased echoing around the small port town, the Royal Engineers, moved in with a bulldozer and digger.
The children who surround them with outstretched hands may be the generation to rebuild Iraq, but for now they need water more than anything else.
The pipeline, snaking across the desert from Kuwait, will bring it to them. The water is the gift of the Kuwaiti government to a people who were once invaders.
It is the British who are providing the means of delivering it as part of a "hearts and minds" exercise aimed at helping Iraqi civilians to recover from the ravages of conflict.
The people of Umm Qasr say they have not had any running water for five days, ever since the mains supply from Basra was severed in a bombardment. An impoverished community already living on the edge was in danger of being pushed over. What little water they have has been gathered from recent rainfall.
Another initiative is provision of medical facilities.
A British Royal Air Force doctor treated locals at farm house at what he hopes will be a series of clinics.
Squadron Leader Doctor Simon Chappel said that it was important to let the locals know that the coalition forces were "on the side of good" and by helping the sick and wounded they could win the battle for the hearts and minds of ordinary Iraqis.
Providing medical help to local communities is an established part of British military practice in order to establish friendly relations which commanders believe in turn helps with the gathering of intelligence.
British soldiers are also engaged in making the land more safe by searching for an disarming landmines.
There are thousands of landmines said to be dotted all over the desert, both anti-tank and anti-personnel mines. If stepped on or driven over the devices can kill, blind or dismember.

STORYLINE:
Iraqi soldiers have put up some of their fiercest resistance to date at the strategic Gulf port of Umm Qasr, in Iraq's oil rich south.
U-S and British troops faced street-to-street fighting against guerrillas, among them members of Saddam Hussein's Fedayeen, the Baath Party paramilitary organisation.
A British military spokesperson said some Iraqi troops had also changed into civilian clothing to blend in with the population, taking advantage of allied desire to minimize civilian casualties.
Some Coalition troops stayed behind to ensure the port at Umm Qasr would be secure for humanitarian shipments.
British and US officials said their forces were dealing with hundreds of Iraqi troops who had surrendered.
The prisoners, many poorly dressed, were being collected in holding areas, fed and given medical attention.
British forces found only seven oil wells burning, and confirmed the oil infrastructure at the vital Iraqi port had not been destroyed.

STORYLINE:
Dolphins, specially trained by the US Navy, are being used in Gulf coastal waters to help human divers locate any mines that may have been laid there by Iraqi forces.
Last week (March 28) dolphins could be seen out in the channel leading to Iraq's Umm Qasr port.
Although the docks were secured by coalition forces, it wasn't known how many mines had been laid by Iraqis in the sea channel leading to the port.
Only after the US Navy dolphins, and British and Australian divers, had cleared a path free of mines through the waters was the British Royal Navy ship, Sir Galahad, able to safely sail into Umm Qasr.
Sir Galahad was loaded with humanitarian supplies for Iraqi civilians.
The dolphins being used out in the Persian Gulf were trained at Marine Life in Gulfport, Mississippi.
The Navy says the dolphins work for next to nothing, just praise and a few fish.
Dolphins are well suited for mine detection since they have three-dimensional sonar so sensitive that no man-made sonar can duplicate it.
Dolphins have been used in the military since at least the Vietnam war.
But the training devised for their modern day use has a strange past.
The dolphins being used to find mines in Iraqi harbours were taught using methods initially designed to find the mythical 'Loch Ness Monster', in Scotland.
In the 1970s an American inventor from New Hampshire, Doctor Robert Rines, developed new technology and training methods in an effort to find the - still elusive - beast.
He strapped a sonar device and cameras to dolphins' fins.
If the dolphins approached a large, moving object, such as a prehistoric lake creature, the sonar would trigger the camera and then signal the dolphin to surface for a treat.
Rines' efforts in Scotland never panned out because one of his dolphins died.
But he shared his technology with the US Navy, which is using similar methods today.

