Mesopotamia. Land of two rivers, the Euphrates and the Tigris. Descendants of the ancient cultures are Siriacs, Arameic-speaking Christians.
Nowadays the Syriacs inhabit the "Upper Mesopotamia," which includes Northern Iraq, Turkey, and Syria -- as well as Lebanon and Iran.
At the end of the First World War, after the downfall of the Ottoman empire, their life experienced major change. The newly defined borders divided their population into different states. Everywhere they represent a national and religious minority. Over the past 100 years they have been persecuted and their rights violated. Therefore, great numbers of them continue to emigrate to Europe and North America.
Syriacs speak Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus himself. That is why they became acquainted with his teachings very early and adopted Christianity. Since they lived in the East, outside the borders of the Roman Empire, they were called the Eastern Christians.

Assyrian Music has started to make a turn for the better.
How many times have you wanted to listen to Assyrian music but have told yourself, I really don't want to hear the same old Assyrian rhythm with the irritating horn and that overpowering drum, with the lyrics of someone walking up a mountain killing a bear with his rifle.
Does that Assyrian music have it's time and place?
Yes I believe it does.
Do I still listen to that kind of Assyrian Music?
Yes I do
Do you remember the times when you used to go to an Assyrian weddings and the band used to consist of a real drummer, bass player, guitar player, real percussion player, 2 keyboard players and possibly even a saxophone?
Now I realise that the bands are getting smaller and louder.
To all the 2 - 3 piece Assyrian bands out there: Turn it down PLEASE, my ears are still ringing! :)
No it doesn't sound better when it's louder and no, people don't shake their shoulder more. By the way that was a joke.
In this podcast we interview creative Assyrian Musician from the band Azadoota Robin Zarwanda.
Would you like to see an Assyrian band that has 3 piece horn section, bongoes, timbales, bass guitar, solid drums, guitar with awesome patriotic Assyrian lyrics, playing funky, afro cuban, brazilian with a twist of salsa?
Then look no further because Azadoota will get you excited and once again enjoy listening to Assyrian music. Youtube has been a great place for Robin to get his name and band out there and he has been quite savvy when it comes to getting his music out there over the internet.

How does Azadoota create awareness through their Assyrian music?
Robin has been doing his activism in another way and the thing is, he just does it without even realising. He has such a passion and love for Assyrians that he will go to extremes to educate people not only Assyrians but other nationalities on Assyrians, Assyrian music and other Assyrian cultures.
In one instance he was on a television segment showing the public how to cook Shirwa ooRizza. Although I couldn't find the footage but here's the blog written by Adelaide Independent News, http://indaily.com.au/food-and-wine/2014/02/25/taste-world-shirwa-oorizza-lamb-stew/

My interview with George Maragolof over the current genocide taking place in Iraq. There are a host of problems facing Assyrian Christians today. In my interview, I discuss how the government of Iraq is currently rejecting funds aimed at helping Assyrians. I also stress the importance of “unity” and how everyone, regardless of country or denomination, need to take a stand against these atrocities.
“I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” 1 Corinthians 1:10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6ZgNf0T7Gg
I had a great discussion with Pastor Cliff Lawton about the genocide that is being perpetuated against the Assyrian Christians in both Iraq and Syria. We both voiced our frustrations over this administration's lack of action. We need our own province. We have the beginnings of a military force that will protect the region - the Nineveh Plain Protection Units (NPU). But, we desperately need funding. Please continue to pray for all of those who are being persecuted within the Near East. And, please contact your representatives about “arming the Assyrian Christians.” It is vital that you call us by name in your communications with public officials. I also ask for you to please continue both volunteering and donating to the following charities:

Directed By: John-Roger, Dss & Jsu Garcia, Dss
Aramaic (Classical Syriac: ܐܪܡܝܐ Aramaya) is a family of languages or dialects, belonging to the Semitic family. More specifically, it is a part of the Northwest Semitic subfamily, which also includes Canaanite languages such as Hebrew and Phoenician. The Aramaic script was widely adopted for other languages and is ancestral to both the Arabic and modern Hebrew alphabets.
During its over 3,000 years of written history,[2] Aramaic has served variously as a language of administration of empires and as a language of divine worship. It was the lingua franca of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, Neo-Babylonian Empire and Achaemenid Empire, the day-to-day language of Yehud Medinata and of Judaea (539 BC – 70 AD), the language that Jesus probably used the most,[3][4][5] the language of large sections of the biblical books of Daniel and Ezra, and is the main language of the Talmud and Syriac Christianity, in particular the Assyrian Church of the East, the Chaldean Catholic Church, the Ancient Church of the East, the Saint Thomas Christian Churches in India, the Syriac Orthodox Church and the Maronite Church.[6] However, Jewish Aramaic was different from the other forms both in lettering and grammar. Parts of the Dead Sea Scrolls are in Jewish Aramaic showing the Jewish lettering, related to the Hebrew script. Aramaic was also the original language of the Bahrani people of Eastern Arabia.[7]
Aramaic's long history and diverse and widespread use has led to the development of many divergent varieties, which are sometimes considered dialects, though they are distinct enough that they are sometimes considered languages. Therefore, there is not one singular, static Aramaic language; each time and place rather has had its own variation. Aramaic is retained as a liturgical language by certain Eastern Christian churches, in the form of Syriac, the Aramaic variety by which Eastern Christianity was diffused, whether or not those communities once spoke it or another form of Aramaic as their vernacular, but have since shifted to another language as their primary community language.
Modern Aramaic is spoken today as a first language by many scattered, predominantly small, and largely isolated communities of differing Christian, Jewish, and Mandean ethnic groups of West Asia[8]—most numerously by the Assyrians in the form of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic and Chaldean Neo-Aramaic—that have all retained use of the once dominant lingua franca despite subsequent language shifts experienced throughout the Middle East. The Aramaic languages are now considered endangered.[9]

