I think this is a bit too low frequency to qualify as "dog whistle":
[Grover] Norquist dropped by The Times’ Washington bureau today and, as part of his negative critique of Obama’s liberal stances on economic issues and other matters, he termed the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee "John Kerry with a tan."
Earlier this year, the RNC did polling to determine how far they could go in their attacks before they would be perceived as "racist." Not, one would imagine, because they really cared — but rather, as John Judis noted in an interesting article in TNR, because "too far" could backlash.
He brings Princeton political scientist Tali Mendelberg’s analysis of the Willie Horton ad in her book, The Race Card:
Mendelberg’s most controversial claim is that these ads work best when the appeal is implicit. If the appeal is explicit, she argues–that is, if politicians actually say that blacks are undeserving–then they lose support because they have violated the norm against racism. Although voters will respond unconsciously to an implicit appeal that they don’t perceive as racist, they will recoil for reasons of conscience or social disapproval to an appeal that either is, or is seen as, racist. Mendelberg asserts that Bush actually lost support to Dukakis in the closing weeks of the 1988 campaign because, on October 21, Jesse Jackson denounced the Horton ad as racist and Dukakis’s running mate Lloyd Bentsen followed suit two days later. That made explicit what had previously been implicit.
Despite all their polling, it just doesn’t seem like the Republicans are going to be able to keep themselves from hurtling over that line into "explicit" territory.
Or maybe Grover just didn’t get the memo.
said the pasty faced sophmore
Hi Jane..Put fuggggggggggly wart Norquist next to STUNNING specimen BHO…i dare ya….case closed
BHO……is a political Denzel……….deadbang Handsome…..Norquist…eh not so much
uhhm buy the way….Grover appears to not posses a NECK in that pic
okay…donde esta les peeps?
Grover Norquist is a racist with a flag pin.
Consider the source…he’s just jealous of both Kerry and Obama, because he’s just flat out ugly on the inside. His racist viciousness arises out of his own personal insecurity.
The Republicans are getting bolder by the day, because they are desparate….the “N” word will probably eventually slip out from somebody.
norquist meet bathtub
or clavicles, for that matter, and he seems to be holding his breath, or something.
Groovnor should get outta the bathtub a’fore he shrivels up to nuttin.
Grover’s policies have drowned the country in a bathtub.
And Malkin is Coulter with………
they will go just as far as they can, and push the line further out, the repiglician party is indeed racist, they have been racist for many years. Remember Nixon and the “Southern Strategy”. The repigs will continue to go back to whatever worked in the past simply because they are conservative, and conservatives deside to go back to a past that they imagine was perfect. Like the 50’s for example, before all those uppity women, young people,AA, Latino’s, and all the others started demanding their rights. The wing nut right just can’t stand that everybody else wants to be treated like them. They want to return to the time when workers got a dollar a day, and were glad to get it. They hate unions because then they can’t exploit their workers, so they take their companies overseas, where they can exploit their workers. The oligarch’s really really want st john and the repigs to win, they want to remain in power(behind the curtin) Fascists + Authoritarians + Oligarchies + Racists = Republicians
Move over Grover and let Obama take over.
look what i found…if its too spensive …make your own….baby tshirts at the dollar store and Magig Markers

“John Kerry with a tan…”
cute.
I missed the part where Obama married an heiress, was voted most liberal, etc.
I think it’s pretty funny that Norquist says he doesn’t want a “nanny state” but is OK with “big daddy with guns” to “protect” us. What an intellectual lightweight.
I think that is right. and KKKarl blew the dog whistle last week and the media missed it.
Being racist was exactly what KKKarl was doing when he talked about OB being the snide guy “at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall.”
That was all about country club Goopers picturing a black guy with white woman.
What other kind of woman do we think these Goopers envision when someone says: think of a “beautiful date.”
the sad part is that the media missed it, AGAIN.
wayyy cute, except the dawg-years one. that’s too close to the truth.
Chickenhawks for Punditzzz….straight from the Stink Tanks
707!
Basil is teh Liberal, and all his friends too
GNQ and his Repug buddies have to make race an issue. Otherwise they are stuck with McCain’s virtues as the basis for electability. BTW, whatever happened to “which candidate would you rather sit down with and have a beer?” Even on that issue, McCain has a conflict of interest.
Grover doesn’t do polling. He simply knows that everyone worth listening to believes exactly what he does, and doesn’t give a damn about listening to anyone else.
NPR reporters did an anti-union (SAG) story this morning. NPR reporter clearly enjoyed explaining that SAG had lost major support from another union which had broken ranks and had cut a deal with producers.
Then the NPR reporters explained – without missing a beat – that they themselves were members of a union.
neither intellectual nor lightweight. he’s a common, garden-variety twit. or nincompoop, if you wish.
;->
Or maybe Grover just didn’t get the memo.
Or refused to open the e-mail….
so does that make McCan’t Bob Dole without the viagra ?
Jane, that’s really an AWFUL pic. Just what IS he doing? omg. multitasking?
trying to keep up appearances? eewww
brain bleach in aisle 29 STAT!
if I didn’t love and admire y’all so much, I’d post Attaturk’s masterful photoshop of Grover and Jonah in the hot tub – but I kinda like it here :D
so does that make McCan’t Bob Dole without the viagra ?
A rope-pusher?
He likely doesn’t even understand the concept of email
tap tap tap
and wonder what Grover’s kewlest veep pick evah: Condi thinks of that remark
- god whatta pig
Between this remark from Norquist and that Repug strategists remark yesterday about the cleavage of the journalist in response to questions about Charlie Black’s judgement for making his gaff about a terrorist attack being good for McSame’s campaign, it seems the Rethugs just cannot help but put their bigotry on exhibit! Exhibitionists!
