The Bangla Calendar (Bengali: বঙ্গাব্দ Bônggabdo or বাংলা সন Bangla Shôn) or Bangla calendar may refer to the sidereal solar used by the Bangla people in their calendar officially used in Bangladesh. The year begins on Pohela Boishakh, which falls on 14 April according to the tropical calendar in Bangladesh.
Bangabda Bangla calendar, also known as 'Bangla Sal', was promulgated by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1584 AD. The new calendar was initially known as Tarikh-e-Elahi and was introduced on 10 or 11 March 1584. Though the new calendar was promulgated in the twenty-ninth year of Akbar's reign, it dates from his ascension to the throne on 5 November 1556.
The purpose of Tarikh-e-Elahi was to glorify Akbar's ascent to the throne as well as to facilitate the collection of revenue. The Mughal emperors had been using the Hijri calendar for the purposes of collecting revenue. However, as Abul Fazl explains in Akbar Namah, the use of the Hijri calendar was irksome to the peasantry because there was a difference of 11 or 12 days between the lunar and the solar years, with 31 lunar years being equal to 30 solar years. Revenue was collected according to the lunar year, whereas the harvest was dependent on the solar one. From the beginning of his reign, Akbar had felt the need of introducing a uniform, scientific, and workable system of calculating days and months through a reformed calendar. With this end in view, he commissioned Amir Fathullah Shirazi, a distinguished scientist and astronomer, to make the changes.
Anupam Roy (Bengali: অনুপম রায়) is a Bengali lyricist, composer, singer and a guitarist. He is best known for his song Amake amar moto thakte dao (আমাকে আমার মত থাকতে দাও ), which appeared on the soundtrack to the 2010 film Autograph. He is also known for the songs "Ekbar Bol", "Gobhire Jao", "Tistaan" and "Beche Thakar Gaan" among others. Anupam has written and composed more than 150 Bengali songs.[citation needed]
Born and brought up in Calcutta ( Ancestral Home in Berhampore, West Bengal ), Anupam completed his schooling from St. Paul's Boarding & Day School, Kidderpore(Class X) and MP Birla Foundation, Behala (Class XII). He did his graduation in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He was the gold medalist of his batch. He used to work for Texas Instruments India, Bangalore as an analog circuit design engineer from 2004 (July) to 2011 (March).
Anupam has been writing songs from his childhood. His biggest break was having two of his songs featured in the Bengali film, Autograph (2010) by Srijit Mukherji. Anupam wrote and composed Bneche Thakaar Gaan (বেঁচে থাকার গান), sung by Rupam Islam and Amake Amar Moto Thakte Dao (আমাকে আমার মত থাকতে দাও ), which he sung himself. This song, though sung very off key, has a pathos in his voice, went on to become one of the biggest hits of recent times and fetched him numerous awards. Anupam, subsequently debuted as music director for the Bengali movie "Chalo Paltai" (2011). In the same year movies like Baishe Srabon, Rang Milanti released where he continued his work as a music director, lyricist & vocalist. The songs "Gobhire Jao", "Ekbar Bol", "Ei Shrabon", "Je Kota Din" from the film Baishe Srabon have become very popular. He recently released "Durbine Chokh Rakhbona", his first solo album which contains the hit "Tistaan" and also the original version of "Beche Thakar Gaan".

Bengali Festival And Bangla Desh In Trouble London May 12 2013
The video covers some of the activity at Victoria Park in London. And I was there at the beginning, there were 10s of 1,000s more people arriving. I don't drive a car, but i could see there were horrific traffic jams and no parking spaces.
The following is from Wikipedia:
The Boishakhi Mela (Bengali: বৈশাখী মেলা Boishakhi Mêla) celebrated in London, England, takes place across the area of Banglatown in the borough of Tower Hamlets in east London .... The event is a celebration of the Bengali New Year, with musical and cultural events held. It is the largest open-air Asian festival in Europe and the largest Bengali festival outside of Bangladesh. After the Notting Hill Carnival, it is the second-largest street festival in the UK attracting over 80,000 visitors from around the UK. Although the Bengali new year falls on 14/15 April (1st Boishakh in the Bengali calendar), the festival is held in the second weekend of May on a Sunday to avoid the period of higher risk of rain during the month of April. Having started in 1997, the 10th anniversary of the mela was celebrated in 2007.