British troops on Monday struggled to contain Iraqi civilians desperate to access water supplies near Zubayr, south of Basra.
Several villages to the south of Basra, including Zubayr, Safwan and Jabjud, have been without regular supplies of water and electricity for more than a week.
The British troops delivered the water from a tanker to the people of Zubayr as part of coalition efforts to win support for their military action.
Also on Monday, the British Royal Corps of Engineers opened the nozzle on a new water pipeline fed from a deep well in Kuwait and stretched across the border to the Iraqi port town, Umm Qasr.
Sixty-seven tanker trucks queued to fill-up with water which will be delivered to the area's 70-thousand residents.
The temporary pipeline will pump two (m) million litres of water daily, but the Royal Engineers are now working on the damaged municipal infrastructure in an attempt to restore water supplies to Iraqi homes.

They are not dancing in the streets. They are not waving flags. They are not cheering because they are still not sure we are not going to go away. And Saddam Hussein still looms over them large, and until Saddam Hussein is taken away they will not come out and sing and dance and wave flags, and quite frankly I don't blame them."

STORYLINE:
British military engineers restored electricity to the only town completely under coalition control in Iraq, Umm Qasr.
Iraq's only deep water port had been without power and water since the invasion of Iraq began nearly two weeks ago. Water was restored on Monday.
As of Tuesday, the town's electricity had been restored to 75 percent.
British Commander Colonel Steve Cox, a Royal Marines officer who is the de facto military governor of Umm Qasr said that the muted response received by coalition troops in the south is due to a lingering fear that the coalition will leave and Saddam Hussein's forces will return and kill thousands in a repeat of what happened in 1991.
Cox said that steps taken like providing security, water and electricity help to reassure Iraqis that coalition forces are there to help the population.

STORYLINE:
The United States launched a long-awaited massive campaign against Iraq from the air on Friday and pushed 100 miles (160 kilometers) into the country on the ground, a third of the way to Baghdad.
Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and his lieutenants are "starting to lose control of their country," Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said, speaking at the Pentagon shortly after the air bombardment began.
Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said "several hundred military targets will be hit over the coming hours."
Enormous explosions were visible around Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, even as American officials continued surrender talks with senior Iraqi officials.
The air campaign, which until Friday had been limited to selective strikes, escalated dramatically as U.S. ground forces rolled toward Baghdad.
Pentagon officials have dubbed the aerial strategy "shock and awe" to reflect the goal of paralyzing the Iraqi military and compelling Saddam's regime to capitulate before U.S. and allied forces reached the gates of
Baghdad.
Rumsfeld was asked if the bombing indicated no agreement had been reached with the Iraqi military on surrendering. "That's for sure," he said.

GWT: Aid convoy from Kuwait makes its way towards Umm Qasr

I like to be neutral in my new job, so obviously that's the policy of the Kuwaiti government, this is the desire of the Kuwaiti people to be the first to help the Iraqis. To prove that we have no hard feelings."
5. Convoy moving off
6. Various of convoy on road during sandstorm
STORYLINE:
A seven-truck relief convoy loaded with food and water from Kuwait arrived in the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr on Wednesday as allied forces struggled to clear the way for more aid shipments.
It was the first sizable relief convoy to reach Iraq.
The convoy's progress was hampered by a severe sandstorm.
It arrived in the dust-blown town 460 kilometres (280 miles) south of Baghdad with an escort from US marines.
Umm Qasr was brought under coalition control on Tuesday following stiff resistance from Iraqi fighters.
Plans to bring supplies to Iraqi civilians had been stalled for days because of fighting across southern Iraq.
U.S. officials have blamed Saddam's regime for slowing the flow of aid by placing mines in Umm Qasr's harbour, which serves much of the south. U.S. Navy helicopters flew two dolphins into Umm Qasr to help locate mines.
Umm Qasr is Iraq's main seaport on its short Gulf coastline, lies on the western side of the Fa Peninsula.
It handled vessels bringing food and other necessities under the UN-administered oil-for-food programme.
Coalition forces said they were reluctant to use heavy aerial bombardment to flatten the pockets of resistance for fear of destroying the port facilities, which they want to use to bring in humanitarian aid for southern Iraq.