I say greet every dog whistel with Bush.
I mean Bush, really, is about as pejorative as you can get.
Looks like Grover is auditioning for a job on the Washington Post OpEd page.
somehow pigs get a lotta grief at this place.
they’re smarter than most repugs.
time to pick on something else.
I think the funniest thing about this remark is that considering the the power of incumbency and the razor-thin margin in ‘04 (leaving aside all the dirty tricks), if Kerry hadn’t been running against an incumbent president, he almost certainly would have won. So Grover has sneered himself right into yet another losing scenario!
Bush
I did enjoy Colbert’s interview of this twit saying that he feels so guilty driving on roads paid for by others that he just goes around in circles in his backyard. “drives the neighbors crazy”. Grover just gave him a look.
So what is a good use of tax money? Oh you know, police force, military…just couldn’t even come up with firefighters, hospitals, schools…just people who kick ass. he’d pay them.
UUuuiiii’m not about to explain it to ‘im. Not here. Not now. not evah.
Anyone catching the Hillary/Obama rally ? It’s on CNN.com
are you telling us “abd, abd, abdthat’s all folks!”?
Hear Hear … enough with the Back Bacon jokes ! *g*
I’m still helplessly sputtering over the hilarious thot of Colbert smacking Nutquest across the chops so superbly.
707!
also C-SPAN
babybackribs are on sale this week. *sniffle*
Florida has an ammendment on the ballot to remove from the property tax bill the portion alotted to public schools. This portion has typically been a large one. If it passes, and it probably will, it will be the final nail in the coffin of the Florida public school system.
why don’t we have a contest?
Prize to whom?ever can come up with the most original and useful quest for Sir. Nordless.
I didn’t know that. My condolences, truly.
oh dear god ! Floridians should be talking to Californians about Prop 13 in all it’s ongoing horror -
who is sponsoring this ? qui bono ?
May I say, I like seeing the pix of Ms Clinton and Mr Obama smiling at the same time in the same room. This is a good thing.
I’d rather she not be Veep, but still, they need to work together, if only to show up Nor-issed.
this one is kewl
although it’ll flummox the shit out of the villagers and their Dems in Disarray template
Please just whisper. Ohio would be next. Funding system found unconstitutional twice, and then the OHSupremes simply decided and announced that they wouldn’t think about that any more.
Once again, how do black pundits such as Joe Watkins and Amy Curlyhair find it within themselves to carry the water for Republicans all over cable TV when their party condones such talk.
They must breeze right past that mirror in the morning, lest they accidentally look at what they’ve become.
What kind of political party takes a poll to see how racist they can get away with being?
Over 500 members of the House & Senate.
Not one black Republican member.
Tells you all you need to know.
It is kewl indeed! Don’t miss the ‘aw shucks’ smiles of the 2 sweet guys in the back.
it’s even worse than that, Watkins purports to be a minister
looks like there’s a new post upstairs
Here in NH we are funding not only the schools in our district but are sending monies to other districts that refuse to tax their properties to fund the public schools. For instance in our town we help subsidize Exeter which has vast amounts of properties that they do not tax all their damn churches. temples and other fairyland edifices and the phillips academy a private, very well endowed school. It is a nuts system and only because the bloody feds are feeding an oillegal war.
Here’s something quite interesting. Both Frist and Santorum left the Senate in 2006…but they still have political campaign fundraising units culling prodigious amounts of money from donors (deferred kickbacks for legislation, perhaps?). What is amazing is that since their last election both of these individuals have contributed less than $20,000 total to fellow Republicans from those funds – that’s less than 3% of what they take in!
It seems the main reason for these funds is to provide employment for the army of sycophantic staff that they accumulated through patronage for over a decade.
Here’s the link on that – Former Republican Senators have Warchests…but don’t help
Isn’t that all part and parcel of “I’ve got mine, screw you, and the devil take the hindmost?”
Or against a gamed ballot box, as I recall.
We had the same thing happen in Connecticut. Our Supreme Court decided school financing based on property taxation was unconstitutional because wealthy communities spend more on education than poor communities. The judges found rich people have more money than poor people. Only judges require proof of that proposition. The decision marked the limit of judicial power, a result so out of touch with reality no one pays attention.
As for racism and Obama, racism may play some role in the FISA controversy. I support Obama without reservation. He’s an extremely smart politician who walks the line of not being too “white” for his black supporters and too “black” for his white supporters. He does not waste himself on lost causes-some say that’s a failure of leadership. He is versatile enough to have someone like me think he’s a closet populist, while others think him a corporate hack. Reminds me of the joke about two women arguing over which one owns a chicken. They take their dispute to the rabbi who listens to the first woman and says “You’re right, you own the chicken. The second woman says “Just a minute” and she tells her story. The rabbi says “You’re right, you own the chicken.” A passerby who heard the whole thing asks, “Rabbi how can they both be right?” The rabbi says to him, “You’re right, too”. So far as I know, he’s still the rabbi.
………a vagina?
Hey,Jane — way epu-ed on this but I’m glad to see your post! I just did one at my homeblog this evening, because I saw KO’s report about this in his Top Story #3. I think there’s more to the story:
This morning, I happened to tune in a local radio station in northern Minnesota and the station owner was reading selected excerpts from Michelle Obama’s college paper along with rightwing editorializing. I have no idea who he got this stuff from, but since he’s not exactly known for his intellectual curiosity, just his rightwing politics, I’m wondering if maybe there’s an orchestrated launch of the race card overtly–like through Norquist-as well as under-the-radar in these small market radio stations.
The stench of SC campaign tactics going national?
I’ve tried to put this into historical perspective. Read more….http://www.tagg-lines.com
