Epistemology: Hume's Skepticism and Induction Part 1
Epistemology: Hume's Skepticism and Induction Part 1
According to the philosopher David Hume (1711-1776), absolutely everything we know falls into one of two categories: either it is a relation of ideas (e.g., 2 + 2 =4) or it is a matter of fact (e.g., the sky is blue). Daniel Greco walks us through this famous Humean distinction in preparation for examining Hume's even more famous skeptical argument against induction.

Intro to Philosophy: David Hume, Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (the arguments)
In this lecture/discussion session from my 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class at Marist College, we finish up our study of David Hume's classic work in Philosophy of Religion, Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, by focusing on most of the arguments about God's existence and God's nature made between his three interlocutors -- Philo, Demea, and Cleanthes. After engaging in some review about terminology , we look first at Demea's a priori cosmological arguments. Then, we examine in more detail Cleanthes a posteriori arguments from analogy, i.e. design arguments, and examine what makes such arguments strong or weak. We then look at the

[Philosophy Audiobook] An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding by David Hume
The Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding is a shortened and simplified version of Hume's masterpiece A Treatise of Human Nature. It sought to reach a wider audience, and to dispel some of the virulent criticism addressed toward the former book. In it, Hume explains his theory of epistemology, and argues against other current theories, including those of John Locke, George Berkeley, and Nicolas Malebranche. (Summary by Kirsten Ferreri)

The Giants of Philosophy: David Hume - Audiobook
David Hume (1711-1776) represented the culmination of the British philosophy of sense-experience. Although he lived in the age of reason, Hume had profound doubts about our ability to know anything in the world with certainty. This skepticism colored his view of science and gave rise to his devastating attack on proofs of the existence of God. Hume believed that values are neither objective nor universal, but nevertheless was optimistic about human nature and our ability to achieve decency in our actions.
The Giants of Philosophy is a series of dramatic presentations, in understandable language, of the concerns, questions, interests, and ove
