A semi-arid climate or steppe climate are climatic regions that receive precipitation below potential evapotranspiration, but not extremely. A more precise definition is given by the Köppen climate classification that treats steppe climates (BSk and BSh) as intermediates between desert climates (BW) and humid climates in ecological characteristics and agricultural potential. Semi-arid climates tend to support short or scrubby vegetation, with semi-arid areas usually dominated by either grasses or shrubs.
To determine if a location has a semi-arid climate, the precipitation threshold must first be determined. Finding the precipitation threshold (in millimeters) involves first multiplying the average annual temperature in °C by 20, then adding 280 if 70% or more of the total precipitation is in the high-sun half of the year (April through September in the Northern Hemisphere, or October through March in the Southern), or 140 if 30%–70% of the total precipitation is received during the applicable period, or 0 if less than 30% of the total precipitation is so received. If the area's annual precipitation is less than the threshold but more than half the threshold, it is classified as a BS (steppe climate).

Food security in most parts of the country has become an issue due to climate change that has since disrupted rain patters making it difficult for farmers to make informed decisions on when to sow their crops, hence the perennial food shortage in most parts of the country. Brazil: Living with the land IFAD (EN)
The North-East of Brazil is the most densely populated semi-arid region in the world. Low, erratic rainfall and cyclic droughts make farming difficult. For generations, farmers have resorted to excessive use of chemicals and slash and burn agriculture, stripping the soil of nutrients. Now farmers like Irupuan Gomes are trying something new. He is using bush management techniques to rehabilitate t

Turkana County is located in arid and semi-arid lands that have been hard hit by recurrent drought, human conflict, and a legacy of social and economic marginalization. It is the largest county in Kenya, and the poorest – with a poverty rate of 94%.
Napeo Pauline is one of 17 members of the Turkana Widows Advancement Program, a self-help group of widows and widowers, affected by HIV/AIDS. The widows sell homemade goods such as soap, baskets and jewelry. They have formed a village savings and loan group where they save their money and distribute loans.
In addition, to promoting the importance of multiple streams of income and savings, USAID and the Government of Kenya has trained the group how to farm nutritious crops such as butternut squash and kale. This, in addition to supplements and other nutrition services that the families receive through USAID-supported World Food Programme and UNICEF programs has greatly improved their children’s nutrition.
The group has helped the women move from relying on handouts from the community, to relying on themselves for support.
USAID resilience activities begin with humanitarian assistance and helping those in dire need access food and nutrition services. While food aid can save lives by taking care of emergency needs that arise in the wake of drought, floods or other catastrophic event, it is not a permanent solution.
USAID is also helping Kenyans lay the foundation for thriving, self-sustaining communities; by putting the tools, knowledge and skills you need, in the hands of affected communities. The World Food Programme’s Food for Assets program, funded by USAID, provides food in exchange for the communities’ efforts to build productive assets in their communities, such as farms, water pans or irrigation systems. These assets, identified by the community, help pave the way for a more prosperous future, not just for today, but for many generations to come.

Harry Nankin's 'Ekkyklema' is a mosaic of 112 gelatin silver films mounted on tiles of fine glass. The artwork comprises cameraless 'shadow' images of live invertebrates made on location at semi-arid Lake Tyrrell and sub-alpine Mount Buffalo in Victoria, Australia juxtaposed with the chemical trace of a dancers footfall performed on the dry bed of that dry lake. The artwork is seen here displayed on three custom-made light boxes in October 2014 at an exhibition at the RMIT University School of Art gallery, Melbourne. A staggering 1.9 million of all Kenyan children under the age of 5 are said to suffer stunted growth and may not achieve their full developmental potential.
This is mostly blamed on malnutrition as many families in mostly arid and semi arid regions in the country struggle to put food on the table.
To curb this menace the european union in partnership with other stakeholders has donated billions of shillings to the worst affected regions.

At IIHS, Ritwika is part of the ongoing “Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA)”, a climate change and adaptation project, focused on select semi – arid transects of the Indian peninsular region. She’s looking at differential vulnerability across scales; city to sub-regional to National. She is also exploring the co-benefits approach to Climate change, looking at mitigation-adaptation nexus and working on governance aspects of climate change.
Prior to Joining IIHS, she worked with PAC (IDRC think tank), where she worked on projects exploring the governance dimensions of climate change and other key urban environmental. Her master’s thesis project at IFP Pondicherry, assessed the economic and conservation potential of native trees in human dominated landscapes (CAFs) of Western Ghats, supported by Ruffords Small Grants Foundation.
Her previous associations with WWF, BNHS and IFP have inculcated in her, a deep curiosity to study people’s lives in complex socio-ecological systems challenged by dynamic global changes.

Manish is a consultant at IIHS. He is presently working on the CARIAA (Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia) project, and is researching on the impact of climate change on the water resources in the semi-arid regions.
He has obtained a Master of Engineering degree in the Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, a specialization of Civil Engineering. His dissertation project was the groundwater modelling in the Bangalore city, where he studied the effect of urbanisation on the groundwater system.
Manish’s research interests are urban groundwater modelling, groundwater-surface water interaction, application of GIS and remote sensing in the surface water and groundwater modelling.

With highlights such as the Valdez Peninsular, Moreno Glacier, Tierra Del Fuego, Torres Del Paine, El Chaten and the stunning Fjords of Chile, Patagonia is the perfect place to get up close and personal with nature.
Landscapes change from semi arid plateaus to snow capped mountains ranges, stunning lakes, forests and volcanoes.
An outdoor enthusiast’s Mecca, many people flock here to give their hiking boots a good work out. There is also horse riding, mountain biking, white-water rafting and skiing.
However, you don’t have to have an adrenalin addiction to enjoy this stunning part of the world. Patagonia can also be enjoyed at a slower pace while staying in world class accommodation. Staring at the views, cruising the fjords, or visiting one of the many wineries are just some of the equally exciting but less exertive activities to be enjoyed here. "What Causes Desertification?
Desertification is caused by a combination of factors that promote the persistent degradation of ecosystems in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions. Climatic variability and climate change are certainly major factors, but desertification is above all caused by human activities. There is a West African proverb that says “Forests precede civilizations and deserts follow them”. I believe that this essentially characterises the situation that is occurring in some parts of the world, such as the Sahel..."