Jhumur Songs are an integral part of Bengali Folklore. This album is a compilation of Jhumur and Bhadu Tusu Songs sung by the famous Jhumuriya Subhash Chakraborty. These Bengali Songs are rich in Folklore heritage. Jhumur is a traditional dance form and music, existing in eastern part of India, basically in Assam, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha. The dance is performed by young girls. They are also accompanied by fewer male members, who by and large maintain the rhythm with musical instruments and vocals.
The lyrics of Jhumur are simple and built on day-to-day languages and mostly depict love and or pleasures and pains of day-to-day life. The dance gets its name from the cluster of bells worn round the ankles, which make a clanging noise. There are many variations of Jhumur. This dance is some times performed as a ritual worship of gods and goddesses, sometimes for courting and lovemaking, and yet again as a prayer for rainfall. This dance incorporates songs and dialogues, which depict the joys and sorrows, yearning and aspirations of the everyday lives of the common people. It is believed that Jhumur was originally a means of recreation between phases of tedious agricultural work.
Probably the most entertaining form of Jhumur is the Bhaduria, performed as thanksgiving for a bountiful monsoon. Jhumur has developed largely over centuries. The early forms of Jhumur used primarily Folk instruments like Madol and Dhamsa and bells. But over the years newer adaptations and instrumentation. The groovy rhythm of Jhumur Songs makes it so popular with the masses. The other form of Songs compiled in this album are the Bhadu-Tusu Songs.
Bhadu is the social festival of South Bengal. The festival starts from the first day of Bhadro, the fifth month in Bengali Calendar and continues till the end of the month. It has its origins in the story of a princess called Bhadravati (Bhadresvari) of Panchakote who committed suicide. Bhadu gaan or Songs are an inseparable part of Bhadu festival that reflects the colours of rural society. It used to be very popular in Burdwan, Bankura and Midnapore. But in Birbhum the existence of this unique genre is being threatened by the rising popularity of cinema and television. Bhadu songs are composed extemporaneously and sung on each night of the festival, depicts the Goddesses as young girls. They describe Bhadu and tell in loving detail how they will be entertained. Since Bhadu is unmarried, her songs are sung mostly by unmarried girls. Dancing and playing drums accompanies Bhadu. Jhumuriya Subhash Chakraborty is a legendary figure who popularised these Folk Forms amidst the masses. This album has some smashing hit Folk tracks like Bankuraar Maatikey and Tusu, bhaasur Aale Jaabek Naai. This is one true blue folk album that is a must listen.

Today is a highly celebrated day in the Bengali calendar. It's the Bengali New Year, popularly called Nobo Borsho in Bengali. A festival, as we all will agree, is incomplete without a sweet dish. Gokul Pithe is a sweet dish that is generally made today. Do try making it in your kitchen and remember to share your version and experience with us. Happy sharing to you!
Ingredients:
For the pithe cover
• 1 cup maida
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 1 pinch salt
• 1 tsp aniseeds or saunf
• ¼ cup sugar
For the filling
• 1cup coconut
• 1 cup jaggery
• ½ cup mawa
For the sugar syrup
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 cup water
• ½ tsp cardamom powder
Oil to deep fry
Method:
• Mix all ingredients for the cover and mix very well. Add water to create a thick batter.
• Mix all the ingredients for the filling in a pan. Cook till it all comes together as a homogenous mass and all liquid is dried up.
• Bring all ingredients of the sugar syrup to a boil and simmer till it is thick.
• Make little balls from the prepared filling. Dip them well in the pre-made batter so that it coats the filling from all sides.
• Deep fry the batter coated filling roundels in hot oil.
• When the roundels are brown from all sides, take them out and dip them in prepared sugar syrup.
• Let it soak for 1 hour and then it’s ready to eat.

Bong Calendar 1422 | Promo | Photography by Dabboo Ratnani
Bengali new year 1418 song at Ramona of Dhaka.
Numerous people assemble early in the morning at Ramna Park in Dhaka where the Chhayanat artists give a beautiful start to the day with Rabindranath Tagore's songs. Ceremonies welcoming the Nabo Borsho also take place at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. Parades and colorful processions are organized by the students and the teachers, at the campus. Different types of cultural and social programs are organized throughout the day, which are also broadcasted on radio and television.
Bengali New Year
If you happen to be in Bangladesh & West Bengal during the middle of April, you would find people wishing "Shubo Nabo Barsho" to each other! Wondering what it means? "Shubo Nabo Barsho" means "A Very Happy New Year! Yes April is the month when the Bengali New Year is observed. It falls on 14th of April every year as per the Gregorian calendar. According to the Bengali calendar, the Bengali New Year or Poila Baisakh falls on the 1st day of the Baisakh month. The Nabo Barsha festival was introduced by Akbar, the great Mughal emperor.
Poila Baisakh or Bengali New Year is celebrated with immense excitement and enthusiasm not only by the people residing in Bangladesh but also West Bengal and of course the tribal people residing in the hilly regions. For them also, this is the time to bud adieu to the past year and welcome with all the happiness and joy, the New Year.
Irrespective of the barriers of caste, religion and regional differences, Poila Boishakh is the time for all the Bengalis in Bangladesh and indian state west Bengal and Assam to connect to each other, celebrate and spread the message of love and hope. In the states of West Bengal and Assam, this day is observed as a state holiday while in Bangladesh it is a national holiday.
Bengali New Year Celebrations and Rituals
Usually on the day of Poila Baishakh, the houses are cleaned and sometimes painted. People take early bath and put in their best dresses. Much of the day is spend by paying a visit to relatives, friends and neighbors. Special food items are prepared on this special occasion of the Bengali New Year.
On the Poila Boishakh day, people gather in the morning to have a look at the sunrise since this is considered to be sacred. Songs ushering the New Year are performed by the singers. Bengalis can be seen in their tradition attire. While the young ladies wear saris, the boys put on Kurta Pyajama or dhotis. There is also an age-old tradition of starting the day by having a breakfast consisting of panta bhat (soaked rice) along with onion, green chillies, and fried Hilsa fish.