And if we can provide some form of confidence to other nationalities, or indeed shipping owners, that this port is a safe port, that the passage-in is a safe passage-in, then by our actions and small contribution to the humanitarian aid that's probably going to flood in here -- I hope floods in here very soon -- then we've paved the way for that."

STORYLINE:
The British naval ship Sir Percival delivered the second shipment of humanitarian aid to the port of Umm Qasr on Monday.
The Sir Percival made its way up the waterway much slower than it would in normal circumstances.
With the waterway still threatened by Iraqi mines, Sir Percival took about 8 hours to travel the 60 kilometre (40 mile) route, led by the American minesweeper USS Ardent.
The Sir Percival brought 250 tonnes of rice as well as tea and a water purifier for the city of Umm Qasr.
With this second shipment of aid, the coalition hopes to show that the waterway to Umm Qasr is safe and that aid agencies and foreign governments will soon send further supplies to the port for delivery to Iraqi civilians.

Schools in Basra began reopening on Saturday amid signs that the city is slowly returning to normality.
Children in their last year of secondary school resumed classes although some classrooms had been looted and set on fire.
Meanwhile, petrol stations and food markets reopened under the watchful eye of British troops.
Elsewhere in Basra, desperately needed clean water finally reached the people on Saturday.
Czech army troops - working with the coalition forces in southern Iraq - brought six tankers of water and distributed it to local people.
British soldiers assisted with the water distribution.
They have been patrolling the water pipeline, directing local people to the tankers and away from places where they have broken into the pipes to divert water to their homes.
A train carrying much needed aid headed for Basra from Umm Qasr on Saturday.
The British army along with local Iraqi officials gathered to celebrate the departure of a train from the Southern port of Umm Qasr.
A military band played a number of tunes, from the traditional "When the Saints go Marching In" to the less conventional theme tune to the Austin Powers movies.
Local dignitaries said the way in which coalition forces were working with local officials to get Basra working again should serve as a model for the rest of the country.
Once on board, the British army and Iraqi officials enjoyed some local cuisine and what's considered a rare ride on a train in Iraq.
Iraq's rail network is not very extensive.
When the aid is unloaded in Basra, the train will return to Umm Qasr.

Paul Bremer, the American civilian administrator for Iraq toured the south of Iraq on Sunday.
He visited the Umm Qasr port where dredgers were clearing the Shatt al-Arab waterway for shipping.
The port is said to be suffering more from years of neglect than from war damage.
One estimate put the cost of repairs, equipment, payrolls and services the port needed at more than 15 (M) million (US) dollars.
USAID (United States Agency for International Development) is monitoring the two main contracting companies involved in the Umm Qasr port, Titan and Bechtel.

One estimate put the cost of repairs, equipment, payrolls and services the port needed at more than 15 (M) million (US) dollars.
USAID (United States Agency for International Development) is monitoring the two main contracting companies involved in the Umm Qasr port, Titan and Bechtel.

"Traditionally trains have not been used for passenger services in any great way in Iraq because the fuel is so cheap and people prefer to travel by road. So I understand there are only six services a day out of Baghdad. But it is vital that we get the wagons rolling in terms of reconstruction material and foodstuff so that we can distribute it around the country."

STORYLINE:
It's the first train to leave Baghdad station since the war - and a sign that Iraq is beginning to successfully rebuild its shattered infrastructure.
Before the US-led war damaged the tracks, trains used to run daily to Basra, Umm Qasr, Mosul and other destinations across the country.
Wednesday's train is headed for the southern port of Umm Qasr. On board are US military personnel who are going to make sure the route is safe and that no further repairs need to be carried out.
Hereafter, trains travelling between Umm Qasr and Baghdad will carry materials for the Iraq's reconstruction, as well as food supplies for distribution across the country.
Coalition forces paid railway workers an emergency payment this week to ensure they continue to turn up for work.
The US is still in the process of devising a regular system of payment, or salary for the workers.
