A semi-arid climate or steppe climate describes climatic regions that receive precipitation below potential evapotranspiration, but not extremely. A more precise definition is given by the Köppen climate classification that treats steppe climates (BSk and BSh) as intermediates between desert climates (BW) and humid climates in ecological characteristics and agricultural potential. Semi-arid climates tend to support short or scrubby vegetation, with semi-arid areas usually being dominated by either grasses or shrubs.
To determine if a location has a semi-arid climate, the precipitation threshold must first be determined. Finding the precipitation threshold (in millimeters) involves first multiplying the average annual temperature in °C by 20, then adding 280 if 70% or more of the total precipitation is in the high-sun half of the year (April through September in the Northern Hemisphere, or October through March in the Southern), or 140 if 30%–70% of the total precipitation is received during the applicable period, or 0 if less than 30% of the total precipitation is so received. If the area's annual precipitation is less than the threshold but more than half the threshold, it is classified as a BS (steppe climate).

The Turkana are a Nilotic people native to the Turkana District in northwest Kenya, a semi-arid climate region bordering Lake Turkana in the east, Pokot, Rendille and Samburu to the south, Uganda to the west, and Sudan and Ethiopia to the north. They refer to their land as Turkan.
According to the 2009 Kenyan census, Turkana number 855,399, or 2.5% of the Kenyan population, making Turkana the third largest Nilotic ethnic group in Kenya, after the Kalenjin and the Luo, slightly more numerous than the Maasai, and the tenth largest ethnicity in all of Kenya. Although this figure was initially controversial and rejected as too large by Planning Minister Wycliffe Oparanya, a court ruling (Feb 7, 2012) by Justice Mohammed Warsame stated that the Kenyan government accepts the 2009 census figures for Turkana.
The language of the Turkana, an Eastern Nilotic language, is also called Turkana; their own name for it is ŋaTurkana or aŋajep a ŋaTurkana.
The Turkana people call themselves ŋiTurkana (The Turkana). The name means the people of Turkan. They are mainly semi-nomadic pastoralists.

He was speaking when he opened two livestock markets in Isiolo and Marsabit counties, Mr Godec said the funds will enable beneficiaries engage in livestock-related economic activities as well as improving livestock trade.

The widows sell homemade goods such as soap, baskets and jewelry. They have formed a village savings and loan group where they save their money and distribute loans.
In addition, to promoting the importance of multiple streams of income and savings, USAID and the Government of Kenya has trained the group how to farm nutritious crops such as butternut squash and kale. This, in addition to supplements and other nutrition services that the families receive through USAID-supported World Food Programme and UNICEF programs has greatly improved their children’s nutrition.
The group has helped the women move from relying on handouts from the community, to relying on themselves for support.
USAID resilience activities begin with humanitarian assistance and helping those in dire need access food and nutrition services. While food aid can save lives by taking care of emergency needs that arise in the wake of drought, floods or other catastrophic event, it is not a permanent solution.
USAID is also helping Kenyans lay the foundation for thriving, self-sustaining communities; by putting the tools, knowledge and skills you need, in the hands of affected communities. The World Food Programme’s Food for Assets program, funded by USAID, provides food in exchange for the communities’ efforts to build productive assets in their communities, such as farms, water pans or irrigation systems. These assets, identified by the community, help pave the way for a more prosperous future, not just for today, but for many generations to come.

This is mostly blamed on malnutrition as many families in mostly arid and semi arid regions in the country struggle to put food on the table.
To curb this menace the european union in partnership with other stakeholders has donated billions of shillings to the worst affected regions.

Prior to Joining IIHS, she worked with PAC (IDRC think tank), where she worked on projects exploring the governance dimensions of climate change and other key urban environmental. Her master’s thesis project at IFP Pondicherry, assessed the economic and conservation potential of native trees in human dominated landscapes (CAFs) of Western Ghats, supported by Ruffords Small Grants Foundation.
Her previous associations with WWF, BNHS and IFP have inculcated in her, a deep curiosity to study people’s lives in complex socio-ecological systems challenged by dynamic global changes.

"What Causes Desertification?
Desertification is caused by a combination of factors that promote the persistent degradation of ecosystems in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions. Climatic variability and climate change are certainly major factors, but desertification is above all caused by human activities. There is a West African proverb that says “Forests precede civilizations and deserts follow them”. I believe that this essentially characterises the situation that is occurring in some parts of the world, such as the Sahel..."

The Islamic State group is claiming responsibility for bringing down the Russian Metrojet plane in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula — but it has have offered no evidence and is not known to have the capability to do so.