During H.H Patriarch Aphrem II first day (23 May 2015) in the kingdom of Sweden thousands of faithful filled the streets heading to St Afrem Cathedral in Sodertalje to greet H.H the Patriarch.
In an interview later in the day with the “Assyrian” channel (Assyria TV) there was asked H.H Patriarch Aphrem II for his opinion about the recognition from Armenia of the genocide against our people in 1915. Interviewer Augin Kurt Haninke claims that the name “Asori” means “Assyrian”. But H.H. answered that the patriarch and politicial leaders of Armenia have told him that they have only recognize the Greek and Syriac Genocide and not the “Assyrian” Genocide!
In recognizing the Genocide of the Arameans (Syriacs), the Armenian Parliament refers to “Asori.” In Armenian, “Asori” and “Asoreren” are well-acknowledged terms to mean “Syrian” people and “Syriac” language, which are originally Greek terms for the Semitic (Hebrew and Aramaic) names of the “Aramean” people and “Aramaic” language. Historians, linguists and scholars of Armenian Studies widely confirm the historical and linguistic fact that “Asori” should be translated as “Syrian; Aramean.” They have also clearly clarified the confusing and inaccurate translation of the resembling English term “Assyrian,” which itself is actually “Asorestants’i” in Armenian.

Mountain of Servants is the story of five Syriac Christians who struggle to protect what's left of their dwindling community in Southeastern Turkey. In a period of turmoil across the Middle East, I hope this little-known story of the Syriacs makes a difference in how people see the region and its diverse communities.

I directed Mountain of Servants while on exchange in Turkey in 2014. It's my first serious documentary film and was a very difficult undertaking. Please feel free to reach out to any of the crew members to offer feedback, comments, or general thoughts. We'd love to hear from you!

ACSSU introduces a fun and educational online project called Syriac Challenge for all Assyrians (also known as Chaldeans and Syriacs) to participate in! The point of this challenge is to get Assyrians from around the world and from different tribes and churches to participate so that we are all able to learn and appreciate the plurality of our language. After this we will be able to see the various dialects, and how one word can be said in many different ways.
We ask everyone to record themselves saying the following words and post them on Facebook with the hashtag #SyriacChallenge. Tag your friends to create a chain reaction and keep the challenge going!
Rules:
- Introduce yourself and where you are from
- Where in our homeland are you from
- Which tribe/families your parents from
- Repeat the words below
- Say the words as you've known them, even if you know they are foreign words from Arabic, Turkish, Kurdish or Persian
- Challenge your friends by tagging them!
- Write #SyriacChallenge in the description

Turkey's Syriac community will build a new church in the Yeşilkoy neighborhood of Bakırkoy district in Istanbul, an area close to Atatürk Airport, prime ministry officials said Jan. 2.
The decision came during a meeting of Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu with representatives of non-Muslim minority communities at the prime ministry's office in Istanbul, known as the Dolmabahçe Palace.
The state will allocate an area for the construction of the church, the officials added.
The religious representatives and the prime minister discussed these communities' issues during the meeting, where Davutoğlu emphasized unity during his speech.
He said that when talking about religious communities, they were evaluated as if they were affiliated to another country. "All [representatives] are equal and real citizens of the Republic of Turkey," he said.
Davutoğlu also invited the religious leaders for a New Year's meal at the Prime Ministry's office.
Fener Greek Patriarch Bartholomew; Deputy Armenian Patriarch Archbishop Aram Ateşyan; Chief Rabbi İshak Haleva; Istanbul Syriac Orthodox Church Metropolitan Yusuf Çetin; Turkish Ambassador to the Vatican Mehmet Paçacı; Monsignor Yusuf Sağ, patriarchal vicar of Turkey for Syrians; and Levon Zekiyan of the Apostolic Administrator of the Armenian Archieparchy of Istanbul, all participated in the lunch at the prime ministerial office in Dolmabahçe Palace.
